Bangladesh one-day international skipper Mashrafee bin Murtaza on Thursday said that the chances of the Tigers in the forthcoming Asia Cup in UAE would hinge on their performance against Sri Lanka in the opening match.

The Tigers were drawn in Group B along with two familiar opponents, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, and would begin their campaign against the Islanders on September 15 in Dubai.

‘The main thing, our first match is very crucial. If we can play well in the first match I think the pressure will get reduced for us,’ Mashrafee told reporters in a press-conference in Mirpur.

‘This year’s format is quite different. With the addition of two new teams, we will have to qualify from the knock-out [group] stage.’

Bangladesh, which never won the Asia Cup, hosted last three editions of the tournament and reached the final in two of those occasions.

They lost to India in the final of previous edition, which was played in Twenty20 format in 2016.

The biennial tournament returned to Bangladesh’s favourite 50-over format this year, brightening the chance of Mashrafee-led side lifting their maiden title.

Mashrafee said Bangladesh also should be careful about Afghanistan, who defeated them in a Twenty20 series in June and got the potential to cause an upset or two in the Asia Cup.

‘Every team is threat for us. Especially those who are in our group….Afghanistan have a strong bowling unit and Sri Lanka got all-round ability in the team, so anything can happen.’

Speaking on the team’s prospect of lifting the title, Mashrafee was not in favour of thinking too far and reckoned India as top favourites.

‘If you look at the teams India are far better team compared to others. Pakistan will play like home team. But I believe we have the ability to beat them,’ he said.

‘The point is that how we start and if we can qualify for the next round. Here there are different calculations. If everything goes alright we are not lagging that behind,’ he said.

Coach Steve Rhodes was equally careful about raising the expectation on his charges.

‘If I was looking at a crystal ball, I could have told you that we have won the Asia Cup. But I don’t have it,’ he said.

‘There are other mighty teams in Asia – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. We believe we can. If we try our best, give the 100 per cent, and play some good cricket and believe we can win.’

Rhodes said Bangladesh should take confidence from their recent 2-1 series victory in West Indies- the side’s first ever series win in abroad for nine years.

‘We are going there full of confidence. We are ranked higher than the West Indies but those were still tough games,’ he said.

‘We have two games to qualify, which is the most important thing,’ added the coach.

‘We shouldn’t assume that we will get into the next group. We play well against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, and then it will add to the confidence. Then if we are in the last stages of the tournament, why wouldn’t you believe that you could win?’

Bangladesh will leave home for the tournament on September 9.

If Bangladesh knows how to use the conditions to their favour, they could win it.

Its a simple task. Use spinners here. UAE is a spinners paradise, especially if you have got good quality ones.

Pakistan has already reduced their chances of winning this league by only selecting one full time spinner.

Pakistan doesn’t have a quality full time spinner at the moment. They are playing to their strengths, which is a varied pace attack complimented by Shadab.

Besides Rashid, I won’t say any other spinner will be an out-right success in this tournament. Kuldeep needs turn AND bounce to be successful, otherwise his speeds are far too inconsistent and tries too many variations. Chahal is your run-of-the-mill leg-spinner. These two have made a name for themselves by bashing South Africa and England abroad, where they got plenty of bounce and the quality of the opposition wasn’t great tbh. Dananjaya has the same issue, where-in he needs a bit of bounce to be dangerous and tries too many things if he’s not getting his way. Rashid, on the other hand, bowls at the perfect pace for him to be successful in the UAE.

What about Shakib, though?

Also, I don't know how you came to this conclusion about Kuldeep. Maybe you're didn't watch the said matches and are only going by scoreboards, match reports, etc. Because he literally has 2 variations - leg spin and googly.

In fact, Chahal is the one with more variations because he also bowls the flipper.

Variations is not just about having a googly or leg spin. It’s about varying your angles and flight speed, basically trying something different besides your stock ball. I have only watched a bit of Kuldeep in the recent England series, and once England figured him out by the 2nd ODI, he was trying a bit too much out there. He needs turn AND bounce to be successful, while in the UAE you will get consistent low bounce. So remains to be seen how Kuldeep does on UAE wickets.

Rashid will be blockbuster though. The pace at which he bowls is perfect to have batsmen tangled up.

I have more belief in Afghanistan beating Bangladesh and reaching last 4 than Bangladesh winning the tournament,

I dont know in what context he had said that but in general the issue with Bangladesh (both players and fans) is that they talk more and perform less. Cricket matches is not won by writing essays on a forum or by media pep talks. You need to win a cricket match on ground. Any tournament involving BD is about big talks before a series and then zero result.

BD as a cricket team has won absolutely nothing. Not even a single tri series. If I was a BD captain, I would first win a trophy and then doing pep talks in media.

As far as beating Ind and Pak is concerned, any team can beat anyone on its day. But since that 2-1 series win at home in 2015, BD has never beaten India in any format in any matches. Lost twice in Asia cup 2016, lost the T20 WC, their A team lost against Karnataka, lost the test match in India, lost twice in CT, lost the U19 wc match and finally lost 3 times in Nidahas trophy.

So I am not sure...lol.

It will be one of India, Pakistan and SL. India are the clear favourites. Pakistan missed a trick by not playing an extra spinner- Gohar instead of Nawaz would have been ideal. Huge mistake not going with 2 specialist spinners in each game. Sadly, Hafeez would be better then Nawaz and provides balance but we need to move on from him. I have a feeling that SL will be a real threat with Daninjaya and may even be second favourites after India.

BD have no chance. India or Sri Lanka to win the tournament and Pakistan as third option because of weak spin options.

Pakistan has got the spinners. Problem is they are not concentrating on developing them.

Hire mushtaq or saqi and give them zafar gohar, yasir, asghar, raza, and any other spinner that are their in domestic.

Pakistan has the spin talent that other countries would die for

Well they need to get out of their group first, and that's definitely not a certainty. It's hard to choose between Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Have a feeling it could be a Team A beats Team B who beat Team C who beat Team A scenario.

These guys are useless. The state of Bangladesh cricket will not change, ever.

Rubbish.
So, BD captain should have said "we believe that we don't have capability to beat them(India and Pakistan)" Then then you would have said that BD captain has minnow mentality. So please say sir what BD captain should say!!!!!
