The chief executive of the Jozi Stars franchise in South Africa rode to the defence of underfire Chris Gayle on Tuesday, describing the West Indian batsman as "sensitive". The 40-year-old Gayle waved goodbye to South Africa's Mzansi Super League on Monday with a stormy press conference in which he complained "I don't get respect". It marked the end of a pitiful campaign for the former West Indies captain whose Johannesburg-based team, the defending champions in the Twenty20 championship, have yet to win a game in the current campaign.

Gayle scored just 101 runs in six innings which included a blistering 54 off 27 deliveries in Monday's defeat by Tshwane Spartans.

Jono Leaf-Wright, chief executive of Central Gauteng Cricket and the franchise, defended Gayle in an interview with The Star newspaper.

"In Chris's head, he feels that when he doesn't perform, because there are such expectations, from the franchise, the fans, that he's the reason the team is not performing.

"I know Chris well, he seems like he's the big character, lots of bravado, the swag and all that stuff but he's actually a sensitive guy, and unfortunately, when he doesn't perform he really takes it to heart. He's certainly no burden on our side."

In his farewell press conference, Gayle had also taken a swipe at the way the Stars had performed, hinting at off-field problems.

"This is not a champion team," he complained. "That is not how defending champions should play."

Responding to Gayle's assertion that the spirit in the dressing room was not the same as it had been in their winning season, Leaf-Wright said it might have been a man-management issue.

"As manager last year I looked after Chris personally," said Leaf-Wright.

"Maybe he just hasn't had the same attention and TLC that maybe I gave him last year because of my relationship with him."

Gayle's poor form and lack of mobility in the field were highlighted by critics as the West Indian failed to live up to his billing as one of the competition's "marquee" players who are paid a reported 1.2-million rand (about $82,000) for a full season.

Gayle, who played most recently for the West Indies in an ODI series against India in August, has shown no signs of retiring from cricket but will not play again this year.

"It's important to take a break from the game as well," he said.

"The mental part is not an issue for me, it's more the physical side of things.

"Once I get the physical side of things right, I can still carry on for however long I want to play this game."

Chris Gayle made himself unavailable for the series against India, he said he's taking a break from cricket to come back stronger. He won't be part of BBL and BPL also this time! Man is all set to make comeback in IPL, which will be his final one.

Close to the end of the road for Gayle.

He's made his money and should walk away soon.

This guy is the biggest wannabe in world cricket this century.

All these franchises bring him in knowing fully well he's past it. Then complain about it.

What a shame. A legend of the game deserves respect, doesn’t matter if he’s on his last legs.

Not his fault if franchises are begging after him. He is there to make money, not join the charity.

All these T20 mercenaries inevitably realize this once they reach the end of the road. Pietersen also understood fairly quickly that the end of his test career with England was going to leave a huge asterisk on his legacy. AB de Villiers will start moaning about this issue as well in a couple of years.

Chris Gayle opts out of India ODIs, takes break from cricket

West Indies opener Chris Gayle has opted to take a break from cricket for the rest of 2019, and will use the time to "reflect" on his future in international cricket.

Gayle, who most recently pulled out of the 2019 Mzansi Super League, where he plays for Jozi Stars, midway through the season, has been out of international cricket since the home series against India in August. Now, he has announced that he will take no part in the upcoming tour of the country, which includes three T20Is and as many ODIs, next month.

"West Indies called me to play ODIs, but I am not going to play," Gayle said on Sunday, 24 November. "They (selectors) want me to play with the youngsters, but for this year I am going to take a break.

"I'm going to recharge my batteries and think ahead in life, and try and plan it better and keep the people who are more real around you. There's a lot of things I am going to analyse. You never stop learning. Doesn't matter how long I have been playing. There's a lot of things for me to give back. 2020 is just around the corner. I will use now and next month to reflect on what I really want for 2020."

Gayle had a great start to the year, aggregating 424 runs from four innings in the home ODIs against England, but couldn't carry on that form thereafter. He finished with 242 runs from eight innings at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, before managing scores of 4 and 11 in the first two ODIs against India, the second of which saw him surpass Brain Lara's tally of 10,405 runs to become the leading run-scorer for West Indies in the format. He followed up that milestone with a stroke-filled 72 off just 41 balls in the third ODI.

The 40-year-old had walked into the game with a special '301' carved into his jersey, to mark the number of ODIs he's played in – the most for any West Indies cricketer. He walked off to an ovation from the opposition and the crowd, which suggested that it could be his last international appearance. Gayle however, dismissed retirement claims.

"I didn't announce any retirement," he said in a short video posted by Cricket West Indies, insisting that he would be around "until further notice".

Gayle is doing what Misbah did, gained lots of appreciation and respect initially but lost all later in his career due to greed and being in denial. Kept on playing for too long when he should have retired and was thinking about himself only and not about the team.

No matter what he does now, he will go down as an ATG : 10k ODI runs. 7k Test runs with 2 Triple tons . And obviously the T20 GOAT

But this is a sad end to his career. It's past time to call it a day.

You can die (figuritivty speaking) young as a hero or live long enough to be a villian.

Gayles 40 years old, and is carrying alot of injuries.
Is he a great of the game - yes!
He has a triple hundred in tests
A double hundred in odis
And a hundred in t20i
Iirc he has about 8,000 test runs!

Gayle deserves respect, but he should also respect the game and quit if he is no longer up to his high standards.
He is giving himself one more go, after a rest, but if he fails, he should retire, but with so much big money on offer for his servics, who can blame him if he continues, but dont get tetchy at criticism if you flop.

I worked with Chris directly for approximately 2 years. He's an interesting guy. In fact I would say he's a good guy even though he left the franchise on my watch and may not like me very much.

That said, I think this admission from Chris is a great teaching moment for Pakistan Cricket. Chris Gayle has had a full career. He's played in all formats and when available he's almost always been selected. He's made a lot of money playing Franchise cricket all over the world. If a player like him feels career risk, just imagine what our cricketers feel both international and especially domestic.

I think you have been living under a bubble or a rock because Misbah's exit was probably one of the most graceful as compared to other Pakistani greats. Not only did he have a very good series with the bat but he lead Pakistan to their first series win in West Indies. In the long run, people usually remember how you went rather than the last 3-4 series.

How can a guy say something like this with a straight face while he's literally swimming in cash? You sold your soul to franchise cricket mate, you don't deserve respect. Can't have it both ways.

Why doesn't he deserve respect? Why is earning money legally with your own hard work is being frowned upon here? Has he committed any crimes? He didn't serve time like Amir or participated in ball tampering like Steve Smith, if those players are still respected then why shouldn't he get any respect? BTW I hardly watch T20s let alone franchise cricket. I am just glad he showed middle finger to that dysfunctional cricket board who didn't deserve him anyways, West Indies is not even a real country for crying out loud. No wonder when kerry Packer created his own version of cricket the Caribbeans were at the forefront, do Lloyd, Greenidge and Viv deserve respect in your eyes?

There's nothing noble or worth respecting about guy who spends his time making money the world over by putting in less than one tenth of the effort that guys who play test cricket put in. T20 globe-trotters make more than 10 times the money as compared to test cricketers and have no real loyalty to anyone but themselves. What pressure are you playing under when you got selected in the first place on your name and people will come to see you whether you score runs or not?

Sorry but you have to draw the line somewhere and differentiate between the guys who tough it out and put it all on the line for their country and guys who just want to get rich. Just because someone makes an honest living doesn't automatically make him deserving of my respect and there has to be a clear-cut differentiation between the players who play for themselves and those who play for their country.

Franchises do respect Gayle, but they should not be expected to buy a 40 year old who scores a 50 once in 10 matches.

Chattogram Challengers want BCB to take action if Gayle doesn’t play

A new controversy involving Chris Gayle and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) have taken place as Chattogram Challengers’ team director Jalal Yunus said both Gayle and his agent knew that his name was on the draft.

Yunus also insisted that he will ask the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to take action against Gayle if he doesn’t show up for the tournament.

“His agent confirmed Chris was aware about it. Now if he does not come, we will seek a player outside the draft. But I feel (Bangladesh Cricket Board) BCB should take action in such cases to keep discipline. We maintain all the standard procedures when any national cricketer’s name came for the players’ draft.”

“Either a player or his agent can show his interest and put the name in the list. I have checked the process and everything was done according to a standard process.”

After a horrifying displaying in the Mzansi Super League (MSL) fo Jozi Stars, Gayle decided to take break from cricket and also claimed that he wasn’t even aware that his name was on the BPL draft.

“I am not going to the Big Bash (Australia’s T20 league). I’m not sure what cricket will come up, I don’t even know how my name reached the BPL, but I have been drafted in a team and I don’t even know how that happened,” he said.

He has played 103 Tests for WI. It is absurd to pigeon-hole him as a T20 mercenary. He owes WI cricket nothing.

There is a world of difference between him and the other T20 specialists who don’t even want to put in the hard yards in Tests. Besides, it is not like he has the fitness to play Tests anymore. He has been limping for years and can hardly take singles. He is surviving in franchise cricket and in LOIs purely because of his brutal hitting.

The difference between him and de Villiers is that he didn’t retire from international cricket early and still played ODIs and T20Is.

Let's not forget this guy scored two triple hundreds in test cricket, generally we keep overlooking his test accomplishments.
I rate him as better test opener than Warner.

You can sugarcoat it all you want but Gayle is a T20 mercenary now. He does not care at all about international cricket or West Indies which is evident by his attitude. This is not the Gayle of the early to mid 2000s. This is the Gayle with an inflated ego who only cares about himself, his self-image and his self-brand. He owes everything to West Indies cricket because it made him the star he is today. The team does not revolve around a player's mood but Gayle seems to think that just because he's Gayle he can announce his retirement then not retire. Then stay on for another series. Then say I'm not retiring but I don't really feel like playing the next series. What kind of nonsense is this? I hope West Indies Cricket show some spine and throw him out for good. Better to work on Ambris or Campbell then waste your time on this clown.

Atleast de Villiers is honest about himself. Unlike Gayle who thinks the entire universe revolves around him.
