What's new

Ian Chappell says Pakistan shouldn't play in Australia unless they improve....

England won the test series in 2012...when was the last time Australia won?

Anyway, Pakistan were actually quite competitive in the last series in Aus...this performance has been very bad by the bowlers and the selection has been poor.

I weirdly agree that teams which are poor in certain locations shouldn't play, who wants to watch such one sided cricket?

I wrote "In the last series they played, Australia did better than England in India" based on the fact that the last time England played in India they lost 4-0, whereas the last time Australia played in India they were competitive losing 2-1.

With the series tied 1-1, it appeared Australia would take a healthy first innings lead in the 3rd Test till a 199 run 7th wicket partnership between Pujara and Saha bailed India out.

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...india-vs-australia-3rd-test-ind-v-aus-2016-17

England in comparison were thrashed, losing the last 4 Tests of the series by 246 runs, 8 wickets, an innings and 36 runs and an innings and 75 runs.

Yep. Oz get walloped sometimes in Asia. But we win quite a few Tests- and often live rubbers that keep the series on the line too.

And we have a few series wins up our sleeve. It's not a GOOD record in Asia, but enough to keep a series honest and interesting.

I know but we're looking at it historically so it should include all recent data.

On radio commentary, Ian Chappell was absolutely withering with his assessment of Azhar and Misbah's tactics today. He hated how they have used Musa and when asked to rate Azhar's field placements today, he said he'll give them nought out of ten, not even a point for turning up to the ground! Apparently, it's the worst piece of cricket he has seen since Yousuf's captaincy at the SCG in 2010.

Always good value is Chappelli, never one to mince words.

If Pakistan are coming to Australia again and want to play, they should play against their Sheffield Shield team instead of playing against international team.

They should only come to play practice matches. At least on those they will win.

It was a bad toss to lose; if PAK had batted at least Babar and Rizu would have put up a decent score, as the pitch seems to be very easy to bat despite the false alarms at the start.

Right now pakistan should be touring Australia once every 6/8 years rather than more frequently, its got embarrasing.

Azhar said they wanted to bowl first :))

Rather Pak bowling attack is a bad attack to have, they are so bad at what they do that they take toss, pitch, condition etc right out of the equation. Most posters here won't admit this.

Watch the Aussies make the ball talk. Pitch, conditions mean nothing when you don't have the skill to bring them into play.

What's with this wrist slitting?
Have people forgotten how we thrashed Aus in the UAE in 2014 and 2018?

Stop overrating the Aussies

In 2014 only not in 2018,they drawn the test match despite not having Smith,Warner,Cummins, Hazlewood.

It's not about overrating Aussies, it's about correctly assessing the low quality of the Pakistan team. Two innings in a row Aussies have stormed to 300+ for one wicket. That is on Aussie pitches where you get some bounce, not dead dustpits in UAE where balls stays at shin height.

We thrashed them in the second match. The win margin in the second match was our highest ever for a test match against Aus

Obviously it's a low quality team but you'd be foolish to expect something from them.
It's like expecting Namibia to win the 2023 WC. It's just not going to happen.

We're playing right now like how India played here in 2012 or 13

I guess drawing against a morally down and depleted Aussie team at home without Warner, Smith, Cummins, Hazlewood counts as a thrashing in your book.

Hey...you learn something new everyday.

What would have Cummins and Hazlewood done in the UAE? :)))
Don't forget that Smith and Warner didn't play against you too AT THEIR home. Look at the difference it may have made if they had done and Indians get triggered when a person brings this point up. You wouldn't have scored as many runs as you did due to the pressure of chasing the added 200 runs that would have come if Warner and Smith were playing.
Also what did Smith and Warner do when they came in 2014?? Fair enough to Warner that he scored a 100 but still lost by 200+ runs in both matches.
Got whitewashed.

Not sure about Hazlewood but Cummins would have done.

Isn't it weird that whenever you have nothing to say back you use the same phrase (just worded differently) each time?

Well, at least i won't have to waste my time...

India WON in Australia. You DREW in UAE. Have some shame before comparing your team with the world no. 1 team. India isn’t perfect but your trundlers can’t seem to buy a wicket and got smashed by Ozzies for 300 in 70 overs yesterday

Love it when Indians get triggered. :)))
Anyways,
we WON the series in the UAE. We DREW a match in the series not the series itself lol
At least get your information right.

It’s clearly only you who is getting triggered because your team has failed you again and again

If you want to feel good about Pakistan’s performance by highlighting the absence of Warner and Smith against India, I shouldn’t interrupt you. However, the Indian pace attack (best in the world) led by Kohli (best Asian Test captain of all time) is perfectly capable of negating a technically below average batsman like Warner in any conditions.

Nevertheless, there is no point in trying to downplay India’s achievement to make yourself feel good about Pakistan. India is a thousand times better than Pakistan in every format. So what is the point?

You are comparing the 2 decades worth of losses wth 2 series losses. Besides Australia was still able tod raw one test something which Pakistan couldn't do. Australia has lost in Bangladesh also. Overseas loss is not a big deal. But sequence of losses in Australia is what Chappell is probably referring to.

What exactly are you talking about?
If you read my previous posts, you'd see that I've criticized our performance heavily.

I'm not sure if Pakistan should be playing any cricket at the top level the way things are going.

Originally when Ian said this I was mad but not I fully agree it's one thing to lose but show some fight for god sakes

Cummins is the best pace bowler in the world right now. He has the skills to walk all over the flawed techniques of our batsman on any wicket, including the flattest pitch on Earth (UAE).

Just like Pakistan can't win in Australia, Australia also can't win in subcontinent.

Chappell would've had a point had Australia been winning in subcontinent.

They’ve competed at the very least. Drew a test in the UAE, and won one in India. Those results are only going to improve with the likes of Labuschagne developing into very sound players.

Meanwhile we’re gifting hundreds to each and every one of their batsman and don’t look like scoring more than 300 with the bat.

We don’t deserve to be invited for another 8–10 years. The best we can hope for is a couple of A-tours during that period so we don’t have kids debuting here, or on the other end of the spectrum chachas who can’t bat or can’t bowl quicker than 130 kph.

Competing means nothing. Result matters.

Afghanistan competed well in the WC but they didn't win any game.

A major team like Australia should be judged based on results. They haven't won a series in subcontinent in many years.

Chappell should be humble. No need to be arrogant.

Aus even lost a match against Bangladesh in Bangladesh (no disrespect to BD).
They are no-where a good side in the Subcontinent

While I agree that Warner is a bit of a hack, he has performed against very good attacks in bouncy conditions (Steyn, Morkel, Philander)

Exactly!

Aussies are only good on bouncy tracks. They are average or below-average everywhere else.

Perhaps it’s time for Australia to field their C team against Pakistan.

It’s sad but true that Pakistan has become a minnow team and elite players like Warner, Smith, Starc, Cummins, etc should just skip these series in future.

When Chappell first said these lines I thought he was being glib.
Now I feel he was spot on.
Pakistan should visit Aus every 2 years and play one FC match against each Aus state side. Perhaps they can compete somewhat in few games atleast.

These guys really don't deserve to play international cricket. Better if these Test arenas and matches were given to Afghanistan and Ireland who would have given more fight.

Pakistan should do the same against Aus in the UAE then too.

Still, it’s not decent. He did that last time, which we can overlook, but I read he did that again this time. How it would sound if a French or German or Brazilian suggest that Aussies shouldn’t play soccer World Cup before learning to cope with big boys.

Chappel played his game hard & with passion, skill, but it’s also true that his Australia team was levelled as ugly Aussies for a reason. And, guy is extremely poor loser - setting a bad example here.

Lol.
Kuch zyada nai hogaya?

How are you actually gonna say Afghanistan and Ireland would have shown more fight?

On current form Pak will probably lose against their domestic sides, but the point is what Chappell said was extremely disrespectful and a ex-captain of his stature should have worded it better, he is not some random blogger or poster for crying out loud.

Pakistan should do the same against Aus in the UAE then too.

Australia without Smith managed to draw a Test vs full-strength Pakistan in the UAE last year.

The notion that Australia is as bad in UAE as Pakistan is in Australia is a misconception designed to make us feel better about our humiliation.

If Pakistan starts playing its reserves against Australia in the UAE, we might as well suffer a repeat of what happened in Sharjah 17 years ago.

No team is as bad in any country as Pakistan is in Australia. It is not possible. It would take a special effort to match our heroics of maintaining a 100% losing record over 20 years.

I would rather listen to Chappell than someone like Nasser Hussain and his lazy cliches about Pakistan cricket. At least we know who is honest.

Chappel sholdn't repeat this non-sense. Pakistan has been the most poor team in Aus in the last two decades, but not inviting a team at all is taking it too far.

I think biggest problem is lack of good players, but if you don't play in certain conditions then you can't really adapt to start with. If Pakistan carries most players from this tour and visit Aus again in few years then they can use thier previous experience. If it's always a new set of players then it's going to be hard.

They did in the side game. And result is for everyone to see.

Usually the international side of a country and their bench are pretty similar in terms of ability. But this is how it is for Australia:

Australia XI

Daylight

Sunlight

Moonlight

Limelight

Aus A

This makes you wonder that if Aus' bowlers get injured what would happen to their team. Even at home, despite them having their best bowlers against India - they lost. Imagine if Hazlewood and Cummins were injured... Australia would have lost 4-0

Their bench strength is extremely weak.

Pakistan are no longer a top tier cricket nation. I know it won't go down well with fans, but Chappell said this two years ago, and the Pakistan team's miserable performance in this series has shown he is completely right.

Pakistan is now a second tier team which will struggle to compete with Sri Lanka and West Indies. The PCB should offer a public apology for wasting the time and money of Aus cricket supporters.

Don't understand why people are comparing Australia record in Asia with our record in Australia. Australia have won games and series in Asia. We can't even get a draw in Australia. Australia also have players like Smith , Warner , Starc, and Cummins who you would want to see live in the flesh. So even if they won't win you will get some excitement. Other than Babar and maybe Shaheen people outside of Pakistan don't have any interest in our players.

Azhar Ali speaking to the media:

"Ask Ian Chappell that when Warner is batting on 100 then where do you put the fielders? When you don't strike with the new ball and the other team is 100-150/0 then you try some different things, you try to stop the flow of runs, build pressure etc. In a country like Australia, it's difficult to keep attacking without early wickets when the ball doesn't reverse. It's better when your bowling is on top, the runs are contained and you've taken wickets, then you do things differently. In Pindi we saw how the field placement completely changed after getting the 1st wicket. When bowlers are bowling, it's important to bowl according to the field and I don't think Ian Chappell saw that"

Players shouldn’t take Chappell seriously, time and again even players like Sachin have said that and Chappell is one of the few players Sachin spoke against but after retirement..

That was Greg Chappell not Ian.

Greg Tried to implement lot of good things.

Him and Dravid were taking India the right way but lot of politics happened. Some Chappell's and lot from Dada gang.

Chappell tried to change the culture too quickly and hence got lots of push back but somehow we are nowdays using a lot of his changes only.

He wasnt as bad. His only issue was man management which he just couldnt work upon and hence always faced issues with all teams he was in coaching capacity.

Greg was trying to be Nayak’s Anil Kapoor plus Dravid wasn’t a great ODI captain.

Also I don’t find army training to be of any point, Greg is old school if he was good he would had made a difference in other teams but he couldn’t.. Garry was the right man to lead us, Duncan Fleming was misunderstood and he instilled good qualities but Greg was understood to be as he rightly was...

Chappell and Dravid were both in wrong time. Dravid was one captain i regard highly as i felt he was actually very attacking. With him there was always a slip no matter what the situation was. The fields settings given to Zaheer and rp in Eng and Sreesanth in Sa forced them to bowl full which they benefitted a lot. With dravid i felt he didnt have the proper support of seniors in early part of his captaincy and latter part he lost his own form.

Dravid Developed the ODI side into a good chasing team, before that we were scared of batting second, it was a conscious decision by RD/Greg to chase in every match irrespective of conditions and we even set a world record with 17 consecutive successful chases in 2006.

You can question his methods but not his intentions. Also, he did come up with the idea of building proper bench strength so as to rotate players to prevent them from injury. In the environment of mistrust that prevailed at that time, this may have caused a further sense of insecurity amongst players. He was also the one who saw Raina's potential and tried to give him a run in the side. Overall, his tenure did do much more harm than good, though.
Discovering Dhoni Captaincy skills
The fitness aspect is very underrated. We saw our team age before our eyes in 2011 during the Eng/Aus tours. On the other hand, look at the fitness culture Dhoni/Kohli are establishing. Players like Ashwin have taken up weightlifting. Even in the WC2015 we had the highest run rate in the middle overs between the power plays, even higher than Australia. This showed how adept our players have become at taking singles.

Kirsten- i feel he was really lucky . To his credit he was an excellent man manager and very hard working. But the thing with Captaincy n coaching is when u 11 match winners in form both job are very easy. Thats what Made kirsetn job damn easy.

*Luckily he never had ENG, AUS tour in 2011 which would have been a real test. Nz tour which we won well Nz was a poor team that time. In Sa we drew series, well we had good team and we also won a test in Sa under Chappell also but Credit given where it is due . We drew Test series in Sa under him.

*Sachin was at the peak during kirsten phase. He scored like a machine. Zaheer khan hit his peek as well which hadnt chappell kicked him wont have happened. It was chappell who got Zaheer, Sehwag out of their comfort zone and dropped them so they could work hard n come back. Gambhir was also at hi peek and dhoni never had a dull time. Bhajji enjoyed home series. So everyone's perfomance was great.

*Kirsten ICC tournament Record- 2011 Wc at home won, 2009 Ct in Sa - very poor, T20 Wc in 2009,2010 very poor.

Fletcher- He was a good man-manager i have never heard people having issue with his attitude. His problem was he took it as a job and had no passion His age didnt allow him to train with boys like Kirsten or Kumble did. He wasnt someone who could give a earful to a player like Wright, Chappell, Kirsten , kumble all could.

*His Icc Tournament record- 2013 CT won, 2012 t20- poor, 2014 t20 - finalist , 2015Wc- semi finalist. So his ICC tournaments perfomance looked much better than Kirsten who just had one win that to at home.

*Board president Srini Mama cared all about money

*Fall of seniors like Sachin, sehwag, gambhir, bhajji, zaheer, Laxman , dravid all pillars fell at same time. No team would have risen of it.

*Kohli becoming a champion player was something he enjoyed but one player cant do much as compare to kirsten era where everyone was a match winner.

Top post but if Greg had stayed longer all the Indian players that wanted to prove Greg wrong -Sachin, Viru, Zaheer wouldn't had been able to do it.. so whatever happened, happened for the best all 3 of em.

There was a lot of improvement of Zaheer and Viru under Garry though.. Zaheer was taking his own decisions to an extent where he literally became the bowling captain..positive mindset helped them ..

So it’s good, its a process and every coach did something good .. sometimes it works immediately sometimes later.. India’s test performance under Gary was a big plus imo.. Greg would had created a lot of bitterness..

Former Test captain Ian Chappell has made a scathing assessment of England's top-order stocks following the visitors' dismal end to day two of the Boxing Day Test.

When asked for his views on England's alarming plummet over the final hour, in which Joe Root's men limped to stumps at 4-31, Chappell was highly critical of Haseeb Hameed, Zak Crawley and axed opener Rory Burns.

"They haven't got too many options (for the top order)," Chappell told Wide World of Sports.

"Really, it doesn't make a difference what changes they make; it doesn't seem to help them.

"Knowing that the top order is really struggling is a big advantage, and it's an even bigger advantage when Australia have got two really good quickies in (Mitchell) Starc and (Pat) Cummins."

Hameed was backed by England's selectors for the first three Tests of the Ashes but failed to lock in his spot, making scores of 25, 27, six, consecutive ducks and seven.

Burns was selected for the first two games and was cut for the MCG Test, having registered a golden duck, 13, four and 34.

The left-hander was horrendous against the first ball of the series, making a mess of his footwork as Starc bowled him behind his legs.

And while Crawley was recalled to the Test side at the expense of Burns, the 23-year-old had an even more meagre output in Melbourne, mustering 12 and five.

"The fact that they get bogged down by the Australians (is their biggest problem)," Chappell said.

"The Australians know that even if they stay there for a little while they're not going to do much damage. That gives them a big advantage.

"They're making them play early on, they're bowling good balls and, importantly, they're catching most of the things coming their way. So that makes Australia really dangerous."

While England had kept their fading Ashes hopes alive through a magnificent showing with the ball earlier on day two, Australia's electric final hour decimated the great work the tourists had done.

So hot have Australia been and so poor have England been that the first innings defeat of the series is not out of the question.

England will resume their second dig still trailing by 51 runs, with Root on 12 and all-rounder Ben Stokes on two.

"I know what (the dressing room) should be like. They should be devastated with the way they've played," Chappell said.

"They keep talking about showing fight but all they do is talk about it; they don't show it.

"Australia would be cock-a-hoop."

The Pakistan side of 2019 was a very inexperienced side hence they didn't even put up a fight but they were much better as compared to England. None of their 2 matches ended before the completion of the 7th session.

This was racism from Chappell, pure and simple. Very easy to tell the little brown people they aren't worthy of touring the great Australian land but he would never say such a thing to England, despite the humiliation after humiliation after humiliation that England have suffered in Australia.

Let's also not forget the last two times Aussies have played us the UAE they have barely (BARELY!, 8 wickets down on the last day) drawn one match and lost the others by 373 runs, 221 runs and 356 runs. So maybe they should also ask themselves if they are worthy of playing Pakistan in Asia.

I would not take Chappel’s comment about Pakistan personally. Pakistan deserves a lot of slack for their performances in Australia over the years (as a top tier team). I back Chappel on this one. Humiliate Pakistan to such an extent that they take their Australian tours very seriously and prepare better.

Mind you, we are not asking Pakistan to go and bash Australia in Australia. All we are asking is a bit more fight and pride in their performances.

You need to get over this, who in their right mind thinks about what Chappell says and then to even think about it years later. Thats two years of free rent in your head for Chappell.

To be honest with you, seeing this thread was the first time I had even thought of him since probably when he made these comments. So no, he doesn't live 'rent free in my head'.

It’s not racism, it’s history. Ashes has history, Australia-Pakistan doesn’t.

Maybe he is waiting for Warner to hit a triple century

It can’t be said that that the Pakistani team was better than the English team.

What may be said is that the Pakistani batting was better than England’s while England’s bowling was better. Pakistan conceded about 90 runs per wicket for the 13 Australian wickets they took.

It was an ignorant comment from Chappell, no it wasn't racism and no it wasn't justified either.

If we start shaming countries for their performances in specific countries you'd have half the international calendar wiped off. Sri Lanka haven't won a test in India. Ever. West Indies have never won a test match in Sri Lanka. England have regularly been humiliated in West Indies. Whereas even India were utterly humiliated the last time they toured New Zealand. New Zealand on the other hand haven't put up a credible performance in Australia in nearly two decades (which too was a 0-0 draw) and last won there during the days of Richard Hadlee! Australia almost always embarrass themselves in Asia and have won 2 test matches (1 against Bangladesh) there in the last decade.

That said pointing towards a racist angle is utterly outrageous as well.

As someone who has read Chappell's columns on ESPNCricinfo for quite some time, it seems obvious to me that the guy is simply out of his depth. His columns give you the feeling that you're reading a grumpy old man with an old school mentality who is not interested in being politically correct and who is still somewhat wistful about his glory days. Which is exactly who he is.
