ICC accredits biomechanics lab at LUMS as testing centre

• “The accreditation of LUMS biomechanical lab is a significant development and it is a step in line with PCB’s aim of equipping the board with modern and world-class facilities,” says PCB Managing Director Wasim Khan

• “This reflects the PCB’s effort and commitment to deal with suspect illegal bowling actions,” says ICC General Manager – Cricket, Geoff Allardice

Lahore, 25 July 2019:

The biomechanical lab at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has been accredited by the International Cricket Council as a testing centre for suspected illegal bowling actions, becoming the first such facility in Pakistan.

The centre joins the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, Loughborough University, Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai and the University of Pretoria as testing centres for players reported in international cricket under the ICC Suspect Illegal Bowling Action Regulation.

The facility will be used for biomechanical analysis of players at various levels with an aim of improving their performances and ironing out technical deficiencies.

The testing centre will also help the PCB in identifying and fixing illegal bowling actions for players reported in both domestic and international cricket.

The facility at the LUMS was assessed against a range of criteria, including having an indoor area large enough to allow a player to bowl off his or her full run-up; a motion analysis system with a minimum of 12 high-speed cameras capable of producing three-dimensional data, and suitably qualified personnel experienced in using such systems and capable of implementing the ICC testing protocol.

The ICC has provided a full set of testing equipment and software to the LUMS testing centre, as it has done with the other accredited centres, to allow for a consistent assessment of bowlers across the different facilities worldwide.

PCB Managing Director Wasim Khan said: “The accreditation of the biomechanics lab at LUMS is a significant development and it is a step in the right direction in line with PCB’s aim of equipping the board with modern and world-class facilities.

“The facility will help us identify and rectify faulty bowling actions at an early stage. In the past we didn’t have a testing centre and a number of Pakistan bowlers were called both at the domestic and international level and then had to undergo remodelling of their action, often at a stage where it was tough for them to regain their effectiveness.

“The lab will also be available to players from around the world and we will work closely with the ICC to make the facility readily available for testing of suspect bowling actions. The facility won’t be restricted for bowling actions only and players at all levels can sort out their technical deficiencies through biomechanical analysis under the supervision of coaches and experts.”

ICC’s General Manager – Cricket Geoff Allardice, said: “I want to congratulate the Pakistan Cricket Board, which worked in conjunction with LUMS to fulfil the criteria required for an ICC accredited testing centre. This reflects the PCB’s effort and commitment to deal with suspect illegal bowling actions.

“The accreditation of the LUMS University as an ICC testing centre means bowlers reported in international cricket and Pakistan’s domestic competitions can be referred to this facility, where they will be tested according to international protocols.”

Great investment and very much needed. This will enable Pakistan cricket to identify and subsequently change illegal bowling actions at an early stage of spinners coming into the system.

Now, they need to benchmark every FC & prominent age group bowlers gradually. If it's used to save air travel expenses (aka, "correct" MoHa's action at Lahore instead of sending him in UK ....) ... :(

The days of Pakistani bowlers failing bowling tests are gone now :sarf2

The plan was set into motion by Shehryar Khan and he should be commended for that.

Lats name this facility after Hafeez, :steyn he was the one costing lots of money to PCB and they decided to have their own

Actually naseem ashraf but still it’s a good positive move to finally get a world class centre approved after all these years. It will do wonders to test the players actions not just for legality but also for injuries and effectiveness.

Let’s just think about it for a second..approximately 24-30 bowlers (I’m guessing all off spinners) careers have been ended due to dodgy actions and our inability to test them locally before sending them into the international arena. There is a reason why the likes of hafeez and Malik have ruled the roost as off spinning all rounders and that’s because all the competition has been wiped out.

Now of course we have a chance to develop genuine spinners with clean actions at an early stage. This has to be one of the most important stories in Pakistan cricket this year.

Much-needed and long overdue.

Absolutely no excuse for bowlers to be chucking in domestic cricket, which has plagued Pakistan cricket for many years.

Yes Nasim Ashraf bought the gadgets, but the plans were stalled till around 2015-16 till Shehryar forged a partnership with LUMS.

I am guessing a complex structure of commission earning companies were formed to benefit from this deal.

I dont expect an inch of good from the cricket board.
