Sri Lanka's contracted players have called for an investigation into allegations by former player and selector Pramodya Wickramasinghe of corrupt practices during their one-day series defeat to Zimbabwe.

The players wrote a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket following the claims of Wickramasinghe, who alleged there had been foul play in the fourth match of the Zimbabwe series in July.

Wickramasinghe had questioned former skipper Angelo Mathews batting at three instead of five and the then-captain's decision not to bowl Lasith Malinga at a key stage in the contest.

A Sri Lanka cricket statement read: "The national cricketers including 40 contracted players have called for an immediate inquiry into certain 'shocking' allegations made by former Sri Lanka cricketer and selector, Pramodya Wickramasinghe insinuating unnatural and mysterious match patterns.

"The cricketers, in a petition signed by all including both captains Dinesh Chandimal and Upul Tharanga to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), have drawn attention into what they say was shockingly disparaging and hurtful statements by Wickramasinghe to a private television station that tend to give the general public a suspicious impression about them.

"The players have drawn exception to Wickramasinghe's 'serious' allegations highlighting nine issues that unnatural and mysterious match patterns take place. They have refuted the allegations as totally baseless and stressed that they perform under the national flag for their motherland sacrificing even their time with their families with a 200 per cent commitment with nothing short of achieving the ultimate goal of victory.

"While expressing profound shock and displeasure at a former national cricketer and selector making such serious allegations, the players have totally rejected them and urged Sri Lanka Cricket to initiate an immediate inquiry by summoning Wickramasinghe in fairness to their good names that have been slandered by such diabolic allegations. They have further challenged Wickramasinghe to prove his allegations."

They should investigate Day 5 of the Cardiff Test in 2011.

Day 5 started and the First Innings hadn't even been completed. And then Sri Lanka was bowled all out in just over an hour.

Have well and truly become the laughing stock of international cricket.

SLC pledge to cooperate with ICC corruption probe

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s cricket board on Sunday asked all national players and its employees to cooperate fully with an ICC investigation following allegations by former players of match-fixing and other forms of corruption.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said its executive committee had directed players and staff to cooperate with investigators from the anti-corruption unit of the International Cricket Council, which announced its investigation on Saturday.

“We request all those who have any information to come forward and help with this inquiry by declaring all their information and evidence...” it said in a statement.

The board said unsubstantiated allegations made by former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga and ex-player and national selector Pramodya Wickremasinghe were “damaging the reputation of our players, our cricket and our nation”.

“We are committed to working closely with the ICC to complete this inquiry expeditiously and give our players the freedom to concentrate on playing their cricket,” the board said.

It did not say what exactly was being probed and whether a particular individual or group was being investigated.

The ICC announced the probe a day after SLC said that 40 contracted national team players had asked for an immediate inquiry into ‘shocking’ allegations by Wickremasinghe.

The ICC did not give any details as to what the nature of their investigation entailed, only that ACU officers had recently visited the country.

“There is currently an ICC Anti-Corruption Unit investigation underway in Sri Lanka,” the ACU’s General Manager Alex Marshall said in a statement on Sunday. “Naturally as part of this we are talking to a number of people. We will not comment any further on an ongoing investigation.”

Wickremasinghe, a former pace bowler and ex-national selector, told a local television station last week he was concerned about ‘unnatural match patterns’ and player selections. He also blamed the SLC for the team’s poor performance.

The SLC maintained that players had refuted Wickremasinghe’s allegations as ‘totally baseless’ and added that they performed for their ‘motherland... with a 200 percent commitment’.

Sri Lanka recently suffered the embarrassment of losing all nine international matches in a home campaign against India.

Virat Kohli’s visitors took the Test series 3-0 and then won the One-day International series 5-0 before triumphing in the one-off Twenty20 International by seven wickets in Colombo earlier this month.

Wickremasinghe’s allegations are not the first to swirl around the Sri Lanka team.

In July former captain Ranatunga — who led the islanders to the 1996 World Cup glory — demanded an inquiry into the team’s defeat by India in the 2011 final in Mumbai.

“When we lost, I was distressed and I had a doubt,” Ranatunga said in July. “We must investigate what happened to Sri Lanka at the 2011 World Cup final. I cannot reveal everything now, but one day I will. There must be an inquiry.”

Former Sri Lanka fast bowler and the selector Pramodya Wickramasinghe may be sued for the “defamation”, it is learnt here.

According to the sources in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the petition, signed by country’s 40 top cricketers, whose integrity has been challenged by Pramodya Wickramasinghe, will be handed over to the CID.

“At present the two-member committee (Ayesh Weerakoddy and Lakshman de Silva) will investigate the matter”, a top SLC official said.

“The allegations on cricketers are false and if the same can not be proved by Pramodya Wickramasinghe, a defamation case may be filed against him”, the source said.

When approached by this Reporter, Pramodya Wickramasinghe said, “I had only suggested the rumor doing round here be probed”.

“I read in the news papers that the ICC will inquire in the matter. I am yet to be invited for the questioning. I will appear only if the independent panel is appointed by the SLC, not otherwise”.

“Even to the ICC, my answer will be the same. I had only aired my views to probe the rumor”, the 47-year-old ex-fast bowler signed off.
