he ICC Men’s T20 World Cup gets underway on Sunday when Oman take on Papua New Guinea in a fascinating opening fixture befitting the tournament's return from a five-year hiatus.

Oman first appeared in an ICC Men's T20 World five years ago; the most recent edition of the tournament. It was a successful campaign for the first-timers, who won one of their three matches. This time around, they'll have much loftier ambitions. The nation ranked 18th in the world on the MRF Tyres ICC T20I team rankings will be eyeing a spot in the Super 12 stage with two qualification places up for grabs in each of the First Round groups.

They won't have to look far for motivation either as they are spurred on by home support. Of course, they won't have things easy.

Papua New Guinea go into the tournament opener full of confidence, ranked three places higher than their opponents. And with fixtures against Scotland and Bangladesh to come this match could well determine the World Cup fate of both nations.

The travelling Papua New Guinea squad are the first group of players to represent the country at a men’s World Cup, 48 years after the nation was named as an associate member by the ICC. They came close in 2013 and 2015, losing late in the qualification process. But there was no such heartbreak this time around, with the team welcomed home by thousands of jubilant fans when they sealed their spot in the tournament. But the East Asia-Pacific qualifiers have had to wait for their World Cup bow, with the pandemic meaning there has been two years between that qualifying celebration in Dubai and Sunday’s opening match against Oman.

Oman aren’t exactly World Cup old-timers themselves, with this tournament being only the country’s second appearance at a Men’s T20 World Cup. But, as mentioned earlier, the 2021 tournament has an extra-special edge for the nation due to their role as co-hosts. For the opening week, all Group B matches in the first round will be held at Muscat’s Al Amerat Cricket Stadium, giving Oman home advantage in their bid to face off with the biggest and best in the world during the later weeks of the tournament at UAE’s higher-capacity venues.

The tournament debutants vs the World Cup co-hosts. What better way to get the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup underway!

The Teams
Oman possess an experienced core that has steered them through international cricket for much of the past World Cup cycle. The fast-medium bowling trio of Bilal Khan, Mohammad Nadeem and Kaleemullah will be supported by a plethora of slow-bowling all-rounders, while the opening batting partnership of Jatinder Singh and Aqib Ilyas are strong boundary-hitters.

Possible Oman playing XI: Jatinder Singh, Aqib Ilyas, Ayaan Khan, Zeeshan Maqsood, Mohammad Nadeem, Sandeep Goud, Naseem Khushi, Kaleemullah, Khawar Ali, Fayyaz Butt, Bilal Khan

Papua New Guinea have also brought a squad packed full of all-rounders. Eight of the starting XI had a bowl in the warm-up loss against Ireland, with plenty of pace-off options at Vala’s disposal if the pitch takes turn.

Possible Papua New Guinea playing XI: Assad Vala, Tony Ura, Charles Amini, Sese Bau, Norman Vanua, Simon Atai, Kiplin Doriga, Jason Kila, Nosaina Pokana, Damien Ravu, Chad Soper

Key Players

Papua New Guinea’s stand-out player is captain and batting linchpin Assad Vala. The opening batter has three T20 international half centuries to his name and forged an important partnership with Tony Ura at the top of the order during the qualifying tournament.

Vala and Ura averaged 60 for the first wicket throughout that qualifier and their weight of runs will again hold the key to Papua New Guinea’s chances at the tournament proper.

Bilal Khan is Oman’s leading T20 international wicket-taker with 51 dismissals in his 35 internationals to date.

The left-arm seamer will likely take the new ball in search of early scalps and is also a more-than-competent slip fielder.

After Oman’s tournament opener with Papua New Guinea earlier in the day, attention will turn to the second match of Groupd B of the First Round, with Bangladesh facing Scotland in Al Amerat.

Bangladesh once again enter through the ICC Men's T20 World Cup's First Round, having done the same in the last two 16-team tournaments. While yet to slip in the four-team group phase, they face a tricky proposition in this year’s competition, and take on arguably the strongest of their group opponents first up in the form of a Scottish team hungry for global tournament success.

Appearing at three T20 World Cups, Scotland’s record of just one win in seven matches is perhaps a little unfair, considering final over losses to both Afghanistan and Zimbabwe at the 2016 tournament. Scotland have won 16 of their 30 T20I matches since the disappointment of the Indian campaign, and qualified for this year’s tournament after a thumping 90-run do-or-die victory over UAE in Dubai.

The two teams are yet to cross paths in the tournament’s history, with Scotland victorious in their solitary T20I meeting nine years ago. On neutral Dutch territory, Richie Berrington plundered an even 100 off just 58 balls to set Bangladesh 163 for victory, with a then T20I debutant Josh Davey taking three wickets in a 34-run victory over the Tigers.

Berrington, Davey and three other members of that winning side feature in Scotland’s tournament squad, including Kyle Coetzer, now captain of the side and opening the batting. Coetzer (1411 runs) only trails Berrington (1517) as the most prolific run-scorer for Scotland, with the skipper leading his side to victories in seven of their last 11 match-ups.

On the other side, Mahmud Ullah has similar form leading his chargers, thanks to two five-match home series victories over Australia (4-1) and New Zealand (3-2). Only South Africa’s 12 T20I victories in the calendar year better Bangladesh’s nine, with a 2-1 series victory against Zimbabwe to add to their preparation.

Bangladesh’s skipper, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim are the only squad members at this year’s tournament from the 2012 side that fell to Scotland, with Shakib’s 31 the top score in Bangladesh’s resistance on that particular afternoon. His bowling was largely negotiated though, finishing with figures of 1/37 from his four-over allotment.

Outsiders in this particular match-up, a win for Scotland in this fixture would throw Group B wide open.

The Teams

With Tamim Iqbal no longer in the Bangladesh setup, their first questions come at the top of the order, with both Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar potentially joining Mohammad Naim to open the batting. Sarkar may well slide to three, with the rest of the order fluid given match situations.

Possible Bangladesh playing XI: Mohammad Naim, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmud Ullah (c), Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain/Mohammad Saifuddin, Nurul Hasan, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

Despite the loss of Oli Hairs to an injury sustained in warm-up action, Scotland have all bases covered in their side, with depth on both sides in their 15-man group. A mix of power and touch at the top and a middle-order including Berrington and Calum MacLeod. Assuming left-arm orthodox bowlers Mark Watt and Hamza Tahir both play, Coetzer and the selection team will have to mull over a ‘good’ selection problem while picking the fast bowlers, with Safyaan Sharif, Josh Davey, Brad Wheal and Ally Evans potentially fighting for two spots.

Possible Scotland playing XI: Kyle Coetzer (c), George Munsey, Matthew Cross (wk), Richie Berrington, Calum MacLeod, Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Safyaan Sharif, Josh Davey, Hamza Tahir

Key Players

Second to Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi on the MRF Tyres T20I All-Rounder Rankings, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan boasts a world-class record with both ball and bat, and will undoubtedly lead his country’s charge.

Needing two wickets to overtake Lasith Malinga as the most prolific wicket-taker in men’s T20I history, Shakib boasts nine T20I fifties, motoring at a strike rate of 121.41 and averaging a tick under 23 in the middle order.

A batting veteran, Calum MacLeod is the best player of spin in the Scottish line-up and can bank on the experiences of over 50 T20I matches.

Striking at 114 in T20I cricket, MacLeod is able to accelerate through an array of shots against all forms of bowling, or play a more circumspect role if required.

Really looking forward for second match. Bangladesh need to take this very serious scotland is decent side and have capability to beat Bangladesh.

PNG have played well so far. Oman could be in trouble if they post anything over 165-170.

Well right, myself watching the tournament has kicked off by Googling how to pronounce Papua New Guinea and also as to in which continent it lies. :))

No bite in Papua NG bowling. have tried 5 bowlers already to break this P'ship

Terrible collapse from PNG, explains why PNG are on such a losing streak. Other than Asad Vala and Amini they don't seem to have much resistance from others.

It will come as a surprise but Oman actually were lucky to qualify for this event because Zimbabwe not playing (as they were suspended at the time) meant an extra spot was open and Oman were the team that qualified 6th.

In last 2 years though, Oman have come up a long way while PNG who were the runners up have gone significantly down the ladder.

Respect go PNG to raise a 80-90% organic side to compete at this level but they are decades away from proper competitive cricket at international standard

I TRULY hope the DJ in this game isn’t part of the super 12 games. The guy is screaming on the mic “Singh is King” repetitively🤣

PNG reminds me of Japan from last U-19 World Cup.

They have works to do. But, this is good exposure for them.

Oman - 131/0 after 13.4 overs (target: 130).

Oman win by 10 wickets.

Crushing win.

Anyone who says that pbg doesnt deserve to be here should remember that png quakified for this event as they were runner ups

Brilliant from Oman.

Excellent all round performance.

PNG - 129/9 (20)
OMAN - 131/0 (13.4)

CRR: 9.59

Player of the Match

Zeeshan Maqsood

An unbeaten 131-run opening-wicket partnership between Aaqib Ilyas and Jatinder Singh guides Oman to a comprehensive win over Papua New Guinea in the opening match of ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 with six overs to spare.

Bangladesh have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah(c), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan(w), Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

Scotland (Playing XI): George Munsey, Kyle Coetzer(c), Matthew Cross(w), Richie Berrington, Calum MacLeod, Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Josh Davey, Safyaan Sharif, Bradley Wheal

Bangladesh have decided to chase! I feel like this is a bad decision.

Scotland can win if they put up 160-170.

Taskin Ahmed bowling with pace and aggression. His highest speed so far was 149 Kph.

Poor poor cricket from Scotland.

Looks like it's going to be Oman who'll be going to Group 1.

Very strong performance by Bangladesh. Impressive.

I expected more from Scotland, but Bangladesh bowled very well in PP. Scotland can't play spin.

Bangladesh have the team to win this T20 World Cup. They thrive in these conditions.

I expected better from Scotland. They may not reach 100 here.

They are better than this, but credit to Bangladesh, they've beaten teams like Australia and New Zealand in such conditions, Scotland are easy meat for them.

Minor recovery from Scotland.

Scotland - 87/6 after 15 overs.

They need at least 130-140 to give bowlers something to defend.

Scotland - 104/6 after 17 overs.

This is good recovery from Scotland.

135-140 can be tricky here.

Taskin is not good for these surfaces. I don't know why he is getting a game over spinner Nasum.

He is leaking runs here.

Scotland end with 140/9 after 20 overs.

Bangladesh need 141 to win.

Scotland have something to defend now.
