After a loss in their opening game, Bangladesh have another challenge coming up against co-hosts Oman in their Group B fixture.


Bangladesh were left with some difficult questions about their batting after Scotland consigned them to a loss on the opening day of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021. They have little time to get their campaign back on track, as a defeat on Tuesday to Oman could knock a proud cricketing nation out of the tournament in the First Round.

Bangladesh were found lacking on a number of factors on Sunday: down on boundaries, chewing up dot balls and lacking in ways to attack both in the Powerplay and the death. They were just 25/2 in the Powerplay – a period of play that is proving to be key in matches in the region in recent weeks.

The team have won series against Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand this year, though, so will be backing themselves to bounce back quickly.

Oman will be wary of the wounded Tigers, with the co-hosts themselves riding high after a dominant 10-wicket win against PNG in front of a home crowd. They ensured that Sri Lanka had a wobble in the warm-up games, and will be hoping to use all their learning and preparation from the past few weeks against Bangladesh too.

If they manage to surprise the higher-ranked side, they will find themselves on two wins and in an excellent position to go through to the Super 12s. A loss will not be the end of their campaign, though Oman were defeated by Scotland in the 2019 Qualifier, and won't want to rely on a result in the third match.

The Teams
Bangladesh's bowlers did a good job to reduce Scotland to 53/6, and came in for praise from their skipper. Spinners Mahedi Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan were especially effective in drying up the runs and shared five wickets. However, there might be some shuffling in their batting order, with the opening pair coming under pressure.

Possible Bangladesh XI: Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (c), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan (wk), Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman.

Oman's mild concern will be that their middle order didn't get a hit in the first match. Ayaan Khan, who did not bowl in the first game, could give them another left-arm spin option, with off-spinner Nestor Dhamba also on the bench.

Key Players
Jatinder Singh: The Oman opener top-scored for his side with 73* off 42 balls against PNG. The knock included four sixes. He is also good on the sweep shot, so he will have a job to do against Bangladesh's spin attack.

Liton Das: The Bangladesh opener’s strike-rate is especially high in the Powerplay, coming in at around 142 as against a career strike-rate of 125 in all T20s. In the UAE, where a good start has been key, his team will expect him to take on the responsibility. His role will also be important if Bangladesh are playing with an eye on the run-rate.


What They Said

Mahmudullah, Bangladesh captain: “Our batting is a concern. We have to bat better. We have to play aggressive cricket, regardless of the situation. We have a deep batting line-up, with Mohammad Saifuddin at No.9. We may need to think over some changes."

Zeeshan Maqsood, Oman captain: "We have to look at our fielding, and minimise our mistakes. Our catching is alright, but ground fielding has to be better, [we struggled] due to nerves. We can't take it easy and we need to correct our mistakes."
 
Scotland and Papua New Guinea face off in a crucial second match for both Group B teams.

Scotland and PNG have had contrasting starts to their ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 campaigns. While Kyle Coetzer's men caused a stir by defending a modest total against Bangladesh for only their second win in World Cups, tournament debutants PNG were overwhelmed by Oman on the opening day.

Scotland declared themselves "humbled" and "excited" at the position they find themselves in, and insisted they weren't thinking too far ahead about potentially topping the table. But whether they say it aloud or not, their second game on Tuesday offers a good chance to put themselves in the best position to finish in the top two of the group and make it to the Super 12 stage.

For PNG, meanwhile, another loss would signal a premature end to their campaign. With a knack of playing their best with their backs against the wall though, they would be the first to back themselves to turn things around.

Scotland have played PNG in two T20Is and won both times. The first of those was in the 2019 Qualifier, while the most recent came earlier this month in the lead up to the World Cup. However, the teams are familiar with the threat the other poses, having played each other plenty through the years, including in ODIs in recent weeks.

Although both sides suffered batting collapses in their opening games, they boast considerable batting depth. They both showed how despite early setbacks, they were capable of attacking through the innings.

Against Bangladesh, Scotland struggled against pace early on, and that offers PNG the best chance to make a breakthrough. Those like George Munsey and Calum MacLeod are especially strong against spin. The PNG bowlers were short on discipline against Oman, and will do well to recalibrate quickly.

The Teams
Scotland have no reason to tinker with a winning line-up. Their depth of batting worked well for them, as did their bowling variety. They have the option of bringing in Hamza Tahir, a left-arm spin option to work with Mark Watt, who's had some success against PNG previously.

Possible Scotland playing XI: Kyle Coetzer (c), George Munsey, Matthew Cross, Richie Berrington, Calum MacLeod, Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Josh Davey, Safyaan Sharif, Brad Wheal.

According to batter Lega Siaka, PNG's job is to pick themselves up: "Just do the little things right and the big things will take care of themselves." Captain Assad Vala's challenge will be to identify his best bowling line-up.

Vala will hope to shake off an ankle injury sustained while batting in the first match, while seamer Chad Soper is in a race against time to prove his fitness, and may make his way into the XI.

Key Players
Mark Watt: The left-armer impressed with both bat and ball in Scotland's opener against Bangladesh. Coming in at 53/6, he first helped steady the innings before drying up the runs with his left-arm spin. His final over in the death was particularly important, as he went for just five runs in the 18th.

Norman Vanua: One of an array of all-rounders in the PNG side, Vanua adds important batting heft in the lower-middle order. He didn't get going in the first game, but remains an important cog in the side. He hasn't bowled in recent matches, because of a shoulder injury, but is expected to have recovered. If he bowls, his medium-pace will be handy.

Michael Leask (Scotland): "At the moment we're just trying to keep our feet on the ground, take every game as it comes. PNG are going to be quite a force in the next game. We've played against them quite a few times. We know exactly what they're going to come with. They post their own challenges. At the moment we're just trying to take it day by day, game by game ... Our guys are in a really good headspace."

Assad Vala PNG captain: "Some positives from the [Oman] game was just in the batting. I thought we showed some character, getting to a Powerplay at 40-odd after losing two wickets early on ... Next two games, we just want to go back, talk about and reflect what we need to do. We just need to focus on ourselves and not worry about Scotland and Bangladesh at the moment."
 
I´m supporting Oman, and I really hope that they knock Bangladesh out of the tournament tonight. Enough of their dragged on piece of nonsense for years without yielding any result. I know that I run the risk of coming across as extremely bitter and personal, but trust me, I´ve myself been a huge supporter of their cricket the recent years, and it has all gone unrewarded. Time for heads to get rolled!

I dont think Bangladesh getting knocked out will be good for the WC. They bring with them a massive following and interest to the game regardless to their performances.

Bangladesh will beat Oman comfortably. They are a much more experienced team.
Rather surprising that some people here expect Oman to win.

They should, but its cricket. A lot of people would not have thought Scotland would beat Bangladesh. The last I remember, Jatinder Singh is a very good batsman. The side must be jubilant and fancying their chances in beating a depleted Bangladesh side.

Bangladesh are good but when you have players like Shakib in the dressing room, you can expect a toxic atmosphere regardless of how good the individual is as a match winner.

A lot of these associates have displayed that they are capable of having good partnerships for large parts of the game, but then do not understand how to deal with the loss of a wicket, which is then followed by lots of wickets falling. Need to find a way out of these consistent, catastrophic breakdowns.

One minute they are 100-2 in 13 overs, the next minute they are 105 -7 in 16

Scotland and Netherlands are pretty strong associates. I think they may end up getting Test statuses next.
 
Scotland need to be on the money with the ball and bowl out PNG for a measly total. Would put so much pressure on Bangladesh tonight!

Definitely.

If Scotland win by a big margin here, Bangladesh also may have to beat PNG by a big margin.

But, if Scotland beat Oman, BD-Oman game becomes a knockout.

They won’t

But Scotland can bowl them out for 80 odd if they don’t mess around. PNG have one or two guys who are capable of scoring 30 odd maybe. The rest are all club standard batsmen
 
PNG are a better fielding side than Pakistan. Watching them field and you can’t tell that they’re an associate team.
 
Bangladesh is lucky that this year two teams from each group qualify for the main event instead of one like in 2016.

Still could potentially see Oman pulling of another upset and knocking the tigers out lmao

Oman can definitely beat Bangladesh.

Oman beat Ireland during 2016 World T20. They have been rising rapidly.

It can definitely make things tricky for Bangladesh if Scotland win by a big margin today.

But, I also expect BD to beat PNG by a big margin. PNG are extremely poor.

I feel USA or Nepal could've given better fight here than PNG.
 
PNG's batting doesn't look too bad. Tony Ura is a good batter. He once scored 151 in an ODI game.

But, their bowling is really poor.
 
A part of me is happy that Bangladesh lost to Scotland the other day.

Some BD fans were getting too arrogant and players were getting too confident. They have been humbled.

Zimbabwe were never a South Africa! South Africa will recover in some years, they are the team who came back to international cricket after 20+ years ban and immediately became one of the stronger team...

PNG batted better than Bangladesh here.

This is how Bangladesh needed to bat last game.
 
Ideally, Scotland needed to win this by 50 runs or more.

Then Oman could bat first and post around 150 to Bangladesh at worst. And Bangladesh would know that they need to chase that score down in about 16-17 overs

As such, Bangladesh will play with a lot less stress

For sure.

Scotland missed a chance. Scotland may now have to beat Oman because Oman have a good NRR.
 
Scotland can be eliminated if these things happen:

Bangladesh beat Oman
Bangladesh beat PNG by a big margin
Oman beat Scotland while Oman's NRR is superior.
 
Scotland have a +23 run lead


So Bangladesh need to beat Oman by 30 runs or more and they should be back on track

It can happen. That would be the worst defeat in BD's history.

PNG were really good today but their bowling needs work.

You would expect a Test nation to score 165 against Oman.

But, knowing Bangladesh (a team that often lose against associates), they may score much less.

It will be a good game hopefully.
 
I like the fact BD have chosen to bat first. They should've batted first against Scotland also.
