South African spin trio deny Afghanistan

The three-pronged South Africa twin attack of Tabraiz Shamsi, Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin defended a modest 146-run target as the Proteas beat Afghanistan by 41 runs in Abu Dhabi.

A steady 31 from Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram’s 48(35) set the platform in the first innings, with David Miller smashing 20 from 10 at the death to lift the total to 145/5.

Afghanistan’s reply got off to an inauspicious start, with openers Mohammad Shahzad and Hazratullah Zazai both dismissed without scoring.

As the required run rate crept up, Afghanistan were forced to take risks, and the wickets fell all-too regularly for the chase to ever gather momentum. Captain Mohammad Nabi top-scored with an unbeaten 34 in his side’s 104/8 off 20 overs but it was too little too late.

Kohli seems to be the weak link. Back in 2007, SRT, Ganguly, Dravid, etc. skipped the World Cup. Not saying that Kohli should give up so early but at some point he can think about quitting T20I altogether and focus on ODI/tests.

Someone just said, "Suryakumar Yadav knows how to manure the field". I think it was Laxman :yk

Kohli looks seriously out of form. Or is he simply past it now?

What a jaffa!

If Pandya can't bowl, he should ideally be not part of XI. His batting isn't good enough to warrant him a spot as a specialist batsman.

I know its only a warm-up game, but Jordan would really be wanting to hide his face atm. That was a nightmare over!

For a team like India which has quite a lot of options, they do tolerate a lot of shenanigans from Pandya. Not as good a cricketer as he thinks he is.

Hold your horses guys, teams looking tip top, nice vibes from jersey, good fielding, will chase this down me thinks :)

Well played india ! Few observations from my side -
1. Punch some holes in the jersey for better ventilation , cant sweat like this & waste energy.
2. Superb bowling by bhuvi & shami - really good, they will be the key.
3. Drop ishan - hes mediocre & a burden on suryakumar, hardik - youre still the man.
4. Baaki sab first class hai 😎 , and yeah stay a bit far from dhoni ;) ,

These warmup games needs to be taken with a pinch of salt :
1) good teams give players just enough time on the pitch (to avoid injuries and fatigue)
2) the most non serious cricket

Even though pakistan has beaten WI (with all top playing best cricket); its the WI which took it so lightly

Practice games don't mean a thing. Why so many people going mad over it?

I know it's just a warm up game, but that was some sublime hitting by KL for his fifty. Was so good you could record the highlights just for his knock alone.

I've said this before, but KL at his peak makes even Kohli look like a lesser batsman. But he often plays within himself in the 3rd gear a lot of times in the IPL which makes it frustrating to watch when you know he has lot more higher gears than that.

India chased down 189 to beat England with an over to spare as bat dominated ball in Dubai.

Johnny Bairstow (49), Liam Livingstone (30) and Moeen Ali (43*) upped the pace in England’s first innings. Bairstow was dismissed just shy of his half-century by a blistering yorker from Jaspit Bumrah, but, after some fireworks from Livingstone, Ali smashed 21 off the final over to lift England to 188/5.

India lit up the powerplay in reply, with KL Rahul’s stunning 51 off 24 balls getting the chase off to a lightning start. Ishan Kishan top-scored in his role as opener with 70(46), and it was Rishabh Pant 29(14) and Hardik Pandya 16(10) who finished it off in style.

Five England bowlers went at more than 10-an-over, while Chis Jordan’s penultimate over leaked 23 runs with the match on the line.

That is because he plays the anchor role for his team Punjab. For india, he will be given the license to step up since Rohit and Kohli can anchor the innings and everyone else can accelerate around them

HOW THE TEAMS ARE TRACKING

India v Australia

India impressed in their warm-up match against England, winning by seven wickets with an over to spare. Nevertheless, they’ll be hoping to sharpen up with the ball after conceding a total of 188/5. With the bat, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan will both be out to back up their half-centuries.

Australia also won their warm-up match, but it was a nervier affair, beating New Zealand with three wickets to spare on the penultimate delivery. The Australians only used five bowlers in the match so may look to today’s encounter as a chance to test further options. Out for a duck against New Zealand, David Warner will be hoping to get back amongst the runs.

England v New Zealand

Having each tasted defeat in their opening warm-up match, both will be hoping for a win to set them on the right course for the tournament proper.

All three of the Black Caps top three managed to pass 30 against India; they’ll want one to kick on if they make a start this time around. Mitchell Santner will be looking to carry on where he left off after taking 3/22, but New Zealand will want their seamers to rein things in after an expensive outing against the Aussies.

There was plenty to like in England’s batting display against India with Jonny Bairstow (49 off 36) and Moeen Ali (44 off 20) both impressing. This time around they’ll want their top three to find their feet too. David Willey aside, all their bowlers will be hoping to produce better performances.

Afghanistan v West Indies

Afghanistan and West Indies will both be chasing win after going down in their opening warm-up matches.

Despite not playing Rashid Khan, Afghanistan impressed with the ball in their first warm-up match against South Africa, with Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/24) standing out. Things didn’t go so well with the bat as they were held to 104/8, with Mohammad Nabi the lone player to reach 20. They’ll be after a strong batting performance tonight.

West Indies will also be hoping for a better night with the bat after being held to 130/7 by Pakistan. Aside from a rapid 23 off 10 from Kieron Pollard, none of the West Indies’ batters really got going and they’ll want to find their groove before their opening match of the tournament against England.

Pakistan vs South Africa

Both Pakistan and South Africa enjoyed promising warm-up wins in their first tune-ups.

Pakistan will be wanting more of the same as they prepare for their blockbuster opening match against India. Babar Azam (50) and Fakhar Zaman (46*) both shone in Pakistan’ seven-wicket win over West Indies and the team will be hoping for more of the same. With the ball, things are looking good for Pakistan, four bowlers taking wickets against West Indies and finishing with double-digits for dot deliveries.

South Africa were clinical with the ball against Afghanistan and will be in good shape heading into the tournament if their attack can back that up tonight. Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller were all in the runs against and if Quinton de Kock follows suit tonight, they’ll be purring going into the Super 12.

Kohli wants to stay in the team now as alrounder!

In fact he gave up bowling because he became so supreme with bat! Otherwise he would have probably bowled as much as at least Tendulkar (Tendulkar in the beginning didn't had such a dream run in ODIs, so he did a lot of bowling, but he was definitely better than Kohli with the ball)

First time I had to scroll down to see the scoreboard for an India game from a certain cricket website.😂 IYKWIM

Just tuned in , I think our kits are brilliant, epecially without the sponsors logo plastered all over....
though i wish they had made the shade a tad lighter and the billion cheers sound wave a tad darker. But overall its wonderful.
on another front, i hope bhuvi has played his last game for us. I cant belive he is num 11 on t20 rankings.
I seriously belive there at least 3 bowlers in each nation better than him.
I hope he is not picked for our first match

Have to say Afghans openers will be a joy to watch if they both get into good form during tournament, both are savage with the bat.
