SRI LANKA AND BANGLADESH GO HEAD TO HEAD WITH ONE EYE ON ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP 2019

· The annual MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings update will be carried out on 1 May 2017

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will lock horns in a three-match ODI series starting in Dambulla on Saturday with either side sweeping the series not only consolidating its position on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings but also strengthening its chances of qualifying automatically for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Sixth-ranked Sri Lanka is on 98 points, while seventh-ranked Bangladesh is on 91 points – seven points behind.

A 3-0 win for Sri Lanka will help it gain two points and rise to 100, while Bangladesh will slip behind Pakistan on 88 points.

However, if the series result is reversed, then Bangladesh, which will aim to carry its P.Sara Stadium momentum into the ODI series, will join Sri Lanka on 96 points and be ranked in sixth place when the points are calculated beyond the decimal point.

West Indies and Pakistan will square-off in a four-match Twenty20 International series in Bridgetown on Sunday, but will be keeping a close eye on the ODI series in Sri Lanka as both are also in the danger zone. Pakistan is eighth on 89 points, while the West Indies is ninth on 84 points. The two sides will face each other in a three-match ODI series from 7-11 April in what could potentially also have a huge impact in qualification terms.

England and the seven other top teams on 30 September 2017 will qualify directly for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 with the remaining four teams getting a second chance through a 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifying tournament in 2018.

The annual MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings update will be carried out on 1 May 2017 in which results from 2013-14 will be dropped, while results from 2015-16 will be reduced to a weighting of 50 per cent.

Possible scenarios:

· Sri Lanka wins 3-0: Sri Lanka 100, Bangladesh 88
· Sri Lanka wins 2-1: Sri Lanka 99, Bangladesh 91
· Bangladesh wins 3-0: Bangladesh 96, Sri Lanka 96
· Bangladesh wins 2-1: Bangladesh 93, Sri Lanka 97

In the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for ODI Batsmen, Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim is top-ranked from either side in 19th position while opener Tamim Iqbal (23rd), Soumya Sarkar (30th rank) and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (31st) will be the others from the visiting side looking to improve their rankings.

In the absence of all-rounder Angelo Mathews, Kusal Mendis is the home side’s top-ranked batsman in 60th position while Niroshan Dickwella is one slot behind him.

Shakib is the leading bowler from either side in the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for ODI Bowlers in eighth position with his captain Mashrafe Mortaza (12th) and Mustafizur Rahman (30th) the other leading bowlers from the side. For Sri Lanka, Suranga Lakmal is the top-ranked bowler in 28th position.

The ODI team rankings, unlike the Test rankings, are updated after each match. The ICC ODI predictor function is available here.

What difference does it make to Pakistan's ranking points when results from 2013/2014 get dropped?

Pakistan will have a slight drop as they had a better win-loss ratio in that year compared to recent ones.

Also Srilanka too might be in danger of direct qualification as they had an impressive 2013-14 which will be erased and had an terrible 2016-17 period which will be given 100% weighting.

Bangladesh will have the advantage of deduction of horror record of 13-14 season :D

Yes you are right but still their bad period of 2016-17 will be given 100% rating and their golden period between 2015-16 will be reduced to 50% weighting.

Bad period? We only player 6 matches lost 3 won 3. Bad period is 2014 lol.

It doesn't matter either it was December or January as it is not a Gregorian calendar which starts from January, according to ICC the year starts from May 1 and ends on it.

Well if you are talking about cricket seasons then you are right

So even if SL win 2-1 and Pakistan beat WI 3-0 we are going to go above Bangladesh?

Slowly but surely making our way back up. Our Lankan bros need to win 3-0 or 2-1 for us.

Also with that,Srilanka will lose crucial points because of that 13-14 golden period being erased,so a number 6 spot could be just on our way.

We don't really deserve it, but will gladly take it.

There are still MASSIVE problems in our side and we will struggle to compete with AUS, IND, NZ, SA and ENG

Why don't we deserve it?
In my view number 6 is actually what we deserve, as we are weaker then Aus,NZ,Ind,RSA and Eng but are stronger then Srilanka and West Indies also we are close to Bangladesh but still better then them.

Exactly

Halwa Hain na 'pak wins 3-0 in wi and Sl wins 3-0' as some Pak ppers claiming??? LOL

There's a clear difference between Lanka and Windies. Windies' best players barely play international cricket. Windies got wrecked in the UAE on slow wickets and we'll get the same wickets in Windies. When Kraig Braithwaitte is your ODI opener, something is definitely wrong.

Sri Lanka, even though they lost 4-1, challenged AUS in pretty much every match that series. Bangladesh is an improving team, no doubt, but 3-0 against Lanka away is a bit too much.

no 3-0 is halwa

Mathew out. Kusal Perera out for at least first 2 ODIs (Left Hamstring), DIckwalla out first match (ICC suspension I think)

How is Pakistan better than Srilanka or Bangladesh?

Truth is Pakistan haven't done too well in ODIs.

Same way I can say i can't state that bangladesh is better than Lanka. Only performance on the field matters.

We beat Sri Lanka under Azhar's captaincy in Sri Lanka LOL. Let's see if Bangladesh with there best side can match what one of Pakistans worst teams/captain did.

Exciting battle for WC qualification. I think many Pakistani fans are embarassed but personally, I hope that the players take this as a challenge and opportunity to prove themselves as a relatively younger team with a young captain in charge.

I reckon it will be really close between Pak, WI & Bangladesh. I think Windies are the most likely to be knocked out! That's why this upcoming 3-ODI series is so important for both Pakistan & West Indies.

I'm still saddened to see that our selection process has gone backwards and picked up Kamran Akmal for this tour. Pretty pathetic overall decision. I can excuse Inzi for doing this as he is relatively new, but where were the minds of those members on the panel who selected Kamran for a comeback in 2012, 2014 & 2016 WT20 and saw him fail spectacularly, mostly making binary scores in important games?

Shoaib Malik & M Hafeez are similarly dissapointing selection -- with the same criteria that these guys were included as supposed senior players in the previous two editions of the T20 WC and both failed pretty badly (though Hafeez might've had one of his customary good innings per tour).

Well, with the 2013/14 results being dropped come May 1st, we may see a lot of surprises...

Hope we don't drop any further.

What does it mean 2013-2014 will not be counted? So, when will the refreshed ODI rankings will be published, and what years(Month, Year) it will take into account? Can we assume 01 May 2014-01 May 2017?
