ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Group 2 - Points table, scenarios discussion

Zim have it easier than SA as they have 3 matches against IND, BANG and NED and need to win 2.

SA have 3 matches against IND, PAk n NED and need to win 2. If both ZIM and SA win 2 each they will be on same points and SA may go through based on NRR.

IND is best placed with 3 matches against SA, BANG, ZIM. India is expected to win against BANG and ZIM making them table toppers.

PAK has 3 matches against NED, BANG and SA. Even ifthey win 3 matches they would hope India wins against SA and ZIM whiel ZIm loses against one of teh weaker sides while Pak defeats SA.

Super 12s:

Team with greater nrr will place first if teams are tied on points

If several teams finish with the same points & nrr, team with the most victories will place higher

When all other factors are equal, team with fewer losses will place higher

After today fixtures are:

NED v ZIM
BD v IND
PAK v SA
NED v SA
BD v PAK
IND v ZIM

Very simple equation

Bangladesh beats india as they did in 2007 & knocks them out of workd cup as they will finish on 6 points ( after zimbabwe win)

Pakistan beats south africa
And south africa beats Holland

Pak 6 points
South africa 7 points
Zimbabwe 5 points
India 6 points
Bangla 6 points

NRR will come into picture

So Bangladesh v India is a crucial game

Just to add there is also a washout possibility between India v Bangladesh as high showers are expected between 7-9 pm ( match time,)

Pakistan not out of the tournament yet but South Africa still have Netherlands to play & India have Bangladesh and Zimbabwe to play.

Pakistan can reach 6 points maximum.

South Africa only need 1 win to reach 7 points

1 win and a rained off match for India will see them reach 7 points too

Realistically Pakistan is out of contention and rightfully so. The manner in which the team bottled the match against India and then Zimbabwe on the biggest of stages, it didn't deserve to go through at all.

Not out yet if india lose to Bangladesh and beat Zim it’ll come down to nrr if pak wins out

Ppers who still believe we can make it are probably in LalaLand
Crux is that we are done in 3 games literally just 60% of our games and we failed miserably amid all the chest thumping and haa-hha-kar we've failed miserably

I don't see Pakistan beating South Africa. We expected too much from this team

Pakistan should rest shaheen , babar , rizwan and shadab in the next matches. We are out anyway.

if India lose to Bangladesh, their fate will liie in the hands of Pakistan through the Pak-Bang game. A reversal of the scenario today.

Pakistan is out of the tournament anyway , time to give benched players a couple of matches.

My team for our next match

Fakhar(c)
Haider
Iftikhar
Asif(wk)
Khushdil
Nawaz
Waseem
Qadir
Husnain
Naseem
Dahani

If Ind lose to Bang and Ind-Zim is washed out, Pakistan can go through if they win their games.

No chance Bangladesh can win that game. Pakistan been the worst side in the competition without doubt.

Realistically we are out.

Unrealistically either:
Netherlands needs to beat SA and we win remaining games

Or have us, India and Bangladesh all on 6 points to get NRR in to play.

If the 2nd scenario miraculously happens I will be gutted they didnt thrash Netherlands today and chase the total quicker.

Overall, we don’t deserve the semis.

We seem to be heading home after the first round and deservingly so.... But wait for the next dressing room inspirational speech by Bobby Bradman while he himself is struggling to buy a run. Or pictures of boys donning cheap flashy clothing while they are out and about on a paid vacation to Australia.

0%

Adelaide weather shows partly cloudy that day with 0% chance of rain.

Thanks!
Tbh, we don't deserve it anyway. What's the point of qualifying if you have to rely on rains and x team beating y, and y beating z. We need a complete retrospection and massive changes in management and our long time approach to play shorter formats of the game.

SA and Ind are clearly more deserving of entering the Semis, and rightfully so..

India will beat Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and go through with 8 points.

South Africa will top the group with 9 points by winning against Pak and Netherlands.

Unless of course rain intervenes and changes this equation completely.

The worst 15 in Pakistan history these boys. And seem proud of it.

After three rounds of matches the qualification stakes in Group 2 are beginning to take shape, with South Africa in pole position and Pakistan still in a heap of trouble.

But it’s still all to play for as the teams battle for a spot in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals. We take a look at the state of play as things stand

Who’s in the driving seat to reach the semi-finals?

South Africa’s win over India means they jump into top spot in the group on five points.

India and Bangladesh are hot on their heels, both on four points.

A net run rate of +0.844 gives India the edge between those two sides, but Wednesday’s India v Bangladesh fixture now looks even more pivotal.

Zimbabwe’s stunning win over Pakistan had given them a chance, but their dramatic loss to Bangladesh means it will take something remarkable for them to finish in the top two from here.

South Africa’s Net RR of +2.772, created by the crushing 104-run win over Bangladesh, means they are now clear favourites to qualify in the group.

Can Pakistan still make it?

Two defeats, both coming on the final ball of matches against India and Zimbabwe, have left Pakistan needing something special to make it to the semi-finals.

And their hopes have taken another blow thanks to India’s defeat against South Africa – a result that complicates the qualification permutations for Babar Azam’s side.

If Pakistan beat South Africa on 3 November and Bangladesh on 6 November, they will have amassed six points.

But it is completely out of Pakistan’s own hands and looking increasingly unlikely that six points will be enough, although not mathematically impossible.

Sunday’s win for South Africa means that even if Pakistan beat the Proteas in their next match, it will not be enough to see them leapfrog Temba Bavuma’s side.

Net run rate could yet be a factor, so a big margin of victory in at least one of the remaining games wouldn’t hurt.

Key Upcoming Matches

India v Bangladesh – 2 November

This is the fixture that could turn Group 2 on its head. A win for Bangladesh would blow the group wide open, putting them two points clear of India with just one game to play and potentially opening a path for India’s semi-final spot to be snatched from them in the last round of matches. Should India win, then they will have more than a foot in the semi-finals, with Zimbabwe awaiting them in Sunday’s fifth and final group game.

Pakistan v South Africa – 3 November

Depending on the results in the matches before them, Pakistan’s meeting with South Africa in Sydney could be enormous for both sides. It's a huge clash between two of the better teams in the world even without the context of qualification being at stake.

Remaining Group 2 Fixtures

2 November: Zimbabwe v Netherlands, Adelaide Oval

2 November: India v Bangladesh, Adelaide Oval

3 November: Pakistan v South Africa, SCG, Sydney

6 November: South Africa v Netherlands, Adelaide Oval

Pakistan's biggest problem now is that qualifying is out of their own hands and even if they win both their remaining group matches they are not guaranteed to go through.

Relying on others results is always fraught with danger.

They are not the worst 15 imo. Do you remember what teams they had in the previous editions? Shocking lack of talent the pre-Babar era saw.

I think they underachieved in this tournament.

That’s not foreign to our team though. We have scraped through like that in 1992 and other times too lol.

If Bangladesh somehow manages to beat India and Pakistan lose to South Africa, how do you think Pakistan will play it in the final game against Bangladesh?

I think Pak will play with a weaker side, probably 4 changes, no front line pacers etc. and will deff play with no intent and below par, resulting in a Bangladesh victory and therefore eliminated India in the process.

That would be good for Bangla cricket as they have been criticised a lot recently

I think it's best for the PCB and the team to move on. Rest Babar, Rizwan and give others in the team a go.

This big win takes NRR out of the equation probably.

So Pakistan must beat Bangladesh AND ((SA lose to NED) OR (IND lose to ZIM))

If both SA and Ind win, they will be top 2 on points table regardless of Bangla match result

SA should take no risks with weather

Get 160 on the board in 14 overs

Declare and just get the NL to bat as soon as possible. They won’t score more than 80 against SA

Its funny how this poor batting Pakistan team would had topped the table and been termed the best team in the group had they beaten Zimbabwe, the team they had no chance to lose before the game started.

I almost want Pakistan to go through.

I am expecting nothing from Babar and Rizwan but perhaps the middle order can win us the World Cup.

Lol. Today is the first day I can remember where we have got a proper above par score after those 2 have failed. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And in terms of your opening comment- don't you support Pakistan?!

This! Fickle fans basically.
See it what it's for, we have been good this tournament - bar the choke Vs Zimbabwe which is punishable by elimination

We haven’t been good enough or we wouldn’t have choked against Zimbabwe, which is unforgivable.

This was such a great result for Indian fans. If Ind wins against Zimbos and NZ wins against Ireland, India doesn't have to face NZ, our bogey team in the semis.

Zimbabwe to beat India, says my gut feeling.

SA nr 1 and Pak nr 2 to advance to the semi final.

how long since india won a icc tourney?
you have more then just one bogey team.

On the other hand Pak blew another chance. Happened in WC 2019, last year SF vs Aus and here they reallt topped it off. how on earth they lost the first 2 games!

The qualification permutations in Group 2 are beginning to take shape as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 rapidly approaches its knockout stage.

Pakistan registered a comprehensive win over South Africa in Sydney and kept themselves afloat in the running for a semi-final spot. The result also ensures that it's all to play for in the final round of Group 2 games. We take a look at the state of play as things stand.

Who’s in the driving seat to reach the semi-finals?

India’s narrow and nail-biting win over Bangladesh has sent them to the top with six points from four games and now placed comfortably to top the group should they beat Zimbabwe in their final match. On the flip side, they could still be caught if they are beaten by Zimbabwe in their final match.

South Africa had a chance to officially confirm their spot in the top two with a win over Pakistan on Thursday, but they fell well short of the DLS target and will have to win their final game against the Netherlands to seal a semi-final berth. However, should the Netherlands pull off an upset, it will open the door for either Pakistan or Bangladesh, who face off in the second game on Sunday, to win and book a spot in the final four.

How can Pakistan still make it?

The chances of a Pakistan appearance in the semi-finals will depend on other results. Should Netherlands or Zimbabwe register a win against South Africa or India respectively, Babar Azam's men will be in with a chance. But first and foremost, they will have to win their game against Bangladesh.

If the Netherlands manage to beat the Proteas, a win over Bangladesh will see Pakistan leapfrog South Africa to six points while Bavuma's men will remain on five. If Zimbabwe defeat India, Pakistan could be level on points with India. Given both teams would then have the same number of wins, the deciding factor will be the net run rate, which is where Pakistan (+1.117) currently hold an edge over India (+0.730).

If both the results from the other matches go Pakistan's way, Babar Azam's men could even top Group 2, something that seemed extremely unlikely when they lost their opening two matches to India and Zimbabwe.

But as things stand, both India and South Africa have their fates in their own hands. Win their respective matches and they are through to the semis.

A missed opportunity for Zimbabwe

Netherlands' win over Zimbabwe on Wednesday has effectively ruled them out of contention for an unlikely top two finish.

Had Sikandar Raza inspired his team to victory over the Dutch – and he did his best with limited assistance – then there could have been a chance for Zimbabwe to spring one of the biggest surprises in the history of the tournament.

All the T20 World Cup Fixtures

Adelaide weather looks great for SA-Netherlands and BD-PAK games.

So, washout seems unlikely.

South Africa just have to beat Netherlands to go to semi.

NZ beat India in the 2019 WC SF. They crashed India out in the 2021 WC. They defeated India in the test championship final. That's a bogey team when you keep losing to one team in crunch matches. As far as others go, India won and lost against the Aussies in the knockouts last decade. The English are a challenge ofcourse but there are holes in that batting and bowling line up just as India does.

Pakistan beats big teams which beat India like NZ last year, SA this year, yet loses or nearly loses to minnows, truly a strange team, and has always been such.
