ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Round 1 Matches discussion

Such a lame tactic opening bowling with medium pacer Mayers when you've got Holder, Joseph and McCoy.

Zimbabwe look transformed under their new coach Dave Houghton. Their previous coach Lalchand Rajput seemed to have mentally checked out towards the end.

Good to see them adopt a positive approach.

Zimbabwe might seriously test Pakistan if they're in our group :))

The last time we faced them in a World Cup, we scraped past them by like 20 runs.

106 runs are needed from 90 balls. 8 wickets in hand.

This is Zimbabwe's game to lose now.

They’ve done quite a lot of damage in the power play

Both sides actually

Zimbabwe are in trouble now. Sikandar should've taken his time.

77/5 (9.5 overs).

77 runs are needed from 61 balls.

Burl has way more heart and intent than Khushdil

Keep fighting Burl!

6 down.

If Zimbabwe lose this, then the remaining matches are virtual quarter finals from this group.

Curtis Campher and George Dockrell combined for a 119-run partnership to guide Ireland to an unlikely six-wicket victory over Scotland in Hobart on Wednesday.

Dynamic duo get the job done for Ireland

Curtis Campher and George Dockrell may not yet have the accolades that Batman and Robin collected over the years, but the pair worked superbly in tandem to successfully guide Ireland’s run chase home.

The duo came to the crease with their side in a spot of bother at 61/4 and needing to score at greater than 10 runs per over to claim an unlikely victory.

But Campher (72* off 32 deliveries) and Dockrell (39* off 27) kept their cool, running hard between the wickets, finding the gap when required and even clearing the fence with some massive hitting to help Ireland to their first victory of the tournament.

Their 119-run stand was achieved from just 57 deliveries, with Campher – who was also the pick of the Ireland bowlers with figures of 2/9 - hitting a trio of consecutive boundaries from the penultimate over to clinch a famous triumph for the European side.

Records fall for Ireland during run chase

While Campher's innings was his best so far of his T20I career, it was also the highest of any Ireland player in the history of the T20 World Cup.

But that was just the beginning of a host of records that fell on a memorable day for Ireland.

The run chase was Ireland's highest ever successful run chase in T20I cricket and Campher and Dockrell’s stand of 119 was the highest ever partnership by Ireland in T20 World Cup history.

It also comes in as the third highest T20I partnership ever for Ireland and one would expect the Guinness to be flowing deep into the night in Hobart.

Jones' masterclass not enough for brave Scots

Michael Jones' scintillating knock earlier in the day seemed distant after Ireland's memorable run chase, but the Scotland opener batted beautifully to help his side post a competitive total of 176/5.

The right-hander hit six fours and four sixes during an entertaining knock of 86 from just 55 deliveries as Scotland posted the then biggest score of the tournament at the time in perfect batting conditions at Bellerive Oval.

Jones found the middle of the bat throughout his innings, as the right-hander overcame the early loss of fellow opener George Munsey (1) to have valuable partnerships with Matthew Cross (28) and skipper Richie Berrington (37).

But it was all in vain as Campher and Dockrell combined to provide Ireland with one of their best wins of their cricketing journey.

Zimbabwe made a mess of this chase.

Should've been a straightforward chase after the strong start they got.

Zim - 90/6 (12.4 overs).

62 runs are needed from 40 balls. 4 wickets in hand.

Burl is the last hope for Zimbabwe probably.

Zimbabwe should try to reduce the defeat margin.

Last 2 games should be knockouts. But, if rain washes out the games, NRR should be a factor.

Jongwe is hitting well.

39 runs are needed from 21 balls.

Zimbabwe - 115/8 (16.3 overs).

Rain is a possibility on Friday.

As per Cricinfo, if both games get washed out, Zimbabwe and Scotland are through. West Indies and Ireland are eliminated then.

Merc brigade have retired now. These are their regulars who've been playing for a while.

They remain comically poor against spin, but Powell is a good hitter of pace and is getting them to a competitive total here.

Yeah i know. I have watched these guys but still they will pick those leagues ahead of playing international cricket and these guys are not that good. They can't play competitively against other top teams.

Friday might be a washout day

That means West Indies and Ireland will go home

West Indies set a target of 154 for Zimbabwe to chase down and then bowled them out for 122 to sneak in a crucial win in their T20 World Cup encounter at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

Sikandar Raza show all over again

West Indies started well despite losing Kyle Mayers early, with Johnson Charles and Evin Lewis establishing a vital stand. The introduction of spin though caused much damage, with a flurry of wickets then going down.

Sikandar Raza did the bulk of the damage, ending with figures of 3/19 in his four overs. He broke the stand between Lewis and Charles, with the wicket of the opener. Charles also departed for 45 after a mix-up with Rovman Powell, leading to a run-out.

West Indies were struggling at 101/6, but a late flourish from Powell and Akeal Hosein allowed them to post a score of 153/7. Powell made 28, while Hosein was unbeaten on 23.

Zimbabwe skipper absent

Earlier, in a must-win encounter, West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran called it right at the toss and opted to bat first. The West Indies made one forced change, with Johnson Charles coming in for Brandon King in the batting order.

Zimbabwe were also been forced into a change, with skipper Craig Ervine missing the contest due to an illness. Regis Chakabva captains the side in his absence, with Tony Munyonga replacing him in the side.

West Indies fight after fabulous start from Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe started off optimistically, knocking off 18 runs in the first over by Kyle Mayers and 11 runs in the next by Akeal Hosein. The introduction of Alzarri Joseph reaped rewards for the West Indies as the tall quick picked up two wickets in his first two overs.

Obed McCoy added another in the last over of the Powerplay and Zimbabwe were suddenly in a spot of bother. Raza came out all guns blazing, smashing a six early in his innings but a wild heave off Odean Smith shortly after forced him to take a long walk back.

Akeal Hosein sent back Milton Shumba while the dangerous Ryan Burl was trapped in front by Jason Holder to dent Zimbabwe further. A late fight back from Luke Jongwe was put to an end by Alzarri Joseph, who picked up 4/16, each of his dismissals splattering the stumps.

The net run rate factor

The late burst from Jongwe, where he hit 17 runs off one Odean Smith over, allowed Zimbabwe to get closer to the West Indies target even if they lost. In a group where net run rate will likely become a factor later on, Scotland and Zimbabwe are in the top two with West Indies and Ireland following them. All four teams have two points apiece.

Seems like the West Indies - Ireland game would definitely take place but Scotland - Zimbabwe might be washed out.

That would mean Scotland will go through along with the winner of West Indies - Ireland.

Hard to believe that Nissanka is the best Sri Lanka have.

Did I just see a Netherland bowler bowl 144k's or am I tripping?

Guess I wasn't. Hits the stumps in the next over with a 146k yorker. Next delivery is a 145 LBW.

Well, alrighty then. Netherlands were pretty decent in the ODI series too. There's some decent talent there and could be a real threat in a few years.

Runs on board will be difficult for nederlands. Hopefully they restrict them under 130.

Crazy how many poor mistimed aerial shots Sri Lanka have played that are just over the heads of fielders or just fallen short of it.

I believe sl has the bowling to defend this score. Group 2, second Asia Cup coming up

If Netherlands lose this, they are 99 % out. Unless UAE upsets Namibia. Which I don't think will happen.

The battle is now for who goes in which group between Namibia and Sri Lanka.

NRR :-

Namibia 1.2
SL 0.6(will change by the end of this match)

SL 162/6 (20)

NED 146/9 (20)

Sri Lanka won by 16 runs

SL Are through to Super 12s

Kusal Mendis' classy half-century helped Sri Lanka in registering a 16-run win in their cut-throat ICC Men's T20 World Cup clash against the Netherlands in Geelong on Thursday. The Island nation also confirmed their berth in the Super 12 phase as a result of this victory.

The pint-sized opener smashed 79 from 44 balls to help pace Sri Lanka as the island nation posted 162/6 in ideal batting conditions at Kardinia Park.

It was slow going at first for Sri Lanka in their must-win clash, with the Netherlands' underrated bowling line-up restricting the Asian side to just 60 runs from the first 10 overs.

But Mendis and Charith Asalanka (31) pressed the accelerator from that point on as Sri Lanka upped the run rate to set the Netherlands a difficult run chase.

Pacer Paul van Meekeren (2/25) was the pick of the bowlers for the Netherlands, while veteran spinner Roelof van der Merwe (0/16) limped from the field late in the innings with what appeared to be an injury.

Max O'Dowd Keeps fighting until the end

The Dutch never got going in their chase. They lost their first three wickets for just 47 runs and then kept losing more at regular intervals. But opening batter Max O'Dowd hanged around and tried his best to get Netherlands as close to the target as possible.

O'Dowd remained unbeaten on 71 from 53 deliveries, an innings consisting of six fours and three sixes, as Netherlands reached 146/9 in their full quota of overs.

Roelof van der Merwe battles through pain

Spin-bowling all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe was seen limping off the field in pain during the first innings of the match. He didn't take the field after that and didn't walk in to bat at his usual position either.

But Van der Merwe battled through pain and walked in to bat as Netherland's last wicket in the 18th over of the Dutch innings to reduce the deficit of the loss as much as possible. His brave decision helped his team a lot as he added 23 runs for the last wicket along with O'Dowd.

Netherlands' chances of qualification to the Super 12 will now depend on the result of the match between Namibia and UAE. Only a UAE win can help them in qualifying for the next stage.

Weather looks fine at least for the first game. WI win the first game and they will top the group.

Oh boy

Group of death

Mortal Kombat

If my guess is right, WI will join Group B.

WI NRR is worse than Zimbabwe and If zim beat Scotland even by 30 runs or within 18 overs They would top the table Assuming WI won't beat Ireland by a big margin (like by 50 runs or within 16 overs) as Ireland are also in good form. At best WI can just edge them out if they play good cricket.

Now hope UAE beat Namibia and let SL join Group B aswell. We don't want to be in a group of death. 😅

UAE - 77/1 in 13 overs
Need 65-70 more to set a winning total.

That Aravind guy has played one of the worst inning in T20 cricket. How can any opener be striking at 65 even after facing 30+ balls in T20 cricket?!!!!

So if UAE win now, then SL tops the group and avoids Pakistan's group.

WI have a negative NRR and Scotland have a positive one. If both win their games normally WI might finish second on the table and therefore avoid Pakistan's group as well.

Done and dusted . Namibia messed up their chances big time they beat strong Lankan team and end up losing to Dutch and UAE. Srilanka will go to group A
