Williamson to lead experienced squad to ICC T20 World Cup

Kane Williamson will lead a BLACKCAPS squad with a wealth of tournament experience to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, starting in the West Indies and United States of America in June.

The squad led by Williamson was revealed today by BLACKCAPS selector Sam Wells at an event held at the ANZ Centre in Auckland.

This is Williamson’s sixth appearance in a T20 World Cup squad and his fourth tournament as captain. His experience is bettered only by Tim Southee, who has earned selection in his seventh T20 World Cup squad and currently sits as the leading wicket taker in the history of T20 Internationals.

Further to the experience offered by Williamson and Southee, Trent Boult has been selected in his fifth T20 World Cup squad. The squad also boasts significant recent experience in the conditions with 13 of the 15-man group featuring on the team’s last tour to the West Indies in 2022.

As well as that, six of the squad have also featured in the Caribbean Premier League T20 competition.

Bowler Matt Henry and batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra are the only two members of the 15 without ICC T20 World Cup experience. Alongside the 15 players selected in the tournament squad, pace bowler Ben Sears will travel and train with the team as injury cover.

Adam Milne was ruled out following surgery to repair an ankle injury, and Kyle Jamieson was also unavailable for selection as he continues to rehabilitate his back injury.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead said naming a squad for a pinnacle event was always an exciting time.
"I'd like to congratulate everyone named today. It’s a special time representing your country at a world tournament. We expect the venues in the West Indies to offer quite varied conditions and feel we’ve selected a squad with the scope to adapt to those conditions.”

Stead said he was delighted to name two players for an ICC T20 World Cup the first time, in Henry and Ravindra.

"Matt has worked exceptionally hard on his skills across the phases of a T20 game to come back into selection consideration," he said.

“Rachin has made every post a winner in the past 12 months and it was exciting to see him continue that trajectory over the summer in the T20 format against Australia.”

Stead will lead a support staff group featuring batting coach Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram as bowling coach, while James Foster will act as assistant coach for the group with a focus on fielding. Oram featured as a player the last time the men’s tournament was held in the West Indies, and he was also part of the WHITE FERNS coaching group the last time the women’s edition was held in the Caribbean.

The New Zealand based members of the squad and support staff will leave for the tournament on the 23rd of May.

Kane himself doesn’t deserve a spot in the lineup. He is worse than Rahane as a T20 player.

A pretty good team that can reach finals.

Yes but he's a specialist captain and adjust accordingly.

As a captain he warrants it

Bracewell, Conway, KW are all liabilities in this format. Not to mention aged trundlers like Boult and Southee .

No chance of winning this . Just like they had no chance of winning the 2023 World Cup.

They did? They suffered injuries at inconvenient times which caused them to lose.

At full power They only lost to India lol which was the only team stronger then they were.

They got destroyed by South Africa in the group stage.

Anyway, this team will make semis and that's about it.

They need to be braver in their selections and select a couple of their youngsters who are better options.

Only two players were included from the team that thrashed Pakistan recently. This tells a lot about Pakistan, doesn’t it? And people here believed Saim Ayub, Usman Khan, Mohammad Aamir and Imas Wasim were some kind of saviors. They even couldnt perform against this NZ C team.

Bracewell can be their best spinner. He will trouble on those pitches.

Boult and Southee with their cutters as well

SA while batting first Is next to invincible. They murdered Australia in the series prior.

Whole chasing for some reason they become minnows, and this has been a consistent trend since 2013. Idk why this is the case or how? But for some reason since 11 years SA functions like this.

Batting first they hardly if ever lose constantly bazzballing to 400 but in knockout stages their all poor while batting first.

Honestly I think in SA case it's just mentality, their players and coaching staff just shifts off in knockouts or while chasing to the point Nedtherlands is a daunting task for them

Agree about SA. Also, their quota selections won't help. There's a huge gap in skills , especially batsmen , between their white players and their coloured/black players .

But NZ can make those changes but are simply too conservative . Having Conway, Williamson in the top 4 is actually worse than having Bobby and Rizwan.

Bracewell is a better bowler than both those in the format. He makes it in the team as a spinner alone.

NZ don't need someone who bats at #6 to be a better spinner. They need a hitter there. And he strikes at 125. That is poor. Unless Bracewell is batting at #8, it makes no sense.

It seems like they’ve made amends with Boult.

Southee and Boult are still their best bowlers and I think even without a yard of pace their experience will help on those slow pitches and if anybody gets some movement, you know Boult will upfront

They have to transition. I saw both Boult and Southee bowl live in the stadium on a flat pitch and they looked helpless

Caribbean pitches need not always be slow. When England toured last December , there was a 250 pitch at Tarouba and another 200 + one.

I kinda disagree. You need anchorers in t20 to stabilise, ots just Australia have Marsh who has a 4th and 5th gear.

But blaslitic openers won't always perform, if wickets fall down you need some stabilisation. They have the right idea with finn Allen at opening.

Williamson happily shifts down the order if Allen is off to a flier.

Australia does this as well, If head and Warner are off to a flier maxwell will get promoted early but otherwise Marsh will be no 3 if wanrer and head aren't off to a race track.

Problem qith babar and rizwan is the ego of opening or batting in the top 3. They won't shift or play for the team. I'm happy to have babar and rizwan play and anchorer if wickets have fallen down, we don't need these 2 morons if someone like haris, Fakhar, usman or any attacking player actually plays a blist fire irrespective of form

A pretty strong squad with the skipper being the only weak link. Guptill/Munro would have been more suitable on flat US pitches.

Is that in the IPL? you’re seeing high scoring across the board there and I wont use that as the template for what to expect in the tournament, plus Kiwis always punch above their weight.

They will defo find more assistance from the pitches in the World Cup and will need to use more variation on any flat mambas

New Zealand has been incredibly consistent in terms of team selection.

I really am looking forward to support Aus and NZ this cup.

Although Australia still my main

Just 2 changes from their last world cup squad. This is incredible. But I don't think they are going to win this one again. Better teams out there who can win.

NZ is always a mid tier team. For them team gelling is very very vital to punch above the weight. So they have a structure that they don't really change much. That won't win them tournaments. But it will get them to semi finals.

This. It'll never win them tournaments. In the past , they didn't have the players.

But this time, they've consciously made that decision by ignoring Seifert, Robinson and Josh Clarkson.

Kane is in yey ! Another WC loss for NZ. He's the worst tuk tuk player going around. Kohli is a tuk tuk t20 player and I believe he doesnt deserve a place in Ind t20 team but b/w him & Kane , I will still pick Kohli any day. That just shows how horrible a T20 player Kane is. And Conaway joining him at the top LOL! NZ following Ind and Pak in the T20WC exit. None of these 3 teams deserve to be in the SF;s for their tuk tuk approach. And all this talk about slow Carribbean pitches. Klrahul kohli speak of pitch was gripping assessing conditions nonsense deserves to be thrown out. Aus Eng SA WI deserve to be in the SF's..

:ROFLMAO:

Again, this can't happen. England , SA and WI will be in the same group , along with PAK. Only 2 of them can go through to semis.

Just saw how they structured it. Unless there's a big upset - super 8 stage - Group 1 will have ind aus wi ban/sl. Group 2 will have -Pak eng nz sa. Top 2 teams in each group qualify for SF. So it'll be ind/wi & aus from group 1. And eng sa from group 2 most probably. So wi aus eng sa - can be in the SF. Is my assumption correct or did I miss something?

Man this grouping is so convoluted- such twisted calculations lol ! 😂

Just realised that Ive been getting wrong forvthe past 2 weeks. You are right.

Unless of course both NZ and Afghans qualify. In which case , NZ will be in India's group. If Afghans are out , WI will end up in our group and NZ in PAK's group.

I was under the impression that NZ are seeded. Afghans have been seeded but not NZ. Like wth :ROFLMAO:

They got good practice in IPL...

Whole New Zealand team were woeful
In the field, yes. But like I mentioned when the squad was announced, Conway, KW and Bracewell are going to be liabilities.

Conway was a huge liability behind the stumps let alone in front of them. Missed a couple that went to the boundary , missed a run out etc.

These guys are done it seems. This is bad news for Pakistan, they won’t get their free ticket to the Final with NZ Being knocked out before the super 8

The good news for this version of Pakistan fans is that they can use NZ’s early exit from the World Cup to justify Babar is still a good captain because Kane Williamson and a strong NZ side also didn’t make it.

Tbf, Williamson is now giving me 2011 pointing flashbacks. His career is over after this. He should take a coaching or sit on the NZ board though.

I have massive massive respect for Williamson, he's the greatest captain to never win a world cup but his time is over now.

This nz team is out of practise and their all playing as if they have never held a bat before.

It's what happened when England in 2023 decided its a good idea to bring bairstow, Stokes and Root back even though they hadn't played for 4 years and were a gone case.

England learned their lesson, I think NZ will learn it too, they have a massive 2nd string pool ready to develop

IPL practice has backfired for them LOL.
They didn’t even get practice lol

All of their main players were either injured, on the bench or were not even playing.

-Ravindra lost his spot in the team
-Kane was on the bench for GT
-Phillips on the bench for SRH
-Santner on the bench for CSK
-Conway injured
-Allen unpicked, was on holiday for the past 2-3 months
-Chapman unpicked

The only guys who got some game time were Mitchell, Boult and Furgouson

Well, they should have played series then instead of warming the bench in IPL.

Crashed out already.

What happened — Change needed?

New Zealand finish outside the ICC T20 World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2014.
