Sri Lankan cricket may be bracing for yet another bout of soul-searching, but the immediate business remains unfinished in Colombo and Pallekele. New Zealand’s dismantling of the hosts on Wednesday night turned the crowd against their own team, and now the Black Caps return to Khetterama eyeing a semi-final berth — their fourth in the last five T20 World Cups — against an England side already assured of progression.

Pakistan, meanwhile, watch nervously from the sidelines. Their rain-ruined clash with New Zealand left them banking on England to complete a perfect Super Eight run and then hoping to overturn Sri Lanka with a hefty margin — roughly 70 runs across both games if the first-innings benchmark is 180 — to sneak through on net run rate.

England’s campaign has been a masterclass in “winning ugly.” Their two-wicket scramble past Pakistan, which sealed qualification, was so chaotic it could pass for modern art. The hunt for a flawless performance continues, though there’s little danger of them peaking prematurely. The one blemish remains Jos Buttler’s barren run: four single-digit scores in succession, capped by a haunted expression after his latest dismissal. Yet England show no inclination to sideline their most decorated white-ball batter.

For New Zealand, the stakes are higher. Even a narrow defeat might suffice, but victory would underline their reputation as a tournament machine. After the stumble at the 2024 World Cup, where Afghanistan edged them out early, they have rediscovered their rhythm. Despite injuries and the loss of Michael Bracewell before a ball was bowled, they’ve won four of five completed matches, with replacement Cole McConchie starring in the comeback against Sri Lanka. Their depth in spin — five options compared to England’s four, assuming Jacob Bethell’s hand cut has healed — proved decisive there and could again.

Few would be shocked if they finish the job. A win would secure top spot in the group and settle semi-final logistics, locking Mumbai and Kolkata as venues. Pakistan, however, will be praying the script doesn’t run so smoothly.

England Squad: Philip Salt, Jos Buttler(w), Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook(c), Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Ben Duckett, Luke Wood, Josh Tongue, Rehan Ahmed

New Zealand Squad: Tim Seifert(w), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner(c), Cole McConchie, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson, James Neesham, Jacob Duffy, Kyle Jamieson, Devon Conway

England consider spinner Ahmed for Colombo turner

England will consider bringing in leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed for the T20 World Cup Super 8s match against New Zealand in Colombo.

England, who are already through to the semi-finals, will wait for another look at the pitch on Friday before naming their XI.

The match will be played on the same surface as New Zealand beat Sri Lanka on Wednesday, when 10 of the 15 wickets fell to spin, and England are keen to cover all options.

Bowling coach Tim Southee said he expects a "pretty scrappy" wicket.

"We've seen spin play such a big part here," Southee said.

"It's such a big ground. That doesn't mean seamers can't still have an impact - like [New Zealand seamer] Matt Henry last night."

Ahmed, 21, has been a regular around England squads but has not played a T20 since the tour of Ireland last September, nor has he featured at a World Cup.

He played in the three one-day internationals against Sri Lanka last month, also held on this ground, and twice filled in as an opener.

The leg-spinner would likely replace a pace bowler if he is selected - possibly Jamie Overton.

New Zealand picked only two pace bowlers in their win over Sri Lanka, in which 30 of the 40 overs were bowled by spinners.

England would still have Jofra Archer and Sam Curran as pace bowlers, plus Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson and Will Jacks.

Jacob Bethell is yet to bowl in the tournament because of a cut on his finger. His availability to bowl would also impact England's thinking.

Third consecutive day of supporting Pakistan! Vicariously though SL first, and now England. But I feel NZ will be too strong for England, 75% in favour of them to win.

England lead New Zealand in T20I Head-to-Heads, with 16 wins, 10 defeats, and a tie (won by England on a Super Over).

At T20 World Cups, England have won four of seven, including their last encounter, at Brisbane in 2022.

It is also about team matchups

New Zealand are comfortable against most teams but they have issues against both Australia and England in World Cups.

ENgland is likely to lose the game and take on SA at Eden Gardens. Assuming if India goes through they will face India at wankhede . It is a cauldron. Can be intimidating for opposition

New Zealand is playing great cricket TBH. I think they will win this game and will also end the journey of Pakistan today. Not like Pakistan deserves to go to semis anyway...

Pakistani first suppoted Lanka to win against England- failed
2nd time Pakistani supported Pakistan vs England - Failed
3rd time supported NZ again Lanka - Failed
4th time supported westindies over South Africa - Failed
5th time Supported Zimbabwe over india - Failed .

Honestly now Pakistan should support NZ over England so things might change for them.

:kp

Should be a good game.

It is a dead rubber for England as they have already qualified for the semi.

Bechare 🤣

Our future is already written.

After this WC, Salman agha to be replaced by shadab khan as captain as per reports
Babar and fakhar will be rested only to be back just before next WT20

Inclusion of some youngsters again meaningless and useless T20 series.

Perfectly orchestrated by Hesson & clowns behind him.

Will England rest some players? This is a dead rubber for them. I wouldn't be surprised if they try their bench players.

Full tosser who was chest thumping after defeating Namibia

What a pathetic joke it will be if he becomes captain

They still don't know whether it's India or WI
So I think they will try to finish no 1 in group

Also have revenge in mind against India when they lost to them in semis in 2024

But overall yeah NZ looks favourite on paper

Can't see anything but a close well contested match that could swing either way, hopefully England can prove too strong.

ENG open marginally fave at 1.85 [ wonder why ] but innings run-lines for both teams are quite similar at 168-171 for ENG & 164-167 for NZL . Looking at the way pitches have behaved at this venue , I would think 175 can be defended .

Winner of toss will be winner of match too

If England win toss 170 to 180 will be defendable

Hope England thrashes NZ today so that our cousins the mighty Pakistanis can have a fair shot at the semis.

That being said, NZ isn't that easy to thrash. Possible but it will take a mighty effort from England.

You also depend on group top team to beat other team while Pakistan also doing same.......

in t20 you need couple of them to fire...its not test cricket

NZ opt to bat first

Seriously? Lol

Same pitch as SL vs NZ. As long as there's no dew, the ball should turn even more tonight.

Dawson to NZ openers and Adil Rashid to NZ middle order. NZ better be exceptionally well prepared for this.

Dawson is a comparatively easier bowler to see off. Rashid will be very hard to hit on this ground.

Dawson has been a very tough bowler to put away in this World T20 whenever he came up against his matchups.

Allen and Seifert are not that strong against SLA's and with England playing only 1 pacer, I think Dawson will share the new ball

In all honesty it will be really challenging for England to beat this New Zealand side. New Zealand batting is too good. Only chance for England is if one of their top order clicks and scores big.

It would have been better for our cousins the mighty Pakistanis had England batted first and posted a huge total.

Anyway it’s all destiny brother. Let’s see.

Today, we all Asians have gathered here for the sake of Pakistan.

If you try to attack him. Otherwise he's not a tough bowler to see off/milk singles off
