ICC Teams and Player Rankings watch for 2019

Steve Smith, who followed up his twin tons at Edgbaston with a 92 at Lord's in the second Ashes Test, has reclaimed the No.2 spot in MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for Batsmen. Jofra Archer, meanwhile, has debuted at No.83 on the bowlers' ranking.

Smith's 92 in the second Ashes Test took his runs tally to 378 in three innings at an impressive average of 126. Despite being banned for a year, he is only nine points behind table-topper Virat Kohli, with Smith making up 19 points on the Indian captain after his performance at Lord's.

Pat Cummins, meanwhile, has strengthened his hold on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for Bowlers, reaching career-high ranking points.

Several Australians have made noteworthy strides in the batting rankings owing to their performances in the ongoing Ashes series. Travis Head climbed two spots to No.18, while Marnus Labuschagne has jumped 16 spots on the table to be No.82. Their English rivals, notably Ben Stokes (six spots up to No.26), Jonny Bairstow (seven spots up to No.30) and Rory Burns (17 spots up to No.64) have made advances too.

However, Australia's top-order players David Warner (down four), Usman Khawaja and Cameron Bancroft (both down five) have lost out.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne, whose brilliant 122 in the first Test helped his team claim a six-wicket win over New Zealand, has broken into the top 10, climbing four spots to No.8, the highest he has been in his seven-year Test career.

Among bowlers, Archer, who returned match figures of 5/91 in his debut Test at Lord's, has broken through in the rankings to 83rd. Jack Leach, who was playing only his sixth Test, climbed eight spots to be No.40. The left-arm spinner, who made his Test debut against New Zealand last year, has already picked up 24 wickets at an average of 24.16.

Sri Lankan spinner Akila Dananjaya was also impressive in the first Test against New Zealand at Galle and has jumped nine spots ahead to No.36. He claimed six wickets in the Test, which included a five-for in the first innings, where he rattled the Kiwi top order giving his team the early advantage.

Cummins, who is the top wicket-taker in Ashes this year with 13 scalps at 16.30, has also churned out handy performances with the bat and is now No.5 in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for All-rounders.

Ben Stokes rises to career-high rankings

Ben Stokes's heroics to win England the Headingley Test have taken him to No.2 on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for All-rounders, and seen him break into the top 15 on the batting charts.

Stokes, whose 135* in the third Ashes Test was one of the all-time great fourth-innings knocks, also took four wickets in the match, sending down 24.2 overs (including stepping in for an injured Jofra Archer) in Australia's second innings, over two days with no break.

As a result, he rose 13 places to No.13 on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for Batsmen, with a career-best 693 rating points. He rose by two places on the all-rounders' chart, with a career-best 411 rating points, only behind Jason Holder, after the latest update on Tuesday, 27 August.

Archer, meanwhile, continued his stunning start to international cricket, his six wickets in the first innings helping him vault 40 places to No.43 on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for Bowlers in just his second Test.

Overall, it was an upward trend for pace bowlers: India's Jasprit Bumrah stormed into the top 10, climbing nine places to No.7 with a career-high 774 points after his incredible 5/7 in the second innings in Antigua against West Indies. He was closely followed by the Windies' Kemar Roach (up three to No.8), while Australia's Josh Hazlewood was rewarded for his nine wickets at Headingley with a climb of three places to No.12. India's Ishant Sharma reached a career-best 671 points, sitting just outside the top 20.

Trent Boult, who reached the milestone of 250 Test wickets as New Zealand drew the Test series in Sri Lanka, is now in the top five. Speedster Pat Cummins continues to lead the charts, marking a strong week for fast bowling.

Among batsmen, in a chart led by India captain Virat Kohli, his counterparts from Sri Lanka and England, Dimuth Karunaratne and Joe Root, made strides. The Sri Lanka skipper had to be content with a half-century in Colombo, and while it didn't earn his side a win, it brought him a two-place move to No.6. Root, who shook off a spell of poor form with a fighting half-century with the series on the line, followed him at No.7.

Middle-order anchors Tom Latham (up five to No.8) and Ajinkya Rahane (up 10 to No.11) moved up after vital centuries for New Zealand and India respectively, while G Hanuma Vihari (up 40 to No.70) and Marnus Lauschangne (up 45 to No.37) grabbed opportunities to cement their places in their sides.

Sri Lanka quick Lasith Malinga, who picked up four wickets in four balls against New Zealand, has jumped 20 places to No.21 on the latest MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Rankings for Bowlers.

The updated rankings were released on Saturday, 7 September, after the end of the three-match T20I series, which New Zealand won 2-1.

Malinga, who became the first bowler to capture four wickets in four successive balls in both ODIs and T20Is, finished with figures of 4-1-6-5, as Sri Lanka notched up a consolation 37-run win in Pallekele. It was his fifth hat-trick overall in international cricket. With the first wicket of his spell, Malinga became the first male bowler to 100 T20I wickets.

New Zealand all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme, who top-scored for his side in the series with 103 runs in three innings, jumped a massive 43 places to reach No.80 in the batting rankings and broke into the top 20 on the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Rankings for All-rounders. He top scored for New Zealand in the second T20I, with his 46-ball 59 steering the chase of 162, and helping the visitors take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Kusal Mendis, who scored one more more than de Grandhomme to lead the series tally, gained 33 points, and is now occupying the 40th spot.

Babar Azam continues to be the top-ranked T20I batsman, while Glenn Maxwell exchanged his third place with second-ranked Colin Munro after the update.

In the bowling charts, left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner jumped six places to climb into the top 10, and is currently at No.5. Tim Southee, captaining the team in Kane Williamson’s absence, leaped 14 rungs to seal the 15th spot in the list, led by Afghanistan's Rashid Khan.

The update also includes the 11 games from the Romania Cup. Romanian all-rounder Pavel Florin, who gained immense internet popularity and support of some of cricket’s biggest names, officially entered the ICC player rankings at No.688. The 32-year-old represented Romania in four T20Is last month, picking up three wickets.

Steve Smith and Pat Cummins have consolidated their positions at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings after helping Australia score a 185-run victory over England in the fourth Test in Manchester to retain The Ashes.

• Hazlewood in top 10; Buttler and Burns also advance in latest update

• Rashid, Asghar and Rahmat make headway for Afghanistan

Smith’s player of the match effort of 211 and 82 runs in the two innings has lifted him to 937 rating points, only 10 less than his all-time best aggregate achieved in December 2017. He is now 34 points ahead of India captain Virat Kohli and virtually assured of remaining at the top at the end of the five-match series.

A match haul of seven for 103 has helped Cummins equal his career-best aggregate of 914 points, which is the joint fifth best of all time and joint best for Australia along with Glenn McGrath, who reached his best in 2001. Cummins is a good 63 rating points ahead of South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, with India’s Jasprit Bumrah in third place. Josh Hazlewood is in the top 10 for the first time this year, progressing from 12th to eighth.

Jos Buttler (up four places to 37th) and Rory Burns (up six places to a career-best 61st) for England and captain Tim Paine (up six places to 60th) of Australia have also moved up the batting list in the latest rankings update carried out on Monday and which also takes into account performances in the Chattogram Test.

Afghanistan’s 224-run conquest over Bangladesh in Chattogram has resulted in major gains for their players.

Former captain Asghar Afghan’s scores of 92 and 50 have taken him from 110th to 63rd position while Rahmat Shah’s century in the first innings has helped him move from 93rd to 65th. Captain Rashid Khan’s player of the match effort of 11 for 104 has lifted him from 69th to 37th while all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has retired from Tests in 85th position after gaining 21 slots.

For Bangladesh, left-arm spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam have inched up one slot each to 21st and 22nd, respectively. Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan has advanced 21 places to 66th position.

Smith and Cummins remain on top in Test Rankings

Smith’s scores of 80 and 23 have helped him remain 34 points ahead of Virat Kohli with 937 rating points, an incredible effort since he started the series in fourth position with 857 points before his surge that came courtesy 774 runs in four Tests. Cummins too is well clear of other bowlers as he enjoys a lead of 57 points over second-placed Kagiso Rabada after finishing as the top wicket-taker with 29 scalps.

Other players from Australia to make notable gains are Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh. Wade’s fourth Test century has lifted him 32 places to 78th, his highest since being ranked 52nd in March 2013. Marsh’s maiden five-wicket haul has helped him gain 20 places to reach 54th place, his best since March 2017.

David Warner has lost seven places after the Test to finish in 24th position among batsmen. He has slid 19 places during the five matches with a tally of 95 runs in 10 innings, starting the series in fifth position. Josh Hazlewood has dropped from 12th to eighth after briefly making the top-10 among bowlers.

For England, fast bowler Jofra Archer has moved into the top 40 for the first time after grabbing six first-innings wickets while left-arm seamer Sam Curran has gained six slots to reach 65th position with three wickets.

Jos Buttler’s scores of 70 and 47 have lifted him back into the world’s top 30 for the first time since January this year while Joe Denly’s career-best score of 94 has taken him to a career-highest 57th place. Rory Burns has also moved up five places to 56th position.

Kohli, Dhawan inch towards top 10, new highs for Zazai and Munsey

Kohli’s unbeaten 72 in the second T20I of the three-match series against South Africa that ended in a 1-1 draw, has seen him gain one spot and reach 11th in the batting list while Dhawan has moved up three places to 13th after scores of 40 and 36.

The latest rankings update takes into account the India-South Africa series, the Bangladesh tri-series also featuring Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, as well as the Ireland tri-series in which Scotland and the Netherlands were the other teams.

Fifth-ranked Zazai’s current 727 points are the highest by an Afghanistan batsman in history while 21st-ranked Munsey became the first Scotland batsman to reach 600 points after scoring an unbeaten 127 off just 56 balls against the Netherlands before dropping to 585 at the end of the series.

The series in India also saw South Africa’s Quinton de Kock move up from 49th to 30th, his highest position in two years, after scores of 52 and 79 not out. Spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has reached the top 20 in the bowlers’ list for the first time while Andile Phehlukwayo has achieved a career-best ranking of seventh.

There were also some interesting facts in the Bangladesh tri-series. Captain Hamilton Masakadza retired from international cricket in 22nd place as Zimbabwe’s highest ranked batsman at the time and Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman has moved into the top 10 with seven wickets in the series.

The Ireland series saw the Dutch pair of Ben Cooper and Max O’Dowd achieve their highest rankings at joint 41st among batsmen while Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien has achieved a career-high 459 rating points in batting. Andrew Balbirnie has also progressed from 95th to 53rd in the same list.

There is also some good news for players from Scotland, who are currently ranked 12th in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, as seamers Alasdair Evans and Richie Berrington have achieved career-bests during the Malahide tournament.

Sharma reaches career-best ranking after twin centuries

India batsman Rohit Sharma, who became the first player to score a century in each innings of his maiden Test as opener, has reached a career-best 17th position in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings.

Sharma, who slammed three previous centuries in Tests, has gained a whopping 36 slots after his knocks of 176 and 127 in the first Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam helped India win by 203 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Other opener Mayank Agarwal has also attained a career-best 25th position after his first innings double-century lifted him 38 places. Captain Virat Kohli has dropped below the 900-point mark for the first time since January 2018. He is now on 899 points, 38 behind top-ranked Steve Smith.

Among the bowlers, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a comeback to the top 10 after his match haul of eight wickets, which included figures of seven for 145 in the first innings. The formerly top-ranked bowler has moved up four places from 14th position and also into the top five among all-rounders.

Fast bowler Mohammad Shami has reached a career-best 710 points that took him from 18th to 16th, two below his career-best 14th rank, while Ravindra Jadeja has leapfrogged Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan to take second position among all-rounders.

For South Africa, centurions Quinton de Kock and Dean Elgar have progressed. De Kock is back into the top 10 after gaining four places and moving to seventh while Elgar has moved five places and is in 14th position.

India have gained 40 points in the ICC World Test Championship table after the win at Visakhapatnam and are now on 160 points after having won a full 120 points for a 2-0 series win in the West Indies. New Zealand and Sri Lanka are on 60 points each after their 1-1 series draw while Australia and England are on 56 each with their 2-2 series draw in a five-match series.

The points in the WTC are evenly distributed over the number of matches in a series (two to five), which were decided by the Member countries as per their bilateral agreements. Thus, the points can vary from 60 for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series.

Kohli comes to within one point of Smith after smashing double ton

Kohli, who had dropped below 900 points after the first Test for the first time since January 2018, has reached 936 points, which is only one below his career-best rating points achieved in August 2018. The No. 1 ODI batsman thus has a chance to regain the top spot after the final Test in Ranchi.

Opener Mayank Agarwal continues to rise up the rankings. His innings of 108 has lifted him into the top 20 for the first time. He has progressed eight places to reach 17th position after contributing to India’s victory by an innings and 137 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja is at a career-best 40th position among batsmen while spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and fast bowler Umesh Yadav have advanced among bowlers after finishing with six wickets each in Pune. Ashwin has gained three places to reach seventh position while Yadav has moved up six places to 25th, just four below his best of 21st achieved in July 2016.

For South Africa, tail-enders Vernon Philander and Keshav Maharaj have gained with the bat. Philander has moved up from 92nd to 82nd while Maharaj has advanced from 130th to 115th.

India have gained 40 points in the ICC World Test Championship table after the Ranchi win to reach 200 points. They had won a full 120 points for a 2-0 series win in the West Indies and are in line to double that tally in this series.

The points in the WTC are evenly distributed over the number of matches in a series (two to five), which were decided by the Member countries as per their bilateral agreements. Thus, the points can vary from 60 for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series.

Rohit emulates Kohli and Gambhir

Sharma emulated captain Virat Kohli and retired India opener Gautam Gambhir as his knock of 212 in the third Test in Ranchi helped him advance 12 places to 10th position in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings. Sharma’s player of the series effort of 529 runs helped him make huge strides from 44th place before the series.

Sharma has held a career-high ranking of second in ODIs (in February 2018) and seventh in T20Is (November 2018). Kohli has been number one in all three formats while Gambhir has been at the top in Tests and T20Is and eighth in ODIs.

Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane’s knock of 116 in Ranchi has helped him equal his career-high rank of fifth place, achieved earlier in November 2016. He remains the third-best Indian batsman in terms of Test rankings after Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. With Mayanka Agarwal in 18th position, India have finished the series with five batsmen in the top 20.

Fast bowlers Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav have ended the series with their highest-ever rating points tally. Shami is on 751 points and only one place below his career-best ranking of 14th achieved in March 2018, while Yadav is on 624 points, three below his best of 21st in July 2016.

For South Africa, George Linde has started in 104th position among batsmen after scores of 37 and 27 and 99th among bowlers after finishing with four wickets.

T20WCQ stars make big gains in ICC T20I rankings

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in the United Arab Emirates, apart from deciding six teams for next year’s T20 World Cup, proved to be a perfect platform for participating cricketers to showcase their potential.

Across 51 games, several instances of individual brilliance stood out, and the top performances are reflected in the latest update to the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Rankings, released on Monday, 11 November.

Netherlands’ veteran par-excellence, Ryan ten Doeschate, enjoyed a stunning run, helping his team qualify and finish as tournament winners. With 233 runs at 46.60, ten Doeschate leaped 117 spots to break into the top 100, placing himself on the 70th spot on the MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Rankings for batsmen. Colin Ackermann, who also starred in the final, rose 43 spots to No.107.

Their teammates Paul van Meekeren (up two to No.40) and Roelof van der Merwe (up 10 to No.43), who were also in the Team of the Tournament, made strides in the bowling charts. Van der Merwe, leading Netherlands’ spin charge with aplomb, took 14 wickets all tournament.

Scotland’s George Munsey climbed to be the highest-ranked batsman from the tournament, gaining three points to be 18th. Ireland’s Paul Stirling, their rock at the top of the order and the highest run-getter in the tournament with 291 runs at 41.57, moved five places to reach No.21.

Jatinder Singh, Oman’s top run-getter with 267 runs and third on the list overall, shot up to 46th, moving up by 54 places. His 67* against Hong Kong helped his side seal a spot in Australia.

Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus, Player of the Tournament with 268 runs and three fifties, made a triple-digit jump, leaping 101 places to No.73. He also moved up 67 places on the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Rankings for all-rounders, to be 26th.

The rankings reflect just how vital all-rounders were in the tournament. Oman skipper Zeeshan Maqsood (up five places to No.6), Kevin O'Brien (one spot down from seventh) and Collins Obuya (up eight places to No.8) are in the top 10, with Rohan Mustafa, UAE’s man for a crisis, joining Stirling on the 10th spot.

Assad Vala, whose all-round expertise helped Papua New Guinea become the first team from the tournament to qualify for Australia, jumped 55 places to 28th, while JJ Smit, Namibia’s clutch all-rounder and tournament’s third-highest wicket-taker (16 wickets from nine games), made an astonishing leap of 357 rungs, to shoot up to 33rd place. He also jumped by 408 ranks in the batting charts, to reach 129, having ended the tournament with a strike-rate of 168.

Among bowlers, Mark Watt, whose golden arm gave Scotland 12 wickets in seven games, ended as the highest-ranked bowler from the tournament, at No.15. Ireland’s Mark Adair (12 wickets from eight games) follows him at No.21, having leaped 75 points after his exploits in UAE.

Oman's Bilal Khan, whose searing left-arm pace made him the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, stayed unmoved at No.31.

Bernard Scholtz’s crafty left-arm spin saw him lead the wicket charts for a considerable period in the tournament; he finished with 15 scalps for Namibia in nine games, leaping 146 spots to 63.

Malan and Finch move towards the top in T20I rankings

England’s Dawid Malan has made a grand re-entry to the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings, grabbing third position in the batsmen’s list led by Pakistan’s Babar Azam, while Aaron Finch of Australia has taken the second spot after gaining two positions.

Malan, whose tally of 458 runs is more than anyone else in the first nine matches, though remains 94 rating points adrift of Babar in the latest update which includes the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019, the series between Australia and Pakistan, between New Zealand and England, as well as the one between India and Bangladesh.

England captain Eoin Morgan and New Zealand opener Martin Guptill have also made notable movements to take joint ninth place while Jonny Bairstow has reached a career-best 498 rating points and is in the top 40 for the first time.

Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Naim’s 143 runs in three matches see him at joint-38th position along with Bairstow, one slot behind Tony Ura, the top-ranked Papua New Guinea batsman. Other batsmen to advance include Calum MacLeod of Scotland (up five places to 44th), Muhammad Usman of the United Arab Emirates (up 18 places to 45th) and Oman opener Jatinder Singh (up 54 places to 46th).

India fast bowler Deepak Chahar, who returned a world record haul of six for seven against Bangladesh on Sunday, has moved up 88 slots to 42nd position but the bowlers’ list continues to be led by slow bowlers. The top five and eight of the top nine are spinners, with Mitchell Santner reaching second place - his best position since he topped the table in January 2018.

Other left-arm spinners too have gained. Ashton Agar’s fine performances against Sri Lanka and Pakistan have seen him move up 57 places to ninth while Scotland's Mark Watt's successful ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 sees him advance 13 places to 15th.

In the all-rounders’ table, Glenn Maxwell's continued absence has enabled Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi to move above him to take the top spot for the first time, while Oman’s Zeeshan Maqsood has moved up from 11th to sixth.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, Pakistan continue at the top with 270 points but Australia are only one point behind them after winning their three-match series 2-0. England, South Africa and India occupy the next three positions and are within five points of each other as teams gear up for next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

New highs for Shami and Agarwal in Test rankings

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami and opening batsman Mayank Agarwal have reached career-best positions in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings after contributing in an innings and 130-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test in Indore.

Shami’s bowling figures of three for 27 and four for 31 have lifted him eight places to seventh position. His 790 rating points are the third best for an India pace bowler with only Kapil Dev (877) and Jasprit Bumrah (832) having recorded more points.

Agarwal has reached 11th position after his player of the match effort of 243 in India’s only innings. The 28-year-old has reached 691 rating points after scoring 858 runs in his first eight Tests. Only seven players have scored more runs than him in their first eight Tests – Don Bradman (1210), Everton Weekes (968), Sunil Gavaskar (938), Mark Taylor (906), George Headley (904), Frank Worrell (890) and Herbert Sutcliffe (872).

In other significant movements for India after they secured a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has advanced four slots to reach joint-35th position among batsmen while fast bowlers Ishant Sharma (20th) and Umesh Yadav (22nd) have moved up one slot each. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin remains among the top 10 bowlers while moving back to fourth position among all-rounders.

For Bangladesh, Mushfiqur Rahim’s knocks of 43 and 64 have helped him gain five places and reach 30th position while Liton Das has moved up from 92nd to 86th position. Among bowlers, fast bowler Abu Jayed, who took four wickets in Indore, has advanced 18 slots to take 62nd position after only six Tests.

Meanwhile, India strengthened their position in the ICC World Test Championship standings by reaching 300 points. They are yet to concede a point, having gained a full 120 points each in their three-Test home series against South Africa and two-Test series in the West Indies.

Each Test of the ongoing two-match series is worth 60 points since the 120 points up for grab in a series are evenly distributed over the number of matches in a series. The points range from 60 points for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are on 60 points each after drawing their two-match series 1-1 while England and Australia are on 56 each after their five-match Ashes series ended 2-2. The West Indies and South Africa failed to get any points in their opening series.

Pakistan will play their first WTC series against Australia starting later this week. The first match of the two-Test series starts in Brisbane on Thursday while the second Test, a day-night fixture, will be played in Adelaide from 29 November.

The top two teams at the end of the league will play the final in the UK in June 2021 with the winners crowned the World Test Champions.

Labuschagne and Watling move towards top 10

Marnus Labuschagne and Bradley-John Watling have achieved career-best positions in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings with epic knocks that also won them Player of the Match awards this week.

Labuschagne’s score of 185 that helped Australia to victory over Pakistan by an innings and five runs in Brisbane has taken him from 35th to 14th place, while Watling’s 205 in Tauranga not only helped New Zealand beat England by an innings and 65 runs but has also lifted him 12 places to 12th position.

Labuschagne occupied 95th position when summoned as a concussion substitute for Steve Smith in the Lord’s Ashes Test in August and has made rapid progress since then, while Watling too has much to celebrate, as he is now the top-ranked wicketkeeper-batsman, having overtaken South Africa’s Quinton de Kock.

Apart from Labuschagne, the other Australia batsmen to advance in the latest rankings update include opener David Warner (up six places to 17th), Joe Burns (up 11 places to 62nd) and Matthew Wade (up four places to 70th) while fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has moved from 13th to joint-ninth in the bowlers’ list.

Their opposition Pakistan did not have much to cheer about with Shan Masood (up seven places to 57th) among batsmen and Haris Sohail (up 12 places to 81st) among bowlers moving up in the latest update that also takes into account performances in the day-night Kolkata Test in which India defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 46 runs.

Watling is not the only one to gain big from his team as Neil Wagner’s eight-wicket match haul has catapulted him to a career-best third position with a tally of 816 rating points, the third best ever by a New Zealand bowler after Richard Hadlee (909 points) and Trent Boult (825).

England all-rounder Ben Stokes is in the top 10 for batsmen for the first time after scores of 91 and 28 helped him gain three slots, while Joe Denly and Rory Burns have also made notable progress.

India captain Virat Kohli’s commanding century in Kolkata has helped him bridge the gap with top-ranked Steve Smith from 25 to three points while opener Mayank Agarwal has reached the top 10 for the first time.

India fast bowlers Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav are at career-high points tallies after victory over Bangladesh. Ishant has 716 points but is in 17th place, way behind his career-best seventh place achieved in July 2011.

Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim has gained four slots to reach 26th position after scoring a fighting 74 in the second innings of the Kolkata Test while Liton Das is up eight slots to 78th position.

Labuschagne's awesome run lifts him into top five

Babar Azam has reached the top 10 for the first time, moving from 13th to ninth position after his unbeaten knock of 102. He is currently No.1 in the T20I rankings and has enjoyed a best ranking of second in the ODIs.

Left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Afridi (up two places to 47th) and Naseem Shah (up 15 places to 110th) have also gained in the latest update.

Hope moves into top 10 of ODI rankings

West Indies opener Shai Hope has entered the top 10 of the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings after showing fine form in the three-match series in India that ended on Sunday.

The wicketkeeper-batsman has gained five places to reach ninth position after scoring 222 runs in the series including an unbeaten 102 in the opening match in Chennai, which his side won before going down in Visakhapatnam and Cuttack.

Also moving up in the batting rankings are his teammates Shimron Hetmyer (up six places to 19th) and Nicholas Pooran (up 33 places to 30th). Fast bowlers Sheldon Cottrell (up six places to 30th) and Keemo Paul (up 35 places to 104th) have also gained in the latest rankings update.

The batting list continues to be led by the Indian pair of captain Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are in first and second place, while Lokesh Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have made notable gains. Rahul’s 185 runs in the series have lifted him 17 places to 71st place while Iyer’s 130-run aggregate sees him move from 104th to 81st.

THE Standard Bank Proteas winning performance in the first Test match against England is well reflected in the latest ICC Test match rankings for players.

Quinton de Kock, the Man of the Match and leading runs scorer in the match, is back in the top 10 among the batsmen while Vernon Philander, who was largely responsible for the Proteas taking a match-winning first innings lead, has jumped up to fifth place among the bowlers.

He is also ranked No. 4 among the top all-rounders.

Kagiso Rabada, in spite of taking seven wickets, has dropped one position to No. 3 among the bowlers.

Anrich Nortje has jumped no fewer than 36 places into the top 100 and is now ranked at No. 96.

De Kock finished the calendar year ninth on the runs scoring chart with 713 runs (two centuries) at an average of 47.53 from only 8 matches.

Rabada finished joint sixth on the wickets-taking chart with 33 wickets at 27.39.

“It feels great to be one nil up in the series and to have started the journey to getting back to our winning ways,” commented De Kock. “There’s still a long road ahead, the series is not won yet but I’m glad to have contributed to the team in a meaningful way. It was a really good way to end the year. I’m not really bothered about accolades and rankings, but I’m happy that the team is in a good space and I’m really looking forward to a good new year’s Test in Cape Town.”

Philander goes into the final three matches of his Test career with 1700 runs and 220 wickets at the highest level and has a real chance of achieving the all-rounder’s double of 2000 runs and 200 wickets.

Shaun Pollock and Jacques Kallis are the only two South Africans to have achieved this.

Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has finished the year at a career-best fourth position while South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock has moved into the top 10 of the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings in the latest update carried out on Monday.

Labuschagne, who was ranked 110th at the start of the year, has moved up one slot after scores of 63 and 19 in the Melbourne Test against New Zealand, which Australia won by 247 runs to go 2-0 up in the three-match series. De Kock’s ‘player of the match’ effort of 95 and 34, which helped his team beat England by 107 runs at Centurion to go 1-0 up in the four-match series, sees him advance eight places and reach 10th position.

The batting list continues to be led by India captain Virat Kohli, who was at the top for 274 days in 2019. Australia’s Steve Smith finished in second place after having occupied the top position for 91 days during the year.

They are on 256 points and could go up to 296 by the end of the series. South Africa have 30 points after their first win in the WTC while New Zealand and England remain on 60 and 56 points, respectively.

Each series of the WTC is worth 120 points, distributed evenly over the number of matches in a series. The points range from 60 points for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series. The top two teams at the end of the league will play the final in the UK in June 2021 with the winners crowned the World Test Champions.
