ICC World Cup 2023: South Africa (311/7) inflict a massive 134-run defeat over Australia (177 all out)

Wrist spinners will struggle to grip under lights compared to finger spinners. But having said that Shamsi was known for this

They need to drop labu or Smith.
He was not part of the WC squad. Head's injury and also his 50 against SA as concussion sub brought him back into the side. SA has done a favor for other teams by conceding a 50 to him in that match.

He is taking the place of Sangha . should have never selected in 15 members squad

That was a peach. Guys like SHamsi may play an important role for SA. They should back him despite his occasional expensive overs

South Africa neither have the experience nor the batting depth to go all the way

Jansen is an absolute lock at 7 considering the batting ends at 6 , lol.

Ideally they needed another allrounder at 7 and Jansen at 8 .

Maybe Mulder/Linde/Muthuswamy . Not sure Andile is the answer.

Australia 177 all out (Labuschagne 46, Starc 37)
South Africa win by 134 runs

South Africa's NRR will be insane after this

They have the strongest hitting middle order. Few of them are familiar with INdian conditions. Yes they will have their struggles. So are other sides. All sides have some weakness or the other. If it flares up in the most crucial match they will need a plan B.

This is the most comprehensive performance I've seen from us in World Cups (outside thrashing the lowly Windies)

As usual, SAF are looking frighteningly good in preliminary stage - they’ll walk past to SF. Even, for the sake of saying, if they loose to NZ, PAK, ENG & IND, still if they just manage to keep loosing margins close, they can still qualify on NRR by bashing BD, AFG & NED - 5 wins & a healthy NRR should be enough for the 4th spot. But, I believe they’ll win at least 5 of the 7 remaining games, until SF.

They are playing so clinical & almost perfect cricket that, when the plot goes south, they’ll stumble big time - hope it’s not the SF.

For the first time, they gave a Captain who belongs to the majority of their people - I’m hoping a change of luck for them this time.

The Aussie batting is dependent on a top 6 of whom most are past their best and reaching a point of retirement soon. No shock they have been poor in this WC so far

South Africa have made another early Cricket World Cup 2023 statement, beating Australia by 134 runs in match 10 in Lucknow.

Despite the best efforts of Australia trying to lessen the blow, factoring in net run rate, the Proteas were clinical with the ball through both pace and spin to bundle Australia out for just 177.

Australia's attempt damage limitation came after a new-ball blitz from South Africa who looked imperious under the lights, removing five opposition batters inside the first 100 balls of the innings.

Wickets for Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi and Rabada meant that South Africa were well on top early in Australia's reply, also backed by their fielders, who looked sharper than their opponents.

Slumping to 65/5 as Glenn Maxwell fell for three off the bowling of Keshav Maharaj, Marcus Stoinis was then deemed caught behind soon after for Kagiso Rabada's third wicket, taking Australia deeper in a hole at 70/6.

It took until the 26th over for the Australians to reach three figures, with Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc stitching together a 69-run partnership.

Cummins moved into the 20s in a final net run rate save attempt, though Australia's innings was wrapped up inside 41 overs.

Match 10: South Africa 311/7 (50 overs) defeated Australia 177 (40.5 overs)

Australia were off to a sedate start in pursuit of 312, watchful in the first five overs. The scoring picked up in an extras-laden sixth over, when Marco Jansen bowled five no-balls and five wides with a space of three balls. However, he managed a breakthrough off the fifth ball of the over, when Mitchell Marsh tried to take him on.

The ball took a leading edge and ended up in the safe hands of Temba Bavuma at mid-off. In the next over, Marsh's opening partner David Warner (13) then fell trying to pierce the cover region. With two wickets inside the first seven overs, South Africa were ahead in the contest.

Kagiso Rabada then had Steve Smith lbw for 19 in the 10th over to further put the Proteas ahead.

Josh Inglis, who had come in the place of Alex Carey, was bowled by Rabada for just five in the 12th over. Then Maxwell, who struggled to get going through the evening, gifted a return catch to Keshav Maharaj. Rabada then struck in the 18th over to get Marcus Stoinis caught behind for five.

Earlier, South Africa laid the foundations to compile a massive total in Lucknow, largely off the back of a Quinton de Kock century.

The left-handed opener pummelled five sixes alongside eight fours, bringing up three figures in just 90 deliveries, before falling to Glenn Maxwell to finish with 109.

De Kock's second ton of the competition also meant he leapfrogged Mohammad Rizwan (199) as the tournament's highest run-scorer, moving to 209 at an average of 104.50.

The Proteas at one point looked odds on to reach a total in excess of 350, though a mini fightback from Glenn Maxwell stemmed the flow of runs a tad. The off-spinner finished with 2/34 from his ten overs, including a maiden, going all the way through his spell without conceding a boundary.

Maxwell claimed both openers in his effort, while spin partner Adam Zampa ended the stay of Rassie van der Dussen for just 26.

Van der Dussen in the knock passed 2000 runs in ODI cricket in just 45 innings, only bettered by countryman Hashim Amla (40). The right-hander went down the track and tried to slog Zampa over long-on. However, he failed to gain the elevation and was caught by Sean Abbott.

The sides have had contrasting starts to their World Cup campaign. While Australia struggled on a tough track in Chennai and lost to India, South Africa dominated on a flat deck in Delhi to win against Sri Lanka.

Lungi's pitch map for his first spell. Accurate lines and lengths to both LHB and RHB.

Hasan Ali also found success with very accurate bowling.

Test match bowling working more often than not in this World Cup.

Stupid batting at the end from Aus. They were losing anyway - atleast bat out out the 50 overs and reduce the nrr damage as it's a long tournament. Yes exhaust the win option completely before doing this. But they just went for glory shots at the end. The Starc Labu partnership should have carried on

They don't need labu they already have smith and yes they done other teams a favour definitely.

The reason almost nobody rates this attack highly is because no one inspires any assurance to win a big match. I don't get any confidence from these guys that Donald, Pollock, Ntini, Steyn, Morkel used to provide. They have been really poor for quite some time in tournaments even though generally they are good in bilaterals.
Bavuma will struggle in almost all of the big five matches, you will disagree certainly which is understandable. But he has a certain ceiling & he can't go beyond that.
Ultimately these boys can prove your faith right by knocking the Aussies away.
Steyn bottled a World Cup himself. Bowled a length delivery at the death. If runs are on the board or there's a bit of juice in the wicket, then this bowling attack is more than good enough to do a job. In reality we haven't had a gun ODI bowler since Donald. We've produced quicks who refuse to attack the stumps since.

It's true, Steyn despite possessing terrific numbers never truly did anything substantial for SA in tournaments when it truly mattered which is why I don't rate him that high. The way he surrendered to Kohli in 14 & Mccullum/Elliot in 15 really doesn't suit a great fast bowler. Taking all things considered Donald is the real goat SA fast, not Steyn, he is not even 2nd, I would place Pollock there. Donald & Pollock were better gun odi bowlers than Steyn, Morkel or Ntini. Now after many many years Rabada /Lungi have a chance to rewrite history. Let's see if they can keep up the good work.
