What's new

ICC World Cup 2023: This is already a great World Cup and could be the GOAT of all World Cups!

NZ vs SL match is probably the first match that will be impacted completely by rain. That in itself is a blessing. But NZ always attracts rain. They attracted rain in 2019 as well.

Most entertaining matches of this tournament :-

Aus vs Afg
SA vs Pak
Pak vs NZ
Aus vs NZ
Ind vs NZ
BD vs SL

That's the top 6. NZ finds a spot in three of them, Pak two, SA will probably produce one in semis too. These three teams produce most thrillers in WC.

1. Pakistan - Mercurial, unpredictable & unstoppable

2. Australia - They played like Pakistan in this World Cup and have entertained us

3. Afghanistan - They played a brave brand of cricket and went toe to toe with the best. They even defeated Pakistan who are known to be mercurial, unpredictable & unstoppable.

4. Southern Afrikaan - They were devastating with the bat and have been one of the gun teams. They played the best match of the tournament beating Pakistan who are known to be mercurial & are a tournament tigers.

5. Netherlands - They played like the Dutch. Defeated South Africa and almost defeated Pakistan.

6. New Zealand - They have a phenomenal match against Aussies and Pakistan, and were able to lose after spectacularly hitting 390-400 runs.

This World Cup started off in a boring manner.

But, it became exciting once Afghans beat England. From there on, quite a few upsets/exciting games happened.

I think this World Cup has been okay overall. Better than 2015 and 2007 ones. But, definitely not the GOAT (too many high-scoring games and one-sided games for my liking).

Only the first four matches on your list were entertaining.
How exactly was BD vs SL interesting?

So 4/42. That's just too bad a ratio in a format where games are 8.5 hours long

2015 and 2019 world cups were terrible for spinners. This somewhat has restored the balance. Also provides help to seamers

Proves that it's a myth that Indian pitches don't suit fast bowling.
They 100% do. You just need to be skilled in terms of having the ability to intimidate batsmen via bounce and seam movement. You also need 135 to 145 pace. You don't need to be express.

yes. World cup is not over yet. Let us see if pace unit breaks the 700 barrier.

A 3D projection was showcased by the ICC and the BCCI to mark the beginning of Diwali, the festival of lights, and celebrate the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup on the historical Gateway of India in Mumbai tonight.

Looks like that BCCI and ICC already know that Pakistan stands no chance and is not going to qualify for the Semis.

What a great World Cup. Much more bowler friendly than any World Cup since 2011 which was also in India. No wonder this World Cup feels so retro. Much closer to the other World Cups with both pacers and spinners coming into play.

2019 was a terrible tournament with spinners being absolute cannon fodder.

Given that we started using 2 new balls in the last 3 world cup these are good numbers.

How else can England win? Infact they dint even deserve to win in 2019. It was a farce

When England was in a must win situation they altered the boundaries as well. This is what Kohli had to say. That match was not a must win match for India. But for England it was a must win.

Kohli said: "The toss was vital, especially since the boundary was that short.

"It's a coincidence that it just falls under the limitation of the shortest you can have in the tournament. Quite bizarre on a flat pitch. It's the first time we've experienced that. It is crazy things fall in place randomly.

"If batsmen are able to reverse sweep you for six on a 59-metre boundary there is not much you can do as a spinner. One side was 82 metres.

India should have played vijay shankar in that game along with pandya shami bumrah and buvanesh. Maybe another AR like shardul. No need for spin there. Eng would have lost I am sure.

It is not about BCCI everytime. Other asian nations also deserve to host tournaments. :inti
But they can bid for the World Cup themselves, no? I agree that everyone should have the right to host a World Cup. But India is big enough to host one by itself.

One workable solution could be very 3rd World Cup in Asia, with India hosting one alone, and the other one hosted jointly between all Asian countries.

Pakistan creating yet another one sided game in order to humiliate the host nation.

5d chess from Babar and Mickey. Take that India.

We have some very good games in this World Cup but there should be more last over thrillers in the World Cup. There have been too many one-sided games that were not the ideal for the tournament.

Yup.

I think this World Cup only had one last over thriller (Australia-NZ). Rest were either one-sided or finished way before last overs.

It has been an okay World Cup. I have seen better World Cups (1999 and 2019).

Pakistan vs South Africa was also a good one.

Well honestly a better one! but few things regarding DRS will remain questionable in this event.

Lol 397 runs in the semifinal. What an awful world cup this has been.

Match is already done and dusted for the chasing team due to so much pressure.

This has been the story of this one sided world cup.

One team scores in the exaggeration of 330 other team has not been able to chase.

This has been the worst world cup ever.

For Indian fans it will be with a win in the final.

This is the first time I have not watched the semi final of a world cup. I wont be watching the final either lol.

Poor world cup, flat tracks, no world fans.

Australia will beat India in the final, so I expect Indians to join my view soon enough.

Two stunner semi finals back to back. 🔥

Greatest World Cup of all times and ages!

2019 WC final was possibly the best World Cup match of all time.

2019 group stage matches were entertaining. There weren't many one-sided games. Also, crowds seemed more engaged.

I think 2019 WC was pretty good.
2019 group games were meh, Goat final though.

2011 was good throughout.

1999 awesome group games with absolute garbage final.

1987 was actually very interesting , so many close games.

2019 group games were good too.

Some great games from 2019 group stage:

BD vs South Africa (BD posted 330-ish and then won)
Pakistan vs NZ
Pakistan vs South Africa
NZ vs Windies
Windies vs Australia
Pakistan vs Afghanistan

All were great games.

Any tournament with 40 50 games is bound to give a couple of close ones. That is not a big deal.

This world cup has had the worst crowd, no ounce of neutrality whatsoever, barely any interest in any other team but the host. Last minute scheduling changes, and entries denied to genuine fans of the participating countries. Two sided wickets with Wankhede getting a reputation that it does 'something' for the first 10 overs in 2nd innings, albeit at the convenience of the hosts making use of this strange phenomenon by batting first all the time.

Pitches being tampered, coins being thrown out of eyeline, this world cup has definitely been a sight to behold for the hosts.

Not seen this level of bias for a world tournament and the ICC will need to do something special next time to top their current efforts of pleasing the BCCI in a much more innovative way.

2023 World Cup so far:

Best game of the tournament: Australia vs New Zealand

Worst game of the tournament: India vs Sri Lanka

Spiciest game of the tournament (controversies and fights): BD vs Sri Lanka.

Definitely the least enjoyable World Cup for me. Some of the surfaces weren’t great, absolute run fests. And with no team giving competition to unbeatable India it’s hard to get excited. Something so predictable it might aswell be WWE.

The WC was bearable until it was uncovered that India were picking and choosing pitches to their liking.

Now it is obvious that this tournament was nothing but a formality with every advantage possible designed to ensure India win.

This WC will go down as the most corrupt in history.

If Australia win it’ll truly be 11 guys against a whole country.

Don’t you ever lose heart.
Good times will come.

I’m also not supporting any Bharatiya fan who is acting cocky right now.

It’s about being humble.
I wish your team best, you will also see these good days soon.

Did not appreciate the partisan support and massive pro-India vibe, given that it was an International event... but I thoroughly enjoyed this World Cup, nonetheless.

India did a great job hosting it. Very polished show, showcasing some brilliant cricket in beautiful stadia / backdrops. What a month and a half. Will miss it.

Any World Cup where Pakistan fail is a rubbish one, but to say it’s one of the best is stretching it

Not an enjoyable tournament to be honest. Too many games were dominated by the bat, and the sullen crowds in Gujarat marred the atmosphere in games staged there.

High quality cricket throughout. Good stuff. Congrats to Australia on winning the last meaningful World Cup.

6 time Champions !

Terrible World Cup and organization. The final presentation ceremony at the modi stadium was a disaster. The indian presenter and board officials looked like they were in a shock after the loss.

Most games were decided on the toss and were one sided. Very few entertaining and close games. Overall this was probably the least entertaining World Cup ever. The final was probably the best but only because it was fun to see the home crowd silenced and shocked like that.

They should really do something about the dew factor and toss and the overall pitches in the SC, they are ruining the game of cricket there. England is still the best place for producing exciting and balanced matches.

Australia journey in this Wc definitely makes it a GOAT of GOAT WCs, reminiscent to 83,92 & 96

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the successful hosting of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which has been the biggest Cricket World Cup ever.

Australia beat India to claim their sixth Men’s Cricket World Cup in front of a packed crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world’s biggest cricket stadium. The World Cup has been the most attended ICC event ever and records have also been broken across broadcast and digital.

The 2023 edition has showcased the very best of cricket in one day, combining the unique Indian passion for cricket with the national pride of all competing nations creating an unrivalled global sporting occasion which captured the imagination of fans from across the world.

The event was delivered from 5 October to 19 November across ten host cities Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune, including the warm-up venues of Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram.

ICC Chair Greg Barclay said: “We are delighted with the success of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which has been the biggest Cricket World Cup ever. The event has been the most attended ICC World Cup ever with records shattered across broadcast and digital showcasing the support and interest for the one-day game.

“I’d like to thank the Board of Control for Cricket in India for delivering a World Cup that was a true celebration of the best all-round cricket experience that brought fans closer to the action than ever before. Thank you must also go to the Match Officials and to the ICC staff for delivering a world class global cricket event.

“Thank you to all ten teams for making this such a wonderful World Cup and to India and Australia for such a compelling final to conclude the event. Congratulations to Australia for winning a remarkable sixth ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.”

Since 2011, hosts have been winning the World Cup. For example, India won the ICC World Cup in 2011 and was also the host. In 2015, Australia hosted and won the title. In 2019, England was the host and won the title based on boundary counts. However, that streak has broken this time, as Australia won the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023, and the host was India.

This world cup has shattered many records and will definitely be regarded as one of the greatest tournaments.

-----------------------------------------------------

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has made history by being the most attended ICC event ever, after 1,250,307 fans passed through the turnstiles to witness the biggest Cricket World Cup, culminating in Australia winning a remarkable sixth title.

With six games to go the spectator figures had already surpassed the one million mark with the momentum escalating as the World Cup culminated in front of a packed crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

The event which ran from 5 October to 19 November and promised to place fans at the centre of the action recorded the biggest attendance for a Men’s Cricket World Cup opening match when England faced New Zealand in a repeat of the 2019 final, followed by the most attended India against Pakistan fixture in ICC World Cup history when fans flocked through the turnstiles on 14 October.

The figure of over 1.25 million fans is a new benchmark in the history of cricket, surpassing the attendance figures of any other ICC event. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2015, held in Australia and New Zealand, witnessed 1,016,420 spectators, while the 2019 edition in England and Wales saw 752,000 fans come through the turnstiles.

The 13th edition of the Men’s Cricket World Cup held in India has eclipsed these figures as well as breaking multiple broadcast and digital viewership records, proving the global reach and ever-growing popularity of the sport.

Chris Tetley, ICC Head of Events said, "The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has been a great success, showcasing the best aspects of the game and capturing the hearts of hundreds of millions of fans across the world. The staggering attendance demonstrates the enduring appeal of cricket and the excitement the ODI format continues to offer. It has been an event that has not only entertained but also united cricket fans globally in a celebration of the sport.

“ICC events play an important part in growing our game and inspiring the next generation of fans and players around the world. We would like to thank all the fans who contributed to making the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 such a resounding success, and look forward to sharing more thrilling experiences for everyone in future ICC events.”

One of the greatest WC stories ever. The protagonist struggling at the start but finally defeats the villain at the end. 10/10 script.

Terrible world cup where most games were decided at the toss and there were not too many close games. most of them were one sided including the final.

This is actually the least toss dependent World Cup in history.
No it is not. Let us compare the stats of evenly matches teams and win/loss ratio after winning hte toss. Even Wasim Akram and Misbah were concerned that the toss decided all of the games here.

In the final too the same theme played out. the dew factor basically ruined it for teams bowling second.
