"I'd watch Pak bowlers' videos as they were the bowling kings" : Bumrah on learning to bowl yorkers

Jasprit Bumrah reveals how he learnt the art of bowling yorkers

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah opened up about how he started bowling yorkers to Vikram Sathaye in an episode of his video series, "What The Duck" . The Gujarat pacer admitted that he used to watch the videos of Pakistani bowlers and as a kid, he thought that yorker is the only option to take a wicket.

So, he used to try and hit the base of the wall in his house and that's how he started to learn the art of bowling yorkers.

When asked about "did he do a lot of practice, focus, mental strength like the great Wasim Akram used to do for bowling yorker?", Bumrah said, "no, I didn't do any of these things. I started my cricket by watching television. I used to watch cricket throughout the day, all the time. What I used to do is, I used to watch their (Pakistan bowlers) videos because they were the bowling kings at that time. So I used to think that they are getting wickets on yorkers. So I always thought as a kid that if I have to take wickets then yorker is the only option."

"When you are a kid, you cannot always go out and play. So during the hot afternoons, we had a big hall. What I used to do there is, I will try and hit the base of the wall. If you bowl there, there won't be any noise and you can play for a longer period of time. This is because, if you make noise, your mother will come out and you will get bashed. So the basic convenient way was to do that. So then I started to do that and then I started to play with a tennis ball and a rubber ball. So this is how I bowled and this is the only thing which I know. So I started to do that," he added.

Yet it's such a shame that some of the current Pakistani pace bowlers cannot learn from the Pakistani greats yet bowlers from other countries can.

Couldn't agree more. Seems like the art of bowling yorkers is lost upon our Pakistani fast bowlers (Hassan Ali aside).

-Amir has (or had) a great yorker (Remember Sharma's / Rahane's wicket in Asia Cup in 2016?)
-Sohail Khan - no yorkers
-Wahab - few yorkers, but the non-yorkers rocket away for 4 or 6 by batsman
-Junaid - good yorkers by him vs SL in CT

Azhar Mahmood spoke about Yorkers in one of his latest interview with PP but i don't see it being implemented in live games.

Why pakistani bowlers are now bowling yorkers? Since Guldozer of '09 nobody in pakistan have tried bowling yorkers.

I think Waqar wanted his legacy to be alive so he didn't teach the yorkers!

Yorkers just don't exist anymore, perfect yorkers are harder to execute by anyone.

Batsmen are coming out of their crease and turning them into low full tosses and smashing them, even easier to play yorkers with heavy bats.

I dunno why you say that. Virtually all Pakistani fast bowlers of the past 15 years have idolized Wasim and Waqar and given them credit in some capacity for helping them along

I don't think you watched last CT. Amir, Junaid, and even Rumman were nasty with their reverse-swing yorkers.

Junaid has the meanest reverse swinging yorkers among the Pakistani Pacers at the moment. This bloke literally can bowl a perfect 6 out of 6 set of yorkers without fail.

Junaid and Yorkers? Never saw him bowl one.

His Yorkers is the sole reason why Pakistan is the only Asian side that has beaten SA in a bilateral series in their own home. You need proper game highlights to see how he has this insane ability of bowl yorkers almost one after the other ~ and they tail in and reverse as well, something blokes bowling yorkers can't do to save their lives.
