If Mickey Arthur goes after the World Cup, should Grant Flower and Azhar Mahmood also follow?

Mickey will likely be shown the door if Pakistan performs poorly at the World Cup. What about Grant Flower and Azhar Mahmood?

Grant Flower has been around for a good 5-6 years. Results have been mixed. Azhar has been around for just three years but the results aren't sparkling.

Thoughts?

Certainly. Would love to see the back of Azhar Mahmood, useless.

Yes. New HC should have his pick of assistants. Grant Flower was imposed on Mickey.

Flower should stay. We've see improvement with a bunch of our younger batsmen. Mickey should be told to tone down his obsession with fitness and focus more on the cricketing skills of his players.

I don't want another big culling after the world cup. Everyone should simply be on the same page.

I think both Azhar and Grant have had mixed results with the team. However, just like every organisation, rotation in the staff leads to a healthy working culture where new ideas can be brought in to the setup. I would ideally want to see atleast one of the following happen:

1. Batting coach: Bring in someone who was technically good but able to play the big shots. Someone like Sangakarra (realistically might not be possible) or even a former Indian batsman (not sure if they would allow it).

2. Bowling coach: I know what I don't want, the likes of Shoaib or Mohammad Akram anywhere near the setup. Why can't we get someone who can treat bowling like an art. I see so many knowledgable posters here on PP who discuss the nuances of fast bowling which I am pretty sure someone like Shoaib would not even know.

We can also try out bringing 2 batting coaches to complement each other (a far-fetched idea but who knows it might work): 1 who has had a solid technique and 1 who has had a great hitting technique (Abdul Razzak maybe?)

Grant Flowers performance isn't mixed. It's horrible. No coach has done less to stay on for so long.

Grant flower is garbage! I remember way back in May 2014 when he got appointed being annoyed at it, and i was right... huge dissapointment. He must go

And we shouldn't have a foreign coach. They won't know urdu, how will they speak to our players effectively? I want a Pakistani coach.

I don't think we have a Pakistani batting coach who can help the guys prep up with a solid technique as well as the art of hitting big when needed. Can you think of anyone?

I am not a fan of Grant but atleast during his tenure, we suddenly have a few promising openers which is something we have struggled with since Saeed/Aamir combo. Surely we can cut him some slack there. Either ways, he has to go after the world cup though.

Azhar should go immediately, before anyone else.

Grant has been getting free pay checks for a long time too.

Mickey's going obviously, won't reach semifinal with this team.

I do believe unless team wins the cup (or at least make the final), there is going to be a massive change over.

Mickey is the softest target - so he’ll loose his job immediately (rather being sacked, they won’t renew his contract), Grant will go with him as well. Next in line is Sarfraz, which is more or less logical - he shouldn’t be backed for 2023 WC, so next Captain should get maximum time. Azhar might buy some time for his strong lobbying (without that, at first he shouldn’t have got the job). Only guy who is likely to hold on to his job is the CS - the guy who needs to be booted first, so obviously he is likely to last longest.

If this team makes the final, then all 5 needs to be trusted for at least next 45 months (till next WC), no doubt.

The main culprit Inzi will be there for another 5+ years even if we loose all the matches. Others will loose the job for sure except Azhar.

Same comment as in the Inzi thread I made

Is there an appetite for 'good also rans' when it comes to Pakistan's performance in the World Cup - if so, they will all survive

If Pakistan wins the World Cup, no one is going anywhere.

Maybe if the coaches were given better players to work with, they would produce better results? Abid Ali is 31 but he looks like he's got better technique than most of our TTFs. I always used to feel that the charge of nepotism and sifarish were overblown, but it seems ridiculous that we have potentially decent batsmen who never get a fair chance.

What were the credentials of Grant Flower and Azhar Mehmood to start with? What did they achieve with any of the county teams or any team for that matter as a coach which resulted in them getting selected as national coaches for Pakistan.

Also Mickey Arthur was sacked very early in his last stint for Aus and other than SA where he knew the culture and systems well, he hasnt achieved much success in his career as a coach. Dont remember even any domestic teams or T20 leagues teams winning under him.

Obviously the new guy should be able to choose his backroom staff.

I think someone like Mahela Jayawardene would be excellent as a batting coach. He knows the Asian mindset, how to bat in Asian conditions and he's played about a million matches against Pakistan so he'll know our batsmen strengths and weaknesses.

Which Pakistani players/admin/coach career with Pak international setup is over after the World Cup

1. Inzamam ul haq
2. Mickey Arthur
3. Azhar Mahmood
4. Shoaib Malik
5. Mohammad Hafeez
6. Sarfraz Ahmad

Malik and Hafeez will definitely be gone. Not sure about Sarfraz. Azhar Mahmood will probably remain in the shadows as bowlers will give few decent performances, etc. Mickey might go because of public outcry and horrible showing but Inzi also seems unlikely.

Mickey Arthur is in trouble if things go this way all the time.

No coach can do anything if you keep giving them the players like Malik, Imam, Yasir.....

Selectors need to go well before the coaches!
