If there is a two tiered system in ODIs, which tier would you put Pakistan in?

I always wondered this. the upper tier here IND,AUS,NZ,SA,ENG are way clearly ahead then the rest of the field and deserve to be in the upper tier

the lower tier consists of SL,BD,WI,ZIM, AFG and IRE. they are clearly way behind than the upper tier.

but where do you put Pakistan in?..Pakistan dont look as strong as the Upper tier teams. but Pakistan is stronger than the Lower tier teams.
SL which is one of the stronger lower tier teams was demolished by PAK. and even though PAK haven't played BD the other strong Lower tier team, seeing how SL is handling BD in BD we can safely assume that BD is on the same strength as SL if not weak.

PAK's champions trophy win also gives them great reasons not to be included in the lower tier

So where do you put Pakistan if there were two tiers in ODI league? I say if there was a two tier odi league today I would have put Pakistan in the upper tier. PAK might have been the weakest upper tier team but PAK is little bit stronger to be in the lower tier

I'd put Pakistan in the upper tier, we struggled in new zealand, most teams do. And, a lot of teams don't do well away. We are the most capable of beating IND, AUS, NZ, SA and ENG, whereas the other lower tier teams you mentioned will struggle more. In ODIs, we would beat all those weaker teams with not much trouble, suggesting we'd be playing in a league below where we should be.

Why the wrist slitting and crying? Why the urge to put down the team every time?

Just wait till the world cup and then see the same boys perform like Tigers. Don't bother about stupid bi-laterals.

Here is rating points for all teams in ODI.

1 South Africa 120
2 India 119
3 England 116
4 New Zealand 115
5 Australia 113

6 Pakistan 96
7 Bangladesh 92
8 Sri Lanka 83
9 West Indies 76

5 top teams are in 113-120 ratings.
17 points gap
Bottom 5 teams are in 96-76 ratings.

And this is why you guys haven't won an ODI trophy in years.

Pakistan will be the first team to be placed in the top-tier due to them being the Champions Trophy winners. Can you imagine Germany or Portugal's place in the upper echelons of soccer being questioned a few months after their respective tournament wins?

Just stats and rankings again and again and again

One of the reasons why Saffers havent seen glory in world tournaments is that you guys are too mechanical in planning, mindset and approach to the game which is mostly about being dynamic and showcasing flair. You guys would look at numbers and stats but Cricket is way more than that. Unfortunately the guys who run the show are only a sub set of the south african cricket fans who are also mechanical.

Why not discuss the massive gap between top 5 and bottom 5? It's far easier to start talking about posters or SA cricket, eh?

OP asked a simple question and I think to be in top tier you have to win consistently. Winning CT didn't make WI a top tier and it's not making Pakistan a top tier as well.

Yes, winning a world tournament makes a team a top team. This nonsense about ratings points is just that, nonsense.

Very few fans considered WI a top tier ODI team after winning CT. Now WC will be another matter. It propelled SL as a top tier, but they were very consistent in that period as well.

Pakistan does have ingredient for top tier, but needs few adjustments. Pakistan still needs to perform consistently.

Pakistan are ranked 6 and hence not a top team just like WI are not. Both have won icc tournaments in last 2 years.

That's the point of this thread. Pakistan is in a weird position right now where it's considerably stronger than Bangladesh/Sri Lanka but considerably weaker than the top four teams. Proved by the fact that it can beat any of the top four teams, home or away, while Sri Lanka or Bangladesh just cannot compete.

Agree with that. Pakistan is surely a higher profile team than the likes of BD/SL etc. Pakistan has proven that. I think top tier or not will depend on who is saying it and how they see it. I think top tier means winning consistently. I do think Pakistan needs few adjustment and get rid of older players to win consistently. Winning CT was due to some new players , mainly Ali, doing very well.

Windies were a top team when they won the CT. It's been years since that happened and they've only gotten worse so it makes no sense to them bring them up now. Similarly, when Pakistan won in '92, they were automatically a top ODI team. Same with India in whatever year they first won it. Or Lanka's WC win in '96.

Cricket isn't like soccer man. In Soccer, international games are pretty much meaningless accept the world cup whereas in Cricket that is not the case.

Soccer rankings are useless whereas Cricket rankings are like Chess ranking.

So, since BD went to Semi, it is better team than both NZ and Aus?

That is because of what fans give attention to.

No, because they did not win it.

Tier one is England, India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

Pakistan is not in that league.

We will have a tier of our own.... sort of like a gate-keeper or chowkidaar for both tiers :yk

If you want to go from lower to upper tier you gotta go through Pakistan, if you want to stay in the upper tier and not fall in the lower you gotta beat Pakistan.

People care about the chumpions trophy?

Pakistan would be like that team that gets promoted and relegated every season.

So one season we would be in the top tier, another season in the second.

Hilarious comments. You made my day with this.
