"I'm not available for the Pakistan leg of the PSL, it's been a long winter for me" : Eoin Morgan

SHARJAH: England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan Wednesday reckoned Pakistan was moving in the right direction in terms of reviving cricket in the country, hoping more betterment in the next couple of years.

Morgan joined Karachi Kings and will lead the team in the absence of regular skipper Imad Wasim who injured himself in the match against Lahore on Sunday and remained under observation for concussion.

“I certainly think that steps in that direction have been taken. The last year’s PSL final, I believe, was a success and all the players who traveled thoroughly enjoyed their time,” said Morgan.

Pakistan had been a “no go” area for international teams since March 2009 attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus which suspended all international cricket in the country.

But last year’s PSL final in Lahore paved way for three Twenty20 internationals against a World XI and a single Twenty20 international with Sri Lanka.

This year’s PSL will have two play-offs in Lahore and the final in Karachi on March 25, followed by three Twenty20 internationals against the West Indies in April.

Morgan praised more efforts taken by Pakistan Cricket Board of staging two play-offs in Lahore and final in Karachi means more progress.

“I am sure the people of Pakistan really enjoyed that cricket back in their country. More steps are taken this year, we saw international games played there. This year more PSL games will be played there so over the course of couple of years more progress will be made. West Indies is touring there in April for three Twenty20 so naturally there is a progression moving forward,” remarked Morgan.

Morgan said he was unavailable for the Pakistan leg of matches.

“I am not available for the Pakistan leg. Its been a long winter for me I have been away since December so unfortunately I am unavailable,” said Morgan who led England to 3-2 one-day series win over New Zealand earlier this month.

When asked about Karachi Kings captain Imad Wasim’s injury, Morgan termed the incident infortunate but said Imad is on the path to recovery.

“I was in the flight when the incident happened. Imad injured himself, its unfortunate that he is unable to play in a few matches but he has recovered well,” said Morgan of Imad.

Morgan, who will lead the team in Imad’s absence said he will try his best to help Karachi Kings, which needs to win one of their two matches to qualify for the play-offs.

“I have been watching the PSL in New Zealand. I know the place quite nicely. We have a good mix of players with Babar Azam and others, its always interesting and challenging. We will sit down tonight and settle the right combination. Its an exciting challenge, with a lot of teams playing for last four. Islamabad leads the table and they have been playing good cricket, ” concluded Morgan.

PCB hardly had any decent overseas players to pick as there is lots of international cricket going on at the moment. Going to Pakistan is a personal choice, I don't think PCB or the franchise enforced that as a part of the contract prior to signing up the players. These players are well within their rights to choose not to go. PCB needs to make sure they only sign players who agree to travel to Pakistan and this needs to be in the player contract. Only then they will get foreign players playing in PSL who will not abandon the league in the middle. I won't blame the players as they are only playing in these leagues for money, these are not their home teams for them to show any sort of loyalty. As an employer PCB and the franchises should set the rules, if you haven't you can't blame the employees.

The owners of KK knnew what they were getting into when they picked Morgan. And to be fair to them, they could not have foreseen that they would already have qualified at this stage. But since they have, I can't see any benefit in playing him in the remaining games.

Well, they just made him stand-in captain

What was the management even thinking for allowing a player to join for 2 games only? What is even the point of that...

It is not legal to put such a clause in a contract, otherwise PCB would have exploited it long ago.

Feeling pity for Pakistani brothers.
Those players who have decided to skip PSL matches in Pakistan should not be allow to play in the league.
They are insulting PSL by leaving it midway.

Does he not know that the statement makes him look like an idiot

I mean, everyone can tell you just don't want to come to Pakistan.

Stop making excuses, be a man, and say the truth! PCB should make a clause from next year to only sign players that are willing to play in Pakistan.

I completely respect his right to not come, but he is having a laugh if he thinks anyone is getting fooled by this rubbish about long winter

Okay in that case they can just ignore the people who do not want to travel to Pakistan. I can't really believe that Pietersen, Watson, Morgan et all told PCB that they would go to Pakistan and then suddenly changed their mind. I don't think they will do that. They would have informed PCB well ahead and still the franchises decided to sign them. So probably inform to all players who decide to put themselves ahead for the draft that if they are not travelling to Pakistan, they will not be considered.

Cant force players to come to Pakistan but the players are being exposed here. Previously they had justified reasons to demand that the PCB and the Pakistani govt, security agencies prove they can provide security to foreign players. Well the PCB has successfully done that in 2015, hosting the PSL final in 2017, World Eleven tour, Sri Lanka T-20 match.

To dastakhat kyu kiya contract pe? Mazaak ho raha hai kya.

He has every right to not come to Pakistan, but he needs to be honest and upfront about it. This has to be right up there with the worst excuses that I have ever come across. Should have taken a leaf out of Pietersen's book.

i dont think so but i know why you feel this way now because we are in a middle of tournament and yes it does looks insulting and give a wrong message to the world.
but you and i should know this was already predicted as the same was the case in previous editions so nothing new here.
players from country like zimbabwe and other low salary country will.be lured as they wont get this money anywer else but big players wont like to risk anything for couple of matches as there are soo so many league's going around .

yup he is fit enough to come all the way from new Zealand to play couple of matches in uae but not fit enough to travel for couple more hours for pakistan.
its like someone saying he is full but wont mind having some desserts but no place for roti .

He should be honest about it, most people will understand.

This excuse sounds so patronising, we all know the real reason.

Pathetic reasoning. Luckily most fans are intelligent enough to know why he doesn't want to travel to Pakistan. Shouldn't have been selected if he had no interest in playing in Pakistan especially as he is only avaliable for 2 games in the UAE.

What long winter? Did he play the Ashes? What a rubbish excuse. Just be honest like the rest and there should not be any problems.

Na it’s not that deep, players have every right to choose if they want to come to Pakistan or not. However, though it is annoying for fans it’s better if the players that are comfortable come to Pakistan, you can’t force the rest.

in lahori accent "te paai jaan dhoti kasso teh uthay hi beh jaao, mehrbaani..."

in karachiete tone "satyaa geya hai jo phir idhar aanay ki soch riya hai..."

Reminds me of a classmate's excuse to not take a test he had missed because "he had to spend quality time with his family" for 20 minutes. Hope this clown gets a mauling in the 2019' WC.

Should have made Babar the captain. Morgan shouldn't have had extended rest by not coming here for the 2 matches.

Nonsense from Morgan

He isn't in the test side first of all. Also what is the purpose of traveling all the way to UAE to play two dead rubbers?

To make quick $$$, do some shopping in Dubai and head back home to enjoy with family and friends :sanga

Appointing Eoin Morgan captain for two days is such a stupid decision. Wouldn't know players. Won't know who to use and when. Bopara would have been a brilliant choice.

Totally don't get the logic in that, a player has come for 2 games just to go back home and you made him captain? Seriously what the hell?

It was Morgan vs Sammy today. Darren won.

Morgan was poor in his captaincy. Okay at the start, but poor in the middle and end. He let Amir and Shinwari bowl 4 at the the death instead of bringing one if them in the middle. When PZ had momentum from hitting Afridi he should've brought them on. Instead bowls Bopara and Irfan Jr. Then his batting he wasted an over and got out.

Sammy was good. Finished the innings well and put the total out of reach. And bowled Hasan Ali and Wahab in middle overs while Sameen was in beginning and Umaid at end. Middle overs are most important because that is where momentum is made. Brilliant captaincy.

One guy loves Pakistan and the other doesn't care. Easy to see who is which.

PCB shoots themselves on their feet and often makes themselves laughing stock. There was absolutely no need to include this "gold digger" for 2 games, that too dropping the guy hitting a dominant 50 in last game - on top of that, they made him Captain :(

I am not sure if people in charge do realize that now instead of promoting PAK cricket, these people are defaming it more?

PCB is hungry for publicity and goodwill, and I do not think we can blame them. Considering the fact that they are not able to get their hands on the top players, they have to make do with anything that comes their way. They are not spoilt for choice.

What PCB is doing is wrong.

You're just trying to make Sethi look good here. Thought you were an objective poster. Guess I was wrong...

Sethi has his hands tied. He is not a man without faults, but he cannot do more with the PSL consider the constraints and the handicap that Pakistan cricket has, i.e. no cricket at home, poor image, not enough money etc.

Playing Morgan for two games can even result in two losses for KK and knock them out. And if that's worth "publicity," "good image," then so be it.

We all know that these people with power seem to have "good image" to those who are ignorant. :trump2

That's all they care about.

Yes Eoin we believe you ;)

Long winter really - will a couple of more matches make a big difference to your fatigue?

Blame is on KK, why would you replace your regular captain with this guy for two matches, when he has refused to play in PAK.

He'd have probably landed there on the way back from New Zealand anyway.

Will he get full pay? just confused whether those players who are busy because of national duty and join late are paid full amount or after adjustment?

Why can't he just say it?

This makes him look worse in the eyes of PSL fans

Do you think Morgan cares about what PSL fans or any fan thinks about this PSL move.

Morgan is successful LOI captain who recently won tough LOI series in AUS and NZ, he is set for good long holiday with family and friends.

Also Morgan will collect extra $$ on the way back home to buy some gifts to loved ones from playing 2 games in PSL :sanga

No,he’ll get payed for the number of matches he was available for selection.

He was selected as supplementart player
So he gets for amount of games he plays.

Lol at successful captain. Complete choker who gets exposed when it all matters. :kohli

Pak lost 5-0 to same NZ team which ENG beat 3-2 (Rosco was missing in decider unfortunately, still ENG was the better team).

Also Eng beaten World Champions AUS at home prior to NZ series, credit needs to be given where it's due.

Everyone (Me too) is sceptical about Eng performance in knockout stages of world events.

Let's see how he does in WC'19 !

We all know the reason he isn't going is because he doesn't want to go to Pakistan. I have no problem with that. But he should just be honest instead of excuses like "it's been a long summer"

You mean 2 of 6 balls.

He is allowing PCB to sell his brand value - English Captain, playing in PSL ...... That's a status symbol, you know.

Pretty underwhelming so far from Morgan. I would be surprised if he gets selected by any team next year - even if he is available for more than two games. He struggles on Asian-type wickets, lacks the charisma to attract sponsors and appears to have no real interest in the league beyond money.

He should have just been honest and said he's not going to Pakistan due to security concerns instead of this fatigue nonsense.

why did these player even bothered coming at all
and also do these players who just came for 2 3 games get full payment or its per game basis?

How could he say it with a straight face is beyond me :))

I mean KP is being a straight shooter. Fans would have been less annoyed if Morgan simply told what's blatantly obvious.

Roy, Hales and Morgan were selected as supplementary players so they will get payment as per they play

think he saw the writing on the wall!

Goodbye Mr Morgan.

I wonder how much each of his runs cost Karachi Kings?

Morgan's comments at today's presser:

"I wish KK the best of luck, I've enjoyed the week that I've been here, it's been a pleasure playing. I thoroughly enjoyed my time last year as well in PSL."

"Captaincy is difficult regardless of when you take over. It's a difficult challenge but one that's worth taking on. With the talent we have, it's actually quite enjoyable"

Well that was the shortest visit for any player in a T20 league, unless an injury was involved. Not sure why Morgan even made the trip. Should have just told PCB that he wasn't up to it and should have stayed back home.

Why would you say no to few extra bucks?

Why would you say no to few extra bucks?

This is most ridiculous way of earning extra bucks. PCB/Franchise should have told him not to bother to be honest. He added nothing to the franchise during the visit except for being one of the high profile players drafted for PSL.

Goodbye and good riddance. The only thing worse than players who rock up for a couple of games and add nothing to their team are players who make pathetic excuses abot their winter being too long.

Someone should really ask him that if the final was staged in the UAE, would he have stayed for longer? If the answer is yes, then his winter wasn't as long as he claimed it to be, and if he would still skip it, then he clearly doesn't care about his team and should not be asked to play again in the PSL.

Speaking of long winters, doesn't his agent plan his workload and how long his winter is before he sets out for these stints? Could he not pass over a stint in the PSL since he knew how much burnt out he would be at this stage?

Maybe he should move to the middle east. Winters don't last as long I believe.

Lol probably the worst selection this PSL, 3 tail ender scores, and to think they made this guy captain when he wasn't touring. They're quite lucky he's not touring in fact.

Waste of space

Good riddance

Eventhough KP isnt performing either but atleast he is a good influence in the dressing room and inspires others so overall there is a positive net contribution

Morgan rues poor show by Karachi Kings in qualifier

DUBAI: Karachi Kings were torn apart by a tornado called Luke Ronchi, which encapsulated their abject surrender to Islamabad United in the qualifier fixture of the HBL Pakistan Super League here on Sunday night.

Ronchi, the retired international who represented both Australia and New Zealand, rode his luck not once but thrice in an unbelievable mode of total aggression to close out the UAE leg in a blaze of exhilarating entertainment at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium as Islamabad stormed to their second final in a canter by a handsome eight-wicket margin and with an incredible 45 deliveries to spare — largest in terms of balls in the PSL history.

And given the magnitude of this match with a final spot in Karachi at stake, the turnout yet again highlighted the lack of full house in this edition. Once Karachi had been restricted to 154-4 — a score which was built around Joe Denly and Colin Ingram — after Eoin Morgan decided to bat first in his last outing this edition.

“I thought we batted okay but didn’t bat at our best and couldn’t get a competitive total on the board to stay in the game,” Morgan said at the post-match media conference.

“It wasn’t definitely a match-winning score with something to bowl at. I don’t think we started well with the ball and allowed Luke Ronchi to play in his aggressive manner and let him take the game from us and once he’s in that mood, he was hard to stop. We didn’t take the chances coming our way particularly when a side comes as hard as Islamabad did tonight.”

Mohammad Sami, one of the usual suspects returning in the playing XI along with stand-in skipper J.P. Duminy and man-of-the-match Ronchi after being ‘rested’ in Friday night’s final league game in Sharjah, put Karachi under pressure upfront with the wickets of Khurram Manzoor and Babar Azam in three balls.

Denly (51 off 46 deliveries, four boundaries and one six) and Ingram, who finished undefeated on a 39-ball 68 (six sixes and one four) raised hopes in the Karachi camp somewhat by putting together a much-needed partnership of 82 in 57 balls.

But their collective teamwork remained horribly inadequate when Ronchi launched himself with the white Kookaburra ball flying in all directions of this spacious stadium to warm up a chilly night.

The wicket-keeper/batsman sailed brought up the quickest PSL half-century in just 19 deliveries and went on to a hurricane 94 from 39 balls with 78 runs coming in the shape of 12 fours and five sixes, while overtaking Kamran Akmal (347) at the top of tournament’s batting chart by extending his tally to 383 with his fourth half-century in debut PSL season.

Sahibzada Farhan, replacing the injured Islamabad skipper Misbah-ul-Haq in the line-up, played his role to perfection in the swashbuckling opening stand of 91 before slicing a catch to Shahid Afridi at cover after striking three sixes in an 18-ball 29.

Ronchi admitted afterwards the shoddy catching didn’t matter much to him. “It was one of those occasions when I felt comfortable with my job and was in the zone to play big shots. Luck was on my side and when you play the way I do you need luck to back your instincts.”

Duminy, meanwhile, played glowing tribute to his match-winners, Sami and Ronchi.

“It was one of those clinical performances, I guess. Ronchi’s knock was among top three innings I have ever seen. Sami was amazing and the guy is still fit enough to play international cricket.”

Afridi cut a forlorn figure and was clearly hampered by a knee injury as highlighted by former Pakistan skipper’s gingerly movement while bowling his three overs. While Karachi need his inspiration in Wednesday’s second eliminator to keep alive their aspirations of playing at the National Stadium, Islamabad have secured a week’s break until the title-decider.
