Australian batsman Steve Smith is channeling mercurial Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi in a bid to revamp his neglected bowling career.

Smith claimed 2-19 from three overs, in addition to a 44-ball knock of 63, in Barbados's thrilling two-wicket win over Jamaica in the Caribbean Premier League today.

His performance won him man-of-the-match honours, but it was his leg-spin that generated the most attention as he removed both Jamaica openers Johnson Charles and Glenn Phillips in the space of five balls.

And he could have had a third if a catch on the boundary was taken. Ultimately, it did not cost the Tridents, who defended 3-154 in a tense finish on American soil in Florida.

When asked about his match-turning spell, Smith said it was "heyday stuff" and that at the ripe old age of 29, he's had to rethink how he bowls the leggies that saw him break into Australia's Test team eight years ago.

"I've changed a few things – I'm trying to base my action off Shahid Afridi actually, and try and bowl quite fast and into the wicket," Smith told the host broadcaster after play.

"There wasn't a heap of bounce on this wicket so you could almost hit that back-of-a-length and make them go across the line.

"Fortunately, it worked tonight."

When asked why he chose Afridi, the ace leg-spinner who claimed 541 international wickets in career that's spanned more than two decades, Smith said: "Why not? The bloke's played for a long time. He's been a terrific leg-spinner.

"As I'm getting a bit older I can't walk in anymore and bowl as fast as I need to, so I've got a bit more momentum through my run-up so I can get the ball down a bit quicker, otherwise it just goes miles.

"So yeah, change it up and it works."

Smith made his Test debut in 2010 as a blond-haired leg-spinner, batting at No.8 at Lord's against Pakistan, who were captained by Afridi.

He's claimed 61 international wickets, but in recent years has been reluctant to bowl himself.

In a move that's proven to be inconceivably productive, Smith put his leg-spinners to one side a few years into his Test career to focus solely on his batting, which history will show was an incredibly wise decision.

Smith, at the time of writing, is the No.1 Test batsman in the world and has broken dozens of batting records, with only the feats of Sir Donald Bradman stopping him from claiming more.

But with 12 months to tinker with his game as he sits out from international and Australian domestic cricket for his involvement in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal, perhaps the sight of Smith rolling the arm over in the style of Afridi will become more common.

Smith's Barbados sit fifth on the CPL ladder but have played only three matches, winning two.

The side now returns home for five consecutive matches, with their next fixture set for Saturday against St Kitts.

Imagine thinking he's not the greatest ODI allrounder ever. Kapil who? Sobers who? Imran who?

I think with good intentions like this he’ll be back into the international mix again like he never left.

Any video of his new bowling action? If you say check on youtube i will put you through a stone cold stunner.

Jayasuria is a better player than Afridi in both facets of the game lol. Afridi is overrated as hell and it really cost us for a lot of years.
Jayasuria a legendary batsman who changed the game in the 90s. Afridi on the other hand a better bowler who would occassionaly treat us with his batting class. A bit unfair to compare the two.

Glad to see him back.

Best player in the world and was harshly sidelined for 1 year.

He is my biggest worry in 2019 WC. Even in CT i said Pak's biggest hurdle will be Australia (mainly because of Smith) in knockouts otherwise we will win the cup and luckily we did not have to face Smith.

Ball tampering and Afridi worship?

Honorary Pakistani :salute

Assuming he makes the WC, I can see Smith's bowling being a bit of an X factor in Australia's attack (that is if he improves it enough for it to being useful).

I was surprised to see Smith totally abandoned his bowling. Now he is focusing on bowling leg spin, it will just boost up Australian LOI team, not in test cricket.

Was it him or North we gave a 5 wicket haul to while giving the other 5 wickets to Watson? :)))

Cricket Australia used the L word to describe Afridi on their Facebook page :yk2

That's really gonna sting some posters on PP :msd

Once he has mastered or copied the bowling style of Afridi...next on agenda of Smith is probably to copy Afridi batting style and scoring pattern

To be honest I do miss lala ever so slightly from the team. He would provide the x-factor to any game and he provided so much entertainment, even though he disappointed most of the time with the bat. His bowling at his peak was very good.

Jayasuria was a pretty handy bowler himself. 312 wickets at 36 is no joke. But his batting will always be light years ahead of Afridi simply because of the number of destructive match-winning innings he has played. With Afridi there almost was always a 50/50 chance of success or failure

Or maybe CA is trolling Pak fans.

Considering the fact that their team is balony right now and they have been disgraced from world cricket, the last thing required of them would be to troll one of the most recognizable cricketers worldwide.

True. I remember when Afridi came into the Pakistan side there were talks of making him into a regular opener to get the Jayasuria style aggression up front. Jaysauria was already a legend back then.

Good on Smith for trying to improve his bowling. It is great that Smith and Warner are getting lots of cricket during their ban. It augurs well for Australia when they become available again. Looking at how Australian A side played against India A, it does seem like Australia need these two back in the team to have a crack at winning the WC.

lol Smith reminded me of a worse Afridi when he first came on the scene. How things have changed, don't think I've ever seen a cricketer improve that much, it's unreal.

Greatest opener ever. Still nowhere near Afridi

There are two statements in this post and they contradict each other. You cannot be the greatest and still be "nowhere near" some other player.

He wrote the first statement with mind and second one was straight from the bottom of his heart. :inti

Ah yes - ofcourse - that must be it!

Are they also trolling Aussie fans by clarifying that the 'legend' they are talking about isn't Shane Warne? :inzi

Afridi was a top class bowler, people focus only his batting and thats why they make comparisons that he was lame compared to X or Z, he stayed in the team for a long time due to his bowling only.

Please dont do it Stevie!!!

I love you as a batsman and want you to remain as such when you return rather than be a bits and pieces all rounder

He won't bowl much when he returns to international cricket. Can't wait for his return.

2 overs for 37 runs so far for Smith in today's match.
