New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor today said Indian-origin Hindu Rishi Sunak's becoming the Prime Minister of Britain has lessons for India. Can someone who is not Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist or Jain become PM of India, he asked, building on — and refining — his argument about need to empower “visible minorities”.
He was earlier trolled over the “visible minority” argument on Twitter as people cited his fellow Congress leader Manmohan Singh, a Sikh, having been PM for 10 years. He was also told that Muslims and Sikhs have been President, the Constitutional Head of State, though that's a largely ceremonial role in India.

“Dr Manmohan Singh absolutely does belong to a visible minority. But most Hindus don't see Sikhs as different from themselves,” the former international diplomat argued, speaking to NDTV.

“Can we still imagine a day — in our increasingly majoritarian polity that the BJP is very much behind — when someone who is not a Hindu, Jain or Sikh or Buddhist can head our national government (as PM)?” he added, stressing that the Hindutva ideology sees all religions born in the Indian subcontinent as similar, "Indic" religions. “But they (Hindutva followers) don't see others the same way.”

Stressing that Rishi Sunak has been an overt practitioner of Hinduism, Mr Tharoor recalled how former UK PM Winston Churchill had called Hindus “a beastly people with a beastly religion”.

“Can you imagine an overt Christian or an overt Muslim, public about their faith, being embraced by the BJP as a fit Prime Minister for India?” he said.

India's ruling BJP, which espouses Hindutva or "Hindu nationalism" as its ideology, does not have any Muslim MP.

He recalled “public fulminations” about Sonia Gandhi's Italian and Christian original after she led a Congress alliance to victory and was tipped to be PM. She stepped aside for Manmohan Singh. “One prominent politician threatened to shave her head if she became PM,” he recalled, about BJP's Sushma Swaraj, who went on to become India's foreign minister.

“I believe we need to acknowledge — and I've been a critic of British racism — that they've chosen to anoint as their leader a brown-skinned Hindu after a history of overt racism… They've outgrown their worst attributes,” he said.

Rishi Sunak is “from an ethnicity that Brits in the past would have considered inferior”, Mr Tharoor further added, on the day Mr Sunak was appointed successor to Liz Truss, who had to quit after just six weeks as the UK faces a price-rise crisis.

“I am glad we are celebrating this because I am hoping this will make us reflect on our own country,” Mr Tharoor said, “What we can learn from Rishi Sunak's triumph is that race is certainly a factor but not the only one."

“The BJP is being disingenuous when they claim we've already got to where the British have got to," he added.

"Rishi Sunak's age is also something that the BJP will not talk about. In this I blame not just the BJP but all parties,” he said.

At 42, Rishi Sunak is the youngest UK PM in two centuries.

Noting that Rishi Sunak became finance minister of the UK in 2020, just five years after first becoming MP. “In India he'd still be sporting, at best, a Minister of State tag.”

Mr Tharoor, 66 now, was around 53 years old when he became Minister of State, essentially a junior minister, in Manmohan Singh's cabinet in 2009, serving up to 2014.

Basically Tharoor is cribbing about a religious Abrahamic PM becoming the PM Of India. Sonia Gandhi came close to it. But Congress was on its last legs by then.

Hoping to see a Wahabi or a relative of Pope to lead India in the future. That should make Tharoor happy.

Clutching at straws. I have huge respect for Tharoor, but this argument is ********. Just cherry picking and applying multiple filters to make his statement.

Sonia Gandhi converted, didnt she?

You dont even have to be a Wahhabi, dude. His comment may not have applied 10-15 years ago but these days its very relevant. You cannot have someone who is bearded, perhaps prays 5 times a day and confidently admits to being a Muslim become the PM. Most Indians who have held the highest office were known to be semi religious and not fully practicing Muslims. You guys just need to get it out of your heads that fully practising Muslims are wahhabis or hold a very extreme religious view.
I know tons of Muslims who pray five times a day, and dont have beards and dont overtly try to pass themselves off as mulla types.

If there is a capable person why not? I don’t think Rishi was made PM because he was a practicing Hindu. He was made Pm because people that matter thought he was competent enough to do the job. These idiot politicians make everything about religion. Dumb statement.

While your statement is accurate in the British scheme of things, I dont think you are very correct in its application towards India. I do not think with the current government, you will see a decent practising Muslim who is fully eligible hold the highest office in India

Have you heard of Abdul Kalam?

We have had Muslim presidents, army chiefs from the minority community. Not to mention all the other prominent roles Muslims have held in India. What are you on about?

People vote for Modi or Imran Khan or Trump because they believe in them not because of what there religion is . Why would you then all of a sudden make some one from minority the head of state just to prove a point?

You have a very shallow understanding of how democracy in subcontinent works then or you are arguing for the sake of arguing.

How does the comparison between Sonia Gandhi and Rishi Sunak have any equivalence. Rishi Sunak might be a brown looking man and a Hindu but he is born and brought up in the UK. A citizen of the country since birth.

Sonia Gandhi is from Italy and she has married into an Indian political family.

The equivalence would be between Sonia Gandhi and Akshata Murthy.

It has nothing to do with her religion. In India you can become a PM even if you are born outside of India as long as you are a naturalized citizen unlike USA etc with a caveat.

The caveat is that as long as that same applies in the country of the persons origin before naturalization.

In Italy you can’t be a Pm unless you are born there so that law would apply to Sonia Gandhi even if she is a naturalized Indian citizen. That was the loophole applied to stop her from being PM.

These are political statements just to stir up the pot.

Shashi is just stating the obvious here.

I doubt the British public would have voted for an "overt Hindu".

Rishi is lucky that he is reasonably white washed, has a non threatening name and at least on the outside seems reasonably secular.

If he walked about with a red dot on his head, quoted hindu scriptures and referred to hindu gods in his day to day speech and was named Raamveshwar with a huge Hindu surname then its unlikely the British public would be so comfortable with him ( remember we haven;t actually voted him in yet)

The Indian public would similarly not vote an 'Overt' Muslim PM who doesn't share the same values as them, look like them, or share the same culture, no matter how good he was.

Yogi could become PM but a Maulana is unlikely....and that's just human nature.

No main stream party in India will have a Muslim or Christian candidate as a PM. Who is Shashi blaming here? His own party is scared to align with Muslim causes for the fear of being called appeasers again It could happen in the future if there is a mainstream Muslim party winning a bunch of seats and is in coalition with Congress as a third front. We are probably decades away from that scenario.

Speaking to the NDTV...samjha karo. He need to pander to certain audiences, few of them can be found here as well. Surprising it is coming from Tharoor though who is otherwise a sensible person.

India had a Sikh PM, muslim president, muslim vice president and now a dalit president. It is the beauty of Indian democracy that we accept people at the top post without any prejudice.

I live in the UK and knows this Sunak case very well. He should have been PM straight after Boris. But the only reason Liz beats him bcoz she is blonde and has got white skin. But as they say, colour of your skin cant hide your intellect and Liz Truss got exposed within minutes. The only reason she survived 45 days bcoz 10 days in between country was in mourning due to Queen's death. United Kingdom had no alternative but to appoint Rishi Sunak. They have done it not due to their acceptability but due to lack of choice. One should just read the comments section in BBC/SKY/Telegraph etc and you will find it is filled it racism on Rishi.

Also, in UK & USA, head of the state has to get involved in many church activities. So they have to be Christian by faith. In UK, since King Charles is head of the state, they can afford to have a hindu PM. Why don't Mr. Tharoor talks about it for his beloved NDTV viewers? Imagine there is any such rule that Indian head of state has to be hindu only...lol..these people will then lose their mind. Remember how much heart burn it caused to these liberals when Modi was involved in Ayodhya Ram temple puja?

Will they allow a hindu CM in Jammu & Kashmir? Will Tharoor speaks about it?

It is so easy to expose these guys :))

The title of this thread by MIG is slightly misleading. Shashi is criticising the BJP here, not the country.

But Tharoor is exaggerating here. Rishi Sunak is not an 'overt' Hindu. Nor does he hide his religion. He is that ideal blend where he thinks his religion is not relevant to his role as PM.

Well said, Rajdeep.

I thought Tharoor was better than this. He is suave and at least in his interviews, comes across as a level headed person free of hypocrisy.

So sad to see that a person like him has joined the hypocritical, India-bashing, leftist brigade.
