Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez take Pakistan to a five-wicket win in first ODI against South Africa

Pakistan have lost 9 out of its last 12 ODIs against the top sides. This ratio will not change in the future, so I don’t see much purpose in celebrating these one-off wins.

You don’t even want to celebrate a ‘one off win’, are you watching cricket for fun or is there another reason?

Well played Imam & MoHa - deserves praises. Who is MoM - my pick will be Shadab; bowled brilliantly, fielded brilliantly & took the winning shot. He & Hasan reduced target by at least 35.

Yess was flighting it up sow ell today. But for me Sarfaraz deserves it for allowing opportunity to him to do well with the ball and bat.

Does consistently being negative make you feel good?

Amla lost SA this game. Good win for Pakistan.

Masood, SSA, Amir and Talat are the players that need to be brought in.

Hafeez is only limited by his lack of mental strength. He's a nervous starter and despite playing so much cricket, can't seem create that belief in him.

These kind of innings tell you that there's no shortage of skill and talent in the man.

Always loved Sarfaraz's passion but his batting is becoming a liability more than anything to be honest.

He should promote Imad or even Faheem ahead of him.

If he is our captain for the world cup so I will obviously support him.

Good win... well planned game. Felt SA weren’t upto the task n didn’t apply pressure. Faf seemed clueless...

South Africa are not a top odi side recent history
Pak have beaten sa alot in odis recently I think it's either 4/5 Or 5/6 So what's the excuse you have for that sir??

Him choosing opening the batting was his worst career move. Could have achieved a lot more as a middle order player.

Well done Pakistan. Huffed and puffed a bit at the end, but this was still a clinical chase.

Imam deserved a 100.

I think so. Because with that attitude, losses are much easier to cope with. You set yourself up with a 'I knew this would happen' attitude.

People who are often attached a little too much to something take this route.

Hashim bhai's hundred made sure South Africa scored less runs but lost fewer wickets.
Moral victory for South Africa!

So u don't have the heart to take a loss?

This chase felt a lot like the one against Afghanistan in Asia Cup. Had the victory been more convincing, Pakistan could've carried the momentum onto the next matches like in the Champions Trophy.

Not everyone does. There are emotional people who don't want to put themselves through it. It's called coping mechanism.

Ok mate.
But Pakistan has won so enjoy the victory.
Go into your negative mode in the 2nd odi

That was against Afg.
This is against Sa.
There is a major difference

I was replying to shahidafridi123 's question that was directed at someone else :) I was not taking about myself.

I, myself, am jubilant at this victory!

Pak were always in winnin gposition despite few charitable wickets as usual to create a little bit drama. Imam Hafeez and Shadab played really well. Shadab continued devolpment is comendable, he played ideal nerveless inning and ran well. Lol at those who think Imad is better, as a big hitter yes but you do not always need just big hitting.

Haysman - you looked nervous in the balcony there in the end stage of the match.

Sarfraz - yea I'm always like that.

Haysman - So we'll see more in durban?

Sarfraz - Inshallah. Thank You

I literally lol'd at that :))) oh Safy, you can't get anything right these days!

And some people here have the nerves to question Hafeez’s ability. If it weren’t for Hafeez we wouldn’t have crossed the finish line. Hafeez is the only hope we have for winning World Cup.

lol i think saeed ajmal had the funniest interviews

and breathe...

you can only hope that pakistan make the necesary changes for the next game, drop imad, drop shinwari and play amir and shaheen, wanted shan to play but that is now unlikely to happen.

LOL!! Pak is now officially SA's bogey team. He should relax.

The error that South Africa made with the bat that all the their top 3 players played anchor roles. Hendricks, Russen, Amla.

PAKISTAN EDGE PROTEAS IN ODI SERIES OPENER

Saturday, 19 January 2019

MOHAMMED HAFEEZ provided the top-order experience that Pakistan had lacked in the Test series to get his side over the line for a five-wicket victory over the Standard Bank Proteas with five balls to spare in the opening Momentum One-Day International at St. George’s Park on Saturday.

The experience of the Momentum Man of the Match was there for all to see as his unbeaten 71 off 63 balls (8 fours and 2 sixes) got his side over the line and made sure there would be no 11th hour stumble.

The other key batting contributions for Pakistan came from Imam-ul-Haq (86 off 101 balls, 5 fours and 2 sixes) and Babar Azam (49 off 69 balls, 5 fours) who put on 94 for the second wicket to lay the foundation for victory.

Other important contributions came on the bowling front from Hasan Ali (1/42) and Shadab Khan (1/41) who had the most economical bowling figures in the match and tied down the Proteas batsmen at critical times.

The Proteas total of 266/2 on the back of a 155-run second wicket partnership between Hashim Amla and new cap Rassie van der Dussen always looked a little bit below par and so it turned out to be.

Amla put his barren 2018 ODI year behind him with his 27th century in this format (108 not out off 120 balls, 7 fours and 1 six). It was his first century at this venue and his third against Pakistan which tied the South African record against these opponents of AB de Villiers.

Van der Dussen made South Africa’s fourth highest ODI score on debut (93 off 101 balls, 3 fours and 3 sixes) and had every reason to feel happy about his first performance.

The other debutant, Duanne Olivier, turned in a mixed performance. He did outstandingly well in the opening power play, taking 1/13 in 4 overs, and there is no doubt that, although he has to work on his white-ball skills, he provides genuine wicket-taking opportunities.

The two areas that the Proteas will undoubtedly reflect on will be their batting in the final power play and their bowling in the second power play.

The Proteas only managed to score 76 in the final 10 overs which is way below their norm which often runs to three figures.

On a slow-paced pitch that lacked bounce and pace and under conditions that provided neither seam nor swing assistance the Proteas were left with a lack of wicket-taking options in the middle overs and it required the part-time spin of Reeza Hendricks to break the second-wicket partnership.

The chances are that pitches may be similar for the ICC World Cup and the Proteas will need to consider whether they need to play two specialist spin bowlers as an attacking option.

A good win however Pakistan could have won even more comprehensively. A familiar wobble in the late overs after a good start. Hafeez saved us in the end.

Fakhar - brain fade, needless hook

Babar - Missed a straight ball

Imam - brain fade - holed out

Batmen need to learn to value their wicket when set (and not leave it for others) does n't matter if they have 50-plus against their name. Why throw it away after doing all the hard work?

The middle order lacks quality imo. Sarfraz is occupying a batsman's position but he has not been very consistent with the bat of late.

A fit and in form Umar Akmal or someone with similar ability will be good in the middle order. However Akmal brothers lack discipline and they also bring politics with them into the team.

Imam Shouldn't have played that shot. But at least he wasn't being selfish.
Fakhar can never play the short ball that is a fact.
Babar's wicket was just unlucky. He should have played it better

People making too much of Fakhar's dismissal. He hit that shot against the wind, and on another day could have been a six.

That's his role, to go after the bowling. That's our template. He has the temperament to not be a Nasir Jamshed. Was bossing Rabada before his dismissal, which is no joke.

Well Done Boys!!!!

We played really well, Top effort from M Hafeez, Imam, Babar, Shadab and Hasan.

Good win.

Excellent batting from the Top 4. Unfortunately Malik couldn't finish the game and Sarfraz mispicked a googly playing down the wrong line. Shadab did well to end the match.

Insha'Allah there will be more wins on this tour.

Did'nt watch this match but happy to see Pakistan finally winning thanks to the opposition playing more like Afghanistan than South Africa.
Title should also credit Hashim Amla. On this wicket just 76 runs in last 10 overs is giving advantage to the opponents. Pakistani batsmen have made a mess of chasing before also but not much was required.

Imam was treated as a guest by the Proteas with Phehlukwayo bowling on this lifeless pitch with horrible field settings. Imam would not have survived there if Olivier continued to bowl. Anything over 140 kph is impossible for Imam to deal with. He would either get out playing a rash shot or get hit in the body.

Don't know if this win will do more harm than good supporting people like Hafeez and Imam.

You don’t even want to celebrate a ‘one off win’, are you watching cricket for fun or is there another reason?
Good question actually. I doubt if he is watching at all. Some people just check the final score on cricinfo and come here and give there expert opinion without even watching a ball.

Does consistently being negative make you feel good?

It's his oxygen lol, part of his internet persona, I would ignore him and enjoy the victory.

Shadab is lion hearted and should be a permanent member of the test team over Mr. Shah. Hafeez played well but obviously Amla played a big part in setting up the easy target; horrendously selfish innings. Steyn and QDK returning should make things much more interesting.

We should be looking to get mentally on top of these for the rest of the games.
Hopefully fakhar gets us off to an absolute flier on Tuesday

I couldn't believe my eyes seeing us chase down some 260 odd runs with relative ease!! It's a miracle no doubt about! We should produce a DVD off it making the players watch it for the next 100 years of how our third rate batsmen did something incredible for a change. One swallow doesn't make a summer although in one days we are a less of a disaster then we are at Tests.

This was main reason we won. Wicket was more like uae or Asian style than SA kind of wicket...

Let’s see how we do in the remaining ODIs, where wickets will have pace and bounce. Can we won those matches ??

A notorious poster has a fetish for putting Pakistan down win or loss, for putting ik down regardless of what he does, he smartly knows what to say or what to do to **** the nation and people of Pakistan off.

Superb win for Pakistan, congrats. Happy for the under fire coach and captain, hope it continues to be an entertaining series going to a decider.

SA have become a very ordinary ODI side, losing to Pakistan's B team. Steyn can't change alot for them on flat ODI tracks, the only big miss was De kock.

Pakistan don't even have Sharjeel, Junaid, Saud, Haris and, the best spinner in Pakistan currently, Kashif bhatti.

Also Missing Sadaf, Rumman and even Shaheen didn't play. Rumman is an ideal ODI bowler, swings the new ball into the RHB at 135+ kph, bowls yorker at will. Can't Understand how Amir is in the squad ahead of him and Junaid or even Sadaf who's has the best List A record of all the bowlers in Pakistan.

This SA bowling line up isn't good enough. Rabada will get thrashed all around the ground by Fakhar in coming matches. Phehekwayo isn't Int level bowler. Duanne Oliver is lucky too that there's no Sharjeel opening with Fakhar otherwise his ODI career would have ended in this series. And Steyn can't do anything extraordinary on Flat ODI tracks.

SA can trouble this Pakistan batting either by express pace or spinner in Tabraiz Shamshi. As except Malik n Hafeez they look shaky against spinners who have some control. Babar looks worst out of the lot against spinners , can't go big against them nor can rotate the strike freely even struggles to pick variations. Shadab made a mockery out of his batting in PSL n Kuldeep did the same in Asia cup. Imam as well isn't comfortable against spin.
Tabraiz or SA need to pick any domestic 145+ kph Fast bowler. Lockie ferguson made this batting line up look like a joke in UAE. Even a raw domestic express fast bowler would do a job for SA if their management have some sense

Good win. Its clear that Pakistan have a superior team compared to Saffers. Well played Imam, Fakhar and Hafeez and great pat on the back to the bowling attack.

This was honestly one of the most satisfiying victories in a long time. Chasing 250+ and we ticked all the basics. We saw off the new ball, rotated strike, put the bad balls away and didn't panic whenever we lost a wicket and that's why we won!

cameron white wasn't even an all rounder though... but yes.

he should bat at 8.

He came in as a bowler , but became a slogger , and moved up the order.

Shadab should be told his job is to bowl 10 overs every game. In Test Matches I see Shadab as a very good number 8 or in future number 7 .
