What's new

Improvement in Rahat Ali?

He was alright on balance. On balance he's been alright his entire career.
And could remain thus for many more years to come.

Exciting times ahead.
Leading pacer for Pakistan this tour. Can't be the first one to drop.

Sure. But. You are happy with his performance? Not only on this tour, but his career so far? Don't feel there might be better options worth exploring?

Nil.

He will never improve.

He bowls 1 Halwa (freebie) bowl every over 75 % of times or 100 % of times eveey two overs.

Very Good, Excellent or Great bowlers do not have this tendency.

He is a mix bag. Some beauties by chance (tuqqa) along with some rubbish deliveries.

We should always look for alternatives but in this squad he is the best on tour

Where is the improvement ??
None whatsoever, no test class bowler should have such poor control.
Short and wide , half volley , a prayer and a hope .
Isn't special enough to get away with such poor line and length.

2 deliveries out of every 6 deliveries is at a good length and spot. The other 4 deliveries are absolute turd.

How can an International player bowler so many poor deliveries, so often, consistently?!

I don't think anybody can be elated with Rahat but only two points are relevant

Firstly he has more wickets than wahab and creates more chances than him so naturally he shouldn't be the first to be dropped.

Secondly there isn't another seamer banging down the door of selection..yes Imran Khan is a possibility for the next test but other than that have to stick with Rahat for another test as it would be suicide to bring in a rookie at this late stage.

Because he isn't learning from his mistakes. For us, victory masks every thing and same for our players. They are always looking for luck.

He has skills, potential, pace, swing, but he isn't working on control and consistency. And this is what making him 2nd Wahab Riaz.

I agree only that Wahab should be the first to be dropped. Quite a few seamers have been banging on the door for some time. Why would it be a 'suicide' to try one of them for two Tests? Sadaf and Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza have all played A tours overseas, they have topped various leagues, producing better numbers at home than Rahat, and all average about 10 less than Wahab. Ali and Hamza may still be green, but for someone like Sadaf there is nothing left but to play.

Am sorry but you cant last in international cricket if your bowl 2/3 garbage boundary balls an over, Rahat is one of the worst bowlers ive seen play for pakistan, i had reservations about him being in test squad in 1st place and the 1st two tests have only shown hes clearly not good enough (3 flukey wickets in 2nd inns at lords dont change that for me)

He doesnt learn a thing does he ??
Brainless as ever . A captains worst nightmare .
Cant bowl two balls on a decent length in an over. Criminal at his pace .

He's put in some very good performances in the past and shown his talent and skill.

However, he does not have a brain, and in this case, you can not persist with someone. Bowls at least a couple of filthy deliveries every over which you can not afford to have in Test cricket.

Yes, he can pick up wickets out of nowhere but he gets hammered more often than not. We already have Wahab who is similar, except he can hold a bat as well and is more threatening.

Would still keep him in contention in the future, provided he does well in domestics. Maybe still good enough as the 4th or 5th bowler in the squad.

But he shouldn't get another game in the near future.

I think its the biggest injustice Rahat got the nod ahead of Imran Khan Jr in the first Test.

IK test record after 7 matches is actually very good and much much better then Rahat.

Rahat
avg 37, SR 69.2

IK
Avg 28.3, SR 52.8

3rd test has started and same old rahat, one or two good balls followed be usual 1 or 2 garbage balls an over.

The guy just runs up and bowls with no game plan and just hopes for the best, no effort to try and maybe bowl 3/4 dot balls and make batsmen runs, its pathetic to see such bowling.

Bowls a rubbish delivery almost every over. Ridiculous.

And there comes that wicket taking delivery inside all those garbage ones :)) Amjid Javed you should have bumped this early.

Raha and his habit of eating the big fish

When he bowls well .... Hafeez comes along

7 consecutive maidens for someone who is considered a scattergun.

He's bowled well in this match, has won me over with his performance!:yk2

Bowled with a lot more consistency and bowled his usual good balls. He's not the weak link anymore, in this attack it's Sohail who can't even get through the match, doesn't matter how good he performs.

So I would say bring in IK for SK. Amir, Rahat the main strike bowlers, IK to keep it tight! Mouthwatering attack!

Rahat ali should have been selected for odis in place of garbage gul and wahab.he would have not done any worse than these two useless bowlers

Rahat inconsistent again. Bowled a good spell recently against WI and then comes and bowls a poor one on a green pitch in Christchurch.

Rahat gets it to swing but his action almost invites a hit me delivery in every over... its an inbuilt error in his bowling..

I would still be heartened by the swing he was getting, he swung it more than Amir despite being first change

No improvement.

He's like Gul - sometimes will bowl well and sometimes utter rubbish.

Economy was bad and a couple of the wickets were lucky.

He's bowled better than he has in this game before and not been rewarded so it's about time he got some 'lucky' wickets.

Rahat isn't a new ball bowler either. What is the point of swing when you can't control it?

What world are you living in? Rahat was our premiere new ball bowler until prince charming with no swing came along.. enforced on us for God knows what reason.. and displaced Rahat for supposedly superior new ball bowling skills
If we wanted gun barrel straight at 135kph.. what was wrong with Junaid Khan? Wasn't he the guy that wasted the new ball everytime?

As someone mentioned above. Most Pakistani bowlers, and Rahat in particular were not that effective under Mohommad Akram. But after Waqar, I've also noticed the fact that the quicks were pitching it up...Wahab has also matured under Waqar. I also think it's time to limit Aamir to ODI and T20s. Wahab for Tests and T20s. Rahat for Tests only.

No. Wickets aren't everything.

You clearly don't know what test cricket is about.. this is not ODIs.. economy doesn't matter much.. it only matters to Amir fans who can't expect their hero isn't the bowler they thought he was.. Rahat is a superior new ball bowler

Economy is important in every format. Rahat is superior at swinging it, but that's it.

And picking up wickets.. Economy is not important in test matches as long as you pick up good wickets..

If a bowler goes at 6 an over.. but picks up 6 wickets in 15 overs.. it means he got more than half the side out for 90 runs.. and that is basically the game in a test match regardless of how quickly you scored

You seriously need to calm down, your fan boy posts are immensely biased.

How can you classify a bowler as a new ball bowler when he's going to bowl one "hit me" delivery. Isn't that also wasting the new ball?

I don't why you keep bringing up Amir. I'm not going to waste to much time on a typical fan boy.

If Rahat was picking 3-4 wickets every innings then it would be all right for a bowler to go at 4+ an over, but your beloved Rahat picks up 3 wickets across both innings at an economy of 4+.

Thats still more than Amir, who only picked up tailenders in England..

Again your bringing up Amir because it's the only way you can run away from the discussion.

Rahat is a better bowler than Amir, and he proved it today.. However Amir fans can only see something exceptional in his bowling spell, rather than praise the guy who actually got more wickets than him.. hypocrisy on this forum is just appalling
You should Rayyman about this more

Your tailender excuse above applies to Rahat's spell. Wagner and Astle are tailenders.

And Amir got Southee.. your point?
Also half his wickets in England were tailenders, does that make him a bad bowler?

This tailender arguement was brought by Rayyman in another thread, this was my reply to him sir..

Rahat was poor this test and despite this four-for he still remains the weak link in this attack.

Yea very rich coming from an Amir fan who didn't even take this many wickets ever since his comeback.. and takes Rahat's spot as a new ball bowler.. If Rahat had the new cherry this had a 5'fer written all over it

I am by no means an Amir fan, in fact Rahat is my favourite Pakistani bowler.

What makes you think Rahat was going to take a fiver-fer? He was atrocious with the ball yesterday.

Rahat had and has the opportunity to displace the current new ball pair if he shows any sign of control.

waleed88 you seem to be one of those guys that think that Rahat warrants a place in the side because of what he has the ability to do.

Haters didn't give him that average of 37.

Flat tracks did...

We'll find that out if he's given the ball in seaming conditions instead of 'Prince of no lateral movement'

Also he has a 6'fer in South Africa and back then he didn't have the pace he has right now

Wahab and Sohail bowl on the same tracks.

What happened in England?

Rahat picked up more wickets than Wahab..

Sohail bowled better than everyone..

Also Rahat didn't have the luxury to play 4 test matches and still end up with no decent stats..

Also questions should be asked for the way Rahat and Imran Khan have been handled since Amir has been added to the side.. I mean these were your test match regulars and you just dropped them to accomodate a guy who was not at his best, who played on past reputation, and your place is being shifted from a new ball bowler to a first change, only for Amir to exploit the swing/seam he doesn't have..

If Amir is used first change that is fine I can accept that, but what he's putting on show is not good enough from a new ball bowler

Let's focus on Rahat here.

His stats are less than mediocre. Whether you would like to accept that, I can't control that but the stats lay in front of you.

Imran was being handled with ease by the West Indian's, he was being punished by 2nd string County sides.

If you want to win outisde the UAE, ie not playing with scores of 550/3 d vs 430 all out, economy is hugely important. Nothing proves it more than this match.

Rahat has shown some marginal improvement in control under Mickey, but he has just not improved enough over the very long stretch of time that he has played, and he is no youngster any more.

Rahat is essentially a circus trick. He can do funky stuff with the ball, but that does not make him a great bowler - it makes him a decent bowler.

He is not very penetrative at all, ie, his SR is lower than Imran Khan (though Imran has played on flat decks far more than has Rahat) in internationals as well as domestics, and he has never taken a 10fer in domestics.

Ie he is not performing below his potential in international cricket. He is about as good now as he will ever be.

Truth is that neither Amir nor Rahat are up to scratch now, Wahab has not been across his career but he has been decent in recent series. Sohail, who gets the least love, has been the only class act since his return. That he has not taken a 5fer in every match he has since plated does not change this fact.

Which to me suggests that rather than bickering over which of these deeply flawed products is the least worst, we start testing out some new talent sooner rather than later.

Rahat's stats are what they are.. and Amir's stats are of a bowler who has been inferior to Rahat throughout the year.. I would pick Rahat over Amir anyday
