Workers attack Rana Sana’s residence in Faisalabad

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters took to streets in protest hours after the assassination attempt on the party Chairman Imran Khan on day 7 of the long march in Wazirabad on Thursday.

Angry protesters attacked the residence of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah in his hometown of Faisalabad. Protesters also took to the streets in Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Karachi and other parts of the country.

The PTI protesters clashed with police at Faizabad Interchange in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The Islamabad police used heavy tear gas shelling to disperse the protesters, while a women was detained.

PTI workers, led by Punjab Minister Fayyaz Chauhan and National Assembly Member Sadaqat Abbasi also staged protests on Murree Road, Peshawar Road, GT Road, Kalar Saedaan Road and at other places.

The National Highways and Motorway Police said that PTI workers staged protests by burning tyres in Rawat, Gujar Khan, Suhawa, Wah Cantt and other places.

As soon as the news about the gun attack on the Imran’s convoy spread, PTI workers came out on roads in Peshawar. Some provincial ministers and assembly members also joined them.

The workers marched from Hashtnagari to the Assembly Chowk. Angry marchers also attacked a police armoured vehicle during the protest, however, traffic continued on GT Road and Khyber Road continued to ply.

Talking to reporters, provincial Finance Minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra said that those who attacked Imran Khan wanted to create chaos in the country but the PTI wanted peace.

“We did not lose patience despite the attack on Imran Khan. We have held peaceful protests and the workers have not been agitated anywhere in the country,” he added.

The minister said that the party’s real freedom movement would not stop. “The Tehreek-e-Insaf leadership has called a meeting and the future course of action will be chalked out,” he added.

Later, the ministers announced end of the protest and left the venue. However, staunch PTI workers were angry at their leaders’ decision and continued their protest in Hashtnagari.

PTI Balochistan staged demonstrations in Quetta. The protesters blocked the main Airport Road and Koaila Phatak, burning tyres and chanting full-throated slogans against the federal government.

“We want the arrest of the attackers”, Muhammad Usman, a charged PTI supporter demanded. He alleged the present government had deliberately created law and order problems for the Haqeeqi Azadi March.

“Imran Khan is our leader and we will render every kind of sacrifices for him”, said Asmat Khan, another PTI supporter. He added that Imran Khan was the most popular leader of the country.

Long queues of vehicles were witnessed on both sides of the road because of the road block, while thick black smoke bellowed from the burning tyres. Even people had to use alternative routes to reach the protest venue.

The Balochistan government had tightened security across the provincial capital and other cities. Police, levies and personnel of the Frontier Corps (FC) had been deployed on all roads of Quetta to maintain order.

A large number of PTI leaders and workers also took to the streets in Karachi to lodge their protest against the attempt to assassinate their party chief.

Charged workers blocked roads by setting tyres on fire at more than 18 places in the cirty against the firing on the Long March rally in Gujranwala that caused injuries to Imran Khan and other leaders.

Parliamentary Leader Sindh Assembly, Khurram Sher Zaman, PTI Karachi President, Bilal Ghaffar, and other leaders including Ashraf Jabbar Qureshi, Raja Azhar, Shehzad Qureshi, Subhan Sahil, Shahab Imam and Saima Nadeem were present in the protest at Clifton.

Long march security SOPs ‘apparently ignored’

RAWALPINDI: The situation around PTI’s long march in Wazirabad, before the party’s Chairman Imran Khan was attacked, on Thursday indicated that the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), required to be put in place for the safety of the caravan, were not fully observed.

The home department through its Oct 26 advisory, containing the SOPs, had directed the authorities concerned to ensure foolproof security for the long march.

The advisory was issued to Punjab IGP Faisal Shahkar, divisional commissioners and police chiefs of Counter Terrorism Department, Special Branch, city police officers of Gujranwala and Rawalpindi, other law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The home department had directed the authorities concerned to “install bullet-proof glass around the PTI chairman” when he addresses the general public and ensure “a layer of close police protection in specific radius around the former prime minister”.

However, there was apparently no bullet-proof glass and layer of police around Mr Khan when he was attacked.

“A layer of close police protection in specific radius be ensured around former prime minister Imran Khan and no irrelevant person be allowed to go near him,” said the SOPs.

It said in order to ensure foolproof security, intelligence-based operation be carried out by the Counter Terrorism Department in coordination with intelligence agencies and stakeholders. The entire long march and public gathering must be cordoned off by the respective district police and no person or vehicle without checking be allowed to enter the long march.

According to the SOPs, technical sweeping by the Special Branch of all the routes and vulnerable places should be ensured and brandishing of weapons and aerial firing be strictly checked.

If ban on brandishing of weapons was implemented, the incident would have been averted, said a senior police official, requesting anonymity.

Under the advisory, no drone was allowed to fly in close proximity of the march. High-rise buildings along the route must be cleared and manned by the respective district police.

All police chiefs were told to inform the home department in case of need to jam cellular services.

The home department also said that security of important installations, government buildings, banks and foreign food outlets should also be ensured. Quick Response Force will be kept ready to handle any emergency situation.

Additionally, bomb disposal squad and fire brigade should be kept in a state of readiness, the SOPs said.

The home department had forwarded the copies of SOPs to the Intelligence Bureau, sector commanders of ISI and MI Punjab, etc to ensure implementation.

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan underwent surgery at Shaukat Khanum Hospital, to remove bullet fragments after he was shot in the leg at a rally in Punjab’s Wazirabad, ARY News reported on Friday, quoting sources.

The former prime minister’s leg surgery continued for one and a half hours. He has been shifted to a private room after a successful operation.

Though the operation was minor but time was needed to ensure the removal of every particle from the leg of Imran Khan, the sources within the hospital were quoted as saying.

The PTI chief underwent CT Scan, X-Rays and other tests at the hospital at night, while a team of doctors led by Dr Faisal Sultan will examine him in the morning again.

Earlier, Faisal Javed Khan said in a Twitter message that he met Imran Khan who underwent surgery. He said that the PTI chief is healthy by the grace of Allah.

Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman and former premier Imran Khan is "recovering fast", a day after surviving an assassination attempt.

The former prime minister sustained a bullet wound to his leg after an armed attack on his container, as he led the PTI's ‘Haqeeqi Azadi March’ in Wazirabad on Thursday.

One person died in the incident, while several members of the PTI chairman’s close circle, including Senator Faisal Javaid, former Sindh governor Imran Ismail, Ahmad Chattha and Imran Yousaf, were injured.

"Thanks to Allah Almighty, Imran is recovering fast with every moment. Allah Almighty has given a new life to the most popular leader of the Muslim world," said PTI leader and Punjab Government Spokesperson Musarrat Jamshed Cheema.

Imran is also expected to chair a meeting of the party's senior leadership at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital (SKMCH), where he is admitted for medical treatment.

"After Friday prayers, Imran will chair a meeting of senior party leaders at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital (SKMCH) and deliberate upon the future strategy of the party’s 'Haqeeqi Azadi Movement'. All PTI workers and supporters should remain prepared for the next call of the party chairman,” Cheema added.

The PTI leader also said that those who attacked Imran were "not hidden from anyone. The public is aware of them".

"They have unveiled their faces" by attacking the former premier and "the conspiracy which was hatched against Pakistan in a drawing room has been witnessed by the entire nation in Wazirabad. It has become obvious that those who attacked Imran Khan have nothing to do with the 220 million citizens of Pakistan," said the PTI leader.

"The people of Pakistan will definitely take revenge for their beloved leader," said the provincial spokesperson.

Meanwhile, PTI Secretary-General Asad Umar announced a nationwide protest against the armed attack on Imran after Friday prayers. He said the party would "stage protest demonstrations across the country till Imran’s demand is not met".

As per the announced schedule, the party’s local organisations will stage demonstrations at all entry points of Lahore today (Friday). The PTI chief has on multiple occasions claimed that an “assassination attempt” was being hatched against him since his ouster as prime minister earlier this year.

In what was a prelude to his earlier May 25 ‘Azadi March’, Imran had told his supporters a plot was being orchestrated against his life, saying: “I have named all those elements involved in the conspiracy in the video. I knew about it and I got full knowledge of it a few days ago.”

Explaining why he recorded the video, Imran said, “If something happens to me, I want to let Pakistanis know who was involved inside and outside the country.”

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Friday said the federal government was ready to provide any and all aid for an investigation into the assassination attempt against former prime minister Imran Khan, provided he became a part of it as well.

Imran was shot at and injured on Thursday evening when a suspect, standing in front of the container carrying the PTI chief and senior party leaders, showered a volley of bullets with an automatic pistol when the party’s ‘Haqaaqi Azadi’ march reached Wazirabad’s Allahwala Chowk.

Earlier today in his first press conference since the incident, Imran alleged that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and a senior military official were part of the plot that had planned the attack. He said that no investigation could proceed until the three resigned from their positions.

Responding to his claims while addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Aurangzeb said: “You can get an investigation [from] wherever you want but you will have to become a part of it because you have levied an allegation.

“We are ready to appear in any kind of investigation … the Centre will completely cooperate in it [but] the nation will not hear your accusations and false story.”

The minister railed against Imran’s allegations, questioning what link the prime minister or Sanaullah had with the investigation since the matter happened in Punjab which the PTI had control over.

She said the entire provincial machinery and administration in Punjab belonged to the PTI and the Punjab police released the assailant’s video statements then why was the PTI chief raising fingers at the three individuals?

“Twenty-four hours pass and you accuse the prime minister, interior minister and an institution [official] and after 24 hours you still can’t register a FIR (first information report) because you know you are lying.”

Aurangzeb said Imran could become the head of any investigation committee if he so desired but he would have to provide proof of his claims.

Regarding his admission that he had information about the attempted attack beforehand, Aurangzeb lashed out at him and said: “Why did you waste the lives and blood of those innocent people or not tell the Punjab government or remain exposed and continued the long march?”

She questioned whose hands were responsible for the death of a person in the incident if Imran knew about the attempt and yet did not call off the march. The minister also asked whether the injured had received the same level of care as the PTI chief.

Aurangzeb said that the Punjab government should “immediately” carry out an investigation into the incident.

Establishment sold out like a bag of chips to the Yanks after IK visited Putin when the Ukraine conflict began. USA couldnt afford Pak to leave them and join Russia, the General agreed as it would mean less money for his boys in the long run.
