ISLAMABAD: Declaring the opposition as a “gang of criminals”, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday accused Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president and Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif of using the floor of the house to malign the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Talking to two groups of foreign journalists and local TV anchors on Saturday, Mr Khan stated in categorical terms that his government’s campaign against corruption would continue at all costs and that he would not succumb to any pressure.

According to Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, who was present in both meetings, besides discussing the political situation in Pakistan, the prime minister also talked about the state of economy and apprised the journalists about the steps being taken by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government to steer the country out of crisis.

PM says bureaucrats are creating hurdles; poverty alleviation package to be unveiled next week

Mr Chaudhry quoted the prime minister as saying the government would not strike any deal with the opposition over the issue of corruption and no corrupt person would be spared. “A lot of politicians are criminals. We have enough evidence [to ensure] criminals won’t escape,” Mr Khan added.

“I will not spare any thief or a criminal,” the minister quoted Mr Khan as having stated during his interaction with the media. The prime minister declared that those who had brought the country to the present state would not be spared.

Mr Khan was of the view that the opposition leader had used the floor of the assembly to carry out “media trial” of NAB.

Reacting to the opposition’s protest over the arrest of the opposition leader and PML-N president, Mr Khan said that Shahbaz Sharif was trying to become Nelson Mandela — a former South African president and peace activist who had to spend 27 years in prison due to his political struggle.

While speaking during the opposition-requisitioned session of the National Assembly, Shahbaz Sharif had assailed NAB for alleged ‘political victimisation’ and disclosed details of his interrogation by the watchdog alleging that there was an ‘unholy alliance’ between the ruling PTI and NAB.

The PML-N president, who had been allowed to attend the sitting on the production order of Speaker Asad Qaiser, in his nearly 80-minute speech, had also alleged that he had been offered to become approver in cases against former foreign minister and PML-N stalwart Khwaja Asif.

Mr Sharif, who had been brought to Islamabad for the session only a day after an accountability court in Lahore had extended his remand for two weeks in the Ashiyana housing scam, also alleged that he was being kept in a windowless cell with no light and air passage and that he had been arrested without any charges in a “crude manner”. He claimed that the NAB chairman had signed his arrest orders in the first week of July and the orders were used just before the recent by-elections. According to Fawad Chaudhry, the prime minister at one stage called Shahbaz Sharif “fake Mandela”.

Civil bureaucracy

The PM, the information minister said, complained that the civil bureaucracy was creating administrative hurdles in the way of the government.

Mr Khan said most of the bureaucrats had been appointed by the previous PML-N government and his government was not getting “fullest cooperation” from them. He expressed the hope that the situation would improve and the bureaucracy would take some time to change.

About the ongoing criticism of the government for seeking foreign loans, Mr Khan said that approaching the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout package was not a big issue. The problem was the conditions attached to it, he added. He said the government was making every effort to negotiate a deal with the IMF so that its conditions would not have any direct impact on the less privileged.

“The country would make an economic comeback in the next six to eight months,” Mr Khan was quoted to have stated.

Mr Chaudhry said the premier also disclosed in the meeting that the government would announce next week a special programme aimed at alleviation of poverty and to provide support to the marginalised segments of society.

According to the information minister, the PM said efforts were under way to reduce line losses through improvement in the power distribution system. He said the government was also taking steps to improve investments and to bring foreign remittances through legal banking channels.

I am not even sure you can call it controversial- it’s just fact. The family businesses are using politics to make, thats the only reason for their politics.

Hope this democracy continues in Pakistan. I’ll have a nice laugh in 10 years time. Right now I have to ‘give them some time’.

We don't play dirty politics like Khan.

Only play with people’s future, their lives, their hard earn money to feed their families.

You still have time to switch alliance, matter of fact you’ll have no choice as Zardari, NS and Altaf’s party has become history.

We don't play dirty politics like Khan.

How is catching thieves dirty politics. If they broke the law then they should be nailed because if they arent then essentially it becomes a conspiracy against the poor. All that Rona dona by you Nooras is because Khan sahib is not playing by your rules.

As their end comes near, desperate they become.

These people are the true enemies of Pakistan. Allah in ke napaak iraday naakam banaye. Aameen.

I personally don't see any end in the near future. No country is corruption free but it is not God but the people who have let corruption on a massive scale go unchecked, be it due to illiteracy, brain washing, getting benefits from the corruption or just simply not having the time nor energy to combat such issues.

Sharifs were released, Atif Mian was removed from the panel due to Mullah pressure, Jaahil party members acting like idiots in Parliment etc etc.

Nothing will happen until the people really want change and I don't see anything happening (no major reforms) anyway in the next decade or two. Would actually be an achievement if don't regress even further.

Yes and No. Yes because as a PM ppl expect him to do the actual deed and not just talk about it. And No because that’s just a fact.

And just because the opposition is full of thugs don’t make their criticism any less valid. Facts just don’t go way by discrediting those who are bringing them up.

The state has decided not to spare anyone and recover looted money. Nawaz Shareef was jailed before Imran became PM. Imran Khan or no Imran Khan, the process of accountability shall continue. I heard reports which say Nawaz Shareef has offered Rs.300 billion for NRO. But the estimate of his looted wealth is in thousands of billions. Sooner or later sense will prevail and a sensible deal will be struck. People dont care they just want the money back!

Fresh from having insulted Modi, we now have IK turning his attention to the Pakistani Opposition leaders. Running a country is not a game of cricket. Making the opposition weaker by throwing them into windowless cells doesn't mean you have made progress in getting the economy to modernize.

You bet the IMF is going to attach conditions to any loans it gives Pakistan. IMF is not a charity, it wants the money it lends to be returned in the future. It is concerned that the CEPC requires Pakistan to pay China about $3.5 billion a year in about 5 years time. If IMF lends Pakistan money now, it will ask the Pakistani government to reduce its expenditures, and that would impact the less privileged.

The better solution would have been for Pakistan to develop modern industries so that it could export high value items such as software, autos, pharma etc. like India does. However, given the Army tight grip on the economy, and IK's lack of statesmanship and lack of vision, it appears textiles, cotton and cereals will remain Pakistan's major exports. Lack of growth of high value exports combined with huge CEPC debt repayments in the near future means that government expenditure will have to be cut to get the IMF loan.

PTI needs a clean up as well. IK should accept that.

If we start a proper clean up at least 50% of the politicians will disappear. It can be for multiple reasons iqama, tax evasion, fake degree etc.

Imran Khan at this point can not accept a clean up because he will likely lose his majority seats in government. Politics and democracy is not that straight forward.

Pakistan needs time to evolve. Catching the biggest tax evaders and corrupt people is a good start tho.

That’s the thing man. If you aren’t willing to clean up your own house but want to prosecute the opposition for corruption, then to the rest of the world it sounds a lot like political victimisation (rightly or wrongly). That’s just bad for the economy and everything else.

Then let them disappear. Thing is that the entire system stinks so it will eventually give in anyway. The excuse of not being able to afford a clean up is as old as Pakistan now. There will be no right time to do it, whenever it happens it's gonna be a big mess. Oh please!! This democracy is in danger won't work anymore. At this rate the only thing that is evolving is corruption and lies.

Easier said than done. For a simple majority I believe you need 137 seats. I dont know what the exact count is right now but the last thing PTI would want now is to lose seats and topple its own government. Lol. Once we can somehow get rid of the big fish like Zardari or Nawaz Sharif, all the others will fall in line too if they haven't already.

Any how this is the very reason a lot of people stopped supporting PTI and lost some of their members like Fauzia Kasuri for example. Also in by elections Imran Khan gave Humayun Akhtar a ticket who has run elections on both PPP and PML-N ticket. Any how we have to trust that Imran Khan and his team will now fix things from the inside now that they have somehow gotten in.

I don't know who in PTI you are saying tho are corrupt. The only one I know who has big cases against him is Aleem Khan.

There might be some bad apples but they are negligible compared to some of the corrupt ppl in the other parties.

Here you go again, it has been 2 months. But since you went on your verbal diarhea on trying to tie Pakistan's ecnomomy to Kashmir, so here you go again.
-It has been less than 2 months.
-To build high tech industry Pakistan need to get stable economy first.
-Everything you said about IMF and China is well known by every Pakistani, not only you, everything has been taken into account.
-Lack of vision and statesmenship? are you still upset that Modi was put in his place?

Pakistani are showing patience, why are you trying to act like a teenager girl who always worrying about everything going to be worse?

I am defending Pak from a system that is sucking it down. There is nothing contradictory about my comments at all when I supported IK during the election campaign. You are imagining things here, wanting a permanent end to corruption is defending Pakistan.
