In IPL, cricket gets forgotten: Dale Steyn feels PSL more rewarding than Indian Premier League

I actually agree with Dale. Cricket is at the forefront and therefore more enjoyable in leagues like the PSL and SLPL whereas it can take a back seat in the IPL.

How can you claim cricket takes backseat with the standard of batting, bowling and fielding we see in IPL?

IPL contracts are very lucrative for foreign players. It will be mad for them to affront IPL.Best thing is to make as much money as possible and then express your true feelings. The main attraction of IPL is the money. If the money was not there the big stars will not be very keen to play in IPL.

And players play in PSL for their love of Pakistan. They are ready to play for free there

Kind of silly for anyone to think players party for 2 months rather than give their best effort. If they don’t perform there is no sifarish to get them a contract next year.

Steyn didn’t perform, wasn’t going to have his contract renewed, and then whines :))

Steyn is a free man and is allowed to state his opinion. If he likes the Pakistan League then he can praise it all he wants.
The comparison with IPL though, was unnecessary and rather unbecoming of his stature as a global superstar. After all, he has played quite extensively in the IPL and has earned plenty there.
There is no need to mention India in a tournament that has nothing to do with it.

It's just his opinion. Obviously in IPL the big talk will be money because it's a monopoly. But steyn is saying this after playing and bagging in that money from all his playing years in the IPL. He wants to enjoy his Cricket now and feels like PSL gives him that.

I saw some tweets confirming PSL postponement. The replies were mocking Steyn. That's a shame. He is entitled to his opinion.

Untrue. IPL not monopoly. It is just a league with lots of money.

Steyn was tricked by cheap journalism. India Pak rivalry being milked indirectly..can't you see that ?

He was asked about it so he mentioned.

At 40, PSL is always more rewarding than IPL for a fast bowler.

The Indian online army abused him so much that he has had to put out an apology tweet.

India maintains its award for being most thin skinned nation for a record 15th year

Mob mentality and attacking celebrities online like this isn't new in India and have gained lot of popularity ever since Modi became our PM. Dale Steyn did the right thing by taking a u-turn. No one can deal with hundreds of intolerant and sensitive jaahils at the same time. :inti

I don't think Indian fans atleast in this forum were attacking him for that comment.

Actually, what our point was that he is finished as a bowler and after his performance in IPL last year, it is unlikely that he will get another go so it completely makes sense on Steyn's behalf to praise the league where he can earn moolahs for next 2-3 years.

In general, most Indian fans rate and appreciate three non-Indian bowlers very highly- Glenn McGrath, Wasim Akram and Dale Steyn.

Its not only about money, compared to ipl he'll get more games in SLPL & PSL etc.. in IPL he mostly warms the bench, can hurt his ego seeing every cr@p bowler (RCB had) playing ahead of him..

Q: Why do you think we are seeing fewer yorkers in Test cricket?

Wow! So Modi is root cause of everything.

South African all-rounder Chris Morris has disagreed with Dale Steyn’s comment that the IPL is less rewarding than some other T20 leagues owing to the emphasis on money.

In an interview with Cricket Pakistan, during his PSL stint with the Quetta Gladiators, Steyn had commented that, sometimes, the over-emphasis on money takes away the attention from the actual objective of the IPL. He, however, apologized for the same, clarifying that his intention was not to demean any T20 tournament.

Asked for his views on the same, Chris Morris said,, that he has a differing view. He, however, backed Steyn, explaining that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Chris Morris stated:

"No, I don't feel the same (on Steyn’s opinion on IPL). Dale's a free spirit, Dale's one of the legends of the game, Dale's one of my favourite people in the world. Dale's got his opinions, he will be outspoken about his opinions, but that's Dale's character.”
The 33-year-old further opined that Steyn’s thoughts must have originated from how he was emotionally or physically at that point of time.

"I'm not going to delve into it too much and it was just the case of Dale feeling at that time what Dale was feeling - what he was feeling emotionally or physically or mentally. Whatever he feels that's what he feels, and I'm happy to have a conversation with him about it. But, we're all different animals, we're all different people and we have different opinions and that's what makes the world go around," Chris Morris added.

Not worried about the World Cup, I'm here to win matches: Chris Morris
The common thought process around the cricketing circuit is that IPL 2021 is a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup to be held in India later in the year. For Chris Morris though, it’s all about focusing on the job at hand.

"Whether there's a World Cup or not, it's going to be a very important [IPL] season all the way. Other guys will hopefully be focusing on the World Cup and that takes their focus away from the IPL and we can jump onto that. Personally, I'm not worried about the World Cup, I'm here to do the job to win matches and hopefully push for winning the trophy in the IPL," the all-rounder stated.

Dale Steyn is featuring as a commentator for Star Sport's iconic 'Select Dugout' for the tournament. He will be joined by Dugout regulars like Graeme Swann, Scott Styris, Brett Lee, Brian Lara and Dominic Cork, among others.

So seems still very much connected to IPL

Cricket gets forgotten in the IPL according to Mr Steyn but he is still willing to commentate on it lol.

Such a shameless thing to employ him after what he said. The guy spitted on BCCI/IPL.

Cricket does get forgotten in the IPL that means with his commentary he’ll bring cricket back. Dale Steyn is a smart man. He knew if he said this he’d get role somewhere in the IPL. He is after all the legend of the game his words hold too much weight to ignore.

He is entitled to his opinion. Don't agree with it.

It’s called freedom of speech. Well done for the BCCI or whoever that offers contracts to commentators for rewarding freedom of speech for once

Seen so many posts saying cricketers say nice things about India to get IPL contracts. I hope that delusion is gone

Nobody really cares for such things in India. Only thing that matters is ability. Dale Steyn is massively popular in India. Nobody will grudge him for his comments

Andrew Symonds & Matt Hayden landed massive IPL contracts just weeks after 2008 Sydney test fiacso

First of all, Dale admitted he was misquoted..so put this to rest and enjoy IPL. Dale himself clarified this and said he owes a lot to IPL..

He wasn’t misquoted. He panicked when he saw the reaction of Indians and feared for his bank account, hence the U-turn.

Steyn knows he is no longer good enough to play in IPL while PSL will keep food on his table for the next few years as far as his playing career is concerned, but those remarks against IPL could have sabotaged his presence in IPL as a coach/commentator in the future.

Food on his table? He isn’t from Pakistan, India or Bangladesh.
