India (150/5) defeat Pakistan (146) by 5 wickets in thrilling encounter to clinch Asia Cup 2025 title

Pakistan's Batting so bad that we forget that bowling too is very flawed. In past Pakistan was able to win matches just thru great bowling but those days are over. For example Haris Rauf he leaks runs and takes few wickets. We need strike bowlers who can build pressure by taking wickets. All Haris has is pace which is not enough. Haris Rauf is a great bowler on Australian & South African pitches (he would do well in South African Odi World cup 2027) but we need wicket takers like Naseem Shah and Khurram Shahzad etc. Khurram Shahzad has emerged as a genuine Wicket taker in tests, why not play him in T20s. Haris Rauf is Wahab Riaz 2.0 who bowls fast but then gets spanked all over the ground. Fix the Batting, fix the bowling and find a captain who is an automatic selection not like Agha who barely qualifies (Agha didn't play a single significant innings in the tournament??)

Apart from Haris Rauf, everybody else bowled well.

I think bowling is good currently. Just have to replace Rauf.
 
Pakistan failed to play its full 20 overs. They were bowled out in 19.1 overs. Which means they did not utilize those 5 deliveries which could have been crucial for them.
One of Pakistan’s middle order players should have shouldered the responsibility. We can clearly see how Indian middle order took on the burden of scoring when top order failed. Tilak, Samson and Dube played brilliantly by absorbing all the pressure. Pakistan does not have such players.

The gulf between the teams is clearly there to be seen. One playing like a team on a mission and the other hoping that some miracle would happen. Pakistan bowling has also regressed. A few years ago, Pak had the bowling to defend smallish totals. Now that strength has also deserted them.

I feel teams like BD, Lanka, Afg and Pak are very close interns of talent and ability. They all have one thing in common. The lack of killer instinct.

Yeah. T20 only specialists seem to have shorter lifespans

Ideally, you need guys with a higher ceiling but also the temperament and skill for at least the ODI format so that they can negotiate tougher batting wickets.

Yes I had a good look this time. He definitely has the shots. As far as I could see, he's not the fully modern T20 opener i.e. the likes of Head and Abhisek who are looking at pretty much every ball as an opportunity to hit but does have the aggressive attitude.

Can be a good serviceable opener if he puts in more effort and gains confidence. Needs to get his strike rate into the 140s at least.

No, it is not. There are so many better bowlers Abbas Afridi, Naseem Shah, Khurram Shahzad, Zaman Khan. Faheem did good (today) but we have better bowlers. Hasan Ali, Faheem & Haris Rauf are 2nd string bowlers.
 
Last time we lost a game of T20 was back in January 2025, 28th January to be precise.

This is simply unheard of consistency especially in a format as fickle as T20.
 
The 5 match T20I series in Australia next month will be a mouth watering contest. Australia have big hitters(Maxwell-David-Owen) in the middle overs plus Head-Marsh at the top. Hope Australia play their strongest team in atleast 3 matches against the Asian + World Champions.

I maintain no fast bowler gets smacked for as many sixes as Rauf.

Batsmen know that he will give you hittable deliveries every over. Pace without intelligence means nothing. Lacks accuracy and strategy.

Time and again we make the same mistake by bowling him in crunch overs.

After he got smacked for 17 runs in his second over, stupid captaincy by Agha to bowl Rauf’s full quota.

Those two overs could have been bowled by Saim and Nawaz (conceded 6 runs in his only over)

Well yes Pakistan middle order
Was pretty ordinary and that cost the match but all isn't lost as far as pak cricket is concerned.problem is playing too many allrounders and none of them qualify as genuine allrounder.consistency is missing and there is no genuine striker down the order.just a better squad selection would have made Pakistan even stevens with India.Babar Azam in middle order is alone better than half the team.In next T20 series some simple changes need to be done and with world cup next year then give this pool consistent run.

If you want to talk stats then Abbas Afridi averages 15.52, 38 wickets from 24 T20 internationals that too relatively recent, yet he is not in the squad. Test stats are not good because Pakistan made flat roads of pitches where making 700 was easy and then they went from flat roads to rank turners where all wickets went to spinners. It ruined pace bowlers strike rates greatly. Rauf can't even play Tests that shows his limitations. Naseem domestic strike rates are all in 20s.

Naseem's stats are even worse in SENA. Rauf might be bad, but Naseem is not the answer.

A tale of two techniques as well.

When Indian batsmen slog they will usually find the appropriate angle and power to ensure a six.

When Pak batsmen try to slog (with a few exceptions), most of them will either hole out into the deep (not enough power in the shot) or it is a completely mistimed lollipop high aerial shot resulting in a simple catch.

Give PCB the amount of money BCCI has or reduce BCCI money to what PCB has, thus making both boards equal, then Pakistan will outperform India every time. Indians only exhibit strength from an advantageous position but not as much from a position of parity.

Case in point - Competitiveness and quality of cricket teams until late 90s when both PCB and BCCI had comparable amounts of money (BCCI had just a little bit more but not like today).

Also india should bat with one leg tied and allow Pakistan to claim one tip out catches. Otherwise india is just exhibiting strength from an advantageous postion.

Not really, good try to put 90s but let me put it, in 1980s PCB had way more money, Pak economy way better and was richer than BCCI yet India won 1983 and defeated Pakistan in 1985 world series final.

India came back stronger every time to fight back and win the game. WT20 world cup final in 2024 and numerous test matches are prime examples for this. You need mental fortitude like Indian players to stage a comeback. Not your imaginary jazba and delusional superiority in your imaginaru world.

Yes, Naseem doesn't have good stats at the moment but what he has is ability far greater than Rauf's. Naseem can play Test cricket and Rauf can't. Stats don't tell the whole story, do stats show how many match winning performance the player had. Stats don't show if the wickets were tail enders or front line batsmen. Or if it is batsman's fault or did bowler actually bowled an unplayable delivery. In stats a number 11 and Don Bradman both count as 1 wicket. Why are you focusing on Just Naseem? What about Abbas Afridi, Khurram Shahzad and Akif Javed?? Abbas Afridi, Khurram Shahzad, Akif Javed are way better options then Haris Rauf, they are wicket takers they should have been in the squad in place of Rauf and Faheem. An average of 35+ is the among the worst in cricket history. Its the numbers bowlers like Abbe Kuruvilla had, which you guys used to mock Indian bowlers for, the worst numbers in Indian cricket history.

And Naseem has played double the number of matches AB Kuruvilla did. Such an average over so long just shows how bad a bowler is.

Its very difficult to look past such numbers as it's a statistical anonmoly, no team gives so many matches to someone with those numbers. Even Indians never picked Kuruvilla again despite not having great bowling options at that time.

To imagine that one time Pak fans and media used to laugh at the numbers of Indian bowlers. And now they support someone with 46+ average against SENA including averaging 58 away.

Venkatesh Prasad Test Avg 35.00 Played 33 tests
J Srinath Test Avg 30.49 Played 67 tests
Irfan Pathan Test Avg 31.57 Played 29 tests
Manoj Prabhakar Test Avg 37.30 Played 39 tests
Madan Lal Test Avg 40.10 Played 39 tests
Varun Arun Test Avg 52.61 played 9 tests

As you see an average in 30s is not so bad according to Indian standards.

So only 3 bowlers are 35 +, prabhakar, madan lal and varun arun and varun played only 9 tests and other two are all rounders.

So even by indian standards, 35+ average is really really bad

So looks like while india has moved forward, you have moved back to the times when we had poor bowlers. As long as you acknowledge that.

Overall takeaway from Asia Cup was very little for India and Pak

1)India realized that they are still significantly dependent on Hardik+Bumrah and quality will drop by levels if either are unfit.

2) The tradeoff of trying to fit Varun+Kuldeep in XI and have an allrounder at #8 is still a difficult gap to bridge. They can still beat #5-10 ranked teams but will struggle against better opposition

3) I don't consider this as any turning point for Shivam Dube the player. He is a limited player who did what he always does - hit balls in his arc and miss those that are outside. He bowled average floaty bowling and was not destroyed because opposition was poor. His fielding and running bw wickets were sub par. At age of 33 he is what he is and ICT knows this is all they can get from him

Except that they didn't actually struggle against either South Africa or England while playing 2 wrist spinners + Axar.

India needs to sort out the issue created by accomodating Gill and banishing Samson to the middle order

India looked bad because of SKY and Gill. Axar cannot be used so far down the order. He cannot finish games by attacking from the word go. He should be strategically slotted up the order. Dube for our judgement delivered in two big finals that too under pressure. A quality that should be appreciated. You can have all the skills but if you don't deliver under pressure like SKY couldn't it is useless.

I mean just in cricket ( forget War or any other sphere in life ) we have won 9 Asia Cups vs 2 for Pak, won EVERY single big ticket WC game with the lone exception of 2021 T20 WC and here you are making these claims like Indians are physically and mentally weak and what not ... what is the basis for this ?

fun-fact in the ICC T20 WC Final circa 2024 we were done and dusted with SA needed 30 runs off 30 balls with 6 Wkts in hand and Klassen mauling us. You think there was no pressure there ?

Genuinely want to know the rationale behind this thinking.

In actual sports which require strength like weight lifting, wrestling, discuss throw and shot put, etc Indians leave Pakistanis in the dust every single olympics and asian games.

Lying and living in delusion is their national past time.

Naseem is only 22 years old & has played 20 tests. His average is bad because of the pitches that were prepared mostly flat roads (where huge amount of runs were made) or rank turners (where all the wickets went to spinners). All I said was that he has more potential than Haris Rauf. I didn't compare him to any Indian bowler, you brought up Kuruvilla. But I found out that he was only a couple of points away from many Indian legends of the past. First it was stats and then it was selective stats. Or excuses that they were allrounders. Madan Lal wasn't in the side as all rounder but as a bowler he wasn't a genuine allrounder. Allrounder is someone like Mohinder Amarnath or Kapil Dev.
An average in 20s is great while 30s is considered mediocre and 40s is poor.

The plight of Pakistan cricket is lack of test cricket. We play less than half the tests India or England or Australia plays. With that few tests we can't develop international test players anymore like we used to. On top of that Pakistani Domestic cricket is also not up to standard.

Averages 58 in SENA countries. Weird that SENA teams prepared spinning or flat tracks for him, lol.

And yes, his fake age is all his claim to fame. If he wasn't touted as some wonder teen no one would have hyped him up. But since his debut he has only gone backwards, not improved.

And I seriously cannot see how a bowler who averages 35 in t20s is better than someone who averages 21.
