Aiden Markram reclaims captaincy after filling in during the ODIs, while Quinton de Kock's return to open puts pressure on Ryan Rickelton, though the latter should hold his spot for now. Markram, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, and Tristan Stubbs form a menacing middle order, bolstered by all-rounders Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, George Linde, and Donovan Ferreira who provide both explosive batting and quality bowling. The Proteas possess the firepower to trouble any attack when they click. Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, George Linde, and Donovan Ferreira provide both explosive batting and quality bowling. Four proper all-rounders. Anrich Nortje's return following the T20 World Cup 2024 finale, partnering with Lungi Ngidi, gives the bowling unit serious teeth. Nortje. Remember that name? The man who regularly hits 150 kph, who can bowl yorkers at will, and who makes batting look like a survival test. Pair him with Ngidi's variations and you've got a new-ball combination that can blow away any top order. Keshav Maharaj and Linde lead the spin attack, giving South Africa a balanced bowling unit that can operate in any conditions. Now, the venue. Cuttack. Just three T20 matches have been played here. Three! That's barely a sample size. How will the pitch play? What's a good score? Does it turn? Does it seam? All valid questions with very few answers. The venue has consistently produced batting-friendly tracks with a fractionally slower pace, so expect runs. But don't be shocked if spinners find some grip as the ball gets older. South Africa have played two of those three matches and won both times, in 2015 and 2022. Of the four T20I series played in India, South Africa have claimed one victory and drawn on two occasions. It's not like the Proteas are pushovers in Indian conditions. They've competed, they've won, and they've proven they can handle the pressure. But can they challenge this Indian team who is progressing ahead on the theme of ultra-aggressive batting? Or can India restrict the resurgent Proteas in the shortest format? An overwhelmingly competitive T20I series is on the cards. Expect entertainment aplenty at the Barabati Stadium.

India has a weaker T20 side than say an year back since the insertion of Gill. They are desperately trying to make this work much like they tried to make Sundar work in ODI.

Is that Barabati stadium in Cuttack , India has around 50+ venues for intl cricket

A very important match here.

So far in this series South Africa have won 3 matches and India 2.

A win here for India could make it all square for them.

You can't combine wins. ODI/T20 wins have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Not important. THey could get whitewashed here and still go home the happiest team.

This is going to be blockbuster Series. India and South Africa are top 2 team in the world. :kp

Need to add some masala to keep the series spicy
Neither team takes bilaterals seriously. India probably does this time just to whitewash the horrendous test series losses. But in T20 just one player can singlehandedly win a game for your team. SA has enough such players in the current setup.

As a fan, I now see these JAMODIs and JAMT20 series only for fun and team combinations.

At this point, to me, only marquee tournaments (most importantly ICC tournaments) and test matches matter.

Suryakumar confirms India duo fit for South Africa T20Is

India captain Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed that both Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill are in readiness to make a comeback for India in the South Africa T20I series after their bouts with injuries.

Gill had sustained a neck injury in the first Test against South Africa last month, while Pandya had been out of the team owing to a left quadricep injury he picked up during the Asia Cup 2025.

"Both [Gill and Pandya] are looking healthy and fit,” said Suryakumar in the pre-match presser ahead of the first T20I in Cuttack.

The Indian skipper also highlighted Pandya's importance to the balance of the side, particularly with the ball.

"What you saw in the Asia Cup also, when he [Hardik] was bowling with the new ball, he opened up a lot of options, combinations for us with respect to the playing XI.

"That's what he brings to the table. His experience, the way he has done well in all big games, all ICC events, ACC events. I think that experience will count a lot and his presence will definitely give a good balance to the side."

Suryakumar also opened up on the flexibility expected from the middle order and Sanju Samson’s role in the side. However, he emphasized that the team will not tinker much with the core structure that has served them well in recent times as they set their sights on the ICC Men's T20 World Cup next year.

"Combinations, ideally, in the last five, six series, which we've played, we've tried and played with a similar combination. We've not changed too much.

"We don't want to change a lot, even going into the next two series also. The only thing is what type of cricket we want to play. That is one thing which we always want to try and do when we take the field.

"Rest, we don't want to change anything what's happening. I think touchwood, everything is going well. So we wanted to continue the same way. We don't want to change anything."

India have enjoyed an excellent run in the shortest format of the game recently, defeating Australia 2-1 in their own yard after clinching the Asia Cup.

Discussing Sanju Samson’s place in the side and the competition with fellow wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, Suryakumar acknowledged the value of adaptability in the middle order.

"In terms of Sanju, yes, when he came into the circuit, he batted higher up the order. Now the thing is, other than the openers, I feel everyone has to be very flexible.

"He did really well before when he opened the innings, but Shubman [Gill] had played before him in the Sri Lanka series and so he deserved to take that spot.

"We gave Sanju opportunities. He was ready to bat at any number, which actually is good to see any player being very flexible, batting from 3 to 6 anywhere."

Miller out to use India series to cement T20 World Cup spot

David Miller is feeling fresh ahead of his return to South Africa's side ahead of the five-match T20I series against India.

Veteran South Africa batter David Miller is keen to use the upcoming five-match T20I series against India to push his case for a place in the Proteas' squad at next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Miller has been a mainstay in South Africa's white-ball teams across the majority of his career and was part of the team that narrowly lost the most recent T20 World Cup final to India in Barbados.

A recent hamstring injury and a stint in a domestic T20 tournament in England has seen Miller miss out on many of the Proteas' white-ball fixtures in 2025, with the 36-year-old's most recent appearance for his country coming in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final against New Zealand at the start of March.

But with any lingering injury issues shaken off and the next installment of the T20 World Cup less than two months away, Miller is eager to make the most of his opportunity during South Africa's five-match series in India to ensure he earns a recall for the 20-over showcase that commences on February 7.

"It's just great to be back. It's been great watching the guys back at home even though I always feel I want to be there, but the guys have been doing so well, and it's been lovely to watch," Miller said from Cuttack.

"It's been an interesting couple of months for me, just being at home and reflecting on a few things was really cool. I moved into a different space by trying out different things with my body and tapping into a few different training regimes. It was actually a really good time away. I enjoyed it. You've got to take the positives from what's negative so it was really good. I'm feeling strong. I'm feeling fit and I'm feeling ready to go."

While the T20 World Cup is at the forefront of Miller's mind, the hard-hitting batter is also keen to stake his claim for a place in the Proteas' ODI setup ahead of the next ICC Men's Cricket World Cup that South Africa will co-host with Zimbabwe and Namibia in 2027.

Miller hit 356 runs in the most recent 50-over World Cup in India in 2023 and the left-hander is keen to sit down with South Africa coach Shukri Conrad shortly to see if he remains in his plans for the home tournament.

"I haven't had good chats yet with Shukri but now that I am back in the mix, we'll be opening up those conversations and seeing where we're at," Miller said.

"The ODI World Cup is just under two years away, there's a lot of new players that have come through and a big pool of players now that are doing really well. I feel like I can add something with my experience. In terms of selection, you're never guaranteed with certain things in life so it's a conversation that will unfold as the months go on and see where we're at."

And while Miller admitted there was still disappointment within South Africa's squad from their devastating loss to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, he said a breakthrough victory at the 20-over tournament is not far away.

"I've spoken to a lot of different people, and teams who have been very successful over the years with different trophies and World Cups," Miller said.

"I don't think there's one recipe to win a World Cup. I think it takes a group effort, management and players included. It's standing up when the moments matter."

Gill
Abhishek
Tilak
Sky
Hardik
Jitesh ( WK)
Dube
Axar
Kuldeep
Varun
BUMRAH

This is most likely playing 11 for india.

:kp

With Garbage Gill back, India will make 140-160 regularly now, which will end in losing the semifinal at Wankhede in T20 2026 World Cup.

Yes, that's what I was saying. Saffers need another back foot pinch hitter. Not much expectations from Brevis but let's see if he could fill in the Klassen's shoes
You can bring anyone's or play with World 11 yet India will win this series. :kp

You gotta feel for samson who made 2 centuries in SA and one in India not long ago got sidelined over this Jitesh the hack. A wicket keeper who can score a century. What a bonus that would be. Tilak used to bat at 3. Now they have screwed up his spot as well. SKY has been out of form for more than an year. There are no finishers. Gambhir completely destroyed the team structure.

Doesn’t matter, it is still the strongest T20 side around if you look at the balance.

Only Australia can claim to be competitive against this side, the rest unfortunately will be beaten more often than not.

Klassen averaged 17 with the bat against India the last time we played them. And that series was in South Africa .

So World Champions Asia Cup Champions 🏆 🥇 India take on SA , there will be plenty of runs

TOSS - Up goes the flip of the coin and Aiden Markram calls it correctly. South Africa will BOWL first.

Lmao. This is not Hyderabad or Centurion where you can blast away at will.

Need to get to the death overs with minimum damage and then explode

Another Gambir experiment failed. They left out a guy who made 2 centuries in SA for this guy

Nah, winning test series can't be negated even if SA loses all limited overs match.

They’ve turned intent into a joke. No assessing conditions etc, just go and slog blindly. It can work on highways, but on tricky squares you need to apply yourselves.

:kp

I've no problem dropping Samson from t20i but jithesh no way better than him tbh (or Gill)..

Pandya should look to play out Maharaj and attack other bowlers

Hardik Pandya the rightful Indian T20I captain. Man ooses aura. Swagger all around. :kp

Has the pitch become easy to bat? All shots are connecting and nothing mistimed.

The way Hardik is batting, 180 may not be enough if the pitch has indeed changed a bit.

South Africa ned wickets in hand. Eun will comes because of dew. They can chase this total :kp

Not liking Markram’s approach here.

Rubbish intent.

Rightly bowled!

What the hell was he looking to do? Bat the session?

Looks like all main players except the retired ones are playing in t20s

Shows the future of the game.
