India captain Rohit Sharma will have half an eye on the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year when his side begin their series against Sri Lanka in Lucknow on Thursday.

The all-format India captain has revealed he intends to use the three-match T20I series as a chance to find some squad strength and identify the sort of players who could excel on Australian pitches.

Two gaps are waiting to be filled in Sharma's side after new-ball bowler Deepak Chahar and in-form batter Suryakumar Yadav were ruled out of Thursday’s first match and the rest of the series with injuries.

Suryakumar was the Player of the Series in India’s recent 3-0 rout of the West Indies, but his absence offers the opportunity for another player to fulfill that middle-order role, with Sanju Samson in contention to be that player.

"Surya’s injury obviously is a setback. He was in great form as you saw in the last series; he was the Man of the Series. But there are so many players who are waiting to get an opportunity. I’ll be more than happy for them to come in and fill in.

"Sanju has got talent. Whenever we have seen him bat, he has produced an innings where everyone goes over the moon watching that. He’s got the skillset to succeed.

"Now, that’s the whole point about this spot. A lot of people have the skillset, a lot of people have talent. I think it’s up to Sanju how he utilises his talent and how he can maximize it. When you go to Australia, you need those kinds of shot-making abilities and Samson definitely has it in him."

India moved to the top of the ICC T20I Team Rankings ahead of England thanks to their series win over West Indies, and will be favourites to strengthen that position with another series victory over a Sri Lanka side who lost 4-1 in Australia earlier this month.

And Sri Lanka’s hopes of surprising their opponents in Lucknow suffered a blow when it was revealed that the team’s key all-rounder and recent star of the IPL auction Wanindu Hasaranga will not be available for the first match and maybe the whole series.

Hasaranga caught Covid during the recent trip to Australia and the length of quarantine time means he will not be cleared to feature in Thursday’s series opener.

"It's not that he has got a new infection, it's just that he has not cleared the old infection according to their (Australia's) level,” Arjuna de Silva, the head of SLC's medical department, explained.

"Each country has a different cut-off for a positive result, Australia's is fairly high and so to reach that value takes some time.

"He'll miss the first match [against India] for sure. Our job is to get him to India. Of course, whether he plays or not is a different matter. That depends on his fitness and other factors.”

India are missing below names who walks into first XI if fully fit:-

Virat Kohli
Rishabh Pant
KL Rahul
Suryakumar Yadav
Hardik Pandya
Deepak Chahar

There is Mohammad Shami also but personally I don't think he is a good T20 bowler so not counting him. Same for Shardul who is a bad T20 bowler.

I honestly dont know why Kishan didnt play as a first choice opener in WT20. He is a dynamite player.

India should stop playing against Srilanka. Its a waste of time for everyone. Players can rest, spend time with their families or even play few Ranji matches rather. Awful side this SL team and a poor advertisement for international cricket.

We can atleast invite Afg or BD and they would compete better.

They aren’t that bad mate. They are emerging side . Likes of Chamika, Chandimal and Hasaranga are good players. Would be good to test Ind squad before T20 WC

IND 199/2 (20)
SL 24/2 (4.5) CRR: 4.97 REQ: 11.6
Sri Lanka need 176 runs in 91 balls

This is why T20I stats are misleading. Limited players with technical deficiencies will have good stats in this format because the quality is often low.

Deepak Hooda is clearly chucking. Hope he gets called by the umpires.

He is Minnow basher. Can't play a quality bowler.
Sanju Samson has better technique than this Ishan hack, unfortunately he didn't get many chances.

Lol..After picking up the wicket of Dinesh Chandimal, Ravindra Jadeja brought out the Pushpa celebration.

That move has gone to his head

Pushpa celebration is cringeworthy and feminine. I have seen Bangladeshi players doing it during BPL also.

It looks very silly. It is worse than Nagin Dance celebration.

India won by 62 runs

Strange approach from Sri Lanka. They didn't seem to go for it. Did they just want to play out 20 overs?

India have now won their last 10 consecutive T20Is (since November 2021)- their longest winning streak in this format.

The overall T20I record is 12 consecutive wins shared by Afghanistan and Romania.

Was that a compliment or a subtle shade?:ssa

Rohit has great winning record . Hope he continues the winning streak along with luck factor which King Kohli did not have .

Ishan Kishan (89) and Shreyas Iyer (57*) helped India to a massive score of 199/2, before their bowlers came up with an excellent performance to keep Sri Lanka in check as the hosts won the first T20I in Lucknow by 62 runs to take a 1-0 series lead.

SCORECARD

Winning the toss, the visitors opted to bowl first. But their bowlers could not deliver a disciplined start as Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan went on the aggressive from the off. They made full use of the field restrictions, racing away to 58/0 in the Powerplay.

Kishan would hit a blazing fifty, signalling his timely return to form after struggling in the home series against West Indies. He would lose his opening partner and skipper Rohit Sharma though, bowled for 44 by a slower delivery by Lahiru Kumara. It was still an excellent start for India, who had raced away to 111/1 in 11.5 overs.

Shreyas Iyer would join Kishan at the crease and after a couple of tight overs from Sri Lanka, the hosts started to pick up the pace of the innings once again. Kishan was playing some scintillating strokes, swatting the Lankan bowlers with ease. Iyer was meanwhile rotating the strike expertly, as the Sri Lankan bowlers had no answers on how to stem the flow of runs.

It seemed as Kishan would bring up his maiden T20I century but he went for one big shot too many, falling against the medium pace of Dasun Shanaka in the final ball of the 17th over. But the job was done as his 56-ball 89 had set up a perfect platform for a mammoth total.

Iyer then picked up the tempo, piercing the field with surgical precision. He would bring up his half-century in the final over as Ravindra Jadeja only faced four deliveries. India would end up with a total of 199/2, with the visitors now having a mountain to climb during their chase. Their three frontline pacers – Chameera, Karunaratne and Kumara all went for over 10 runs an over, showcasing the dominance of the Indian batters.

In reply, Sri Lanka had the worst possible start to their innings as Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck with his first ball. A back of a length delivery skid onto the bat of Pathum Nissanka and he played it on to walk back for a duck.

Bhuvneshwar would strike again in his second over as Kamil Mishara could not clear the fielder as Rohit Sharma proved to be a safe pair of hands. This made up for the disappointment earlier in the over when Venkatesh Iyer had dropped a simple catch.

Janith Liyanage's struggle at the crease would end soon as well, as he departed against the bowling of Venkatesh Iyer after scoring a 17-ball 11, going for a pull but only finding Sanju Samson at point.

Sri Lanka's struggles continued as they lost their fourth wicket before the halfway mark in the innings, as Dinesh Chandimal was stumped for 10 off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja, who got one to turn away sharply.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka would try a cheeky reverse-sweep against Yuzvendra Chahal and pay the price for it with Bhuvneshwar taking a simple catch. The visitors had now lost half their side and Charith Asalanka from the other end was waging a forlorn battle.

He would bring up his half-century but Sri Lanka failed to get anywhere close to the target. Chamika Karunaratne and Dushmantha Chameera did play some big shots but the visitors could only muster 137/6 in reply, falling short by 62 runs.

India now take a 1-0 lead in the series and extend their winning streak to 10 in the shortest format, with the second T20I set to be played in Dharamsala on Saturday.
