Where

Eden Gardens, Kolkata

Team News

India Probable XI: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik, Yuzvendra Chahal

Sri Lanka Probable XI: Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage/Maheesh Theekshana, Chamika Karunaratne, Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka/Lahiru Kumara

Eden Gardens is sitting on past laurels. Old concrete jungle, small ground. Huge amount of dew in the evenings. Definitely not my fav ground.

There are talks that Eden Gardens will host India vs Pakistan match in 2023 world cup.

India tactics is to score big to give bowlers some cushion. But they have a long tail for this approach with Pandya and Axar in top 7 and rest of the bowlers fighting for No 11. But then you cant expect anything less from current TM.

Sundar in place of Chahal will give some cushion.

Chahal out, Kuldeep in. Does not solve the batting depth issue though.

Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to bat

Teams:
Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Kusal Mendis(w), Avishka Fernando, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Nuwanidu Fernando, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dunith Wellalage, Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Umran Malik, Mohammed Siraj

Rohit Sharma: I was in two minds. Wanted to bat first because of how we played last time, but looking at this ground, I wanted to field. Overall, improvements are as a team, nothing in particular. What we've done in the past is in the past, we need to look ahead and keep doing better. I love playing here, the crowd is also energetic and that motivates me always. But it is in the past, I need to start fresh. One enforced change for us, Chahal in the last game put in a dive and hasn't recovered well today, so Kuldeep Yadav comes in.

Dasun Shanaka: We'll bat first. Very good wicket to bat first, also looking at the venue stats. Important to score, be relaxed and play our natural game. Two changes - Madushanka and Pathum Nissanka out (shoulder injury), Nuwanidu Fernando gets a debut and Lahiru Kumara is back.

Gautam Gambhir: "My message for Umran Malik is don't listen to the bowling coach. Just look to bowl quick."

Gautam Gambhir: "My message for Umran Malik is don't listen to the bowling coach. Just look to bowl quick."

That is so true. He does not have the skill to trundle and succeed. His only skill is to bowl fast and intimidate no matter the runs conceded. Shanaka was feasting on his low speed balls at the later stages ( dew also could have played its part ).

As per Rohit, a forced change coz of injury. Could be in next match even if Kuldeep takes 10 wickets with no runs conceded.
Rohit is far worse as captain than I thought he'd be.

Can't wait to see these oldies being shunted out of team permanently.

Shami averaging 33 odd over his last 18 games dating back to the previous World Cup. The guy barely plays any cricket I between tournaments and then makes it to World Cup squads because apparently we dont have anyone else.

Siraj gets his revenge on Avishka Fernando who hit him for 3 consecutive boundaries.

Last 3 years,

Shami 17 matches, 26 wickets, 33 avg

Bumrah 14 matches, 18 wickets, 38 avg

Nobody talks about Bumrah being benign in last 3 years. Not economical as well.

Shocking stat. I don't call out Bumrah because it's considered sacrilege by many Indian fans. Bumrah hasn't been the same bowler since his first back injury. Also I don't think he will play much longer.

I think Bumrah's generally been good in other formats and so escapes a lot of scrutiny

Suddenly Pandya cannot even touch 130 kph. Cricketers these days flaunt their washboard abs n all, gym selfies etc at the drop of a hat. Regarding actual fitness, cannot play 2 matches in a week in full throttle.

Till that point (early 2019) he was awesome. Since the back injury he has lost at least 5 kmph of pace and a bit of movement as well.
He still has the ability to produce a few moments of brilliance - lords and oval 2021. Still has the yorker ability.
The question though is he more interested in represnting MI or India? I wish BCCI take a more proactive role in managing our quicks thru the endless IPL. I wish at least 20 matches were lopped off the IPL. Hopefully we see the emergence of some young pace bowlers.

These funky field settings is a deterrent. Dont have the bowlers for that.

Rohit should bring another man at short third man area when Malik came to Bowl .most of runs scored against him in that areas

Umran is trundling at the moment. We have trundlers with better control.

Kuldeep Yadav amazing bowler.
Trust Indian team management to drop him next series though.

126-6 to 206-8. Reason you should have bowlers who know how to handle bat. Lame captaincy with funky field setup helped as well. India would have folded for 150

Rohit has been very poor as a leader, across formats. His MI captaincy lulled people into thinking that he can translate that expertise at international level too but so far its not been up to the mark.

My goodness. Nobody times the ball better than Shubman amongst contemporary players. Not even Bobby . Sorry PAK fans :p

Rohit will try to show that he still has it in him to be in our T20 team so expect some lusty blows from him.

Smallish targets are like potential banana skins and this game is proving to be one.

India will do this in real matches in world cup. Guaranteed. How many times we have seen this. Top order collapse. Let us see how their blue eyed boy react

The steel which used to be always there in our batting is completely gone now.

Lets hope these 2 can finish the job though.

KL Rahul is perfect for Middle Order. He should not open in LOI cricket ever again.

Too many dots being played by these 2.

This tuk tuk effort may come back to bite!

Perfect match practice for world cup as if our top order will fail in knockout match then this situation came .batter used to now rather than top 3 score inost of useless match.

Pant at 4 would have been nicer as you would have got a lefty there. Iyer needs a performance now next game otherwise Sanju fans on Twitter will go on a strike even though their hero is not even in the squad. :91: :inti

Indian tail is so long, even a lemur will feel embarrassed.

Axar on a champion team will be coming in at No.9. But he is No.7 in the batting order. Kuldeep will be No.11 on any team. :))

This is what class of KL Rahul brings, a proper player with proper technique who will win you ganes when situation is tough. Hacks like Kishan can only dream of playing such innings on such a pitch.

Batsmen like Kishan are needed at the top. He is the teams lottery ticket to get a quick 50 or a 100 when it is their day. Can be an absolute match winner. You do not want a RR of 5 after 10 overs in this day and age in ODI's.

Rahul is not suited for opening. He can go into a shell too quickly as he is not mentally strong. He is good against the old ball.

KL Rahul scored unbeaten 64 as India defeated Sri Lanka by 4 wickets in the second ODI at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday.

With the win, India also gained an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three-match series between the sides. India had won the first game by 67 runs.

Talking about Thursday's game, India did lose wickets at regular intervals in their chase of 216 but a low target meant they were always in the driver's seat.

Earlier, three-wicket hauls each from Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj helped Team India to bundle out Sri Lanka for 215. The hosts lead the three-match series 1-0 as they had defeated the visitors by 67 runs in the first ODI.

lol Where was he in the test. Ball was not turning one bit. Coming very slowly. Run rate was never a issue.

Pandya in subcontinent conditions is not adding much with either bat or bowl. He is a support batsman and a support bowler, that's it.

Also, Gill hasn't been convincing either. He has performances mostly vs the likes of Windies or Zimbabwe. Plays some elegant shots and then hits one to the fielder.

Gill was in sublime form today. Even the shot he got out was perfectly timed but not placed well.

His ODI record is very good. Scoring big in WI is no small deal. Also he did well in NZ. He just need to be positive and look to score like he did today than do a Rahul.

The 100 he got in Windies was on flat patta. When has he played any standout inning in ODIs vs any team? He generally scores on flat pitches when others have scored too otherwise he has hardly played any quality knock vs any quality team.

I remember the home series vs SA, he failed in those matches while Shreyas, Kishan and Samson stood up. At the moment, he is flashy and exciting to watch but hasn't played any knock which illustrates he has good temperament. That would be key if he has to start in the World Cups.

Hardik is a liability in ODIs. These days he cannot run, field or hit out. Can be kept quiet by pacers. Bowling is benign and can only bowl max 5 overs. In short, Vijay Shankar circa 2019.
Not sure if there are other options in domestics. Cannot rely on Axar as well.

If SL had scored above 250 today, pretty sure India would have lost from 86-4 situation. But this win will paper over cracks.

In short India are a couple of batsmen short. Except for Siraj and Kuldeep, no wicket takers as well.

This is 2019 WC revisited.

Gill is very loose and can get out anytime whether he is on 0, 40 or 80.

Hardik is a must in LOI format. He is the only one that can hit the long ball down the order and can also bowl decently(he has improved in recent times).

If you play one more batsman in his place, they are no better than him in hitting big and they also cannot bowl. India already has a long tail. Matters will only get worse without him.

Suryakumar Yadav can play instead of Pandya and he will be a big upgrade over him. :inti

He cannot hit big unless it is in his arc which top pacers would not give. He cannot bowl more than 5 overs in full throttle. Running between wickets and fielding have become very poor. There is no point picking him as an AR if he cannot do one skill properly.

One thing is clear. India cannot afford to play Shami/Siraj/Umran/Kuldeep as bowlers and Axar as bowling all rounder in the world cup. It can work against lesser teams. But against Big Boys, this strategy will be exposed badly.

Then who will be the 6th bowler? SKY is in competiontion with Shreyas (and with KL if Ishan plays). Venkatesh Iyer is the closest replacement for Hardik.

Has Pandya proved his match fitness by playing in domestic List A? If not, why is he given a free ride in the team so that he can decide he is available and get drafted straight to the first 11?
