As India gear up for the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval on Thursday, the team management will be closely evaluating their playing XI, especially in light of Jasprit Bumrah’s expected absence. The hosts England will be without their captain Ben Stokes, who has been ruled out of the Oval Test.

Reports from London suggest that Bumrah, India's pace spearhead, is likely to be rested. This development has sparked fresh debate over the bowling combination—particularly whether the team should include a third spinner in Kuldeep Yadav, who could emerge as a key wicket-taking option in the absence of Bumrah.

In the press conference on the eve of the Oval Test, India captain Shubman Gill didn't rule out Bumrah from India's Playing 11, saying, "We will take a decision tomorrow, wicket looks very green. So let’s see."

Teams for 5th Test

England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue.

India: Shubman Gill (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, N Jagadeesan (WK).

This has been a great series so it's a shame that for the final game that Stokes is injured and Bumrah is chickening out. It seems like a tame end to the series.

It's good to see Archer need another 4 year rest just after playing 2 test

Another positive news Loser stokes is not playing here

India is going to win this test

It's not going to be easy on a green wicket plus India have 35 average in Ranji IPL ftb Sudarshan at #3 & Flopswal can't hold a bat on seaming tracks. Pant is missing too. All depends on puppet, Rahul, Washy, Jurel & Jadeja.

Heaviest bowling workloads in the first four matches of a Test series since 2002

India's ongoing 2025 series in England features prominently in the list. With 1,566.3 overs bowled already, it ranks third on the list, just behind Australia’s 2008/09 tour of India (1,593.4 overs) and India’s 2014/15 tour of Australia (1,579.3 overs). This stat underscores how hard bowlers from both sides have had to work in this series, with pitches offering little respite and matches often stretching deep into the final days. Such prolonged bowling workloads can be mentally and physically draining, potentially influencing performances in the crucial final stages of the series.

I think they should make it a 4-Test series or a 3-Test series moving forward. It can be very hard on the bowlers to play 5 Tests. Main bowlers often get injured or get rested and medicore bowlers end up playing.

Why is it good to see a player like Archer carrying a niggle that stops him playing?

Your posts are getting weirder by the day.

Certainly a freehit for your team, but Archer wasn't injured but given a leeway for the upcoming Ashes

Kyun tere team ki 5 match khelna ki aukaad nahi isliye

So England is going with 4 Pacers plus quality spinners Brooks and Bethell :kp
Don’t be so arrogant bro. Root is the best ever
Brook is the best batsman in the world
Tongue will destroy our tail

Also Overton can bat

Will be very tough for rookie Indian team. Hopefully we can pull it off

But I have seen enough to know this team will be good in the future

Young Indians made stokes bowl 140 overs His next highest in a series was way back in 2014. That is about 11 years back. 116 overs. India effectively broke him down.

STokes vs Pant/Gill/Jadeja/Rahul - 284/3 wickets 95 avge He has bowled 585 balls to these guys alone. close to 100 overs.

That guy will break down for sure. Very second test he was sending down pies at 80 mph. lol He probably will be bowling at same pace as Kamboj at the Oval. They knew that. They pulled him out.

Most probably Karun Nair is replacing Shardul Thakur as India's batting is weak after Pant's injury.

Hopefully Arshdeep plays on this green wicket, no more Prasidh.

Spot on. A good analysis.

(Interesting that I made a similar point about Bumrah/England in another thread and got rounded on by India fans)

I think Bumrah is on a physical decline regardless of what English batsmen have done.

His pace was down in the 3rd Test itself despite a break in between.

Stokes on the other hand was extremely impressive for 7 bowling innings before being worn down by the Indian batters.

Plus Stokes has always been injury prone even at the time of his international debut he was not cleared to bowl. And his batting helps the team immensely to the point bowling is considered as his secondary job.

I think it's been reversed in recent years. His bowling is more of a threat. More of a bowling allrounder these days.

Takes wickets when others can't and the way he's bowled this series has been incredible .

But remains to be seen how long he can sustain this, since he's already 34.

Might be easier now that he virtually plays no white ball cricket.

#ENGvIND top stats so far
Most runs: Shubman Gill (722 in 8 innings)
Most wickets: Ben Stokes (17 in 8 innings)
Most catches: Harry Brook (9 in 8 innings)

Washout, England have won this series 2-1. That 2nd test stings and has ruined my prediction. But otherwise I was right

His bowling has always had bite. That was known since his pre international days. His bowling average used to be around 26 back then if i remember correctly. In presence of Broad and Anderson, he didn't really get as big of an opportunity to show off his bowling skills for a big chunk of time. Now that they've forced Anderson into retirement, the current attack has looked toothless, and Stokes became the defacto leader of the bowling attack.

England's bowling looks decent , except for Overton ; pity if his batting ability was considered . Hoping for a spicy pitch where bowlers dominate .

You are right, but I'm not sure how much can be attributed to India and how much to Stokes stubbornness to bowl. Seems like a bit of a messiah complex. He bowled brilliantly but part of me was wondering whether he should trust his other bowlers more too.

Looks like google lied. Rain isnt prevalent according to cricinfo.

But idk, anyone living in London? Please verify

Credit to the way we batted, but I also find it admirable that Stokes bowled his heart out. As did Bumrah.

Pity so many nuances (and obvious facts) of the game are lost because of constant, thin skinned trolling by a few.

Final Predictions for this Match

1) Gill fails, Jaiswal has another medicore run, India crumble due to fatigue of the 5th test.

2) England score 400 runs with Brooks scoring a century. Root likely wont perform due law of averages catching up.

3) Ollie Pope proves to be a surprise captain and gets the 3rd win

A gloomy morning is awaiting. Raining since few hours and more rain forecast at 11AM when match will Start.

Perfect condition for bowling side , Toss become important factors but india never win any toss so advantage England

:kp

Congrats to all PPers and @mominsaigol in particular.

We gonna get destroyed.
Mate, if you really wanna know the true reason I wanted England to win, it was due to Ashes.

I want it to be a spicy series and not a rubbish one sided one, I am still supporting Aus for that series.

If India had won, then Aus would win as well as they'd be dealt with a serious mental blow

Getting rounded on by Indian fans means you have written something truthful and factual.

Indian fans tend to be anti-truth, anti-facts, and pro-fake news. :inti
England are biggest frauds

New article says they rig balls now lmao.
Baz and stokes are biggest scammers. Hand picking balls from that swing more once the new ball wears out.
Very crafty and misleading. They should be severely punished for this.

Pathetic of England to resort to such cheap measures

As lots of commentators said, its bowler captian complex. They will feel that they have to show the leadership by bringing them in to action for everytime.Cummins also does the same. I recollect even pollack too. am sure akram and waqar may have done that.their ego won't let it go as they are good.

Its better Indian Captains don't walk to toss, because the result is already known. Better the opposition makes their choice right away! I think Azhuruddin was the last captain who was winning more tosses for India! (Was Dhoni lucky with the tosses too...? I didn't quite observe!)

Useless Jaiswal has been avg 36 this series. Crap player. Like I said from the beggining

The likes or Cameron Green, Harry Brooks etc etc will dominate the next era.

India going with 8 players who can bat, on a pitch where there is considerable grass is acceptable.

But who are going to pick up those 20 wickets ??

I hope Krishna delivers..!!

:kp

Yeah thats what I meant .
I'm genuinely starting to believe England, aus and nz have figured out a way to win tosses.

Idk maybe they are trained in the art of figuring it out when the toss is in the air and the captains call it.

As to why India fails, maybe the coin has a glare :vk2

Unbelievable they are not playing Arshdepe. But prasidh is playing. May be they are playing for bounce. That guy is not an effective short ball bowler

I refuse to watch India bat. Will watch scorecard and only watch my england team bat.

These boys gotta get ready for ashes.

Australia is winning ashes that much ik but I still want root to score

Patience remains the key for a test match bowler.
On green surfaces bowlers can easily get carried away and look to pick wicket every ball

Will India bat like cowards again? Is this the standard of the test team now? Playing for draws?
