India [297 & 343/7d] beat West Indies [222 & 100] by 318 runs in the 1st Test, lead series 1-0

50 for Kohli. Let me guess it's a useless 50, but if Pujara scored it would be a clutch knock.

No one ever questioned kohli's test batting ability. One of the best test players ever but in odi he lacks ability in clutch matches.

India stamped their authority on this first Test match on day three, an unbroken 104-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane helping India to a 260-run lead with seven wickets in hand.

The morning session probably belonged to West Indies. Resuming play on 189/8, Jason Holder farmed the strike well to keep Miguel Cummins safe. The pair ended up putting on a partnership of 41, to which Cummins contributed no runs. When Holder was dismissed by Mohammed Shami, Cummins decided to go on the attack, and was bowled by Jadeja with the first aggressive shot he played. A forty-five ball duck, the fifth-longest in Test history.

And a valuable one, it felt. West Indies put on 43 from their overnight score, dismissed for a double Nelson and trailing India by a manageable 75. A few early wickets and it’d be level pegging.

KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal did well to see off the new ball, and it was the spin of Roston Chase that did for both openers. First Agarwal, given out LBW missing a sweep shot. It seemed too plumb for a review, but Ball-tracker showed it missing the leg-stump – high and wide. There was no doubt about Rahul’s wicket, though, as he went to paddle sweep a ball that kept a little low, and clattered into middle and leg stump.

Pujara departed in the next over to an absolute beauty from Kemar Roach, who bowled brilliantly all day and deserved more than his one wicket. What a rare sight it is to see Pujara cut in half, and clean bowled with the ball clipping the top of off-stump. Tea was taken with India 98/3, and a sense that momentum was building in the home side’s camp.

The evening session, however, saw the game taken away from them. Rahane rode his luck – he was dropped by John Campbell at cover on 14, and later survived a strong LBW appeal, both from the bowling of Roach. Holder decided not to review, suspecting an edge, but the two noises were both from the pad and three red lights came up on the stadium screen.

Kohli and Rahane ground out the session, against some underwhelming bowling from part-time spinners Brathwaite and Campbell. They closed the day on 185/3, a lead of 260, with the partnership standing at 104. It included just five boundaries. West Indies will need a bundle of quick wickets tomorrow morning if they’re to remain competitive in this one.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has put his weight firmly behind India limited overs vice captain Rohit Sharma, asking skipper Virat Kohli and the Indian team management to include the stylish right-hander in India’s playing XI for their first match of World Test Championships against West Indies starting Thursday at Antigua.

Terming Rohit a ‘match-winner’, Akhtar said overlooking him for the first Test against West Indies will be ‘wrong’.

“I know Rohit has been given chances to play in the Test format earlier and he has not been able to grab on to the opportunity. But I believe he should be included in the team. He is a big match-winner, and not including him will be wrong. He is in good form and he should be given a chance right away,” Akhtar said in a video posted on his official Youtube channel.

“When you have selected him into the squad, leaving him out of the playing XI should not be an option. I believe he will showcase his talent in the longest format of the game, he will become a great player in the Test format as well,” he added.

The Indian team was knocked out of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup after losing the semi-final match against New Zealand. But the team seems to have recovered well, as the Men in Blue defeated West Indies in the recently concluded T20I and ODI series.

India defeated West Indies 3-0 in T20Is whereas they outclassed them 2-0 in the three-match ODI series.

“The team has recovered well after the World Cup setback, and I believe they will perform well against West Indies in the Test series,” Akhtar said.

India takes on West Indies in the first Test match at Antigua later today.

The series will be part of the World Test Championship.

Akhtar talking nonsense. Rohit is 32 and is no match winner in this format . Would just be a cover for any injured batsman .

Lets see if West Indies can match Ashes:D

WI 222
IND 297, 280/4 (99.0) CRR: 2.83
Day 4: 1st Session - India lead by 355 runs

Compared to ashes this series is so dull and boring. WI is the worst place after SL to play tests.

Even Kohli, pujara, shastri and all Indian team was watching ashes while the match is still going on lol.

Bumrah in the middle of a great spell.

Ishant has improved leaps and bounds over the past two years.

WHat the heck. They are way too unpredictable. Either they show so much doggedness. Having said that those two wickets from Bumrah was a dream for a fast bowlers. Sending stumps cartwheeling. Both great balls.

Obviously Bumrah Is great man but be honest as an Indian fan this is such a ridiculous series playing Sri Lanka or West Indies like come on and playing the likes of bumrah against them this is a club level windies team at most we have ashes on one side and than this mediocre team ruining test cricket

Windies is a better Test side. They proved against England with a 2-1 win.

Chase is a tough man to dismiss. They have hope and holder. Not easy to run through them like they did with first 5 batsmen.

That happens once in a while Sri Lanka defeating South Africa but 99/100 times this windies team would be blown away

It is not easy to win tests by fluke. WI dominated them. But for the ban of Holder it could have been a white wash.

I think it's primarily because of Ishant. In the last year and a half , he has swumg the ball more than any other test bowler.

Short and wide sharma after so many years realized his stock ball was inswing lol. He became famous for that. Somewhere in between he forgot that. Probably after his first IPL season.

Another unplayable delivery. He did his best to cover the off stump. That was apeach. Would have taken out most batsman. Moved a touch. But just enough to send the stumps cartwheeling. 3rd time he has done that.

Absolutely destroyed Finch with that inswinger. The kookaburra doesn't swing for long but since they use the Dukes in the windies, he's swinging it a lot just like he did in England.

Holder has no clue against Bumrah's outswingers. When did he become Dale steyn lol Never seen him bowl like this. May be because it is duke.

Would you guys believe India left the team that had Greenidge, Haynes, Ricahrds reeling at 25/6? IN 1989 they did that. India was all out for 75. WI was 25/6 then ended up with 127. Batting got easier and easier. Last day became the best time to bat on. Richards chased 276 with easily with a century.

Impressed by Rolton chase's defensive technique. He negotiated some of the peaches from Bumrah very well.

Bumrah bowling beautifully, just look at swing he is extracting each ball.

Most his wickets this innings has been perfect swing bowleds

Also he is bowling on a trot here, started the innings with first over and still bowling everyother over and its 16th over and 8tj for himself

As much as you criticize WI batting, these balls from Bumrah are unplayable stuffs. 90 mph late swing. It is very very hard to negotiate. 4th bowled.

Gotta appreciate chase here, when rest are blown away like cards.his defence seems exceptional against swing

At this rate India can bowl them out one more time. Nobody has clue against pace and movement from Bumrah, Ishant, Shami.

Gotta admit this as a Pakistani (bowling) fan.

India has currently the best bowling unit of India.

They don't compromise on the speed like they used to do before. No 130 kph balls and 125 kph balls in second or third spell.

Even though this India's win was not a surprise i suggest you guys watch the highlights if you had not seen it. Fans of fast bowlers will enjoy the mode of dismissals.

Angel gone. 50/9. Edged through to keeper. But for useless overs from Jadeja the score would have been even lower.

Yes. It is a treat to watch these bowlers bowl full throttle in the Test arena.

Bumrah bowled some absolute peaches which rattled the stumps.

Ishant what are you doing man. FUll swing balls work fine. Why are you bowling short and getting hit for 6.

Yeh right lollll...so you must think stokes also hecked his way to eng win?

This is the kind of length that Australia should have bowled to leach whenever they got a chance. They were bowling bouncers to Leach. Starc clean bowled Stokes in the world cup by bowling full when he looked threatening in the league phase.

We all were surprised seeing bouncers being bowled to leech one aftee another even if he easily ducked most of them...it was ridiculous to see from aussies

Even though i wanted eng to win.it was actually aussies brainfade that saved leech and eng

Seee this is why we hate virat the captain, what a noob of a capt...i dont think bumrah is too tired to bowl and finish it with 1-2 more overs but this guy just sux at some obvious decisions

Seriously dumb. This is exactly India missed a few wins. Being unable to nip out the tailender.

WI bowled out for 100. India was far too complacent at 50/9. Highest number of overseas win by an Indian captain is now Kohli beating Ganguly.

Most away Test wins for India captains

12 VIRAT KOHLI (26 Tests)
11 Sourav Ganguly (28)
06 MS Dhoni (30)
05 Rahul Dravid (17)

Had to do with the bowlers Kohli has.

Nonetheless a great achievement for him and his team.

Enjoy the win!

Thanks. Good that they are having a test championship. It should motivate all teams to do their best.

Yeah definitely it will motivate all teams to win the championship.

Let’s get ready for more entertaining matches.

Abhi toh party shuru huyi hai.

This stupid captain needs to be sacked ...too many politics from him

Why do you think it is an useless victory. WI is not such a bad Test side at their home.
what is the use of these victories against a D grade team....we cannot beat Australia and England in tests ...we cannot win tournaments in ODIs....as long as that Kohli is in the team....he needs to be sacked

WHy is it D grade team? They beat Engand 2-1. We did beat Australia. We are world no.1 ranked Test side. It is irrelevant Kohli is a good captain or bad captain, but Indian team is a good team.

I don't give a Damn about world cup. just win the world test championships which india is fully capable of. Its a rubbish rule btw. Playing one test away for a go so. should be 2 legged home and away and maybe even a decider on a neutral ground.

hopefully one of india or pakistan win it.

kohli maybe a choker in odi but india are s beast test team. India are also a great odi side but for some reason they have become chokers due to poor selection bias.

agreed. if ganguly had these bowlers Jesus Christ he would have won all this drawn away games with ease.

Slightly disagree. Ganguly had this bad habit of going on the defensive after first test win. He did that repeatedly. Rat is poor tactically. But he tries to win every test possible rather than just first test and go for draw in the remaining matches. He had guys like Srinath, Kumble, Bhajji all of them were very successful bowlers. Even Prasad was good in England and SA. HE had guys like Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman.

No such thing as a useless win anymore.

India just earned 60 pts.

But he never had a lethal combo like bumrah shami and ishant though. He lacked good 1st change bowlers. Third pacer especially. I would even say second cause venky was mediocre iirc. spinners yes we're elite. However jadeja and ashwin are better batsmen compared to them. this indian bowling trio is probably top 2 best attack in the world at the moment.

Extremely disappointing stuffs from West Indies. It felt like they didn't even try.

India are manhandling them at the moment.

Heartening to see Rahane scoring a hundred finally. Good game for Vihari as well. Bumrah bowled some peaches

Ajinkya Rahane’s first Test century in over two years laid the platform for India’s seamers to blow away West Indies’ top-order to secure their biggest ever away win (in terms of runs) in Test cricket.

After three relatively steady paced days of Test Cricket, the opening fixture of the two-Test series burst into life on the fourth day in Antigua as India got their ICC World Test Championship campaign off to a winning start.

Resuming the day on 185/3, West Indies got off to the ideal start, with Roston Chase extracting a leading edge from India skipper Virat Kohli. The Windies would have harboured hopes of running through the Indian middle-order to leave themselves with a chaseable fourth innings target.

Rahane continued his fine first-innings form and with Hanuma Vihari, the pair helped India establish a towering lead. After his 81 earlier in the Test, Rahane was determined to notch a first Test century in over two years. That determination paid off as he registered a 10th Test century – a welcome return to form for one of this India side’s most experienced players.

Looking to increase the scoring rate, Rahane fell soon after reaching the landmark, trying to hit Shannon Gabriel over the in-field, only to be caught by Windies skipper Jason Holder at mid-off. Vihari played superbly, eventually falling seven runs short of what would have been a maiden Test hundred. His dismissal signalled the end of the India innings as Virat Kohli declared with India on 343/7, leaving West Indies needing to 419 to win.

West Indies were never in the run chase. In a spectacular opening burst, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah combined to leave West Indies 15/5 at the tea interval. Wickets continued to fall after the break as Bumrah collected figures of 8-4-7-5 to leave West Indies 50/9. West Indies’ final pair, Kemar Roach and Miguel Cummins then put on a show for the Antigua crowd, compiling 50 quickfire runs for their side to offer a rare glimmer of light on an otherwise testing day for the hosts.

Sharma took the final wicket to a 318-run win for India, their largest in terms of runs away from home in their Test history. The victory also saw them claim 60 points in their ICC World Test Championship opener. The second Test of the series starts on August 30thin Kingston, Jamaica.

'We fell short quite a few runs' – Jason Holder rues West Indies' batting failure

West Indies captain Jason Holder rued his team's failure with the bat as the hosts went down to India by 318 runs in the first of the two-match Test series on Sunday, 25 August.

West Indies scored 222 runs in response to India's 297 in the first innings, handing the visitors a 75-run lead. Then, chasing a daunting 419 in the fourth innings with a little over four sessions of play left in the game, the hosts found themselves at a hopeless 15/5 at Tea.

It took only 26.5 overs for the Indian bowlers to bundle out West Indies for 100, their lowest-ever total against India in Tests.

"We fell short quite a few runs and I think the wicket was very good for the batting," said Holder. "At the initial phase, when the ball is new, it is difficult as a batsman to sustain, but after that it becomes easy. We did not get enough runs in this game."

The West Indies captain was all praise for Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who returned a brilliant 5/7 in his eight-over spell. "Today Bumrah bowled some magic balls and he got few of our batsmen out with some very good balls. We have to find ways. He is a quality bowler, but definitely there is a solution out there.

"Ishant [Sharma] was very supportive as well as [Mohammed] Shami. It was just one of those spells, where the opposition gets on the top and stays on the top. We have seen that happening around the world."

In the morning, India's firm hold on the Test was consolidated by Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari, the duo putting on 135 for the fifth wicket. Vihari, who registered his career-best score of 93, credited centurion Rahane for the support.

“Rahane was helping me out with the way bowlers were bowling, because he batted for a long time in the first innings as well," Vihari said. "He was helping me out with what the wicket was playing like.

“I came here early with India A team, so I had that experience of these conditions and that came handy for me. I know how the wicket would play, and I was fortunate enough to get those runs for the team."

Vihari, 25, was also full of praise for Bumrah, who registered his fourth five-wicket haul in only his 11th Test. "Bumrah was not happy with his performance in the first innings himself, and he thought he did not bowl up to his standards," said Vihari.

"He was quite fired up in the second innings. He is a champion bowler. We did not play Tests in the last six months, so he was struggling in the first innings to get his rhythm back.”

The second Test will be played at Kingston, starting on 30 August.
