An army chopper carrying Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat and 13 others crashed today in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force said.

Five bodies have been found from the crash site and two have been taken to hospital with severe burn injuries. More details are not known so far.

General Rawat's wife, his Defence Assistant, security commandos and Indian Air Force personnel were reportedly among the 14 on board.

The Indian Air Force confirmed in a tweet that the Chief of Defence Staff was on the flight. He had taken a flight from Delhi to Sulur earlier today and that flight manifest had nine people.

"An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident."

An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.

The crash took place in the Nilgiris, shortly after the Mi-series chopper took off from the army base in Sulur in Coimbatore.

The chopper was heading to the Defence Staff Services College in Wellington in the Nilgiris.

Visuals showed the wreckage scattered on the hillside and rescuers at work, struggling through thick smoke and fire and uprooted trees. Bodies were taken away by locals and policemen.

General Rawat, 63, took charge as India's first Chief of Defence Staff in January 2019. The position was set up with the aim of integrating India's three services - the Army, the Navy and the Air Force.

He was later also appointed the head of the newly-created Department of Military Affairs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have been briefed about the crash.

Heart breaking tragedy for all involved.

Bipin Rawat and his wife are apparently alive with 80% burns to their bodies, his chances of survival are bleak. I hope they do not survive, if they do, life would be hell for the both.

Prayers with all families and victims...

RIP

It boils my blood when i see laughing faces on tragic facebook posts such as these.

Hopefully their children are grownups. Still, a trautamtic news for them, losing both parents like that...

IMO, one should avoid helicopter to transport from point a to b, unless there is no other alternative.

I was just thinking about this. I'm generally not comfortable with flying, but I would be s*** scared to travel in a helicopter, having grown up reading stories of celebrities and politicians dying in helicopter crashes. I remember a famous south indian actress, an acting CM of an Indian state dying in a heli crash, a Thai Premier league club owner dying in a crash just outside the stadium and of course, Kobe Bryant and his daughter dying in a helicopter crash along with the crew on board. And now this.

Of course, planes do crash as well, but I get the feeling helicopters are a lot more dangerous than flights.

Even the one surviving member would have a high degree of burns. Hope he pulls through though.

General Bipin Rawat, who died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, was India's most senior defence official.

He was appointed as the country's first chief of defence staff (CDS) in 2019, and previously served as the chief of India's one-million strong army.

The 63-year-old had the reputation of being a tough soldier and an inspiring commander, who sometimes sparked controversy with his comments on political developments.

Gen Rawat was born on 16 March 1958 in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand.

His father was a lieutenant general in the Indian Army and his mother was the daughter of a politician.

A top student during his military training, Gen Rawat was awarded the "Sword of Honour" at the National Defence College and the Indian Military Academy.

He also completed a training course with the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

India's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat inspects the Guard of Honour, at South Block lawns, on January 1, 2020 in New Delhi, India.

He joined his father's military unit, 11 Gorkha Rifles, in 1978.

After that, he served in several key posts in the army, specialising in high-altitude warfare and counter-insurgency operations.

He was a decorated officer who often commanded units in restive regions in the country.

In the 1980s, as an army colonel, Gen Rawat commanded his battalion along the Line of Actual Control in the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh during a military stand-off with China.

In 2015, when he was in charge of the 3 Corps, Gen Rawat initiated India's first officially declared surgical strikes on foreign territory when he sent troops of a para-commando battalion to attack Naga rebels inside Myanmar after an ambush on Indian troops.

In the same year, he survived a helicopter crash in the north-eastern state of Nagaland.

In 2016, he took over as India's 27th Indian army chief, superseding two officers who were senior to him.

The following year, India sparked an international controversy when it awarded a medal to an army officer who tied a civilian to the front of his jeep in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Gen Rawat had defended the move, describing the officer's actions as an "innovation" in a "dirty war".

"People are throwing stones at us, people are throwing petrol bombs at us. If my men ask me what do we do, should I say, just wait and die? I will come with a nice coffin with a national flag and I will send your bodies home with honour. Is it what I am supposed to tell them as chief? I have to maintain the morale of my troops who are operating there," he said.

In 2019, the government of Narendra Modi set up the position of CDS to improve coordination between India's army, navy and air force.

The new chief also had control over funding for the military.

When he took charge, Gen Rawat faced criticism over his alleged closeness to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He always denied these accusations.

His critics said some of his statements went against the "apolitical" tradition of India's military.

He once described the rise of the Muslim-dominated All India United Democratic Front party in Assam as a national security threat, which led minority leaders to accuse him of "parroting" the BJP's line.

In recent months, the general was focusing on modernising the military.

Under Gen Rawat's leadership, the process of military integration had taken off, though integrated theatre commands hadn't yet been formed for the three forces.

A great loss to the nation. Heartfelt condolences to the family of Gen Bipin Rawat and to the families of all those whose lost their lives in the tragic chopper crash. Om shanti

RIP General Rawat.
Apparently we have 3 Augusta Westland AW101 VVIP helicopters still parked in one of Air force's hangers totally unused. (AW was blacklisted after the scam).
We ordered 12 of those back in 2010 primarily for VVIP transport.
But we are still flying Soviet Era helicopters in 2021 even when we have better helicopters parked in hangers.

Mi-17- V5s in IAF is relatively new getting in service in 2012. but no HTAWS in Indian Mi-17 . thats strange.

Mi-17 is becoming unreliable day by day. too many crashes all over the world.

Pak Army uses Agustawestland for Army chief and VVIPs for some reasons ..... we have total 12 helicopters in service and 4 on order .

Yes, apparently the accident was actually an attack by hypothetical tamil insurgents which is supported by the ruling party in TN as it's supposedly anti Hindu and anti Indian (the ruling party in TN has a strong atheistic ideology).

Reports say the chopper was very safe. Rawat upset many people including many Indian generals who most likely wanted to get rid off him. I think Ajit Doval and he were not be best of friends either.

I don't think this was an accident. The army chief of one of the world's largest armies and economies in the world doesn't just die in a chopper crash, there's definitely more to this but this will probably be an unsolved mystery.

If you know the geography of the region and the climate during this time, you wouldn't say this. He is not important to figure enough, nor we are in the middle of a war to have someone infiltrate Tamil Nadu out of all places and take down the chief.

For a very long time, after Punjab, Tamil Nadu used to contribute the 2nd most to the Indian military up until the early 1990s. That has come down a lot due to the Congress/BJP politics and lack of patriotism that resulted by jingoism as well as special interest that set Tamil Nadu back. But this is purely an accident.

There's most likely foul play involved. From what I've read the weather conditions were clear at the time and this was a pretty new and reliable chopper that is used for dignatiries in India. Many Indians suspect foul play, could be China or maybe a local insurgent group or even people within the military/intel establishment. This more than just an accident.

Why does this atheistic party so interested in keeping control of hindu temples?

Most of the temples in TN are centuries old temples. Of course, the state should take control of it, unless we have the descendants of the Cholas, Pallavas and the Pandyas waiting to take over the temples.

New Delhi: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat was alive when he was pulled out of the crashed IAF Mi-17V5 chopper, a fireman who was part of the rescue team said. The rescuer said the late CDS also told his name when he was being evacuated from the wreckage of the IAF helicopter. Besides, CDS Rawat, another person was also extricated from the wreckage, who was later identified as Group Captain Varun Singh, the lone survivor in the accident.

The fireman claimed that when CDS Rawat was pulled out of the wreckage of the Mi-17V5 helicopter, he told his name and died on his way to the hospital, a report published in ToI stated.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, Brigadier LS Lidder, the military advisor to the Chief of Defence Staff, and staff officer Lt Col Harjinder Singh, Wing Commander PS Chauhan, Squadron Leader K Singh, JWO Das, JWO Pradeep A, Havildar Satpal, Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitender Kumar, Lance Naik Vivek Kumar and Lance Naik Sai Teja were killed when their IAF Mi-17 helicopter crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district on the afternoon of December 8, 2021.

Looks to be extremely foggy. It is a popular hill station from my place and it's where the Chayya Chayya song was shot, there usually is a lot of fog over there. Madness to travel in a chopper in such weather conditions.

The chopper seems to have been flying too low close to the terrain. A case of CFIT?

NDTV: "He Asked For Water...": Eyewitness Claims He Saw General Rawat After Crash
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told parliament that a tri-service inquiry has been set up to investigate the crash.

Coonoor: A witness at the site of the crash in Tamil Nadu that killed General Bipin Rawat and 12 others on Wednesday claims he saw the General alive moments after the wreckage was found in the hills.
Shiv Kumar, a contractor, was visiting his brother - he works in a tea estate -- when the helicopter crashed yesterday afternoon near Coonoor in the Nilgiris.

Shiv Kumar claims he saw the Air Force chopper bursting into flames and falling. He and others rushed to the site.

"We saw three bodies fall...one man was alive. He asked for water. We pulled him out in a bedsheet and he was taken away by rescuers," Shiv Kumar told NDTV.

He says three hours later, someone told him the man he spoke to was General Bipin Rawat, and showed him a photo of the Chief of Defence Staff.

"I could not believe that this man did so much for the country...and could not even get water. I could not sleep all night," Shiv Kumar said, tearing up.

General Rawat reportedly died on the way to hospital.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told parliament that a tri-service inquiry has been set up to investigate the crash.

General Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 11 others were killed when the chopper crashed on its way to Wellington from the Sulur Air Force Base in Coimbatore.

The only survivor is Group Captain Varun Singh, who is being treated for severe burns at the military hospital in Wellington. According to Rajnath Singh, he is on life support.

The Mi17 V5 helicopter took off from Sulur Air Base at 11:48 am on Wednesday and was expected to land at Wellington by 12:15 pm. But the chopper went off the radar around 12.08 pm.

The black box has been recovered and could help investigators understand why the helicopter crashed.

NDTV: Defence Minister's Statement On General Bipin Rawat's Crash: Complete Text
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his condolences to the families of those who died. The Parliament also observed a silence in honour of the departed souls.

With profound grief and heavy heart, I stand to convey the unfortunate news of the crash of the military helicopter in the noon of 8th December 2021, with India's first Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Bipin Rawat onboard.

Gen Bipin Rawat was on a scheduled visit to Defence ServicesStaff College, Wellington to interact with the student Officers. The Air Force Mi 17 V 5 helicopter took off from Sulur Air Base at 11:48 AM yesterday and was expected to land at Wellington by 12:15 PM. Air Traffic Control at Sulur Air Base lost contact with the helicopter at approximately 12:08 PM.

Subsequently, few locals spotted a fire in the forest near Coonoor and rushed to the spot where they observed the wreckage of military helicopter engulfed in flames. Rescue teams from the local administration in the vicinity reached the site and attempted to recover the survivors from the crash site.

All those recovered from the wreckage were rushed to the Military Hospital, Wellington. Latest reports have confirmed that out of the total 14 persons onboard the ill-fated helicopter, 13 have succumbed to their injuries. The dead include the spouse of the CDS, Mrs Madhulika Rawat, his Defence Adviser Brig Lakhbinder Singh Lidder, Staff Officer Lt Col Harjinder Singh and nine other Armed Forces personnel including the Air Force helicopter crew. Their names are Wing Commander Prithvi Singh Chauhan, Squadron Leader Kuldeep Singh, Junior Warrant Officer Rana Pratap Das, Junior Warrant Officer Arakkal Pradeep, Havildar Satpal Rai, Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitendra Kumar, Lance Naik Vivek Kumar, Lance Naik B Sai Teja. Group Captain Varun Singh is on life support in the Military Hospital at Wellington and all efforts are being made to save his life.

A tri Service enquiry regarding the incident has been ordered by Indian Air Force, headed by Air Marshal Manvendra Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Training Command.

Do you believe the same of Zia-ul-Haq as well?

Most of the temples in TN are centuries old temples. Of course, the state should take control of it, unless we have the descendants of the Cholas, Pallavas and the Pandyas waiting to take over the temples.

These temples belong to Hindus and not the government. Govt has no right to interfere into the workings of hindu places of worship. These are not public parks.

Has govt taken over mosques and churches or are they run by the Waqf board and Christian organizations?

Sooner rather than later hindus will take control of their temples and their funds from this govt.

Already the Madras high court has twice stopped the government from trying to use the temple funds for govt schemes etc.

It's no foul play. You would be shocked to know how many Indian VIPS have lost their lives in helicopter crashes. There have been at least five to six chief ministers killed in the last 15 years. Bipin Rawat himself survived a helicopter crash in 2015.
While India's civil aviation record is quite good as far as airplanes are concerned, helicopters are another story. We had an airline operating only helicopters (Pawan Hans) which went defunct due the number of groundings/crashes in their fleet.
And as for the IAF, their Russian built machines do keep falling out of the air at regular intervals.

Those tweets were from the usual suspects, and the tamil insurgents they were talking about is the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army, an outfit that has been defunct for almost 30 years. :inzi2

I didn't know one existed, even 30 years before.

The helicopter carrying India's defence chief seemed to be flying unusually low before it ploughed into a hillside in heavy fog and went up in flames, killing him and 12 others on board, two eyewitnesses said on Thursday.

Construction worker Jayaseelan was at home near the southern Indian town of Coonoor when he heard the distinctive rumble of a helicopter closing in. After hearing a crash, he rushed outside.

"I saw smoke billowing out of the woods and an odd cracking sound. The helicopter had crashed near my brother's house," said Jayaseelan, 57, who only uses one name.

The craft had taken off from the nearby Sulur Air Base just before noon on Wednesday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told parliament. The base lost contact with it around 20 minutes later, just before it was due to land in the cantonment town of Wellington.

Military helicopters ply this route often, but this one seemed louder and closer as it travelled through heavy fog, according to Jayaseelan and another eyewitness, Satish Kumar.

Inside the machine was General Bipin Rawat - hand-picked by the government in 2019 to serve as India's first armed forces head - along with his wife and a dozen other defence personnel. Only one passenger, an Air Force captain, survived the accident.

'Crying in pain'

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, Jayaseelan and two other local residents said they struggled to reach the wrecked Russian-designed Mi-17 V5 helicopter because of the intensity of the flames engulfing it.

Emergency services arrived shortly after, but the hilly terrain meant they had trouble reaching the site with firefighting equipment, said Kumar, 45, who lives nearby.

"Out of the first four people brought out from the crash site, one was alive," he said. "He was crying in pain."

Wrapped in blankets provided by locals, rescue workers and defence personnel began extricating the bodies. Some were badly burnt, Jayaseelan said.

Within an hour of the accident, into which the Air Force has ordered an inquiry, Jayaseelan said the area was flooded with policemen, defence personnel and firemen.

"The police asked us if we saw anyone suspicious or armed in the woods," he said. "We told them we hadn't seen anyone like that."

I didn't know one existed, even 30 years before.

The tributes paid by ordinary Tamils, shouts of " veera Vanakkam" when the ambulance carrying the remains of the CDS passed through the roads, showed the feelings of the Tamils.

Yes Tamils have a strong regionalistic sentiment, but at the end of the day, the love for the tricolour unites us all.

It seems the helo was flying in dense fog. If it doesn't have TAWS (Terrain Avoidance and Warning System), it should not have been allowed. Helicopters only fly in fog when equipped with the proper instrumentation. These flights are conducted under Instrument Flight Regulations (IFR) and are permissible provided that the pilot is qualified for flying in this flight regime, and the helicopter possesses the necessary instrumentation. Many small helicopters are not so equipped, and can only be operated under Visual Flight Regulations (VFR). Most civilian helicopter operations are under VFR conditions; the military often times operates under IFR conditions as the helicopters are larger, more sophisticated and capable.

Tragic. RIP.

Raises several questions and doubts - IAF pilot(s), ground technician crew, pre-flight inspection officer, HAL, Kazan Helicopter etc. The level of incompetence is unbelievable and unparalleled.

Well we know that. TN in fact contributed the largest amount to the relief fund during the '71 war and Kargil war martyr widows' fund. I remember being on the streets along with my fellow school students to collect funds for the Gujarat earthquake, house by house (and being chased by house dogs:yk).

It's the BJP supporters who were buying into the conspiracy theories that the helicopter was attacked by insurgents in TN, apparently because TN is under the rule of "anti hindu" and "anti national" Dravidianists, so much so that it required the state BJP IT cell to defend the state against their national IT cell colleagues. And that's the problem with the BJP supporters - they conflate political ideology and religious affiliation with nationalism.

Even most of the comments were like the crowd was the majority while the Periyar loving Dravidianists were the fringe, not knowing that almost everyone in TN adores Periyar and his rational ideology, 90% vote for either the DMK or the ADMK, both Dravidian parties and the BJP's idea of religious nationalism is probably the least popular ideology here. Yet that doesn't mean the people aren't patriotic because political affiliation does not mean nationalism.

Add to this, the ambulance carrying the remains was also involved in an accident.

I've been to that place, it's a very popular hill station and is notorious for its sudden fog. The weather could be clear, but suddenly fog would descend out of nowhere and you can barely see what's in front of you. Even the vehicles are instructed to drive very slowly on the roads when that happens to avoid accidents.

Seems poor decision making to have had the chopper flying into the heavy fog. I heard the helicopter doesn't have the terrain warning system. Looks like a case of CFIT.

No! I am not buying this was an accident when Rawat's trip to wherever he was going was a short one. Also when a person of authority is travelling a heli is checked many times before take off. India has been trying to balance it's relationship with Russia and America over the past few weeks. The American's were not happy with India over Modi's recent meeting with Putin then there is the China factor as well. Even within the Indian army Rawat had many enemies too.

Rawat was murdered no doubt about it. India unable to do much against Russia, America or China understandably has to make it appear as an accident. Rawat has been terminated by politicians and Indian generals for what they see as the greater good of the country.

Yes pretty sure IAF would know how the sudden changes in weather pattern occur in that area and pilots would have been briefed. The pilot should have made a judgement call and aborted but might have been afraid to annoy the CDS.

We are all doing coulda woulda shoulda,. Hopefully the investigation would shed some light.

Pakistani IT cell trending in social media that a non existent insurgent outfit in Tamil Nadu brought down the helicopter using MANPADs.

BJP IT cell latching on to that and blaming Tamil Nadu because BJP doesn't win there. Lost a few brain cells reading a some tweets.

More than BJP, its from Congress , Kashmir and Tamilans celebrating like festival:yk

Tamilians are celebrating? Really?

I have relatives and friends all over TN, and none has seen any celebration. Please don't fall for propaganda.

The only ones celebrating were some kashmiri muslims and the left cabal including congis.

Tamils have done the nation proud with their rescue efforts before army reached the crash site.

The people of Nilgiris literally jumped into raging fire to extricate the victims.

Sorry I meant on social media, not general public.
Don't know who is sponsoring to those handlers.

‘Woke, opinionated, next Gurmehar Kaur’ — Twitter bullies force Aashna Lidder to close account

New Delhi: Not even a day has passed since the last rites of Brigadier Lakhbinder Singh Lidder were performed, but his daughter, Aashna Lidder, has become a target for bullies on social media platform Twitter.

Several Twitter users targeted Aashna Lidder after “going through” her profile and trolled her for being “opinionated” and “woke”. Her account was deactivated after the trolling.

‘Woke’ is a term used to denote a person who is politically or culturally aware.

On Friday, NDTV journalist Arvind Gunasekar tweeted that the 16-year-old had deactivated her account owing to the harassment she faced on the social media platform.

Such a disgrace these sanghi trolls are. They don't even spare a girl who lost her Brigadier father just 3 days back in that helicopter crash.

They didn't spare Gurmehar Kaur too whose father was martyred during Kargil war. Almost all these trolls don't even have an idea what these 'woke' kids go through and they pass sermons on them.

The extent people go for ₹2.

All trolls are disgusting. Even the ones who celebrated Gen Rawat's death are no less.
Social media is full of such morons.

That's another low. To celebrate such an unfortunate death and that too of such a decorated soldier who gave his all for his country is as pathetic as it gets.

Many Indian's do seem to be happy with pictures of cakes and sarcastic emoji's being displayed on twitter and social media. The Indian media seems to be suggesting that the ISI and China are behind it without a shroud of evidence. My own opinion is that China is involved one way or another. There technology is very advanced moreover it does seem that the heli is struck by some rocket or something in how it catches fire. China raising questions on the Indian army's professionalism after Rawat's death is burning Indian media even more.

It definitely isn't. You just want it to be that way. You know how many of our fighter jets fall out of the sky in Indian Airforce ?

The truth is China doesn't really view India as an equal enemy. They are trying to compete with USA, not India. China isn't going to do some sneaky stuff, infiltrate in to Tamil Nadu and risk doing this. Someone will be easily replaced.

Wow. This is very low. Even by this troll army's standard.

Poor Aashna, lost her father and now getting harassed by this filth.

Most probably it was a combination of fog (accident), IAF's incompetence and old hardware.

But if it is an inside job or a murder, then who benefits most from it?

I think China just wanted to send India a polite reminder of whose boss. Rawat had been belittling China a bit to much recently then their are the recent fights between the two. The death of Rawat does greatly expose and embarrass the Indian military that they can't even protect their top man.
