What's new

India beat New Zealand in Super Over in fourth T20I, lead series 4-0

How's it an excuse?

Kudos to India for winning but NZ lost the match they gifted it to India and you can't deny that

Ofc its an excuse....
Nobody gets out knowlingly ,they make mistakes! Why they make mistakes ? Because the otherside is bowling the way they may not be comfortable with.

By your logic, there is not a single match won by any team based on thier strength...if someone score 100 off 50 you say bowlers gifted,if they win it from 10 off 10 you say batsman gifted..

You just dont like to give credit where its due.

As NZ have been considered really strong at home and india not having won any series, its only logical to think the home tigers crumbled under influence of indian strength.

I knew the game was over when it went to a super over.

How pathetic is it that I'm still worried about winning a match from 3 from 3 with wickets in hand.

NZ are not that strong at home.
We beat them 2-1 as well. Eng drew 2-2 (should have won).

I am sorry but I still can't make sense of what just happened. NZ had 2 set batsmen at crease who were tonking the ball all over. They had to make 11 runs off 12 balls with 7 wickets in hand (and 7 off the last 6 balls with still 7 wickets in hand). How do you lose from there is beyond me!

It was a school boys cricket from both sides.

But NZ team needs to see a psychiatrist or, even better, spend tonight in a sleazy local bar with Ravi Shashtri! Ravi bhai can only help them!

There's always a next time.

What is wrong with NZ?

Unacceptable level of choking. You just needed to play singles in the end.

Average of 46 with a strike rate of 126 is a waste for you? :inti

I had so many hopes on him being the next finisher that India so wanted. With that perspective I said the same. He is an underachiever , performer in IPL but did not translate into International success and fame.

He played a really good hand today and got India to a respectable total on this two-paced wicket. Calling him a waste is way too harsh.

I did not say he is waste, his ability is such wasted is what I meant. May be I did not quote it right. I mentioned his 100 also to recall he did not do as much as one expected of him.

He has barely been given any opportunities at all.

Never even tried at no. 4

He has the ability but did not achieve as much as one expected of him. In IPL he played some good innings, is what I read ( I do not watch IPL) and I saw his 100 in Aus which is one of the top innings from an Indian batsman in ODIs in Australia.

If you ask me on NZ grounds only bowlers like Malinga will be effective. Short boundaries, good batting surface, fast outfield. Bumrah is like him. But for some reason Bumrah has completely abandoned yorkers. No

Southee has never been a death bowler or even T20 bowler he was okay at his peak but he is also nearing retirement now. But NZ are stubborn like that they love giving player more and more chances with any accountability sometime they overdo nice stuff.

what I feared has happened. Thakur performing well & chances of him becoming a regular in the team.
The possibilities of his bowling getting carted (if he is selected) by WI or Aus or Eng batsmen in T20 WC are too high to be ignored. As such even Bumrah is getting punished, agree with that but that is on his off day.

As for shardul, his "off day" was today against the mentally shot NZ and he performed better. Anyway, if he proves me wrong, it will be very good to accept but those 3 teams are too strong to not encash the 130+ bouncers/length balls that thakur bowls.

Seven from six. Seven wickets in hand. Two set batsmen at the crease. It was all going New Zealand's way until it wasn't. If Mohammed Shami was the party spoiler in Hamilton, then Shardul Thakur ruined the night for the host in Wellington on Friday.

Thakur successfully defended seven off the final over in the fourth T20I as India went 4-0 up in the five-match T20I series. Needing 14 to win in the Super Over, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul got the visitor over the line with a ball to spare.

As it happened| Thakur, Rahul help India seal Super Over thriller in Wellington

"I'm feeling good, we play for such nail-biting finishes, we couldn't have asked for anything more in these two games," said Thakur after the match.

"After the last game we learnt that we should never lose hope. The wicket on the first ball of the last over was crucial because it made them nervous," he added. Thakur contributed with the bat as well, scoring 20 off 15 balls but the Mumbai cricketer feels he could've done better. "Good contribution from me with the bat, I should have carried on and hopefully I'll get more next time," he said.

Thakur is still useless but I fear Kohli likes him...

Washinton has serious self doubts under Kohli captaincy...

Dube is under cooked but if he plays along with Pandya, he can give a different dimension to the team..

Samson has a golden opportunity today but messed it up again...

Overall, 4-0 is wow...

Pandey did.

Thakur bowled 2 horrible overs and had some luck in the final one
Taking nothing away from pandey,He bought India back into the match with an excellent knock but just can't take away credit from thakur for keeping his calm under pressure and bowling well..

Looks like NZ have achieved the mental block status in T20s or ODIs akin to what SA have in ODI KO matches.
The aim should be to tie against NZ, get the super over, you are bound to win :)
Happened 3 times in 8 months, too much for NZ to overcome at the moment.

I knew the game was over when it went to a super over.

How pathetic is it that I'm still worried about winning a match from 3 from 3 with wickets in hand.

In fact it was 3 from 4. Perhaps it was inevitable they would lose since they could not even manage 2 from 4 in the last game. Not sure what's going on with NZ at the moment. Also, where on earth is Neesham!

Stop giving excuses . In his first 3 T20s,Pant had a score of 38.Thats why he got more games

Samson is yet to cross 20

Samson was dropped after his first match. Give a reasonable excuse for once lol. Pant averages just 20 after 27 T20's. He is rightly dropped/not picked. :inti

It was a choke in the end. But India showed real mettle reaching 165 after bring 88/6 at one stage. Their bowling was mediocre for most of the while but managed to hold on in the clutch.

That's what makes champion teams.

dude it's no fluke. If you do it twice in a row that shows how clutch india are. Even with a weakened side.

but please get rid of thakur. I don't care if he plays well. he can't play in australia.
no to chahar as well.

please. if u want to win then don't pick these 2 clowns.

Easy win for India. NZ need to make huge changes now. They are missing Boult but this is a very embarrassing performance at home from a team who didn't lost the 2019 World Cup.

New Zealand, seemingly in control of a chase of 166 at one stage, lost their way in the last two overs, allowing India the chance to win a second consecutive Super Over to go 4-0 up in the five-match T20I series.

Fifties from Colin Munro and Tim Seifert had put New Zealand in sight of a much-needed victory on Friday, 31 January, after falling behind in the series. They needed just 11 off the final two overs and had seven wickets in hand. But Navdeep Saini's penultimate over was a brilliant effort, allowing for only four runs.

With seven needed off the final over, bowled by Shardul Thakur, Ross Taylor skied one straight to long-on. Daryl Mitchell pumped the next ball for four, but an attempt to run a hasty bye off the third ball proved costly as the well-set Seifert was run out by wicket-keeper KL Rahul for 57. India remained sharp on the field as Daryl Mitchell was caught off another skyer, and Mitchell Santner was run out going for the second off the final ball, leaving the scores tied.

Seifert and Colin Munro got New Zealand to 13/1 in the Super Over, bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, with the help of two fours, but that was far from enough, even with Rohit Sharma, the Super Over hero from last match, rested. Rahul slammed a six and four off the first two balls, before pulling a Tim Southee short ball to deep mid-wicket, but Virat Kohli finished things off with a boundary, consigning New Zealand to their seventh Super Over defeat in eight attempts across formats.

It had all begun so well for New Zealand, who had restricted India to 165/8. At the heart of the effort was leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, who returned a remarkable 3/26. Only Manish Pandey's brilliant 36-ball 50* prevented a smaller total for India.

Sanju Samson, replacing the rested Rohit at the top, began with a six over long on off Scott Kuggeleijn, but fell for 8 when he tried to play a similar shot two balls later. Kohli fell soon after, when a ball from Hamish Bennett stopped on him to take his leading edge.

Ish Sodhi cashed in on the opening: First, he had Shreyas Iyer caught behind, then dismissed the in-form Rahul with a half-tracker, which the batsman pulled to Santner at deep mid-wicket, and finally had Shivam Dube caught at long-on for 12, reducing India to 84/5.

When Santner, who had taken three important catches already, cleaned up Washington Sundar for nought, India had slipped to 88/6. But Manish Pandey rebuilt superbly, with assistance from Thakur. They added 43 quick runs for the seventh wicket, before Pandey rallied the tail to reach his fifty in the final over.

In reply, India were disciplined until the final over of the Powerplay, when Thakur erred in his areas and Munro heaved him for a six over deep mid-wicket, a four over mid-off and another four to deep mid-wicket. Despite that onslaught, New Zealand only had 39/1 after six overs, but that burst helped the hosts break the shackles.

Munro and Seifert found the boundary at regular intervals, off quicks and spinners alike. Their partnership was worth 74 runs when a moment of brilliance from Kohli brought India back into the contest. Munro was attempting a hasty second run, but Thakur fired a flat throw to Kohli at mid-wicket. The India captain caught the ball, swivelled and fired an accurate throw at the stumps to catch Munro short for a 47-ball 64.

That breakthrough brought another wicket with debutant Tom Bruce, playing as a replacement for the injured Kane Williamson, bowled round his pads by Yuzvendra Chahal for a three-ball duck.

Seifert, though, struck two sixes in three balls to keep the chase on course. He enjoyed a bit of luck in the second of those as Saini was unable to hold on to a potential catch, instead parrying it over with the momentum. Bumrah, too, dropped a tough chance off his reverse sweep at short third man, as the batsman went on to post his second T20I fifty.

They needed just a run a ball in the last three overs, and seemed set for victory when things dramatically fell apart.

New Zealand will aim for a consolation victory in the final T20I in Mount Maunganui on Sunday, 2 February.

Only two teams can bully NZ in NZ. These are Australia and India.

I am not surprised India are dominating there.

I am not sure Bumrah has fully recovered. He is avoiding yorkers for some reason something which made him famous. In death overs, super over. he rarely bowled a yorker. I know it takes a lot out of you. I don't want this guy to get injured again. Rest him.

We have never been able to bully them, they have just lost the plot after their WC final loss.
All of them need a break or motivation of some kind.

Safe to say India has inflicted some real mental blows to the NZ team. Ask any cricket fan of 80 what was the most harrowing loss and they would say Miandad Sixer match. It was a close one but indelible - also kickstarter a decade and half of bullying by Pak of India (except for world cups). It took WC 2003 Sachin innings to reverse it.

I have a bad feeling about these wins lol Do we face NZ in world T20? Hope we don't do the same thing we did in the world cup.

Didn't we beat them last time 4-1 or something? This may not be exactly akin to bullying but a refreshing change from the past where we were competitive away but hardly won matches. One of the reasons I rate this team so highly is because of their consistency and reliability away against top teams. Kohli hasn't won any silverware but he will eventually, too good a team to not to win something big.

You are right my bad on that , slipped my mind, somehow the memories of terrible ODI performance before 2003 Wc are so fresh whereas I forgot something from tour  aging
And that team had Boult as well although we lost the T20 series.

I am sure in 90's we defeated Pakistan many times. In fact we started to change things after 1996 WC. We defeated them in sharjhah cup (1996) and made it to finals with SA. Defeated them 4-1 in 1997 in a series. Defeated them in Bangladesh independence cup then in 99 WC.

Between 89 to 97 was the worst period of selections from BCCI EVER. "ATG" players like salil ankola, raju Kulkarni, dodda Ganesh, kurivilla, "fixer specialists" mongia, prabhakar, Azhar & Sunil Joshi, subroto Banerjee , pravin amre , ajay sharma among others were selected. And most could perform only in India or Vs teams which were weaker against spin like Eng or WI or BD and Pak was way too strong at that time.

Mistake not BD but SL - ran out out of editing

New zeland beating india in the semi final of the WC was a fluke. Not going to happen again. Plus that was a 2 day game not an odi. Should have been a rematch.

india did beat them 4-1 in odi series prior to world cup before as well and that time n.z had a full strength side.

india also missed dhawan in the wc plus number 4 which should have been iyer.

I dont think quality of opposition matters ,india has developed new mental obstacle in KO games, they will literally lose to any side in Icc KO match, you can even back bangla vs india in icc KO these days.
I already predicted that india will lose in semis to any team abd that was sole reason why i didnt want it to be indVpak.

Apart from this we can back india to win almost anyother match anywhere :-)

We can blame selections but talent pool wasn't any good during that period. It took a few generations after 83 world cup to get kids invested in cricket as a career.

maybe but this indian side is too good to not win a icc tournament. Let's hope they win the world test championship, t20 world cup or the world cup atleast.

A team that has Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah and Shami playing should certainly win a WC, no excuses acceptable if these guys don't win a WC or be a pivotal part of that.

India have been fined 40 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand in the fourth Twenty20 International in Wellington.
Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions after Virat Kohli’s side was ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Kohli pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.On-field umpires Chris Brown and Shaun Haig, and third umpire Ashley Mehrotra levelled the charges.

well they have been number 1 in tests for 5 years now. So thay counts for a lot.

I agree a WC win in t20 or the real odi world cup would be a phenomenal coup to reflect India's dominance in odi.

Subroto Banerjee was a very good bowler who was also handy with the bat but lost out in team politics. He took 3 wickets against Aus in a innings on a particular day while others were not able to provide any impact and produced zilch, management got afraid that he may establish himself, so next day Azhar did not give him ball at all.

Pravin Amre was good as well with great technique but more importantly had lot of mental strength. His bad luck that even though he was from Mumbai he did not have the backing since they had to protect Bewda and Manju who were darlings of management for ragging and fingering players coming from other state association. When Donald run through Bewda and Manju in the first India - SA one day, it was Amre and Sachin who played through fire and won the match. Also remember his century in SA. That innings was classic back in wall innings against severe odds.

Joshi was fine as well even though he was mentally fragile. That test match against Pakistan, Joshi did really well in supporting Sachin but the moment he got out, he threw it away. Little bit of composure with Srinath and Kumble and India should have won that match.

Sachin Tendulkar & Opening of Indian economy gave much more boost to cricket than 1983 World Cup. Most players (batsmen) who did debut in & after 2000 had Sachin as idol.

You are right Sachin and LPG was the main reason. However, Sachin himself was inspired by Viv, Gavaskar and Kapils men.
