Scientists in India have hit out at speakers at a major conference for making irrational claims, including that ancient Hindus invented stem cell research.

Some academics at the annual Indian Science Congress dismissed the findings of Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.

Hindu mythology and religion-based theories have increasingly become part of the Indian Science Congress agenda.

But experts said remarks at this year's summit were especially ludicrous.

The 106th Indian Science Congress, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, runs from 3-7 January.

The head of a southern Indian university cited an old Hindu text as proof that stem cell research was discovered in India thousands of years ago.

G Nageshwar Rao, vice chancellor of Andhra University, also said a demon king from the Hindu religious epic, Ramayana, had 24 types of aircraft and a network of landing strips in modern day Sri Lanka.

Another scientist from a university in the southern state of Tamil Nadu told conference attendees that Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein were both wrong and that gravitational waves should be renamed "Narendra Modi Waves".

Dr KJ Krishnan reportedly said Newton failed to "understand gravitational repulsive forces" and Einstein's theories were "misleading".

Critics said that while ancient texts should be read and enjoyed - it was nonsense to suggest they represented science.

The Indian Scientific Congress Association expressed "serious concern" at the remarks.

"We don't subscribe to their views and distance ourselves from their comments. This is unfortunate," Premendu P Mathur, general secretary of Indian Scientific Congress Association, told the AFP news agency.

"There is a serious concern about such kind of utterances by responsible people."

Pseudoscience moves from fringe to the mainstream

India has a mixed relationship with science.

On the one hand, it has a rich tradition of outstanding scientists - the Higgs boson particle, for example, is named partly after an Indian physicist and Einstein's contemporary, Satyendra Nath Bose. Particle physicist Ashoke Sen, meanwhile, is the recipient of Fundamental Physics Prize, the world's most lucrative academic award.

But it also has a long tradition of replacing science with myths, leading to a fringe culture of pseudoscience.

Many believe under Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP party, pseudoscience has moved from the fringe to the mainstream.

Mr Modi himself set the tone in 2014 with his outlandish claim that cosmetic surgery was practised in India thousands of years ago.

Many of his ministers followed suit with similar claims. India's top science summit also started inviting academics with Hindu nationalist leanings who have made equally bizarre claims.

Such claims usually hark back to an imagined glorious Hindu past to bolster religious nationalism. The BJP and its hard line allies have for a long time mixed mythology and religion to bolster political Hinduism and nationalism. Adding science to the mix, say critics, will only help propagate quack science and erode scientific temper.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

Other claims made by Indian politicians and scientists:

  • India's junior education minister Satyapal Singh in 2017 said that airplanes were first mentioned in the ancient Hindu epic, Ramayana. He added that the first working plane was invented by an Indian named Shivakar Babuji Talpade eight years before the Wright brothers
  • Also in 2017, the education minister for the western state of Rajasthan said it was important to "understand the scientific significance" of the cow, claiming it was the only animal in the world to both inhale and exhale oxygen
  • In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told medical staff at a Mumbai hospital that the story of the Hindu god Ganesha - whose elephant head is attached to a human body - showed cosmetic surgery existed in ancient India
  • Geologist Ashu Khosla said that Hindu god Brahma discovered dinosaurs and documented them in ancient Indian scriptures while presenting a research paper at the Indian Science Congress on Sunday
  • Lawmaker Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank prompted outrage in 2014 when he said that "science is a dwarf in front of astrology". He added that astrology was "the biggest science" and that India conducted nuclear tests more than 100,000 years ago

Clowns doing what Clowns do.

Everything is mentioned in religious texts. But they wait for the white man to discover/invent it so that they can copy or buy it.

Indian Science Congress = RSS

this is science, not a cult, that einstein's theories cannot be dismissed. that is a nature of science, that it is always open to scrutiny and can always be challenged. if an ancient dinosaur can be named after balochistan, why cannot something scientific be named after Modi, the first hindu ruler in centuries. no need for the haters to get their frocks in a twist.

Top scientists in India yesterday condemned “irrational” claims made at the 106th annual meeting of the prestigious Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA).

The Breakthrough Science Society (BSS), an NGO that campaigns for scientific literacy, held protest meetings across the country against presentations suggesting that ancient Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata contain detailed knowledge of stem cell research, test tube babies, aircraft and guided missiles.

"People must ask the organisers how they allow this," said Rajani KS of BSS.

Professor Nageswara Rao, vice chancellor of Andhra University, told the ISCA's special Children’s Science Congress that according to the Mahabharata, a single mother gave birth to 100 sons via test tube technology.

“The Mahabharata says 100 eggs were fertilised and put into 100 earthen pots” Prof Rao said.

He put it to an audience of teenagers that these were early test tube babies, claiming this proved stem cell research was prevalent in India thousands of years ago.

Prof Rao also claimed that the Hindu god Ram used guided missiles that would chase targets, strike them and then return.

The demon god Ravana, the professor further stated, operated 24 different types of aircraft from several airports in his kingdom.

Another participant, scientists Kannan Krishnan from Tamil Nadu in southern India, challenged Einstein’s theory of relativity and Isaac Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation on the grounds that neither of the two scientists understood physics.

Mr Krishnan declared that the Theory of Gravitational Waves would soon be re-named “Modi Waves’, after the Indian prime Minister Narendra Modi.

ISCA organisers, however, later distanced themselves from these two speakers and resolved to exercise more caution in inviting participants next year.

“We are shocked at the comments made by the two speakers,” ISCA general secretary P P Mathur said.

This is not the first time absurd claims have been made at ISCA meets, with critics alleging the Modi government has debased the organisation.

In 2015 a paper on Indian aviation technology claimed that the ancient native sage Bhardwaja had detailed blueprints for varied types of aircraft.

The year before prime minister Modi buttressed similar logic when he told an audience of doctors and scientists in Mumbai that plastic surgery and genetic science had flourished in ancient India.

He said that was how the revered Hindu god Ganesha’s elephant head was attached to a human body, and how the warrior god Karna was born outside his mother’s womb.

In a similar vein other members of Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, in a bid to laud India’s achievements, have claimed that motorcars, space vehicles even the Internet existed in ancient times.

Finally these clowns being put in their place.

True. Modiji has reawakened the wounded pride and self esteem of a common Hindu. Thanks to him Hindus around the world are no longer subjected to humiliation and disrespect they were earlier target of. He has singlehandedly managed to instill a feeling of dignity and self worth in the Hindu population on this planet.

I feel so grateful and honored to be born in this generation.

The idiot making the absurd claims is not a scientist , just another Bhakt

Post 2014, the Indian Science Congress has been reduced to a joke where bhakts display their intelligence in public view. But what can they do when supreme leader Modi makes statements about plastic surgery in ancient India based on Lord Ganesh's elephant head? Playing to the gallery is all these morons are doing, probably the one who makes the most stupid comment will get rewarded with a big post. India has never been a bigger laughing stock than it is today, that is yet another feather in the cap for this useless government. Intellectually bankrupt people who allegedly get a degree from Yale after a 6 day study tour, now that one takes the cake !!!

last intellectual in BJP was Shourie & he left them . I had posted on FB that being a rabid idiot is pre-qualification to be a RSS/BJP member & thanks to my post being shared by 60 friends , i got a ban of 3 days !

These clowns are better than the hypocrites who study science and engineering but still believe in miracles.

Interesting point.

Lots of us mock these types of statements yet at the same time will believe in resurrection (Jesus), flying horses (the buraq), angels with wings who helped people in battle (jundullah), giant humans who lived centuries ago (Goliath, kumbhkaran etc), people walking on water (Jesus, vasudev etc), talking snakes (leviathan) and animals (balaams donkey), half human half animal beings (Ganesh), flying carpets (Solomon), headless warriors fighting in battle (guru tegh bahadur, baba deep singh) etc etc. The list is endless.

Why is it okay to believe in one concept which is anti science yet not okay to believe in another?

Ramayan and Mahabharat are mythologies. Part of it might be based on hostorical facts. But quoting them to align with modern science is beyond moronic.

There is no harm in believing in all this fairytale stuff as long as you don't try to propagate it as a next scientific discovery. Science relies on objective evidence for describing a phenomenon.
The things you mentioned fall into the arena of faith. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

They have to dismiss it scientifically not with religion..that is the thing..

Biggest threat to India isn’t an external threat but internal in the form of radicalized extremists nationalists Hindu hijacking Indian politics and society.

These Hindu psycho's want to take credit for every invention even though they are amongst the poorest countries in the world. Einstein like any scientist can be questioned but he is well respected in the world. Most of the world outside India don't even know who these "demon kings" or Hindu figures RSS type believe in are. I always say that Greeks are the ones from whom great knowledge originated from.

Whatever floats their boat man. Who knows? They might be on to something.

biggest threat to india are the munafiq hindus who have no knowledge about their glorious ancient past and join the chorus of ridicule led by their western masters. the hindu mujahids will overcome these traitors one day.

So you are an agnostic/Atheist, I hope you didn't dismiss the views of this minister without making sure you dismissed such religious notions of yourself..

Why is it so difficult for people to believe in supernatural without presenting them as facts?

Neither.

Extreme is an issue not religion.

Religious extremists and science just dont get along, do they?

Religion is an issue obviously, please read the article again see the guy's thought process..

India probably had minimal ignorance regarding science in pre-Modi India but in current Modi’s India it is extreme.

Guess the "scientist" here hasnt ruled out the possibilities but has gone a step further and believes all the religious texts he reads..you are on a slippery slope my friend..

There is huge difference between not ruling out the possibility of something’s existence and claiming that something as a scientific fact.

It does.
Religion does not prevent me or my fellow being from excelling in Science.

it is the capacity of the brain to hold two conflicting views at the same time, nothing to do with religion.

do you believe in science and also in miracles? yes or no.

What else did anyone expect with Modi at helm of India's affairs?

Haven’t ruled out the possibility.

Then unfortunately you are no different.
You just can't pick and choose based on your own beliefs and at the same time freely mock others about their supposed 'primitive' thought process. It doesn't work like that.

I’m not the one presenting my beliefs as facts. In fact I’m open to all possibilities.

And I never put value judgments like ‘primitive’ or ‘outdated’ on someone’s beliefs because I do not believe in religious prejudice against anyone.

India also has the most flat earthists so no surprises here.

Religion will always fall flat on its face when it tries to step into science's realm.

West improved so much because they separated religion from state. We are still justifying religion and age old texts which has as much science as there are veggies in a cheese burger.

Modi and his cronies are making a mockery of themselves everyday. Keep it going. We all need some laughs.

They are passing time and enjoying kings' lives behind all this drama-bazi/nautanki.
Blatant lies to keep their political power. Diverting people's and Indian (joke) media's attention so people may not ask the real questions.

I can so imagine a BJP guy with agenda of stupid/controversial stuff they have to say/do each x days. Same stuff that Trump does but in Indian version.

Yes because it's religious, didn't you notice him quoting Ramayan..

I'm assuming you are Pakistani Muslim..so are you saying you don't believe in your scriptures?Don't you pray?

People practicing religion and then blaming this man should ideally realize blind Faith is causing this, he is quoting something from Ramayan..with absolute belief on Aircrafts that's less with extremism and more with ignorance..no?

I'm assuming you are Pakistani Muslim..so are you saying you don't believe in your scriptures?Don't you pray?

There are lots of Pakistani Muslims who don't believe in scriptures or pray even in Pakistan, never mind England. I am always surprised by people who seem to assume otherwise. Although they won't be representative of the majority, maybe that is what causes confusion.

That's why I said assumption, atheists and agnostic who were former Muslims are very direct about their views (just my.l opinion) and usually have crystal clear views about their belief unlike the other atheists/agnostic.(my respect to them for that as I clearly don't have it in me to go all the way and always keep returning.)

Everything to the poster was a question..

Yes because it's religious, didn't you notice him quoting Ramayan..

It is not religion.

He is an individual who is perverting religion to stay relevant just like many politician do with science.

Interesting. my religion is an advanced science book if one studies it deeply too.

No doubt its being ridiculed then. Consolidating your faith with science is ine thing, but believing it a book of science will get you nothing but taunts!
