What's happening?

Australia A, South Africa A and two Indian teams (India A and B) will compete in a quadrangular series of one-day matches in Vijayawada. Teams play two matches against each opponent before the top two sides meet in a final.

When is it?

The first match is tomorrow, August 17, when Australia A face India A. The final is set for August 29.

Australia A: Travis Head (c), Alex Carey (vc), Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Michael Neser, Joel Paris, Matthew Renshaw, Jhye Richardson, D'Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Mitch Swepson, Chris Tremain, Jack Wildermuth

South Africa A: Temba Bavuma, Farhaan Behardien, Gihahn Cloete, Theunis de Bruyn, Robbie Frylinck, Beuran Hendricks, Sisanda Magala, Pieter Malan, Senuran Muthusamy, Dane Paterson, Dwaine Pretorius, Rudi Second, Tabraiz Shamsi, Malusi Siboto, Khaya Zondo

India A: Shreyas Iyer (c), Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Krishnappa Gowtham, Siddhesh Lad, Mayank Markande, Mohammed Siraj, Krunal Pandya, Nitish Rana, Ravikumar Samarth, Sanju Samson, Prithvi Shaw, Shivam Mavi, Hanuma Vihari, Suryakumar Yadav

India B: Manish Pandey (c), Mayank Agarwal, Ricky Bhui, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shreyas Gopal, Deepak Hooda, Ishan Kishan, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Siddarth Kaul, Kulwant Khejroliya, Pradish Krishna, Navdeep Saini, Shubman Gill, Jayant Yadav, Vijay Shankar

Who should I watch out for?

Towering quick Billy Stanlake has come on in leaps and bounds in the past 12 months after recovering from a toe injury that saw him miss the start of last summer. He's fit again after breaking a finger in the IPL and his pace and height will be a huge asset for the Australians.

Temba Bavuma is now a Test regular for the Proteas and looks to be the lynchpin in the South Africa A middle order. He now was 31 Tests under his belt and is the class batsman in the squad, and the sight of him taking on Stanlake – who stands 42cm taller – will be an interesting one. It'll be cricket's version of David versus Goliath, but heart trumps size any day and Bavuma has plenty of that.

For the hosts, it's hard to look past skippers Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey, two players with international experience and first-class averages above 50. Prithvi Shaw, at just 18, is an exciting talent who has seven centuries in 14 first-class matches.

Best battle expected?

While it's one-day cricket, it will be fascinating to see how Australia A's batsmen play spin bowling. A lot has been made about Australia's susceptibility to quality spin bowling and this series will be another chance for the tourists to prove the doubters wrong. Batsmen Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head and Matthew Renshaw will be pushing their case for a Test selection to the UAE, and good performances here and in the following four-day series will be worth their weight in gold.

Australia A one-day squad: Travis Head (c), Alex Carey (vc), Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Michael Neser, Joel Paris, Matthew Renshaw, Jhye Richardson, D'Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Mitch Swepson, Chris Tremain, Jack Wildermuth

The real reason for India's improving performances, regular A (,B) and U19 tournaments.

Something totally neglected in Pakistan. When was our last A tour anyway?

India's improving performances???

India's improving performances???

India's been on the upward trajectory since 2007, especially in LOIs.

People (almost all "experts") credit this rise to IPL. These A tours, etc, have more of a role

I think there should be more A tours all round.

I guess they are a money loss but they are so valuable to player development. Ireland & Afghanistan should be trying to get in on these too.

Good form here for Oz will see a player picked vs Pakistan in the UAE I am sure.

What is the point in having these A tours when the team management is hell bent on not giving opportunities to younger batsmen and prefers the TTFs of yore. Someone like Mohammad Siraj has been in sizzling form for A team, but has not played a single match for the national side. He will get selected only after all the TTFs have regressed further or broken down. Likewise with Pant or Shaw or earlier with Iyer. No opportunities when in form, get called out of the blue for a match or two, they fail and get sidelined while the TTFs keep getting picked.

Only good things is those picked for the A squads will enter the domestic season well and match ready.

What dream world are you living in? Their selectors keep on selecting TTFs in their squad. The only ranking where they are ranked number 1 is test which is based on victories in Asia. Their selectors prefer consistent selection of failures over talented players like Gill. What is the use of these A tours when you dont even play those players?

A good initiative this one. Looking forward to see khaleel Ahmed. Have high hopes from him.Hopefully he performs well in the tournament.

Saday laiq bhi kuch gunjaish nikal detay tou munasib hota bhai :yk

Too much Urdu. Did not understand :(

That was Urdu and Punjabi mix :yk2

It would have been alright if some space had been made for us as well (but it loses its comic feel in English and seems like a serious request)

These A tours are not helping. None of these teams go on to beat the national team away from home (barring South Africa to a certain extent)

May aswel added an India C team too in order to increase Indias chances to win the tournament.

None of these matter until, players on these teams get a chance in the national team. I am sure the selectors are pondering over bringing back Rohit Sharma for the final two Tests. None of the young players will be selected.

India is a regular top 3 team in all formats also the only one. Yes home tests have helped these rankings but every team has home and away cycle. India has been consistently good over the last 15 years. Yes they still have issues like winning away but everyteam has and India is possibly in the best position to overcome these issues with time.
