India have announced the squads for the all-format tour of South Africa, starting 10 December.

KL Rahul will lead the ODI squad against the Proteas in the absence of several regulars, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya among others.

In the longer format, India will be back to full strength, bolstered by the returns of Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah after their long absence from Test cricket. Rohit Sharma will be back to lead the side for the Test along with Virat Kohli, with both players requesting a break from the white-ball leg of the tour.

India’s squad for 3 T20Is: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Ravindra Jadeja (VC), Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Deepak Chahar.

India’s squad for 3 ODIs: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma, Rajat Patidar, Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (C)(wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar.

India’s squad for Tests: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (wk), KL Rahul (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Mohd. Shami (subject to fitness), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Prasidh Krishna.

The return of Rahul and Iyer means there’s no place in the squad for red-ball veterans Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, both of whom featured in India’s XI for the World Test Championship Final against Australia in June.

Mohammed Shami also returns to the Test side but his inclusion is subject to fitness as he is currently undergoing medical treatment.

While Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mukesh Kumar, who made their Test debut during the West Indies tour, hold onto their place.

Here are some of the importatnt dates to keep in mind:

1st T20I - December 10, 2023
2nd T20I - December 12, 2023
3rd T20I - December 14, 2023

1st ODI - December 17, 2023
2nd ODI - December 19, 2023
3rd ODI - December 21, 2023

1st Test - December 26-30, 2023
2nd Test - January 3-7, 2024

How will India perform in this tour of South Africa?

I think, Only Virat Kohli requested for the rest. Rohit Sharma is fearing to play in South Africa.

Someone help me with the logic at work re Jaiswal's omission from the ODI squad.

He's good enough for T20s - plays at a high SR. He's also good at tests with his solid technique.

But not good enough for ODIs? How does that work?

Also, ruturaj has no business being in the test squad.

Jaiswal is yet to make his debut in ODIs, he has a good average of 53.96 in List-A.

Senseless selection.

Why no Kishan in ODIs?

What has Mukesh Kumar done to be selected for 3 formats?

Arshdeep Singh or Avesh Khan have been very poor still get selected.

Deepak chahar is a joke selection.

Only consolation is no Rahane or Pujara in tests.Means Shubman will play at 3.

Overall a very poor selection.

India's performance at the 2024 T20 WC will be laughable.

Odis are not a priority right now unlike t20s due to the t20 wc. And in tests - they will play the best bowlers bumrah shami siraj.. these guys should be in the t20wc and so should be back for the t20 wc..

But can't believe they reward tuk tuk mental midget klrahul with odi captaincy. That's a disgrace. He cost ind the wc final with his slowness. Also jadeja should be dispensed off - can't believe he's in the t20 squad -- same old all rounder useless quota. He should be kicked out from tests also - he's just a darker in tests.

In t20's we are fine with young side and they will learn to deal on tough pitches now.Atleast they are talented and don't have dead woods like kl, chahal,Rohit etc.In odi am surprised at the inclusion of chahal,Samson and kl as captain. Sai In odi has got the good deal with out any other opener for all the matches to prove his worth. In tests, selectors should be looking Gaikwad at 5 otherwise no need of him .

Looking forward to the Test series. If we don't win it this time, I don't know when we will win one in South Africa. Will also watch the ODI series. The T20 series can go to hell.

Think this series will be a draw. 1 - 1 My prediction or 2 0 SA if not 1-1.

India don't have proper batsmen to play swing in SA.

Jaiswal is an incredible talent but they need sundar rinku etc all to be ready too. Pant injury is massive blow.

This mental midget rahul is our odi captain we screwed last time we played odi in South Africa Rahul was our captain South Africa destroyed India in that series Shreyas Iyer should be odi captain

Indian cricket Darkest days are coming

ajit agarkar worse selector than former selector
One good thing is almost our new gen is in the fray.I will there are abnormal selections such as kl being the captainafter he made mess in the finals(Mukesh across formats, iyer in t20 etc), but lot better and sensible than Chetan sharma's bizarre selections .Pant will take care of kl in 6 months for sure in all formats. I don't like iyer in test matches that's a disaster.

I think South Africa are much stronger now than before. Their Test bowling attack is one of the best in the world currently.

So, I expect a tougher time for India.

Indian batsmen like the old kohli and co will struggle badly. Without pant they don't look as good

As for bowling. Will be funny to watch midget kumar bowl his pies. Depends on selections but in these conditions SA batsmen are better against bounce and seam so I think 1-1 is the best india could HOPE FOR.

guys like Mukesh shouldn't be making district cricket leagues with that pace and skill

I think Kishan is wicket keeper in Tests so he might be playing a warm up game which means he will be unavailable for ODI series, same as Gill and Jaiswal.

Rest I agree are laughable selections.

T20 squad
------------
Decent squad. Do not like Iyer who cannot play short ball and Mukesh Kumar who is a trundler. Though his lenghts are good, he is no better than Mohit Sharma who was a similar bowler. India promoting trundlers is nothing new and they seem to like it.
Gaikwad is not a modern T20 player. He has good technique. But too slow most of the times before he hits his stride. Even worse than Rohit.
Inclusion of Jaddu shows that he will be part of the T20 WC squad. Perhaps his last WC.

ODI Squad
------------
Not sure why India is even playing ODI's. They are pointless until next WC. Just a filler to earn more money for BCCI. It is so useless that selectors threw a bone at Sanju Samson who finds a spot there. Probably to keep his die hard fans quiet.
Even Avesh Khan finds a spot in the ODI Squad. BCCI does not care about ODI's.

Tests
-----
Iyer is a joke selection. He will last one over against Rabada in Tests. He will be peppered with short balls and then one yorker length and Iyer will breakdance his way back to the dug out.
Gaikwad finally finds a spot in the format he can fit perfectly. He could be the new age Rahane. Very similar styles.
Mukesh and Prasidh are again joke selections. SA will be praying that Shami is not fit so that Prasidh can get a game and they can feast on the hot Mysore Bondas he serves every over.

One glaring part missing in all 3 formats is the lack of a proper all rounder. While Sundar can be an all rounder, he has not proven it yet as he does not get many opportunities too even when he is fit. That leaves India again with Jaddu. Axar is still unreliable. He is also past 30 and time is running out for him.

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has today named the Proteas squads for the all-format inbound tour against India from 10 December – 07 January.

The tour, also known as the Freedom Series, comprises of three KFC T20 Internationals (T20Is), three Betway One-Internationals (ODIs) and two Betway Test matches.

Western Province trio Mihlali Mpongwana, David Bedingham and Nandre Burger have earned their maiden call-ups to the national set-up.

Fast bowler Burger is rewarded for his outstanding all-round form this season by being named in all three squads, while batter Bedingham is picked in the Test squad. All-rounder Mpongwana, meanwhile, has been named in the ODI squad following a successful CSA Division 1 One-Day Cup campaign where he recorded his maiden List A ton and took 3/32 in the final against North West Dragons in October.

Dafabet Warriors batter Tristan Stubbs has been included in the Test squad for the first time. The 23-year-old, who is already capped in both white-ball formats, impressed with his 117 for South Africa A against Sri Lanka earlier this year and most recently struck 130 against DP World Lions in the last round of CSA 4-Day Domestic Series matches.

Province wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne has been recalled to the ODI and Test squads. The 26-year-old last featured for the Proteas in the Test series against Australia in January and has since led Province to the One-Day Cup title and enjoyed success in this season’s four-day competition with 275 runs in three matches at an average of 68.75 and a top score of 150.

Other notable selections include Hollywoodbets Dolphins seam bowler Ottniel Baartman in the white-ball squads and DP World Lions all-rounder Wiaan Mulder in the ODI and Test squads.

ODI captain Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada are amongst a group of players that have been omitted for the white-ball leg of the tour in order to play red-ball cricket as emphasis is placed on the Test series for which both will return.

Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi will miss the 3rd T20I and ODI series and will instead, together with Bavuma and Rabada, play in the round of first-class matches for their respective domestic teams from 14 - 17 December in preparation for the Test series.

T20I captain Aiden Markram will captain the ODI side in Bavuma’s absence.

Momentum Multiply Titans fast bowler Lizaad Williams suffered a groin strain during this past weekend’s four-day match against Province. He will undergo further medical assessments this week to determine the extent of the injury.

Meanwhile, Anrich Nortje (lower back stress fracture) and Wayne Parnell (left shoulder) were not considered for selection as they are still undergoing rehabilitation for their respective injuries.

The T20I squad will get together in Durban on Thursday, 07 December.

Proteas ODI squad against India

Aiden Markram (captain, Momentum Multiply Titans), Ottniel Baartman (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Nandre Burger (Western Province), Tony de Zorzi (Western Province), Reeza Hendricks (DP World Lions), Heinrich Klaasen (Momentum Multiply Titans), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Mihlali Mpongwana (Western Province), David Miller (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Wiaan Mulder (DP World Lions), Andile Phehlukwayo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Tabraiz Shamsi (Momentum Multiply Titans), Rassie van der Dussen (DP World Lions), Kyle Verreynne (Western Province) and Lizaad Williams (Momentum Multiply Titans).

Proteas Test squad against India

Temba Bavuma (captain, DP World Lions), David Bedingham (Western Province), Nandre Burger (Western Province), Gerald Coetzee (Momentum Multiply Titans), Tony de Zorzi (Western Province), Dean Elgar (Momentum Multiply Titans), Marco Jansen (Dafabet Warriors), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Aiden Markram (Momentum Multiply Titans), Wiaan Mulder (DP World Lions), Lungi Ngidi (Momentum Multiply Titans), Keegan Petersen (Gbets Rocks), Kagiso Rabada (DP World Lions), Tristan Stubbs (Dafabet Warriors) and Kyle Verreynne (Western Province).

“We are excited to announce the latest squad of players who will represent the Proteas in white-ball cricket against India in the coming weeks,” limited-overs head coach, Rob Walter, said. “After an excellent overall showing at the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, we want to capitalise on that momentum and continue building on our core group during this Freedom Series.

“We have a busy summer ahead starting with the T20Is and then ODIs against India and we have therefore taken the decision to omit several of our senior players. This decision was taken together with coach Shukri as we place emphasis on the red-ball leg of the tour meaning they will instead be preparing for the Test series by playing domestic cricket. In saying that, the move has presented opportunities for others that have been performing well on domestic level to be drafted in.

“We are looking forward to seeing what they can do, the likes of Nandre Burger, the leading wicket-taker in the One-Day Cup as well as Donovan Ferreira and Mihlali Mpongwana. We also have others back in the national fold such as Wiaan Mulder and Ottniel Baartman, so it is exciting to see how they will get on.

“We are anticipating a very good series against a strong India team and cannot wait to get started in Durban on Sunday.”

Test head coach Shukri Conrad added: “It is the start of a new ICC World Test Championship cycle and that itself is a huge incentive for everyone. The playing field is level and we want to try and ensure we make a strong start to this sequence here at home against one of the best teams in the world.

“We have a near full-strength squad to pick from and that in itself is a real boost for us. We have also added some new and exciting faces such as David Bedingham, Nandre Burger and Tristan Stubbs, who make the Test squad for the first time. There are others that are also back in the fold after going back to their unions and returning with impressive performances.

“Overall we believe this group has all the attributes to deliver on our objective, which is to maintain our proud record against India in South Africa.”

Finally David Bedingham gets a callup. He's been piling on the runs in County Cricket for years.

Former South Africa cricket team skipper
Faf du Plessis believes that the Indian cricketers are still 'heartbroken' following their loss in the Cricket World Cup 2023 final and said that it is somewhat like 'breaking up with a girlfriend'. India won ten matches on the trot in the competition before losing to Australia in the summit clash. Most of the players were rested for the T20I series against Australia but they will be back in action during the upcoming tour of South Africa. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Du Plessis opened up about the challenges that the players may face in the upcoming T20I series.

"That is a big challenge. I remember going through a similar experience as a cricketer when we went through the highs and lows of the 2015 World Cup. The heartache that you have to deal with takes a bit of time and it is a bit like breaking up with a girlfriend. You cannot just get over it straight away. India were so amazing in the way they played in this World Cup. They were unbelievable the way they went about their business. They will be feeling in a similar way and they will be heartbroken. That was their World Cup to win. That will take a bit of time and time heals everything," Du Plessis said.

"Your first series back feels like you are in the middle of nowhere. Obviously there are so quality players there and some experience players who I am sure will help manage the young guys well," he added.

Earlier. Du Plessis had hinted at a possible return to international cricket at the T20 World Cup 2024.

Du Plessis last played for the national side back in December 2020 and since then, he has been playing T20I cricket for various franchises all around the world. Du Plessis was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Auction and he has been exceptionally successfully for the team.

At the sidelines of Abu Dhabi T10 League, the veteran star revealed his possible plans for the upcoming competition with the South Africa cricket team.

"I believe that I can return to international cricket as well. We have been speaking about this for the last couple of years. It's just figuring out the balance of the T20 World Cup next year. It's certainly something we have spoken about with the new coach. Watch this space," Du Plessis said.

He should play during a competitive India tour to gain rhythm for the ICC T20I World Cup 2024.

Cricket South Africa regrets to announce that it is unable to strike a deal with the SABC to broadcast the 2023/24 India Tour to South Africa on free-to-air television.

For the past few months CSA and the SABC have been involved in protracted negotiations on the free-to-air broadcast rights of the India tour, which are exclusively owned by CSA for the purpose of ensuring that cricket is accessible to the larger South African population.

On 29 November, CSA finally received an offer from the SABC for the broadcast rights at a massively discounted rate.

In view of the significant audience the SABC enjoys, which meets CSA’s aim of growing cricket across all sectors of South African society, CSA was eager to ensure that the India tour was available on free-to-air TV.

CSA responded to the SABC six working days later on 7 December, accepting their offer in totality.

Regrettably, hours after CSA’s full acceptance of their offer, the SABC informed CSA that they are unable to broadcast the India tour due to a withdrawal of potential sponsors.

The free-to-air rights remain available and should the SABC be able to attract sponsorship, CSA is willing to conclude an agreement which will ensure the India tour is enjoyed by millions of South Africans.

As per reports, Lungi Ngidi will miss the T20I series against India due to a left lateral ankle sprain, leading to his exclusion from the playing squad.

Proteas fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the three-match KFC T20I series against India due to a left lateral ankle sprain.

The 27-year-old has been released from the squad and will return to his provincial team where he will undergo his rehabilitation with the Momentum Multiply Titans under the supervision of the Proteas medical team.

Initially he was expected to play in the round of four-day matches from 14 - 17 December in preparation for the two-match Betway Test series but will instead be further assessed by the medical team on his progress.

Western Province fast bowler Beuran Hendricks has been named as his replacement.

South Africa will be without one of their premier seamers as they take on India in a three-match T20I series beginning Sunday.

South Africa take on India in a three-match T20I series with the first game in Durban on Sunday. But the home team has been dealt with a major blow with one of their strike bowlers, Lungi Ngidi, ruled out of the series.

The 27-year-old fast bowler, who last played in the league stage of the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, sustained a left lateral ankle sprain.

He has been released from the T20I squad and will undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the South African medical team.

Ngidi has been replaced by Beuran Hendricks in the T20I team. The left-arm seamer will be playing his first international game in two years if he makes it to the playing XI.

South Africa T20I squad: Aiden Markram (c), Ottniel Baartman, Matthew Breetzke, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee (1st and 2ndT20Is), Donovan Ferreira, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen (1st and 2nd T20Is), Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Beuran Hendricks, Andile Phehlukwayo, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, and Lizaad Williams.

Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20I skipper for the South Africa series, is bullish about his team's chances in the upcoming three-match series against the Proteas starting on Sunday.

Suryakumar Yadav is certain that India's young team would adapt seamlessly to the hard and bouncy wickets in South Africa and praised the team's effort to win the T20I series against Australia before heading to the Rainbow Nation.

"I think the key to success on such wickets will be to be yourself,” Suryakumar said in the pre-series press conference.

"The boys have prepared well. We are coming from a good T20I series win and have played on all fast tracks and all batters have played on such wickets. They will enjoy playing here in South Africa."

Carrying on from what he said during the Australia series, Suryakumar expressed that he wanted the team to maintain the "fearless" approach that brought them success in the home series.

“The players put their hands up against Australia and came up with fearless cricket, and we need to play the same against South Africa," he said.

"I just told them to do exactly what they do in franchise cricket."

Stressing that he has enjoyed captaincy so far, Suryakumar underlined that it was an important series for India given that they only played six more T20Is before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup next year. But the skipper also brushed aside concerns that the lack of matches would affect India's preparations for the global event.

"I feel there are limited T20s going forward, before the T20 World Cup, but then we play 14 league games in the IPL as well," Suryakumar said.

"And players who have been playing in these T20 internationals... they've played a lot of games, and they have a lot of experience under their belt. So, we don't think there will be an issue or any problem in selecting the squad because everyone knows their roles really well and responsibilities really well."

The skipper didn't divulge details about India's possible combination for the series opener on Sunday, but stated that the team knew who would be opening the innings tomorrow in Durban.

"We have the combination in mind. We know who are going to open tomorrow, and perhaps, will take a final call after the practice session today."

Most probably, SKY will lead India in the ICC T20I World Cup 2024.

That's the only way ind has a chance at the 24 t20 WC. If the "seniors " rohit kohli klrahul jadeja are back for their " experience " then ind can kiss their chances of winning it goodbye.. And this happens only in the SC - ind and pak especially- why should everyone " wait" for the seniors to " retire" ?? Nobody should be forced to retire.. the selectors should show some guts and simply drop them. Your country gives you the privilege to play for the nation and not the other way round.

Coming to this T20 series in SA - should be a good contest.. two teams that are good in bilaterals squaring up lol ! But with youngsters in ind team - they should not have any past baggages.. the bowling though can be hammered by sa batsmen ..

We should deploy both kuldeep and Bishnoi instead of a 3rd fast bowler who is never good .Sa will have issues with both of them and Bishnoi can develop himself at 8.

It would be interesting to see whether sky continues his good run here in south africa or he would just crumble under pressure. Many questions will get answered for indians in this tour

Yeah bishnoi is quite underrated. He bowls the tough overs in the t20 power play unlike sir jadeja who bowls after power play. And bishnoi also bowls overs 16-20 often. Plus he's a decent bat. He's got that aggressive attitude and intent like Zampa. Cant believe they picked jadeja - he's way past his best.. thought his white ball career was done after the odi wc..he's like a cancer who needs to be excised asap..

If Pandya is playing, he should be partnering Bumrah as the 2nd pacer. In T20's, Shami and Siraj are not that great. Both Siraj and Shami are quality Test bowlers.
I do agree that India has to play 2 full time spinners in Kuldeep and Bishnoi and the 3rd spin bowling all rounder should be Washington.

As per reports, Jay shah have not given any assurance for Rohit in t20 wc .So effectively Eohit, Kohli and Kl are done and dusted.Atleast a good step in right direction. They should consider Sky for t20 captaincy instead of waste like pandya

Never underestimate the " experience " quota. A decent ipl for these seniors and next thing they are in the team. Also not sure how jadeja keeps getting selected in t20s - he's such a pathetic t20 player. And sky long term captain as sir pandya is so fragile like glass..

It seems mgmt wants jadeja batting for assurance and they don't trust washi (fitness)and axar (batting).Dravid says they need lower order batting but happy to play Chahal against windies instead of Bishnoi at 8.Mgmt gives mixed signals to pick their own team all the time.

The Indian team has beaten Australia just a few days ago and the momentum is with them atm. South Africa will be dishearted at the loss in the semi-final.

Rubbing it in bro lol ! 😂.. Bilateral series world beaters headed by ind and followed by sa. Clash of the titans! They will have good practice before the t20wc to decide who will face aus and eng in the final and then lose and be disheartened again!

Jadeja has been a horrible batsman for a long l ok long time now. SR way less than 80.. his batting in the odi WC final was so cowardly tuk tuk - should have been the end of his career. He has been.poor for a long time now. He is still living off that 2019 odi WC sf knock. He is predominantly just an average bowler now.. he should be dropped for good..

Dravid as coach is not helping us at all in cutting the dead wood and trusting the juniors. Reg new talent Everything is pecking order for him and experience is everything .one hell of an old coach for modern times

Ind needs a coach like Mccullum- the bazball approach..just be aggressive and go for it. To heck with personal stats - only team wins and trophies should matter. But knowing ind that will never happen.. and yeah Dravid is a regimented defensive coach. Eoin Morgan is another good option- you lose you lose that's fine but atleast dont lose being tuk tuk defensive. No shame if the other team plays better.

Kallis makes big prediction ahead of India's Test series in South Africa

South Africa great Jacques Kallis believes superstar batter Virat Kohli will need to be at his brilliant best if India are to defeat his former side in their upcoming two-match Test series.

India will re-commence their ICC World Test Championship campaign with two Tests against a powerful South Africa line-up away from home over the Christmas and New Year period and Kohli's form with the bat is likely to be pivotal to their fortunes.

"I am sure he will want to have a big series here in South Africa. He has been in good form. I think he will play a major role in helping India. If they are to win here, he will have to have a good series," Kallis told Star Sports.

Kohli has an excellent record against the red-ball in South Africa, with the 35-year-old having scored two of his 29 Test centuries against the Proteas away from home.

Kohli was India's leading run scorer during the last World Test Championship cycle with 932 runs from 30 innings and has already netted a century and a fifty from his side's two completed Tests against the West Indies to begin the 2023-2025 cycle.

The champion right-hander is also coming off a prosperous ICC Men's Cricket World Cup on home soil as he scored a whopping 765 runs and claimed the Player of the Tournament award, and former adversary Kallis thinks he will be the key to India's success in South Africa.

"He's a massive player, no matter where it is. Having played here quite a bit and had a fair amount of success," Kallis noted.

"He'll be able to pass that knowledge on to the other guys, especially the younger guys and give them ideas on how to manage these conditions and then what to expect."

As per reports, Shami had developed an ankle condition, but it remains unclear regarding the details of the injury or how it had developed.

The senior pacer was suffering from ankle pain which he played through in the 2023 ODI World Cup as well. The source of discomfort was when he landed on his right foot at the delivery point as well.

The availability of the pacer is a serious doubt for the Boxing Day Test match against South Africa.

There was a big injury scare for Suryakumar Yadav. In the third over of South African series, the Indian cricket team captain hurt his ankle while running back to field a ball. He rolled over the ankles. He was immediately taken off the field and did not field for the rest of the innings. Later, he hobbled his way up to the post-match presentation ceremony and said the injury was not looking serious.

"I am good. I am able to walk so it is not looking that serious. It was wonderful scoring a hundred, and especially when it comes in a winning cause. One box we wanted to tick was play fearless brand of cricket. Really happy the boys showed a lot of character. Kuldeep is never happy with a three-for or a four-for. A perfect self birthday present," Suryakumar Yadav said after the match.

No Outsiders Allowed In India's Warm-up Game Before South Africa Test Series. Reason Is...

Shubman gill was at his silken best during Indian team's intra-squad training game at the Tuks Oval on Thursday even though there wasn't an opportunity to get a glimpse of that enchanting sight. Coming in at No. 3, Gill helped himself to a hundred on the second day of the three-day match, playing all the bowlers with consummate ease, adding a dash of confidence in him ahead of the two-match Test series against South Africa beginning on December 26.

The Tuks Oval in Pretoria has been kept out of bounds for media even as the Indian team went ahead with their match simulation ahead of the Boxing Day Test. The venue is around 45-minute drive from the Supersport Park in Centurion where the first Test will be held.

Trying to keep their cards close to the chest, head coach Rahul Dravid and team management didn't want the match to be watched by outsiders as it can give a clearer idea about their strategy to be deployed against the Proteas.

Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad's finger injury could possibly warrant a few more days of rest and the Maharashtra right-hander might not be in contention to be selected for the first Test.

Gaikwad had hurt his ring finger during second ODI and wasn't selected for the third match against SA on Thursday.

However, Gaikwad not being considered for selection will not be a big deal as far as Test matches are concerned since all slots in batting order are filled as of now.

Indian cricket team superstar Virat Kohli has reportedly returned home due to a family emergency, just days before the start of the first Test against South Africa. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sources, however, have confirmed that the iconic batter will be back in time for the first Test, which begins on December 26, against the Proteas in Centurion. Earlier, the BCCI had released wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan from the squad for the Test series over a personal matter. KS Bharat was named as his replacement for the 2-match series.

It has also been learned that India's opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the two-Test series because of a fracture in his finger. "Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the two-Test series with ring finger fracture," a source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Gaikwad had sustained the injury on his finger while trying to take a catch during the second ODI against South Africa earlier this week. The BCCI hasn't yet named a replacement for the young batter.

The Test series is set to mark the return of Kohli, along with skipper Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrah and a few other members of India's ODI World Cup squad. Since India's heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the World Cup final, Kohli, Rohit and some other senior members of the Indian team have been away from cricket.

Virat had missed India's T20I series against South Africa as well as the white-ball assignments against South Africa. However, he made himself available for the Test series from the start.

It isn't yet known what the 'family emergency' is that prompted Virat to return home just 4 days before the start of the Test series. But, the emergency doesn't seem to be a complicated one as Kohli has assured the BCCI of his return to the team before the Test series begins.

The batters could be in for some challenging times with the Supersport Park track expected to aid the fast bowlers as rain threat looms large over the opening Test between India and South Africa, curator Bryan Bloy said on Saturday.

The Centurion curator said that there is little possibility of play on opening day and better part of second day and due to heavy rain, there will be drop in temperature and spinners are unlikely to get much help.

"Temperature will be super low, like 20 degrees. The temperature is now 34 and it will drop to 20. I don’t know what conditions will be like, whether we will get play on Day 1," Bloy told PTI after his regular inspection of work.

"Hopefully we will get some play and it will be cool on Day 3 and I don't know how much turn will be available."

The opening Test begins on December 26.

Bloy said that if track remains under cover, batting first will be a tough ask.

"I can’t guarantee the forecast but if it remains under cover for the better part of the two days then that might be tricky to bat first, because its been covered for so long and hasn’t been rolled for so long, we don’t know how long we will have to get the field ready for play in current situation. So if it’s a Day-3, 10 am start, it doesn’t give us much time, because it’s in the morning and you start playing at 10 and really three hours of cool weather and early morning will be tricky. If its covered for two days, I would presume bowlers would benefit from it."

For Bloy, the idea is to prepare a typical Centurion wicket.

"Our goal is to stick to the characteristics, not do anything different or out of the ordinary. I want it to be typical hard wicket as per Centurion’s conditions. The wicket is quite green and we have got two more days and its hot, with a bit more rolling, it would lose a bit more colour, but I am happy that there is a thin even coverage of grass. Looks good."

However, there could be some bad news for Ravichandran Ashwin as Bloy isn't sure how much purchase spinners would get in case of rain.

"That will be tricky, because you are seeing a forecast on Day 1 and Day 2. It looks awful. The sun is out for four days and so there will be some purchase for spinners, offer turn and bounce, with weather forecast, I don’t know how accurate it will be as there will be lot of rain."

So what's a typical Centurion track?

A typical Supersport Park wicket is slower on Day 1, little bit softer and as time goes by it gets a bit quicker and it gets variable.

"For me, fourth day afternoon finish would always be fantastic but that’s out of my control. We prepare the stage and players will have to come out and put the show,” Bloy replied.

In the past, there have been reports of Indian team management's interference in curator's work but Bloy, who was actually a golf course curator, having studied turf management, never faced such issues.

"There is very little communication with the Proteas. You prepare as per characteristics of Supersport wicket and we know what to expect. I don’t get a lot of interference there and I think they just leave us to prepare good wicket,” he said.

In Highveld region (Centurion belongs to Gauteng province), there is more clay content (red soil) unlike other parts of South Africa where black soil is used for pitches.

"In our part of the world, its mostly black soil but in Highveld region the clay content is higher than coastal region and though its different from Wanderers, these 2 are higher clay content, which ensures more bounce for sure but it also produces more cracks."

Can't agree more. Such a dead weight this guy is. Don't know when will get rid of him. He is stuck around our necks like an albatross.

lol Bharat comes back after getting dumped.

If Kishan wasn't available why didn't they opt for someone else especially when Bharat was dumped already. Haven't they seen how timid cricketer Bharat is!

Good riddance. He is a nothing batsman. Adds nothing to any of our squads.

Saffers are there for the taking. Their batting lineup is average to weak and bowling lacks a strike bowler. Rabada is a shadow of the bowler he was and has become too reliant on the conditions lacking innocuous on flat tracks against good players . He pace is down by an average of 3mph from the earlier peaks and the agression has gone. Jansen is solid but Coetzee will be the one to watch because he has real fire in his belly.
