India's four-day practice match against county side Essex was reduced to three days amid high drama over the condition of the pitch and the outfield, both of which apparently left the visitors unhappy and threw their preparations for the Test series against England haywire. The Indian team management took this decision during this afternoon's net practice after having a look at the pitch. Although there was no official word on why the match was shortened, Indian coach Ravi Shastri was seen having an animated discussion with the local officials after getting a glimpse of the grassy pitch and a barren outfield that can cause injury while fielding.

The rest of the Indian support staff, including assistant coach Sanjay Bangar and bowling coach Bharat Arun also took stock of the conditions and were seen having discussions with the ground staff.

Given that the game is not a classified first-class match, it is confirmed that the Indian team will be using all 18 members of their Test squad.

A senior member of the ground staff spoke with PTI at the end of it all on condition of anonymity and said that "all requests of the Indian team management have been accepted".

When pressed if that included "shaving off the grass", he simply said, "We have bent over backwards to accommodate the Indian team management's demands. It is disappointing though because we had sold a lot of tickets for the fourth day (Saturday)."

Another reason for Indian team management's displeasure was that the two nets' pitches were completely bald in comparison to the match wicket, which had a healthy green top. After speaking with the visiting coaches, the ground support staff shaved off the heavy grass layering from one of the adjacent wickets to make it resemble the match-wicket with an equal amount of surface grass. This allowed the Indian batsmen to get a feel for match day conditions, and all prominent batsmen took throwdowns at this wicket.

Even the troika of spinners bowled on this green-wicket, in case one of the Test wickets is an exact replica of the same. The oval county ground has nearly 25 pitches comprising its central square, and all of them had lush green grass covering. It was a strange sight given the heat wave in nearly all of United Kingdom at the moment, with temperatures in Chelmsford soaring to 27 degrees today.

The appearance of the ground was made stranger by the fact that the outfield looked rugged and devoid of any grass, with only patches of green to be seen. It reflected the truer affect of unforgiving sunshine but at the same time, was cause for concern for the Indian team who wouldn't want any players injured during this game.

India's practice session lasted nearly four hours, with players arriving here in two batches. Nearly all batsmen and bowlers had rigorous workouts, with Cheteshwar Pujara, Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli also concentrating on slip fielding. Even so, the sheen was taken off this practice session as the decision to shorten the game came two hours later.

As per statement from Indian team management, the squad will travel to Birmingham on Saturday and start its preparations for the first Test (from August 1) a day early.

When contacted, a representative from Essex County Club said that a statement might be coming forth later in the day.

A green-top wicket, along with a rugged outfield, in a non-first-class game against Essex wherein Alastair Cook is missing, is hardly the best preparation ahead of the first Test.

In turn, this poses a question mark over the world number one side's preparations for the upcoming five-Test series.

With the wicket and ground conditions turning out to be completely different from what is expected to be on offer during the Tests, it remains to be seen how the Indian team management goes about doing things over the next three days.

This includes Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled in tandem with Ishant Sharma, albeit with a heavily taped-up left thumb. Mohammed Shami also bowled a long spell in the nets.

Shikhar Dhawan worked on facing the short ball and took tips from Shastri, while skipper Virat Kohli took throwdowns.

KL Rahul followed openers in the nets, as Pujara batted later in the session.

The remaining batsmen took their turns as part of the second batch.

In fact, Pujara along with Ishant, Shami, Bumrah, Karun Nair, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were all part of the second batch as part of the Test squad, and they were all given a warm welcome by the support staff and other members of the squad.

Shameful stuff from team management. Ravi Shastri is the worst thing that happened to Indian cricket. He cancelled the warm up before SA series and now reduced a day's game here. But the irony is that no one in BCCI has guts to remove him bcoz he has Kohli's backing.

Dravid and zak were appointed for tough overseas tours but Shastri rejected them too. We (Indian fans) have to suffer this till 2019 WC unfortunately.

It's the right decision. India is already suffering from injured players, don't want anymore injury.

On the contrary, those who are here who haven't played the ODI series need match practice. Bizarre decision.

that's why he was upset with groundstaff. He can't just force them to play in these conditions.

Btw, I know Indians will scream easy conditions or something, but the reason we won the first test was because we were better prepared than England. This time, England will be better prepared than India. India might still win, but it's still a weird decision

Most Indians I know off are not happy with this decision. Its not happened 1st time...we even cancelled the warm up game in SA. I think BCCI realized the situation that many playera taking liberty in foreign tour and hence cancelled WAGs travelling with players.

Whatever happened not entirely groundstaff's fault. due to extreme heat wave, outfield has become dry.

Bunch of whingeing ̶P̶o̶m̶s̶ Indians are going to get smashed in this test series.

Just wait and watch.

No team gets perfect conditions.

honestly. what journalists write and what actually the team plan is, are two different thing. there must a strong reason to miss a day. India get extra day to practice at Edgbaston. We haven't seen what's the conditions are there. So unfair to make judgments. I just wouldn't let anyone get injured, that's all I care.

Essex team looking decent. Looking forward to dan Lawrence's performance in this match.

What makes you think that Shastri will leave after 2019 Wc? I think he will leech onto the team till at least 2023 WC.

Time and again, we simply refuse to learn. We should have had a 3 day practice match from 19-21 July and another 3 day match from 24-26 July. But no, right from Dhoni era, we care two hoots abiyt these practice matches. Optional net practice is the in thing. And the whole squad has been roaming in London.

Well this philosophy did not give us good results earlier, results will not be much different this time either.

Yep shastri is going nowhere and so won't virat go as captain till 2023 atleast.

Just look at the pics of those outfield on twitter. It's so horrendous that I couldn't believe that a county for which a player like Alistair Cook plays for is in such pathetic condition. Even my local housing colony ground looks better than that outfield.

Absolute nonsense. Please point me to one series now has more than 1 or at max 2 practice games? We are not in the 90's now to be touring a country for 3 months playing countless practice games. As far as Dhoni is concerned, India did play 2 games at lease in every tour he captained. Kohli was the first Indian captain to refuse a practice game during South Africa series. South Africa just played one practice game ahead of their Test series against SL.

Pakistan landed a week or 10 days before the NZ ODI series and played just one game prior to the ODI series. Teams just don't have the time to have elaborate tours like in the past now. One practice game is all they get and they need to make the most of it. India are playing 5 tests in just over a month which is gruelling as it is. Pujara already had enough practice in County cricket. Ishant Sharma bowled in county as well. Rahul, Dhawan, Pant, Thakur, Kuldeep, Umesh, Kohli, Pandya et all have been in England playing some form or cricket. Karun Nair as well has been part of the India's A tour. So it is just Murali Vijay, Ajinkya Rahane, Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin who haven't played much in England recently.

Vijay and Rahane played in India A game against the Lions. Ashwin played county cricket last year and will most probably play the game against Essex. This is the most any team have had practice for an overseas tour in years and we are still complaining?

It does not matter if this is a 3 day or a 4 day game. Even if this was a 7 day game, It is not going to make a significant difference in the outcome of the series. India will have the same chance of winning the series with or without the Essex game. BCCI/India have done enough to prepare the team for this series and we have no excuses. No point in blaming anything this time. People have played long enough in England and have had good practice ahead of this series.

Pak played 4 pactice games before Eng tour and also played Ireland Test match and 2 practice games had FC status

Why is it that whenever we play a series against England everything starts to fall off for Team India? Injured players, team selection, lack of match practice, excuses, etc? We are going to lose this series because we don't understand the concept and importance of practice matches before the test series. We are taking this very lightly.

What a pathetic display from England cricket board. Can't even provide proper practicing facility to the touring team teams.

Is this how they wanna win the series? By making lives difficult for the touring players?

Get over it, you expect England to bend over for India, of course they will make it difficult. Sri Lanka did something similar against SA. training pitches were batting paradises but the actual reality was rank turners. play to your strengths

Dhawan scored a century before lunch in previous test. Why would he be dropped?

So in that way he will never get dropped cause after every big series we play with srilanka, bangladesh or west indies to give dhawan kind of batsman few runs under their belt.

I don't think one less day is going to make any huge difference.

Are we playing less practice games? Sure. I'd rather India had done like Pakistan and played a test with Ireland than meaningless 2 T20Is.

Anyhow, conditions are pretty dry in England. Also we'd have been there for a month or so when the first test begins, so I am positive about our preparation.

Has to be dropped now. KLR scored good runs today to warrant no.3 slot

Hottest summer in forty years. Hyde Park looks brown and dead too.

India do it all the time. I remember in 2012 home series against England, they didn't name any spinner in the practice match except Mishra, even he was told not to bowl more than 10 overs in the match and he only bowled 5 or 6.

Rahul and Karthik have sealed their spots.

Pujara will miss out for sure.

Not sold on Dhawan as opener. But if it is a flat pitch, he will murder England bowlers. I am inclined to play even 3 spinners if it is a dry and flat pitch. Shami and Pandya will take the new ball. No point of playing Ishant on a flat surface.

I will go with the below mentioned XI for India:-

Vijay
Rahul
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Karthik(wkt)
Pandya
Ashwin
Kuldeep
Shami
Ishant

Kohli shouldn't go over-enthusiastic with the team selection if India have to win here. I think he has a record of never fielding the same XI in the very next test match, which isn't a great thing to have.

For England, I would like to see Bairstow open with Cook and Buttler taking gloves down at 7. Root can come at 4 as well if Bairstow opens.

India are going to get the best possible playing conditions for a subcontinent team.

England at the moment is going through an almost unprecedented heatwave, certainly the driest since 1976.

The wickets especially in the south are going to crumble and aid spin big time especially on days 4 and 5. And it’s not going to seam much either.

So their spinners will come into play. It will be all down to their batting but the conditions barring possibly day 1 will be close to subcontinent conditions and England have no spinner to trouble them.

It's rare and not a norm in cricket these days. Even India has been in UK for a while now. Normally a team gets to play 1 or 2 practice matches at max during a tour. Teams just don't have the time and logistics to play multiple games like they used to do in 90's or before. Teams used to go to Australia in November and stay there till February playing multiple side games, Test series and Tri-series etc. That is never going to happen now. People just don't have the time. Cricket has become more professional and players have to adapt as well. You need to understand that you are not going to get months to acclimatise to overseas conditions. One or two exceptions will not change that.

Ravi Shastri clarifies why India shortened their warm-up tie against Essex

India coach Ravi Shastri has said that India shortened their only warm-up match ahead of the Test series against England from four days to three so as to have an extra day of practice at Edgbaston, the venue of the first Test.

Originally planned from 25 to 28 July, the match against Essex in Chelmsford is now being played over three days, as Shastri believes familiarising themselves with the conditions at the venue of the first Test is "more important".

"[We are getting to] the Test match venue, because it wouldn't have served the purpose here [in Chelmsford]," Shastri said. "Instead of an extra day here, I think an extra day [of training] there would be more valuable ... more familiarity with the venue and the conditions where you are playing the first Test."

As a result, India are likely to reach Edgbaston a day in advance, on Sunday, 29 July, and will have three days of practice before the Test commences on 1 August.

The Indian coach remained upbeat about India's preparations in terms of acclimatising to the English conditions and disregarded claims that India were dissatisfied with the pitch and the outfield at Chelmsford, which was stated as one of the reasons why India had shortened the match.

"Nothing wrong [with the practice pitches]. There was no complaint from the Indian management about anything," Shastri said.

"On this entire trip, you will never see an Indian team giving excuses as regards to conditions or the pitch. Our challenge is to beat them. We take pride in performing wherever we go. We want to be the best travelling side in the word. So the last person who will make a complaint will be this Indian team."

India vindicated Shastri's claims to some extent by finishing 322/6 on the first day of the warm-up game with captain Virat Kohli, Murali Vijay, KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik scoring half-centuries.

The first Test in Edgbaston will be followed by the remaining four at Lord’s (August 9-13), Trent Bridge (August 18-22), Ageas Bowl (August 30-September 3) and The Oval (September 7-11).

This should be the thinking. No complaints win or lose.

Decent comments by Shatri here. Extra day of "practise" means showing the WAGs aroung Birmingham right. I get the feeling India is gonna get caned here :mv

I agree with this. I think England will have to rely on luck - be bowling during intermittent bouts of humidity.

There's no winning with you guys. If India wins, they had batting and spinner friendly conditions. If India loses, they couldn't even win in friendly conditions. Damned if you win, Damned if you lose. :uak

WAGs have been banished from team environment by Shastri and BCCI for first 3 tests. Boys will have to do sightseeing on their own

It's funny that players who takes dozens of wickets and score ton after ton in subcontinent aren't even allowed a game overseas. Dhawan, Pujara, Jadeja, Ashwin to name a few

Sightseeing in Birmingham? Maybe they will visit their distant relatives house there or go to some "team dinner" in a desi restaurant. Chicken tikka anyone. Im sure Rohit will put on an extra tire after this trip :))

Shami bowled poorly yesterday but today was bowling really well sadly got dropped twice in two balls by Dinesh Karthik and other slip fielder.
