Australia legspinner Adam Zampa counts Virat Kohli among the toughest batsmen he has ever bowled to even as he revealed how the five-time ODI World champions have figured out the Indian captain’s weakness.

In the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series in Mumbai, Kohli fell to Zampa, the sixth time in international cricket that the Australian has done so – four times in ODIs and twice in T20Is.

“He (Kohli) is a very hard guy to bowl to,” Zampa said on Thursday. “He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever had to bowl to. After game one (first ODI), he will be even more switched on. It will be a big challenge.”

Zampa claimed that Kohli, who has 11625 runs in 243 ODIs, finds a bit difficult to face legspinners early in his innings. “We basically just found that Virat finds leg-spinners hard to line up early in his innings. He’s such a great starter, even the other day he was 16 off 14. How much energy he brought to the crease, his running between the wickets, some of the cover drives he played off the quicks,” he said on the eve of the second ODI.

“I think it’s important to try and have a game plan against him. So we figured out before the last game that it would be good to start with leg-spin to him. I’ve got him out four times in the last year or so it’s nice to have that confidence to bowl to him at the start of his innings,” said Zampa, who is on his third tour of India.

The 27-year-old Zampa however doesn’t read too much into his apparent hold over Kohli saying he still manages to score better than run-a-ball. “You probably know you’re going to get hit for boundaries but it can really get worse if you make that affect you. I have got him (Kohli) a few times now but I don’t think there is anything in it. He still scores at over 100 (strike rate) against me.”

Explaining how he plans to counter Kohli, who averages nearly 60 in ODIs, Zampa said, “It’s going to be an attacking approach. I think if you’re on the back-foot and have a defensive mindset then that’s when he (Kohli) can get on top of you. The most important thing playing in places like India against these guys is to have a little bit of character.”

Recently Kohli had praised Zampa saying on their last tour of India, he looked the most confident of Aussie bowlers.

“It’s a big compliment from Virat. I’m not the most skillful leg-spinner in the world. Guys like Kuldeep Yadav and Rashid Khan are guys that are really hard to pick. But one thing I have always tried to do is have a strong character,” Zampa said.

He also dismissed the notion that Kohli takes him lightly, something with batting legend Steve Waugh pointed out after the first ODI. “I don’t think he (Kohli) doesn’t respect me. I don’t think that’s correct (Waugh’s statement).”

Fast bowlers were bowling wide to him so there was a plan

The strength of kohli isn't that he is invincible. His strength lies in working hard to remedy his weakness. He may not become as great in those areas as the natural talent borns are, but it will be enough to be consistent again.

Well Zampa better watch out now - these things have a habit of biting you back in the future.

with kohli you have to keep praising him. Then he will underperforms and get out.

If you talk smack about him, he will smash you into oblivion. He wants you to denigrate him because that motivates him.

It's a mental.thing. Some players are wired that way.

N.z were smart to keep praising him before the 2019 semi final.

anyway zampa dint say anything wrong here.

So virat was'nt motivated for a WC semi final brcause the kiwis were praising him. Got to love your theories. First the toss nonsense then this. You clearly are extremely biased towards India. It was quite clear when you said that toss matters in Australia but no in India
Kohli can enjoy his bilateral stat padding until WC2023 knockouts. But I am sure he wont perform in next 2 ODIs either as Australia's full strength bowling is playing

toss isn't ********. toss matters alot. A lot. Especially in australia and SENA in general. in India it would matter only for odi.

ofcourse toss matters. You bat first and make a big total. that's the key. team batting second in the semis or finals often always loses.

India-Australia Test at MCG on Boxing Day won’t look great without crowds, says Mark Taylor

Victoria’s COVID-19 numbers have increased in the past few days, as the situation threatens to send parts of Melbourne into lockdown.
An “iconic” match like the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia must be played before capacity crowd and authorities should not hesitate in moving out the contest from the MCG in the wake of rising coronavirus cases of in Victoria, says Mark Taylor.

The former Australia skipper also said venues like the Optus stadium in Perth and Adelaide Oval, where the situation is under control, will be vying to get the hosting rights of the prestigious Test match.

Victoria’s COVID-19 numbers have increased in the past few days, as the situation threatens to send parts of Melbourne into lockdown.

“Could it move? Obviously, because if you look at what is happening across Australia by Christmas time the MCG may only be able to host 10,000 or 20,000 people which will not look great for an iconic test like Australia and India,” Taylor told ‘Channel 9’

“You move that to Optus stadium in Perth or even Adelaide Oval you will get full venues. Adelaide in particular loves seeing the Indians play. The India-Pakistan game in the World Cup sold out in 52 mins or something,” he added.

Last month, Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) chief Christina Matthews had lashed out at Cricket Australia for choosing Brisbane over Perth as one of the venues for the high-profile Test series against India, later this year.

Taylor believes WACA will look to seize the opportunity to host Virat-Kohli and his men.

“Those venues specially Perth will be trying hard to get that game as it would look better with full crowds.”

The Optus stadium can sit 60,000 supporters and is regarded as the best venue in Australia outside the MCG.

Earlier this week red-ball skipper Tim Paine had a also expressed fears that the Boxing Day Test could indeed be shifted from Melbourne.

combative batting superstar but Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa says the India captain came across as a "chilled out guy" during their interactions in the recent IPL.

The duo played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore team and Zampa, who is in Australia's limited-over squad for the upcoming ODI and T20 series against India starting on Friday, said he forged a bond with Kohli over meat-free eating, coffee and cricket.

Revealing Kohli's caring attitude towards team-mates, Zampa said on his first day in this year's IPL, a WhatsApp message popped up on his phone from a number he did not recognise. It later turned out to be Kohli.

"It was the first day I arrived (and) he WhatsApped me 'Zamps, here's the USD 15 off voucher at a vegan restaurant from Deliveroo. It's a really good restaurant'. I didn't have his number. He made it as if we've known each other forever," Zampa told the 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

Like Kohli, the 28-year-old Australian is also a vegan. He said Kohli also agreed to be the first guest on a podcast he is launching.

"He's absolutely not what you see on the cricket field. He always brings his intensity to training and game; he loves competition, he hates losing as much as anyone. He probably shows it more than anyone," Zampa said.

"Once he's off the park, he's the most chilled guy. He's watching YouTube clips on the bus, he'll laugh out loud."

Zampa said Kohli also talked about coffee, travelling, food, and once asked the Australian "do you want a Beyond Meat burger?".

"He's a really cultured guy. He's good to talk to, good fun. The one thing you take away from spending time with those guys is they're as much of a human being as you are.

"One night he took me aside and talked to me about his travels through Nepal. He's always talking to me about his new coffee machine. He's a pretty normal bloke."

The leg-spinner has claimed Kohli's wicket seven times in international cricket.

"I've got him out seven times, but they're at a good click; the economy is well and truly over six runs per over as well. It'll be interesting now we're closer," he said of the feat.

"I love the challenge of bowling to Virat. He's probably the best player of all time. You see he has 43 hundreds or whatever it is and you go, 'Wow, he's a big wicket, he's superhuman', but at the end of the day you're spending so much time around these guys," Zampa said.

"They go through their own emotions. They're living the bubble life away from home, they're all as human as you are and make as many mistakes as I do or anyone else."

Not this time.
Kohli practiced against him in nets, that's why they picked him for RCB.
