Indian Farmers Protests

All of them and yeah whataboutism is how we should respond to every atrocity.

And FYI ,Jats are a tribe not a caste, we were considered too lowly to even be a part of the caste system.

Er no the whataboutism was w.r.t will not forget. I’ve no issues with protesting, everyone can go to grounds and protest, but your support to close down Delhi well , hope your support similar protests in Aus.

He will in Lok Sabha till Congress chooses Rahul, state elections though Modi (BJP) won’t as much as before.

Thank god his party didn't win in Delhi. I hope people in Delhi use their mind next time also and throw these corrupt politicians out of MCD elections too. :inti

New Delhi: Twenty farmers have died since the protest started outside Delhi and the government, which is responsible for this, will have to pay, farmer leaders declared today from the Singhu border. December 20 has been declared as a day of mourning and "homage will be paid to the martyrs in every village," a farmer leader said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, spoke up again in support of the farm laws, which are at the heart of the months-long agitation and accused the opposition of "instigating" and "misleading" the farmers. The farmers hardened stance, saying they will "make" the government repeal the laws.

You'd have noticed how all sanghi ministers are calling these brave farmers part of tukde tukde gang and terrorists. They are only following script as shared by their master to discredit farmers as is the godi media.

This is going to be a long haul against a brutal dictator who is even more tyrannical than Fuhrer himself.

India's definition of terrrorist is straightforward- anyone against Modi and Sangh is a terrorist.

20 farmers have died - it kills to see our old and vulnerable buzurg out in the open in these cold days and nights. The farmers are fighting against the govt, the corporates behind the government and the sold out media.

Modi will not give in - this is a man who is rewarded by the electorate for his crimes and stupidities so he has no incentive to do so and he is a small petty man who believes in his own hype.

So why is the government blocking the farmers from going to Delhi and why are so many Indians comfortable with the idea of blocking peaceful protests.

Please don't compare Australia with India - Au with all it's faults is a much better country than India with it's stone age laws where adult women are made to abort babies to punish them for marrying according to their will.

Talking PM Modi and crimes, big Words from a supposed Sikh, where Punjab is ruled by the Congress party who were responsible for the greatest Sikh Genocide of all time in the past.. Ohh the Irony here.

Farmers have always wanted to take the middle men out, so they get more financial benefit directly, now that is done, the farmers are crying foul. Looks like Ammayi Sonya's Congress party has done a decent job tricking the Punjabi farmers lol...

P.S. I am not saying Modi Govt's new farm laws are the greatest thing since slice bread for Punjabi farmers, however its good to point out some of the reality. Also yes you are correct, he wont give in, I feel he will eventually get his way and the farmers after the ammayi sonya effect will realize things weren't as bad as she and her Congress Party tried to make it out to be.

The funny thing about all this is, PM Modi will mostly likely win with a bigger margin next election and Congress will get a bigger demolition, ammayi sonya's use of the Punjabi farmers will most likely be a waste of time for her, oh well she has to try something otherwise her diaper pooping Raul Puppu will be sent to an orphanage after she passes away... :))

A democratically elected govt which has mandate to make laws, protecting democracy from fascists, who don't want a choice given to farmers, and want to dictate terms to keep the stone age laws.

This is akin to 1992 reforms, when PVN Rao liberated the industries. ND Modi has liberated agriculture. Jahil indians have opposed every reform, from being against computers, to nuclear deal, to reservations for backwards.

I don't think Modi will win next elections. :inti

You think BJP will allow it to remain like it is today? They know the hindtuva mindset (majority of the voting population today) and how to woo them. Modi will wage a war with Pakistan if he has to in order to stay in power.

No, he doesn't have guts to that. Especially since China has all but invaded India :yk and the whole Abhinandhan PTSD.

Modi has experience in starting communal violence. Expect him and his goons to start something inside India. It will get them their blood stained votes.

Unfortunately for Indian Muslims, this is what it is.

Yes. I was just saying the lengths that he can go to in order to stay in power. He doesnt give two hoots about the common people of India. I just read a report where it was said that crony capitalists like Ambani and Adani have increased their wealth by 250-270% in 6 years under modi. Thats insane!! The common people on the other hand are suffering and unemployed.

And by the way India does have the backing of US to disrupt OBOR in CPEC. But you're right that it'll most probably be a communal riot kind of a thing.

This is superficial understanding. Ambanis were thriving under congress rule too. And one ambani went bankrupt during modi's tenure. but to assign causation, need to first find if it was some policy which favoured one company against other.

India is a country of jahils where they crib about lack of jobs but also hate the corporates who drive employment, and instead want things to be nationalised and more sarkari jobs.

India farmers' interests 'my top-most priority', PM Modi insists

Launching a scathing attack on the opposition parties for misleading farmers over the three new agricultural laws, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reiterated his government's commitment towards the farmers and said that protecting their interests was its topmost priority.

The PM spoke at a host of virtual ceremonies of projects in the Kutch region from Dhordo city in Gujarat.

Modi said: "The present agricultural laws had been the demand of farmers for a long time. Even those who are in the opposition today were supporting these bills earlier when they were in power, but could never make a decision on them and pacified the farmers with false assurances.

"I once again repeatedly convey to my farmer brothers that for each and every one of the farmers' doubts, my government will stand with you. The interests of farmers have been the top-most priority of my government right from day one."

"It is my government's intent and honest effort to bring down the farmers' agricultural production costs, provide better alternatives to them, increase their income, and reduce their difficulties. I firmly believe that the thousands of farmers who have blessed the government all across the country, will reject all the misguidance provided to them," the Prime Minister added.

Modi said it was his government's intention to give freedom to the farmers, the freedom experienced by the dairy sector which is associated with agriculture.

"Dairy and fisheries are two sectors growing rapidly in the country, which very few people know. The government's interference in these sectors is minimal. The Anjar Dairy is the best example of it. When we started it in Kutch, there was very little hope expressed by everyone but I was firm to try it. Now, look at how the dairy sector has grown. Earlier, for processing milk it was sent to Gandhinagar, but now the milk is processed here and now the dairy capacity will be increased by two lakh liters. Through this new plant, value addition will also be possible for milk products," the PM added.

Modi added: "25 percent of the agricultural income came from the dairy industry and those who were benefiting the maximum out of the dairy sector were the small farmers. The private and the co-operative players in the dairy sector play a maximum role in the trade with minimal interference from the government. The same applies to the horticultural sector."

"The overall milk production value in the country is more than that of food grains and pulses combined. The dairy sector is free from government hassles, so why should not this freedom be given to the farmers growing food grains and pulses? And it is this freedom that our government is making efforts for," Modi explained.

Modi was in his home state Gujarat on Tuesday to inaugurate the world's largest renewable solar and wind energy park.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, Minister of State for Energy Saurabh Patel, and Home Minister Pradeepsinh Jadeja were also present in Tent City.

Modi arrived at the Tent City of Dhordo directly from Bhuj airport.

Before addressing a limited gathering of people and stakeholders of various projects, the PM inaugurated the world's largest renewable energy park comprising solar and wind energy with a capacity of 30,000 MW in Khavda, a border region of Kutch touching Pakistan.

Modi also performed the ground-breaking ceremony of four desalination plants at Gundiyali in Kutch and at Dwarka, Ghogha, Bhavnagar, and Sutrapada Somnath, all in Saurashtra. He also presided over the ground-breaking ceremony of a 2 lakh liter milk chilling plant at Bhachau-Anjar in Kutch virtually from Dhordo.

After his address, Modi interacted with some farmers in Kutch and the border area of Kutch which also included farmers from Punjab. He also met the artisans making Kutch handicrafts.

As an expert on economics, please tell me if 275% growth is normal in such a short amount of time?

I never said I am an expert, but you made the statement. I merely asked you to explain it. Let us assume that this growth was not all above board, but then you need to show how any policy of the govt helped the growth. How did the policies of the govt help one ambani become richer and another ambani go bankrupt?

I never said govt supports every rich guy out there. Its entirely possible that one ambani was favoured and the other was not. I am no expert on economics either but this article might help you a bit.

This article doesn't explain either, merely insinuates that because they flourished under this govt, there must have been some unethical dealing going on. These no name indian journalists are those who didnt get enough marks to join good colleges, didnt clear any entrance exam, didnt qualify for any sarkari job from peon to upsc. The left overs of indian education, and they become journalists and write articles explaining everything to equally gullible readers.

Forbes had predicted in 2010 that ambani will be richest man in the world in 2014. He had been consistently the richest man in india. You need to show hard evidence that there was some scam or unethical dealing which made him rich/richer.

Btw no one becomes rich without bending some rules. This is universal for super rich people.

Indian farmers widows join protests against agriculture reforms

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Hundreds of Indian women, including many widows of farmers who were believed to have killed themselves over debt, joined a protest on Wednesday against government reforms that farmers say threaten their livelihoods.

Farmers have been protesting for nearly a month over the reforms, enacted in September, to deregulate the agriculture sector, allowing farmers to sell to buyers beyond government-regulated wholesale markets.

Small farmers fear the changes will mean the end of guaranteed minimum prices for their crops and leave them at the mercy of big retailers.

“If these black laws come, more farmers will go deeper into debt,” said 40-year-old Harshdeep Kaur, a widow from Punjab state, at one protest site on the outskirts of the capital, New Delhi.

“More mothers and sisters will become widows like me.”

Suicide by struggling farmers has been a problem in India for years.

Nearly 10,350 farmers and agricultural labourers committed suicide in 2018 - making up almost 8% of all suicides in India, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

Kaur said her husband committed suicide three years ago after running up debts of 500,000 rupees (nearly $7,000). As she spoke, she held a passport sized photo of him.

The reforms, contained in three laws, loosen rules around the sale, pricing and storage of farm produce.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tried to assure farmers the changes will bring them new opportunities but few have been convinced. Several rounds of talks between farm union leaders and the government have failed.

“We’ll keep protesting,” said Gurbax Singh, a farmer union leader at a north Delhi protest site.

The farmers have gathered at various sites around the capital since late last month, blocking traffic and clashing with police, at least in the early days of their action.

Singh said dozens of buses, tractors and cars were being arranged to bring more women from Punjab – the epicentre of the agitation.

The protesters occupied several kilometres of a busy main road in western Delhi with their tractors on Wednesday.

At a nearby protest site, old farmers lounged in ramshackle shelters beside medical stalls and makeshift kitchens.

Kaur said she and other women were prepared to protest until the laws were repealed.

“More women will come,” she said.

I think the article suggested the following reasons:

"In his Vijay Dashami speech, Bhagwat praised disinvestment of public sector units, justified foreign direct investment and talked down the “useless discussion” on economic slowdown. Remember: the Modi government had recently given corporate houses a big gift by slashing corporate tax rates from 30% to 25%, a move that would cost the government over Rs.1.45 lakh crore. Small wonder then that corporates are a happy lot – and the rich list is growing by leaps and bounds."

This applies to all corporates. So it can be "accused" of being a corporate friendly govt at best. But where is the evidence that Ambanis made their filthy lucre through this govt.

Govnt shouldn’t back down from this law, do one thing BJP.

In an ideal world, Congress under Dr MMS would have passed these bills, and things would have been better. Their support ecosystem of intellectuals is far superior even now.

India’s Supreme Court has offered to set up a mediation panel to end a three-week protest by tens of thousands of farmers demanding the repeal of new agricultural laws that they say will drive down crop prices and devastate their earnings.

The court on Wednesday sent notices to the government and the farmers’ representatives across the country seeking their views on the proposal and set Thursday for a possible decision.

The farmers have been blocking half a dozen major highways on the outskirts of New Delhi for three weeks and say they won’t leave until the government quashes what they call the “black laws” passed by the parliament in September.

Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian made the offer to set up the panel after five rounds of talks between the government and farmers failed to end the impasse.

“Your negotiations with protesting farmers have not worked apparently until now,” the Press Trust of India news agency cited the judges as telling government lawyer, Tushar Mehta.

Apart from blocking the movement of people, the large-scale protests have dealt a blow to manufacturing and business in northern India.

The farmers say the laws will lead to the cartelisation and commercialisation of agriculture and make farmers vulnerable to corporate greed.

They fear the government will stop buying grain at minimum guaranteed prices and corporations will then push prices down.

The government says it is willing to pledge that guaranteed prices will continue. The protest leaders have rejected the government’s offer to amend some contentious provisions of the laws.

Nearly 60 percent of the Indian population depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government insists the new laws will benefit farmers. It says they will allow farmers to market their produce and boost production through private investment.

On Friday, a farmers’ group filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking the repeal of the three laws.

The Bharatiya Kisan Union, or Indian Farmers’ Union, argued that the laws were arbitrary because they were enacted without proper consultations with the stakeholders.

Doesn't matter. Foreign citizens have zero say in what happens in India. Use some common sense.

They have a right to protest in the UK in front of Indian officals who are here. There is nothing you and Modi can do about it, thats common sense.

First they came for Muslims/Christians, now Sikhs , next it will be moderate Hindus.....if they are any left in India. So called democracy but its government supporters want to shut down any voices which dont fall in line with their absurd and extremist policies.

I dont hold out much for Indian Muslims, they seem scared but Sikhs are a different breed, they care no hoots about RSS. This is the beginnning of Hindu - Sikh conflict in India.

It does but i am sure you understand that which corporates will be in the position to benefit from it the most. And whether the common man is actually benefiting from any of it.

Is the common man in India benefiting from these honchos getting exponentially richer?

There are a handful of top companies and any govt contract, which has a tender, will go to these few, because they are the ones who can afford to complete works of large scales and have expertise. If US govt has a big project, will you prefer they awarded it to a startup or microsoft?

Would the common man benefit if reliance was closed down? Dont understand this line of thinking that industrialists should not grow rich. This is medieval thinking, that rich = evil. Jesus said that a a camel can go through a needle, but a rich man cannot enter the gates of heaven. Sorry, this thought is outdated.

Opposition's Ram Temple Anger Behind Farmers' Protest: Yogi Adityanath

Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today hit out at the opposition parties for fuelling unrest in the country using farmers, and handed out a somewhat curious logic as to why they were doing this: unhappiness over the Ram temple's construction in Ayodhya.
"This is the envy of those people who do not like that Bharat is becoming Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. I saw that a dharna is on. First, they said there should be an MSP (minimum support price) guarantee," the Chief Minister said, speaking at a farmer outreach programme in western UP's Bareilly district.

"The government said there is no question of taking back MSP. Then why are people misleading (farmers)? They are angry. Those who cannot tolerate that a grand Ram temple is being built in Ayodhya...are angry because Prime Minister Narendra Modi has even kickstarted the construction of a grand Ram temple," Mr Adityanath said.

So this communal bigot is giving this protest communal color. Being a communal bigot is in all sanghis' DNA so how could this Bisht be any different.

How could anyone link this protest with construction of Shri Ram temple is beyond me! But then sanghis are not known to have grey matter.

He is talking about the opposition, not the farmers. And he is right. The opposition is jealous of the achievements of this govt.

Modi offers talks to end India protests against farm reforms

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday defended India’s biggest farm reforms in decades but offered to “very humbly” hold further talks with farmers protesting against the laws they fear would erode their incomes.

Tens of thousands of farmers have blocked roads leading into New Delhi for the past three weeks demanding a repeal of laws that give them the option to sell directly to private companies.

The government says the change is necessary to boost farm returns and improve storage and other infrastructure.

But the farmers, mainly from the northern agrarian states of Punjab and Haryana, fear private companies would eventually dictate terms and the government would stop buying grains like wheat and rice from them at a minimum guaranteed price.

In online remarks to farmers of the country’s biggest wheat-producing state, Madhya Pradesh, Modi said there should be no cause for concern and repeated the government’s position that farmers would be assured of a price like earlier.

“The modern facilities available to the farmers of major nations should also be available for those from India, it cannot be delayed any longer,” he said.

“Still, if anyone has any apprehension, and in the interest of the farmers of the country and to address their concerns, we are very humbly ready to talk on every issue.”

His comments came as farmers, many in their sixties or above, brave north India’s harsh winter to camp out in the open on Delhi’s borders with their tractors and trailers parked bumper to bumper.

After a series of previous meetings with Modi’s ministers, the protesters have said that nothing short of an official annulment of the three laws will be enough to change their position.

Rakesh Tikait, a farmers’ leader, said after Modi’s speech that the premier was trying to privatise agriculture to benefit companies and not them.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made an unscheduled visit to a Sikh temple in New Delhi, kneeling in respect and taking pictures with visitors at a time when the community is leading massive protests against his farm reforms.

At least 25 people have died during the protests against the three laws – approved by Parliament in September – so far, police said; several deaths were due to the biting cold weather.

Modi, whose security detail often keeps him far from the general public, prayed at the Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib on Sunday, interacted with Sikh religious leaders there and obliged visitors seeking to take pictures with him.

The temple, near Parliament House, was where Sikh saint Guru Teg Bahadur was cremated.

“I felt extremely blessed,” Modi said on Twitter.

But while some social media users and his party colleagues welcomed Modi’s visit to the shrine like a “common man, without any restrictions”, others urged him to try and end the protests.

“A request to Narendramodi please visit #FarmersProtests site as well where #Farmers are peacefully protesting,” a Twitter user posted.

Thousands of protesting farmers, mainly from Sikh-dominated Punjab and neighbouring Haryana, have been blocking highways into New Delhi for the past three weeks demanding a repeal of the new fam laws, which the government says will expand the agriculture market and are crucial to boosting storage and other infrastructure.

Many farmers in their sixties or older are sleeping in the open, braving the harsh winter weather camped in their tractors and trailers parked bumper to bumper along the highways.

Indian farmers vow to carry on protests despite cold, deaths

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Indian farmers, protesting over agricultural laws that they say threaten their livelihoods, have vowed to carry on their around-the-clock sit-ins despite cold weather that has already led to some deaths among them.

Farmers from the northern states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and the desert state of Rajasthan have camped on key national highways for weeks demanding a repeal of the laws, withstanding temperatures dropping to 2-3 degree Celsius (35.6-37.4 Fahrenheit).

The farmers, including a large number of older people, said they would endure the bitter winter sweeping northern India, including the capital New Delhi, to force Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration to rescind the laws introduced in September.

“It’s very difficult to camp out in this weather, but we aren’t scared,” said Balbir Singh, an octogenarian from the Patiala district of Punjab. “We won’t go back until our demands are met. Even if we have to die here, we will.”

Since late November, when thousands of farmers arrived in trucks and tractors to camp out on the borders of New Delhi, nearly 30 people have died, several of them as a result of freezing weather, farmers said.

About ten people have been killed in road accidents near the protest sites, they said.

“We don’t want more people to die in this protest, and I hope Modi and his government take back the laws soon,” Paagh Singh, 76, said, wrapped in a blue blanket. “It’s a democracy, and he (Modi) has to listen to us.”

As temperatures dropped, one of the main protest sites turned into a sea of small tents and tarpaulin-covered tractor trolleys. But some demonstrators have to spend the night sleeping in the open air.

“I don’t care how cold it gets,” said farmer Surminder Singh. “I’m neither scared of the cold nor of Modi. Our struggle will continue until the laws are withdrawn.”

Indian farmers start hunger strike to pressure Modi on reforms

(Reuters) - Farmers’ leaders sought to step up pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal three agricultural reform laws on Monday by starting a 24-hour relay hunger strike.

Modi’s government is urging the farmers to engage in further talks to end a deadlock which has led to thousands camping on the outskirts of New Delhi for more than three weeks.

The protests have blocked roads connecting the national capital with neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, hitting public transport and the supply of fruit and vegetables.

“We are going on a 24-hour relay hunger strike, skipping meals, to press our demands of repealing three agricultural laws,” Yogendra Yadav, a prominent protest leader, said.

Leaders called on their supporters to skip one meal on Dec. 23, in solidarity with the protests against new laws, approved by parliament in September without much debate, which farmers fear could pave the way for ending state procurement of crops, while helping big retail buyers.

Modi has defended the laws saying these would help increase farmers income as it would encourage more private investments in cold-stores, procurement and distribution.

More than 30 protesters have died in recent weeks, mainly due to the cold as they were sleeping in the open with temperatures falling to 4 degree Celsius, farmer leaders said.

Farmers leaders also called upon their supporters to boycott Modi’s monthly radio address.

“People should bang their utensils at home on Sunday when Modi speaks up on radio,” Jagjit Singh Dallewal, president of the Bharti Kisan Union, said.

The Indian government has reached out again to the tens of thousands of protesting farmers who have been parked at the borders of capital New Delhi for almost a month, braving a chilly winter to demand the repeal of three controversial farm laws.

In a letter to the farmers’ unions spearheading the protest, the agriculture ministry’s top official on Thursday said the government was committed to reaching a “logical solution” to the issues they have raised and invited them for further discussions “at a date and time of your choosing”, according to Indian media reports.

“I would once again like to stress that the government has spoken to you with open mind on the issues raised by you and is ready to do so in future as well. Please let us know the date and time, as convenient to you, for the next round,” said the letter.

Three new farm laws were passed with little debate in September amid an opposition boycott in the parliament where India’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a majority.

The government says the laws will modernise farming and increase the incomes of farmers.
But the farmers fear they aim to ease regulations around storage and marketing of crops will benefit big corporations and leave them at the mercy of the free market.

Farmer unions’ leaders say the laws would lead to the end of state-regulated buying of crops and a system of government-set minimum prices for their produce.

Several rounds of talks between leaders of the farmers’ group and the government have failed to break the deadlock.

The government has offered to amend the laws and said the regulated purchase and support prices of crops would stay but the protesters, largely from Punjab and Haryana, insist that the laws be repealed.

“We don’t believe in the government’s assurances, we want concrete proposals, not meaningless amendments … these laws are a death warrant for farmers,” union leader Darshan Pal said.

Farmers groups were open to further talks with the government, which must show that it had an open mind and good intentions, Pal said.

Farmer unions’ leaders have also accused the government of trying to weaken and discredit them by describing protesting farmers as “anti-nationals”.

“You are dealing with protesting farmers in a manner as if they are not aggrieved citizens but political rivals,” Samyukta Kisan Morcha, or United Farmers’ Front, a coalition of farmers unions, said in a letter addressed to the ministry on Thursday.

“Farmers would be compelled to intensify their agitation further for their survival if the government continued to treat them in this manner,” the letter said.

The protesters said they were prepared for the long haul and new groups were coming in while some returned home, said Ashutosh Mishra, spokesman for a forum of farmer unions.

The farmers are parked near at least five border points on main roads leading into New Delhi which are now partially blocked.

They cook and eat on the roads, sleep in tractors and trolleys turned into temporary shelters which trail for up to 10km (6 miles) at places.

“Hundreds of volunteers, NGOs and sympathetic local people are helping to keep the protest alive,” Mishra said.

Near the Singhu border, locals have opened their homes so that the women among the protesters can use the toilets.

“One gentleman in Panipat brought a tractor-load of cauliflower one day, a person with a dairy is giving 250 litres [66 gallons] of milk every day, farmers go back to their villages to bring vegetables, grains. People, especially from the Sikh community, have donated blankets and tents.”

Opposition demands repeal of laws

Meanwhile, India’s main opposition Congress party pressed the government to call a special parliamentary session to withdraw the new agricultural laws.

“The prime minister wants to help two, three business people” by introducing the farm laws, said Rahul Gandhi, the great-grandson of India’s founding prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

“The farmers will not go home,” he told reporters after meeting President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday to demand a joint session of parliament “to discuss and repeal the laws”.

Police in New Delhi detained dozens of Congress leaders and workers as they tried to march towards the presidential residence, including Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul’s sister.

Police said in a statement 58 men and six women protesters, including several leaders, were detained for violating the coronavirus pandemic measures. They were released later, police said.

This is a two faced government pretending to show they want to talk while at the same time trying everything to sabotage and undermine the protest.

Every farmer that dies in this is a mark against the Modi government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday released the next instalment of PM-Kisan, the direct cash-transfer scheme for farmers, worth Rs18,000 crore into bank accounts of 9 crore farmers. The outreach comes amid ongoing farmers’ protests against the three laws passed by the Parliament in September to reform the farm sector.

“It was the initiative of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government to ensure farmers get loan on low interest rates. Today is his birthday and we have marked the day by releasing an instalment of the PM-KISAN scheme. These initiatives of the government should help farmers in undertaking crop diversification,” PM Modi said while interacting with a beneficiary of the scheme from Odisha.

On Thursday, the PM had tweeted that he was going to interact with farmers after releasing the next instalment of PM-Kisan, and said that the day is very important for the country’s ‘annadatas’. “Tomorrow’s day (Friday) is very important for the country’s Annadatas. Will get the opportunity to release the next installment of PM-Kisan for more than 9 crores farmer families through video conferencing at 12pm. Will also interact with farmers of many states on this occasion,” the PM had tweeted.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Arun Singh wrote a letter to party functionaries and listed a series of steps to ensure that the prime minister’s speech gets a wide viewership. The party made arrangements for farmers’ participation in more than 19,000 venues across the country.

Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Union minister Smriti Irani, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and state deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya were among the senior party leaders who attended the event. BJP chief JP Nadda had instructed all party MPs, MLAs and other leaders to tune in to the programme.

The first instalment of the PM-Kisan scheme was released by the PM in 2019.

India: Modi addresses farmers, claims opposition fuelling fears

A month into enormous farmer protests that have rattled his administration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held virtual talks with Indian farmers, asking them to explain how the government’s agricultural policies have benefitted them.

Thousands of farmers from several Indian states have been camped on the outskirts of New Delhi for weeks, blocking highways to demand that Modi’s government repeal farm laws passed in September that they say threaten their livelihoods.

But Modi’s virtual public address on Friday was not focused on the laws under contention.

Instead, he spoke via video conferencing to seven farmers from different states, asking them how they had benefitted from “PM Kisan” – a cash transfer scheme his government launched in February 2019, under which farmers get minimum income support.

The government says the three laws approved by parliament in September will enable farmers to market their produce and boost production through private investment.

“Through these agricultural reforms, we have given better options to the farmers,” Modi said in his live address.

He lauded the laws as much-needed reforms that would benefit farmers, as he accused opposition parties of spreading fears among farmers that they will be exploited by corporations.

Those making big speeches today did nothing for farmers when they were in power,” Modi said.

Modi’s outreach came a day after India’s main opposition party called for a special parliamentary session to withdraw the new laws.

“The prime minister wants to help two, three business people” by introducing the farm laws, said Rahul Gandhi, a senior leader from the opposition Congress party, on Thursday.

He led a party delegation to President Ram Nath Kovind, seeking his intervention for the repeal of the laws.

Last week, Manoj Yadav, director-general of police in the northern Haryana state, told Al Jazeera at least 25 farmers have died since November 26 when the protests began.

Haryana, along with Punjab, is an epicentre of the rallies.

“Fourteen deaths were due to natural causes, mostly heart attacks and cold,” Yadav said, adding one person died by suicide.

At least 10 people died in separate road accidents as they travelled from Punjab and Delhi states to participate in the protests, the police officer said........

Modi calls farmer protests over contested laws politically motivated

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that protests by farmers against three laws brought by his government were politically motivated, as he touted the success of an agricultural scheme launched last year.

Thousands of farmers from several Indian states have been camped on the outskirts of New Delhi for over a month, blocking highways to demand that Modi’s government repeal the farm laws passed in September that they say threaten their livelihoods.

But Modi’s virtual public address on Friday was not focused on the laws under contention.

Instead, he spoke via video conferencing to seven farmers from different states, asking them how they had benefited from ‘PM Kisan’ - a cash transfer scheme his government launched in February, 2019, under which farmers get minimum income support.

The farmers Modi spoke with on Friday praised his scheme - but none were among the thousands who have been protesting.

Modi repeatedly said “some people” were spreading lies and rumours about farmers’ troubles, and dismissed the protests as motivated by political opponents.

“All these people who are protesting in support of farmers, what did they do when they were in power?” he said, referring to opposition politicians. “Those with political motives...are firing the gun from the farmers’ shoulders.”

Modi also said he was open to discussions with farmers. “I ask even those opposing me today, that my government is ready to talk to them on farmer issues...I urge our farmers to not be misled by anyone.”

At least six rounds of talks between Modi’s government and farmer leaders on the new laws have failed.

Modi used his address to also to take a dig at his political rivals, chiefly the fiery leader of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, ahead of legislative assembly elections in the state in 2021. Modi alleged that Banerjee’s government was not allowing the farmers in its state to benefit from Modi’s federal scheme.

Akalis were kicked out in the last elections while the mass murdering Modi whose failures make Tughlaq look intelligent will probably keep on winning elections.

Modi and his bhakts seem to have decided to make it Hindu vs Sikh - every Sikh is now a Khalistani- they really want to go down this path.

This is a cruel, inhuman government which will have no qualms in pushing Punjab back to those horrible days and destroy Punjab's hard won peace. So many farmers have already died and now they want to bring back terror and destroy more lives in Punjab.

Weird only in 2014 was Modi voted in first time
how many times have Akalis been voted in?

Yes, Modi wins elections on the basis of vote of Indians across the country and not on the basis of people sitting in Australia or Khalistanis dancing in Canada or UK.

This is sad and there should not be hindu vs sikh. I support sikh's right to khalistan the same way I support hindu rashtra for us hindus. The goal of both is same, so we should work together to get the country for stateless khalistanis and us stateless hindus. The only two major religions without a state of their own.

The 136th foundation day of the Indian National Congress will be observed through various campaigns on December 28. The All India Congress Committee has earlier asked the state units to come up with innovative campaign ideas to connect with the youth. Tiranga Yatra and Selfie with Tiranga are two campaigns that the party has launched apparently to engage with people on nationalism plank. However, Rahul Gandhi is out of India and will be away for a few days, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala confirmed on Sunday after reports of Rahul Gandhi’s leaving India a day ahead of the party’s foundation day started doing the rounds on social media.

The focus of this foundation day will also be on the ongoing farmers’ protest which the party has been supporting from the beginning. Rahul Gandhi has also sharpened his attack on the government and PM Modi regarding the farmers’ protest.

The Indian National Congress was formed on December 28, 1885, and its first session was held in then Bombay from December 28 to December 31. Umesh Chandra Banerjee was the first president of Congress.

“INC has been at the forefront in the efforts to forge a secular, democratic and united India, an India which is a world leader in all fields and has always put India first despite all odds and obstacles. The INC fought for and won India’s independence, forged the constitutional idea of India, built up the nation from one of the poorest (when India gained independence) in the world to a global superpower,” AICC said in its press release.

The anniversary comes at a time when the Grand Old Party is battling crises both inside and outside. The electoral crisis has been aggravated by a rebellion inside as several veteran Congress leaders, including a few former CMs, wrote a letter demanding organisational reforms in the party.

On December 19, Congress president Sonia Gandhi met the dissenters and several other senior leaders at her 10, Janpath residence where it has been indicated that there will be an election for the president post. It was learnt that most leaders in the meeting opined that they want Rahul Gandhi as the president. The last election was held in 1997 under Sitaram Kesri at the Calcutta plenary.

Chandigarh: More than 1,500 of Reliance Jio's 9,000 telecom towers in Punjab have been put out of action, allegedly by farmers protesting against the farm laws, disrupting service in parts of the state. A representative of the telecom company told NDTV that the towers have taken a hit due to physical damage, power disruption or theft of generator.
Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh issued a stern warning today against vandalisation of mobile towers and disruption of telecom services in the state, and asked the police to take strict action in such cases.

Over the last week, farmers have been venting anger against Reliance, snapping power supply, cutting cables of telecom towers and damaging infrastructure of the firm owned by Mukesh Ambani, seen as one of the major beneficiaries of the farm laws.

In Jalandhar, some bundles of Jio's fibre cable were burnt. Videos of Jio employees being threatened and made to flee have been widely circulated.

The state police had not taken action against the perpetrators so far.

But today, the Chief Minister said he would not allow Punjab by plunged into anarchy or tolerate destruction of any private or public property. Pointing out that his government had not objected to, or stopped, peaceful protests in the state, he said damage to property and inconvenience to people will not be tolerated.

Mr Singh also reminded the farmers that such communication breakdown will be costly for students, especially those preparing for Board Exams and professionals working from home due to the Covid outbreak. Even banking services, largely dependent on online transactions now, are taking a major hit, he said.

The farmers have been losing patience as thousands wait on the borders of Delhi, demanding that the Centre scrap the farm laws - a demand the government is not ready to grant.

Several rounds of meeting have been held between the protesters and the Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar and one with his cabinet colleague, Union home minister Amit Shah.

But the deadlock has persisted - a situation the government is now hoping to resolve with another meeting on Wednesday.

The farmers of the country's grain bowl - Punjab and Haryana - have been hugely upset over the farm laws, which they fear would lead to phasing out of the guaranteed prices offered by the government and allow corporates to exploit them.

Comments
The government's repeated assurances that the laws would help them get better prices for their produce and that the Minimum Support Prices will remain, have not been able to address their concerns.

Hitting out at the Central government for “not listening” to the farmers protesting farm laws, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday said that the reports of death of farmers sitting on Delhi borders in this chilly weather are “disturbing” and the Centre is acting “insensitively” towards them.

“The reports of death of farmers sitting on Delhi borders in this chilly weather are disturbing. According to several media reports, nearly 57 farmers have lost their lives and hundreds have fallen sick. The Central Government is acting insensitively by not listening to the farmers’ legitimate demands which has been going on for more than a month”, Priyanka Gandhi tweeted.

On December 28, 2020, Priyanka Gandhi had said, “Central Government is answerable to farmers. Government should listen to them and take back these laws.”

In December, no permission was granted to Congress’ march to Rashtrapati Bhavan and only three leaders, who had appointments were allowed to go there.

Also, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to lead Congress MPs’ protest march from Vijay Chowk to Rashtrapati Bhavan to submit a memorandum containing 2 crore signatures to President Ram Nath Kovind seeking his intervention over farmers’ protest.

Farmers have been protesting at different borders of the national capital for over a month against the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

From my limitedunderstanding Gov is eliminating "minimum wage" or basic pricing of crops for farmers
I learnt about this in a Vox video so you know don't expect me to know everything

My sincerest advise for Indians is "fight it like your life depends on it"
US did the same "reforms" along the same lines

Our farmers and rural America is suffering badly from poverty, drug problem and every poverty related crime

peoples with acres of land (in US people have lot more land because of its size) are barely scrapping by with people on the farms getting second jobs

One of the worst paying profession in the country (don't go by how they look fat people in US are poor people)

The reforms absolutely destroyed farmers especially the family farms they just cant survive (remember their land is way bigger than what most people in the "pind" have)

but its really good for the consumers if that's important...

If this law is passed pack your bag, sell your lands and move to cities cause small farming as you know it would come to an end in about 5-10 years... (or your income would severely decrease)

No matter the economics, and I have heard rational arguments from multiple sides now, this is bad politics for BJP. I wonder what made them take this step after the CAA debacle. If you want to win elections in India, just stick to your welfare economics. No need to liberate industries etc.

When it comes to the Hindutuva, Muslims are just the 1st to be crushed, the Sikhs better be careful. Hopefully it's a wake up call for other minorities

India will forever remain a developing country if it sticks to welfare economics. These reforms are important, hope strict action is taken against any farmer that's been vandalising property or blocking roads.

It was learnt that most leaders in the meeting opined that they want Rahul Gandhi as the president. .

The most important bit of the article. Excellent, looks like BJP will be unbeatable.. Thank you Ammayi Sonya :rp

There is a lot of animosity between Sikhs and Muslims, just like between Christians and Muslims in some quarters. The minorities is not a uniform block just like the majority is not a uniform block either.

I sincerely hope that it doesn't come to these drastic choices. India, whilst far from being ideal, is a pluralistic country and have always been accommodating of different faiths (in spite of occasional hiccups).

When it comes to the Hindutuva, Muslims are just the 1st to be crushed, the Sikhs better be careful. Hopefully it's a wake up call for other minorities

I understand your point, but it's not a choice. I am an Economist and yet I say this: It doesn't matter what your policies are, NO government can afford these protests and bad PR.

There is a reason only Welfare economists from India win Nobel prize in Economics.

Which charities can UK ppers donate to?

Also what is the latest? Will their requests be accepted or is the government playing the long waiting game hoping they will give up?

If you can share links that would help

They really are doing gods work if they manage to stop the law thier future generations would thank them

People from those regains (even if they live in the cities) should fight this law with everything they have

This has the potential to transform thier life for the worse...
I know how these laws work and I am genuinely scared for them

Thanks for your support and yeah there is a very good reason why these farmers have left their home and hearth and are camping in the streets in such hostile weather.

This website is infested with Modi supporters and I don't want to name any of the charities on here for that reason as they could get into trouble but if you follow Sandeep Singh@PunYaab and Amaan@amaanbali on twitter you can get some idea about the charities that are helping on the ground.

I am not sure about the charities that the UK based ppers can donate to - I donated to a charity that I think is doing good work on the ground.

Modi is too full of himself and too much in the pocket of his fellow Gujurati businessmen to give up on his black laws.
This is a cruel government which does not care for human lives.

Haryana farmers, protesting against the three Central farm laws, ransacked the venue of chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar's Kisan Mahapanchayat, in a Karnal village on Sunday and clashed with the cops and the pro-farm laws congregation, despite huge police presence.

Protesting farmers went past the barriers erected by the state police on the road to Kaimla village and arrived at the helipad where the CM was scheduled to land and ransacked the place. Farmers managed to reach the venue despite being stopped some 3km away by the police.

The protestors, who easily outnumbered the police, vandalised the event venue which led to a major scuffle with the organisers of the Kisan Panchayat.

According to eyewitnesses, a clash first broke out between the farmers marching towards the helipad and the police, which was trying to stop the protesters.

When the protesters reached the venue of the Kisan Panchayat, the villagers in favour of the panchayat tried to stop the protesting farmers. However, the protesters outnumbered the cops and the pro-Kisan Panchayat organisers and ransacked the venue, sending cops scurrying for cover.

The police used tear gas in an attempt to contain the crowd. The protesting farmers assembled around the venue while police’s attempt to control the situation with the help of the locals failed.

The chief minister is yet to reach the venue. His mahapanchayat was aimed to drum up support for the three contentious agriculture laws that have triggered widespread protests in North India.

All the roads leading to the village had been blocked by the police with the help of trucks laden with construction material, parked on the roads, to avoid the entry of farmers protesting against the laws. However, it didn’t work.

Additional forces from the nearby districts had been called in and duty magistrates were appointed to monitor the law and order situation in Karnal.

The farmer union leaders, protesting against the farm laws, first gathered at Karnal's Bastara toll plaza on national highway 44, better known as Delhi-Chandigarh highway.

Jagdeep Singh Aulakh, a local leader of The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Charuni, accused the chief minister and BJP leadership of attempting to divide farmers by holding such meetings.

"What is the logic of holding such meetings in the favour of agriculture laws when the farmers’ stir at Delhi borders (against the laws) has entered its 45th day,” he questioned.

Put Farm Laws On Hold Or We Will Do It, Chief Justice Tells Government

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today asked the central government whether it would pause the implementation of three controversial farm laws at the core of massive farmer protests near Delhi, saying the situation had gone worse. "Tell us whether you will put the laws on hold or else we will do it. What's the prestige issue here?"
The court's sharp remarks came during a hearing on petitions challenging the farm laws and the farmer agitation at the Delhi borders.

"Each one of us we will responsible if anything goes wrong. We don't want any injuries or blood on our hands," Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said in sharp remarks.

As the centre asked for more time, referring to ongoing negotiations, Justice Bobde said: "We don't see you are dealing with this issue effectively. We are taking a decision today. Who is going to be responsible for bloodshed if any?"

The top court suggested that after the implementation of the laws was stayed, the protest could continue. "But decide whether you want to carry on the protest on the same site or move to other," it said.

In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court had noted that there was no improvement on the ground, and it was told by the Centre that "healthy discussions" were going on between the government and the unions over all outstanding issues.

"We have asked in the last hearing but no answer. The situation has gone worse. People have committed suicide. Why are the old and the women part of the agitation in this weather?" the Chief Justice questioned the government.

lol, what will feku do now? Has he ever retracted even from his most disastrous policy decisions?

India’s Supreme Court says Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government should pause the implementation of the three farm laws passed recently while the concerns of the farmers, protesting for more than a month against the legislations, are heard.

Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde said in a hearing on Monday the drawn-out confrontation was causing distress to farmers. He said the court would pass orders if the two sides remained at an impasse.

“Tell us whether you will put the laws on hold or else we will do it … What’s the prestige issue here?” the court asked, as it criticised the government for failing to break the deadlock.

“We are extremely disappointed at the way government is handling all this,” Bobde said. “We don’t know what consultative process you followed before the laws. Many states are up in rebellion.”

Tens of thousands of farmers have been camped on the outskirts of the capital, New Delhi, for more than a month, with at least eight rounds of talks between the government and farmers’ groups unable to break the deadlock.

The farmers have promised to march during Republic Day celebrations on January 26 against what they see as laws benefitting large private buyers at the expense of producers.

Modi’s government says the legislation is aimed at modernising an antiquated agricultural system, which suffers from colossal wastage and bottlenecks in the supply chain.

But farm leaders say the laws are an attempt to erode a longstanding minimum support price for their crops, and will enable a few corporates to control the country’s vast agricultural sector.

The government has earlier said there was “no question” of a repeal of the laws. The two sides are set to next meet on Friday.

Pity, SC couldn't show the similar urgency while anti CAA protests were going on.

Pity, SC couldn't show the similar urgency while anti CAA protests were going on.

Been more than a year, but SC still sitting on the petitions on CAA. Supreme Idiots. They can only override the govt if a law goes against the basic principles of the COI, which was the case being put forward for CAA, and which doesn't apply to the farm laws. But idiot milords continue to embarrass themselves.
