An Argentine news channel has come under fire for displaying an image of the Simpsons character Apu as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Buenos Aires.

Cronica TV used the headline "Apu arrives" as the Indian PM's plane touched down for the G20 summit.

Some say the portrayal of the Indian shopkeeper is racist.

It's an indication of how the producers of the Argentinian news channel, and presumably it's viewers, see a link between Apu and Modi. And considering that it's the BBC that has reported the article, it means that the BBC (which is not some 'random' news channel) also deems it as being newsworthy enough to interest it's viewers/readers.

"Presumably its viewers" is a rather major jump.

The BBC has not compared Modi with Apu. The BBC is reporting what a random news channel did, and saying that there is public outrage over it.

I think what confuses many people in the UK is that American Indians tend to be from south India, whereas British Indians were mostly from the north, so they look quite a lot different. Even the Walking Dead Indian characters have always looked very different from the ones we see here in the UK.

Interersting. I was travelling around Sout Asia this summer and saw a lot of Indians, they all looked the same. Like Apu but not as well groomed.

Naveen is a very actor, he was brilliant as Syed in Lost, my favourite character. Are you sure it wasn't his acting skills which clinched the part for him? There aren't that many great Indian actors who speak good English.

Naveen is British and we are very much differen to the folks who live in the sub-continent. We may look similiar but carry ourselves very different, no head nodding etc. Im assuming the producers wanted some British swag on their show.
