Indian call center scam is a big industry that steals money from people worldwide. It doesn't seem like Indian government is doing enough to stop it. So, what can other countries do? How can other countries ensure their citizens do not get scammed by these Indian call center scams?

Indian scam call centres looted over $10 billion in 11 months from US senior citizens this year

By the end of the year, Indian scam call centres will loot about $12 billion from senior citizens and other non-tech-savvy people in the US alone. FBI’s data shows that this is a 47 per cent increase from last year.

Data from the US’ Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI showed that US citizens have lost more than $10 billion to call centres running scams. These call centres operate as startups or fake customer service call centres and offer tech help to unsuspecting victims, who get scammed into sharing their personal details or worse, access to credit card or bank accounts.

Some of these scammers have even tried to get their hands dirty with romance-related phishing scams.

The data that the FBI released showed that of the $10.2 billion that was looted from American citizens, about $3 billion was done through call centres offering tech help over a VoIP call, and the rest through various other means. All this data was collected over the first 11 months of the year, and the FBI estimates that by the end of the calendar, year, the figure maybe as high as $12 billion. In just these 11 months, the figure saw an increase of 47 per cent, over last year’s $6.9 billion.

Reports state that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has appointed a permanent representative at the US embassy in New Delhi to collaborate closely with the CBI, Interpol, and Delhi Police to break up these phishing gangs and recover money sent via wire and digital currencies to scamming organisations based in India. The FBI is worried that Indian-based phishing gangs are scamming elderly Americans of their life savings.

According to the legal attache to the US embassy in India, Suhel Daud, most of these scam victims are senior citizens over the age of 60. Daud claims that although it is not now a national security threat for either India or the US, it nonetheless contributes significantly to harming our nation’s image. He said that the FBI is ready to close any gaps in the investigation by providing evidence to the local law enforcement agencies so they may bring charges against the implicated parties.

Hope Trump and Modi with the help of FBI puts an end to this scam call nonsense. Every scamster needs to face the full force of law.

I have received a couple of calls too in the last 1 year. They called in as insurance agent from my car insurance company and told me there is some discrepancy and wanted me to tell them my social security number and home address. Too bad for them, I saw right through it and gave them some choicest Gaalis before hanging up.

There are hundreds of videos of these scam callers getting caught on YouTube.

Americans are thick as poo. I don’t care if you have Dementia, you don’t get fooled by Michael from Delhi asking you to travel to your local Walmart to buy a 2000$ Amazon gift card.
Older generation are not tech savvy at all. These are the people that still use cash to pay at Walmart. They are too scared to use credit cards.

Ive had similar calls, I think his screen name was David from London. I told him im not with BT but he said it doesnt matter, open your laptop as there is a virus.

I wasted his time for 40 mins while watching football highlights and then told him, I think your name is not David and your from India. He was angry.

LOL. Found this gem:

.

This Indian female scammer was trying to scam an old lady (it was actually a hacker but scammer didn't know).

The hacker ended up getting access to her system and exposing her. She started to cry and begged the hacker not to expose her. Funny.

@KingKhanWC, check this out.

Scammers are there in other countries as well. Its just that Indians can speak better english than uneducated nations like BD or Pak, their numbers are more. There are scammers from Ind, Pak, Phil, Nigeria, SA etc.

Btw, check this latest video from same scam sandwich channel. Guess where the scammers are located?

This thread is about Indian call center scams. Do not derail the thread.

India has this issue far worse.

There is no derailing. You are somehow potraying scam centers only exist in India is a wrong notion. I see most of these scam baiting channels in youtube - The Hoax Hotel, Kitbooga, Scam Sandwich etc and there are scammers from many countries. It may not be there from Bangladesh but that is more to do with their lack of English speaking skills.

Don't worry about derailing the thread. It is an excuse for some posters here when they can't debate. Moderators are there to judge derailing or not.

Well done for wasting his 40 minutes.

There are now hackers/scum busters who are targeting these scammers.

One example:

This sort of thing doesn't help the reputation of hard working Indians. Feel sorry for the abuse that decent Indians must put up with every day when dealing with British customers. Many of them must be galled to get called the P-word.

Bangladeshi guy wants to show India in poor light. He is desperate.

Please post statistics for these scammers. Have they cost honest Americans 10 billion?

Otherwise yes it's derailing. If Indians are like the bank robbers from scammers you are trying to compare with some Nigerian or Bangladeshi who has stole a sweetie from a shop.

I fully expect Indian posters to derail the thread.

Thread is about Indian call center scams. India has this issue far worse than any other country.

Rather than acknowledging the problem, they are derailing the thread. Shameless mindset.

The fact that you are stressing on the word Indians while discussing scammers kind of highlight your true intention. Scammers are scammers i.e robbers...discuss them as much as you want. But if you want to bring nationality into it and start generalizing, you will be given appropriate response. Then you can't cry deviating from the topic.

Ok here's a more recent one.

Old or new this is reality and wont change. The problem for Indians is they are terrible at accents. Even when they try to put on an English or American accent you can hear the teeth clamp together.

Nobody is going to believe you are Trevor if you start by ...Hilooo.

Because its so regular and almost all have experienced this, people see Indians in bad light and resort to racism. I never did as I know most Indians are not in call centres trying to scam , most are now at the Mexico/US border running from Trumps bullets.

@sweep_shot are you clear on this? Or you want me to explain a bit more?

Usual suspects here are still defending Pakistani grooming gangs I see.

But, it’s ok to mention the nationality when it comes to grooming gangs?

This made me laugh so hard. This hacker was trolling the Indian call center scammer. The scammer lost it completely and started to curse.

LOL!!!!!!!

First of, the call center industry exists in both India and Pakistan, and scamming is being done from both countries.

The reason why India has more "scam" call centers is not because of English or education. To run this scam you dont need education and as I have lived in both countries, English is spoken and understood alot better in Pakistan.

Scammers are more in India because you can get away with the law there more easily and there are more desperate people there due to a large population. If your country allows a scam call center to operate than the laws of that country are really shaddy.

You can offcourse find one video on Pakistani call centers, but you will find 10 more on Indian call centers...

Your post is soo ridiculous that you are claiming that because people of India are more Educated and are better at speaking English, they are more involved in scam call centers. You just admitted that more scammers are in India

No one has issues with call centers, issue is with scam call centers.

Shows you the mindset of some Indian posters here. They are morally bankrupt.

Another entertaining scam bust.

Scammer is from Dehradun, India. The hacker (Jim Browning) got the scammer's personal information and he trolled the scammer. Mr. Browning collaborated with a professional prankstar named Russell.

It’s a huge problem in India, nowadays it’s not only targeting westerners but also Indians as well.

Police gets a cut from these scams so they turn a blind eye.

The whole system is rotten to the core, the only thing one can do is be aware and share it with their relatives/friends not to fall for these scams.

Scammer are present in every nation but in these kinds of scams, India is next level. Not saying because I hate any country, saying because 10 billion $ is an amount Pakistan cannot reach. pakistan is too behind in IT sector atm...

Have seen many YT channels about scammers catching videos like Jim browning, Pirogi etc.. Most of the time it was a scam call center in India... Most of the time.

Do they target Indians in the same way as westerners or is it a different type of scam?

Different kind of scams.

They pretend to be from government departments or banks or courier companies etc and target to get your bank account details.

These days the most popular scam is someone wearing a police uniform and video calling you saying you are under digital arrest since your Aadhaar card was used to send some drug’s or embezzle money through hawala or some ****, then they ask you to transfer x amount of money as a bribe to be free from this case.

There are reported cases of actual doctors falling for this scam and losing lakhs of rupees.

Ironically, some of the scam calls are coming from +92 number which I believe is Pakistani country code, so it seems Pakistanis are now actually targeting Indians for these kind of scams as well.

Ya, and unfortunately that’s only going to increase in the future.

Problem is when unemployment/poverty is so high in a country, the moral values of that nation goes out for a toss. Compared to western nations, the moral values amongst sub continent folks is quite low. Even today, a lot of Indians won’t consider scamming someone online in another country as a crime.

Government can’t impose strict laws or jail these people since they can’t provide enough work to them and jails are already overcrowded. So they are happy that these kind of scams run as long they target non Indians as it keeps people employed and jails and courts unclogged (comparative to if they had to put a stop to these scams).

The ones in the videos above with their faces shown are bottom of the barrel scammers.

The bigger fish find a way to hide.

This would probably make for an interesting thread in it's own right, but quite a lot to unpack there first.

Im sure this is the case.

Other nations should bring this to the Indian governments attention and come up a deal. Once proven the scam originated in India, allow 3 months for local authorities to act upon them.....if not the GOI pays the money stolen from the customers.

Too much effort, and the creaking elephant that is the Indian government will be gamed by the scammers themselves.

Raise the price of oil by a $ per 10 scams discovered, then they will act. Put the fear of god (ie: money) into them.

Or tell them that there will be a Times or Washington Post cover with Modi on it in a bad news setting.

It used be known as mostly Nigerians 10 years ago. Those have almost disappeared now, so it seems something has been done at government level.

As you can see in the BBC docu, the pain it causes people esp the elderly who are vulnerable isn't acceptable. The UK government needs to offer them help if they have been scammed and implement measures to keep the elderly safe from such scams.

Nigerian scammers never graduated from the early days of the Internet - nothing to do with the Nigerian government, which is probably an even worse place than the Indian government.

Why hasn't the UK done anything/much about it so far?

Why hasn't the UK done anything/much about it so far?

Interpol did a huge operation and arrested, locked up many of the leaders of the Nigerian scamming groups. Many locked up in USA, UK too.

The UK is no longer the rich, social nation it once was. The government has sold out to elites, will spend money on wars and foreign aid but will allow their pensioners to suffer. Many die every winter due to not affording heating. They must protect the elderly against scams and also make sure they are given all they need, these people have paid huge taxes throughout their lives.

Its a shame that people resort to scamming. Im not surprised that Pakistanis are doing it too.

Indians trying to divert to scams from other nation is just a distraction. If anyone lives in the West that's not Indian origin, they know that all investigation and data focuses on India on this issue. Other countries are tiny in this regard.

It isn't just US citizens. My father in India got a call last month from a supposed 'Delhi Cyber Cell' telling him that a lot of illegal texts had originated from his phone and he was in big trouble; the callers meticulously laid out in detail what he could do to resolve the situation .. which included wiring them a fee lol.

Any millenial or gen-Z would have immediately realised it was a scam but baby-boomers are not that tech savvy.

Exactly.

They are trying to derail the thread to another direction (like they often do). But, we see through it.

:qdkcheeky

So let me get this straight.

One of the richest countries in the world, upcoming economic powerhouse blah blah blah is scamming foreigners for money at the tune of $10B a year.

The only scam there is, is India.

what was the fee amount? It makes sense to target americans because even a few hundred dollars is big money in India so you can have even a 1 in 1000 hit rate and still be up. But what amounts are they trying to extract from locals as it must surely be significant enough to go to all this effort?

Agree.

Indian scammers steal billions of Dollars from around the world.

Why does Indian government not do anything about it? Is it because these scammers contribute to India's GDP? If that is the case, their GDP is tainted I must say.

I wonder how many 'Rupinders' there are along with Vishal Sharmas in India. The way Rupinder was crying and begging the scam-baiter! 👌😂

India has already been caught faking GDP details.

The Indian government's cyber team are only interested censorship when it threatens the Hindutva cult agenda.

Apart from 1 pseudo Indian in this thread everyone else has been quite vocal about the issue and want it to stop.

Your hatred for India/Indians shows through your posts, it must be really sad to live such a life filled with so much hatred in your heart against random folks you don’t even know.

I really hope you find peace someday.
That will happen when Israel ceases to exist.

There are some Indians here who fail to condemn bad things done by Indians. I was referring to those people.

I don't hate India per se. I dislike BJP and their supporters (there are many of them here).

You need to work on your comebacks. Your comebacks tend to be poor like Ashok Dinda's bowling. :qdkcheeky

Israel has nothing to do with this thread. Don't derail.

Unemployment/poverty is one factor but not the only reason for the decline in moral values. Outside of the subcontinent, there are many countries with poorer economies and higher inflation but they have much higher moral values and you don’t hear about them being negatively stereotyped. My take is the core issues stem from diversity and large sections of the population not being homogeneous. Indians take pride in being identified as Indians but they are not unified and culture plays a key role in shaping people’s behaviour. In countries like Pakistan India where people are divided by caste, religion, language and race it’s impossible to set moral standards and expect people to adhere to them. To make matters worse, the huge divide between rich and the poor perpetuates this moral decline as the rich folks live in a completely different reality than the poor folks.
People here acts like they are free of fault but the truth is, given the opportunity most people would compromise on their moral principles if that brought them power and riches because greed is something inherent in every human. You can’t expect the leaders to fix the system in Pakistan and India because that wouldn’t be in their best interest. They use religion and nationalism to stay in power but deep down their beliefs are as hollow as a tree trunk.

Looking at the Pakistani scammers, I wonder how many of the guys "working as private software engineers" are not what they say they are.

Same in India. Any "tech support" job in Kolkata only means one thing.

Kolkata seems to be the heart of these scamming operations, it gets mentioned a lot.

Kolkata might be most notorious state, however, Noida, Gurgaon, Delhi, Bihar etc all have scam centres running since many years.

It happens in Pak and Bang too, they're just afraid of admitting it.

This happens in India far worse.

People don't attribute call center scams to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, or Nepal. They attribute it to India.

Everything that happens in the rest of the subcontinent gets attributed to India too.

Pak, Bang, SriLanka are unknown entities to the rest of the world and therefore the former's actions get categorised to the 'Indian' tag.

Looking at the inflation, corruption and unemployment in Pakistan, I am pretty sure a lot of young guys are indulged in such "jobs". You meet any engineer or an mba/bba person in Pak and they'll tell you me and my friends have our own "business company". Of the few root causes of this evil is unchecked amount of universities handing out degrees. Nowadays youngsters don't really have to work that hard to become "Doctors, engineers" etc The degrees which used to be considered very hard to attain and only for the cream of the crop. There are 100s of universities providing degrees to any C grade student providing they keep submitting their "tuition fees" in their respective universities. There's no check and balance now. I have seen juniors who could barely pass out from high school to getting the so called prestigious degrees like Mbbs now.

Kolkata is the biggest scam center in the world. There are many youtibers who work on busting these scammers. They deserve the depths of hell for looting old folks of their saving.

I have seen juniors who could barely pass out from high school to getting the so called prestigious degrees like Mbbs now.

You are probably right.

I was highlighting India here because Indians like to highlight Pakistanis/Bangladeshis/Muslims/Blacks and they engage in generalization. They act like Indians can do no wrong. So, I am highlighting what their countrymen do.

Bro we can't stoop to their levels. Every country has good and bad people. There are thousands of good people in India as well who don't act like there's nothing wrong in their country and call it as it is. I have met a lot of Indians who are very friendly people and harbour no hate for Muslims or Pakistanis or Bangladeshis etc.

Yes. I agree with you. We shouldn't generalize.

This hacker managed to hack into CCTV cameras of the scammer's office. Pretty incredible and entertaining.

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

Part 4:

Indian call center scammer trying to scam a 13-year old Australian school girl. You have to be really evil and heartless to scam a child. Very upsetting to watch.

Another evil action from one of the Indian scammers. Scamming 75+ years old.

.. this guy is a 'money mule' for a large criminal enterprise based in India. These people prey on elderly folks using a number of different methods ranging from fake warrants they tell people they have or computer popup messages that tell them to call a phone number for help with their bank accounts etc.

The first 5 minutes of this video is a recorded phone call between Police and the 78 year old male victim. This was after he had already picked up over $250k in gold and around $20k in cash from a 77 year old unrelated female victim. The Police then setup a 3rd meeting with a fake package for him to pickup, they then pulled him over after he left.

The guy in the video is a 21 year old from India who was living in Chicago apparently. There is no video of his interview with Police, he did confirm that all the victims he had stolen from are American and that all the people he was sending the gold and money to were from India. He claimed to not know what the money or gold was for even though he had another warrant out for doing the same thing in a different county.

He was charged with:-

FIRST DEGREE GRAND THEFT (812.014(2a1))

2 Counts-ORGANIZED FRAUD-$50,000 OR MORE (817.034(4a1))
