Indian Sikh's turban ripped outside UK parliament in 'racist' attack

An Indian Sikh man's turban was ripped by a white man in an apparent racist attack outside the UK parliament, according to a media report.

Ravneet Singh, 37, from Punjab in India, said he was waiting to enter the Portcullis House, part of the British Parliamentary Estate, to meet Sikh Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi when the assault took place yesterday.

Singh said he was waiting in the queue when the man, who was shouted "Muslim go back", approached him and attempted to remove his turban, a religious headgear worn by Sikh men.

"I was in the queue outside Portcullis House and this guy ran up to us. Just before we got to the entrance he came up to me and attacked me.

"He was pulling at my turban strongly. It half moved and I grabbed it. Before he could do anything else I shouted at him and he ran," he was quoted as saying by The Independent.

Singh said that the man made a "racist comment" in another language that he did not recognise.

"He was a white man, but he didn't sound English. He said something like 'Muslim go back'," he added.

Labour MP Dhesi, who was to host Singh, expressed "disgust" at the incident and sought action against the culprit.

"Disgusted to discover today that someone filled with hatred tried to pull off the turban of one of my guests standing in line outside @UKParliament. I hope the @metpoliceuk /authorities will take urgent action," Dhesi tweeted.

According to the report, the police have confirmed being alerted at 5.20 pm about the assault outside outside Portcullis House, the building adjacent to the Houses of Parliament, which is home to offices for MPs and their staff.

No arrest has been made so far, with the police probing the case.

Not just camera's, security personal and heavy patrolling police presence all around the building that is why i have my doubts about the incident.

It must get a bit confusing for casual racists to distinguish a friendly bearded man with a turban from a terrorist to be fair. Just a case of mistaken identity.

Just the realisation by the natives that they are not great anymore and has virtually no projection influence abroad anymore something they are finding harder to digest , their economy isn't great or are they prospects , austerity is hitting them hard and most of the cash in their country is from foreign investments rich foreigners buying up companies and real estate .

So the right wing media and ruling elite have whipped islamaphobic hatred in the country to concentrate white daves anger on brown faced Muslims or some bunch of Romanians singing on a street corner with a guitar , instead of the real hustlers the ruling elite in particular these Tory toffs

From the victim's own description it seems the perpetrator wasn't a native Brit.

I disagree with this. The UK still has serious influence abroad in terms of the Atlantic bridge, EU and Commonwealth.

In order to avoid paying more tax, some press barons and Neofascists, allied to the Kremlin, have manipulated English and Welsh working class types into diminishing British influence and prosperity, using delusions of a idyllic 1950s world which never existed.

Sad to hear that Brit Paks have forgotten their roots by abandoning their native languages. I guess it's one of the drawbacks of completely integrating in a white dominant society

It's a drawback in some ways, inevitable in others. I actually know the parent's language as it happens, but integration means the old languages eventually become less important anyway over time. Just ask our new British Indian forum member [MENTION=141165]jagatk[/MENTION] if he's still around.

The rise of the Right wing - Extreme Right wing is happening all over the world. Natives are fighting back and they do not want foreigners coming to their lands.

Perhaps Sikh's should propagate their faith more strongly so they are not mistaken for Muslim's. After all, Muslim's, Jews and Christians are never mistaken for each other. The victims comment of the perpetrator shouting Islamophobic abuse is for anyone to believe or not believe, he says that the perpetrator spoke in a foreign language yet he understood the Islamophobic comments! Many Sikh's just like others are simply attacked by racists due to their colour and turbans. This veiled attack on Muslim's that "I was attacked wrongly because he/she though I was a Muslim" is racist itself. It is like saying it is okay to attack Muslim's!

There's no such thing as a beautiful religion. The ugly side of pretty much every religion outweighs its 'beautiful' side but since that is something we only hear about from followers of other religions, any critical views are dismissed as biased.

True. Just look at the trouble turban wearing Canadian Sikhs have caused for Justin Trudeau in his efforts to appease their silly Khalsa movement. While I would never condone pulling anyone's turban as it is assault, you can understand the anger and the root causes behind it.
