A controversial Indian mining tycoon has taken over a royal palace and flown in Brazilian dancers at a reported cost of 5bn rupees (£59m) to celebrate his daughter’s wedding.

Up to 50,000 people were expected on Wednesday at the sprawling Bangalore Palace, a mock Tudor castle in southern India, to celebrate the wedding of Gali Janardhan Reddy’s daughter, who was married in a Hindu ceremony earlier in the day.

Local media criticised the extravagance at a time when many Indians are struggling to find the cash to buy food following the government’s move to pull high-value notes out of circulation in an attempt to tackle tax evasion.

But one associate defended the lavish expenditure, saying Reddy wanted people to remember the wedding of his only daughter.

“It is unfortunate that a daughter’s wedding has been made an issue out of envy and rivalry,” Manju Swamy told AFP before the party. “It’s an important moment for her parents and they wanted to celebrate the event in a way that befits the family’s status in society.”

India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, announced last week that 500- and 1,000-rupee (£6 and £12) notes – 85% of the cash in circulation – would cease to be legal tender.

Indians can change a limited number of old notes for new ones at banks and post offices, but there have been huge queues since they reopened last Thursday after closing for a day following the announcement.

Indians rely heavily on cash for their daily transactions and those living in rural areas or who do not have bank accounts have been particularly hard hit.

The 49-year-old Reddy, a former minister with the ruling Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) in the southern state of Karnataka, spent three years in jail for his alleged involvement in a mining scam before he was released on bail last year.

Speaking to journalists in his home town last week, he refused to reveal how much he was spending on the celebrations, but said everything would be declared to the tax authorities.

Guests received their invitations on LCD devices and helium balloons featuring images of the Reddy family are reported to be floating above the palace.

While some Bangalore residents were appalled at Reddy’s obscene display of wealth at a time of cash crunch, others were sympathetic. “What’s wrong in conducting a daughter’s wedding on a grand scale? The rich and wealthy do it regularly,” said Jayaprakash Rao, a retired government official.

“Reddy is spending from his pocket and not public money,” Rao told AFP.

Indian activist T. Narasimha Murthy put the cost of the wedding at 5bn rupees, a figure that tallied with local media reports.

“Reddy has hired about 3,000 bouncers and security guards to prevent media and activists like me from barging into the venue,” said Murthy, adding he had petitioned local tax authorities to investigate.

This is India, a few filthy rich people spending lavishly while Millions continue to starve.

Its his money (legal or illegal). He did not gather all that wealth to distribute it to the poor.

I don't fault him for spending. Since everyone knows he is corrupt and even went to jail, Govt should question about the money he spent. There should be accountability. If he can prove that the money he spent was legaly earned, then its all sour grapes on the foul criers part.

Can someone please explain how the person has 5b in cash?

Similar to Pak.

Quantitatively speaking, income inequality in Pakistan is among the lowest in the world including both developing and developed nations. The gap seems vast because the baseline incomes are so low that the difference in quality of life between someone just above and just below the baseline seems huge due to the low income levels causing every extra rupee to be worth it's weight in gold.

On the bright side one could argue this is potential black money going back into the Indian economy.

But yeah nonetheless insane amount.

I don't really see a problem. If India was a first world country where there wasn't such a big gap between the rich and poor it might seem obscene, but in the subcontinent where there are still massive class divides it's pretty much par for the course. I doubt the beggars or ragamuffins who can't get in past the bouncers will give a toss. These are the same people who were bundled off the streets for the Olympics in case their raggedy appearance embarrassed the nation in front of watching millions.

Mining is a very lucrative business in certain parts of South India.

His money, his desire. People are jealous that a wealthy man is lavishly spending his hard earned money for his daughter's wedding. If you are close minded like this, you deserve to be poor.

Well apparently it's not hard earned right?

We should worry about our corrupt ones. What some corrupt Indian businessman does is none of our business neither are their starving people.

What a waste of money. Indians take wedding ceremonies way too seriously. The best weddings are the simplest ones.

Politicians never face cash crunch.

Wrong, nothing comes easy. He had to make it happen or else he wouldn't be where he is today. When an average joe claims that his money is "hard earned ", despite his profession only being a desk job we accept it. But when a Billionaire claims his money is "hard earned" we laugh. He may had to bribe 1000s of people face 1000s conflicts to be where he is. Nothing comes easy. According to me, they are hard earned.

He was at the height of his political power part of the ruling BJP government. Sushma Swarajji tried to cover his back when he was implicated and later jailed for illegal mining in the state.

The BJP is a better group generally speaking than the other options but not some saintly corruption-free unit as some of its fans would have everyone believe. As can be noted by their conspicuous silence and absence here. :))

On topic, everyone should be free to do what they want with their wealth without guilt. The question however here is how he amassed his fortune and how much of the money spent for the wedding is non-black money. No one seems to care from the governmental side right now.

Disagree-the Congress is atleast honest in it's dishonesty. The BJP is the perfect example of "ram ram japna paraya maal apna".
There is so much media collusion and intimidation of honest journalists that the true picture of the corruption of the BJP govt never comes out.

Doesn't matter whether it is Black Money or corruption money, at the end of the day it is "hard earned". It didn't come easy to him. If we all can easily be a corrupt billionaire, we all would be one. How am I supporting him ?
