Mother Sold Gold Chain, Father Borrowed Rs 800 For Bat: Son Dhruv Jurel Now Indian Test Cricket Team Member

The Indian cricket board (BCCI), late on Friday, announced the squad for the first two Tests against England. The Indian cricket team will face England in a five-match series staring later this month. Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami missed out due to injury while Ishan Kishan, who asked for a break mid-way through India's Tour of South Africa, was also not picked. However, the inclusion of Uttar Pradesh player Dhruv Jurel headlined the selection. The 22-year-old was a part of India A squad that played two matches against their South African counterparts in December last year.

He had made a 69 in the second match at Benoni and more recently made a 63 for UP against Kerala in a first round group game of the Ranji Trophy at Alappuzha. He has been picked as a third wicketkeeper in the squad.

Jurel, who had made his First-Class debut last year against Vidarbha, has so far made 790 runs from 15 matches at an average of 46 with a hundred and five fifties in the domestic circuit.

Dhruv Jurel's story is very inspiring. Coming from humble background, Dhruv Jurel rose up the ranks and made his name in domestic circuit.

"I used to study in Army School. During holidays I though about joining cricket camp at Eklavya Stadium in Agra. I filled up the form but did not tell my dad. When he came to know, he scolded me. However, he borrowed Rs 800 to buy me a cricket bat. When I told him I needed a cricket kit, dad asked me how much it would cost. I told him about Rs six to seven thousand and he told me to stop playing. But I was adamant and locked myself in the bathroom. Then my mom sold her gold chain and got me cricket kit," Dhruv Jurel told Dainik Jagran.

"My friends told me that I got selected for Indian team. When I told them that I have been selected, they asked me 'which Indian team I got selected?' I told them Rohit bhaiya, Virat Bhaiya wala Indian team. My whole family got emotional after hearing this."

Well good on Indian selectors - trying out someone in home conditions.

Jurel has celebrated his Test call up with pumping a 38 ball 50 against ENG Lions featuring Carse, Fisher, Potts etc.

India will need mentally strong players to win something big now.
Rohit, Kohli, KL, Jadeja, Bumrah all are top players but proven to be the biggest choker generation.

His selection should worry KL rahul as he is the one who he will be replacing in case he makes his debut.

His selection has been in tests. None of the players you listed above have been chokers in tests. They have won more series both home and away than *any* other set of players worldwide.

India is a factory for producing the best batters in the world, and I wonder how they are doing it.

I always wonder this. In India and Pakistan why are almost all cricketers originally from poor/humble backgrounds? We rarely see any cricketers from Upper Class families.

That is a great story. It feels really nice when all the hard work and sacrifices of a player and his family pays off well.

Not sure he'll get a debut . More like KL's under study I guess.

Very excited to see his development. After that unfortunate episode with Pant , our Test side has not had that X factor in the batting line-up to take apart bowlers

Hopefully , Jurel can be Pant 2.0

KL, Ashwin, Bumrah, Kohli, Axar, Shreyas, Rohit are not from "poor" backgrounds I think.

Thats half the Test squad.

Definitely Rohit is from middle class In believe. Unless u r ambani, everyone is middle class in Mumbai due to cost of living. Bumrah was single child living with his working mom.
Middle class parents will not encourage their kids in sports unless they are sure that their kid will play nationals and lead some decent life.

Replaced Sarat Bharat, Dhruv Jurel has made his way to the indian side after the poor perfromance of Sarat Bharat and Kl rahul being Injured. Let's see how he perfroms as he is rated fairly high in the domestic cricket.

It always amazes me when I hear stories like Dhruv Jurel's. To come from such dirt poor backgrounds, compete with millions for what is essentially a dream and still manage to fulfill that dream. Simply incredible. Nobody works harder to get into the national team than Indian players just because of the massive odds that they are up against.

It could be for marketing reasons too. People love a feel good rags to riches story

People may call as pr stunts but players likeJaiswal,Rinku,Jurel,Washington, pandya etc have shown aspirants how to succeed even though coming from dirt poor/most adversary conditions. Its like if we put all our effort god will help u with someone's hand.everyone got the help from other's but they persisted till the end.

There is definitely lot of encouragement for youngsters coming from poor backgrounds. The people involved in the rise of these youngsters from poverty should be highlighted and rewarded.

Are you seriously saying that they made up a story about his actual life to get some clicks?
No absolutely not. There are real stories out there. No doubt about it and they deserve praise.

At times though, i have noticed players from middle class families who are able to afford basic things in life and finance their child's cricketing aspirations are incorrectly deemed as poverty stricken to captivate the interests of the causal viewers.

Finally, he is making his way out there to bat. Sent in late but time for him to show what he can do and what the hype is all about.

Dhruv Jurel: The Kargil War Veteran's 13-year-old Kid Who Took a Train Alone from Lucknow to Fulfill His India Dream

The year was 2014. A small boy in his teens stood in front of Noida’s most famous cricket coach Phool Chand’s office room, and there was no parent accompanying him.

“Before I could ask anything, the boy said, ‘Sir my name is Dhruv Jurel and please take me in your academy’, he requested,” the coach, who saw a quiet confidence in the teenager, recalled.
On Thursday, as Jurel became an Indian Test cricketer, Phool Chand vividly remembered every moment of that day. Memories came flooding back and he became emotional.

“For a teacher, can there be a bigger day than seeing his student excel. He is the first among my students who will play Test cricket and second after pacer Shivam Mavi to play international cricket,” Phool Chand, who runs his academy in Sector 71, Noida, told PTI.

Back to that day, and he recollected some more things that struck him then.

“I didn’t see any parent accompanying him. I thought may be he is a local boy from Noida but then he said, ‘Sir, I have come all alone from Agra and the friend who had promised to arrange my accommodation at his house isn’t picking up the call’.”
The first instinct for Phool Chand was to call his father, ex-Armyman Nem Chand, who was a retired Havaldar with the armed forces and fought the Kargil war in 1999. Later, he took voluntary retirement from service.
“I wanted to know if the kid had run away from home to play cricket and I asked him to give his father’s number. When his father picked up, he confirmed that he wanted to come but it was his grandfather’s tervi (shraddh) and the kid told his dad, don’t worry I will take a train from Agra to Delhi.

“Seeing a 13-year-old travel alone, I knew this boy is special,” said Phool Chand.
With no place to live initially, Phool Chand arranged for his stay in a hostel where residential trainees stayed and thus began Jurel’s cricket journey.
“In my academy, if you have merit it won’t matter if you are a rickshaw puller’s son or a minister’s son, you will be given every opportunity to make the grade. Dhruv was very hardworking from an early age and also had talent.
“So it was not difficult for him to clear each level with his performances,” the coach added.

It is never easy for boys coming from lower middle class families and for Jurel, it was his mother who pawned her gold jewellery to get him the first cricket kit. That was before he came to Noida.

In Phool Chand’s academy, any talented kid with meagre resources have never had to worry about a good bat, or quality bowling spikes.

“If I know that a boy can make the grade, I provide him with best equipments from my pocket. God has been kind that I have been able to produce multiple India, India U19 and first class cricketers.”

In the case of Jurel, what helped him develop a sound temperament, which everyone noticed in two seasons of IPL for Rajasthan Royals, is the number of matches and tournaments that he played around Delhi NCR.

“From 14 only, I made Dhruv play hundreds of matches in local tournaments around Delhi and NCR and more he played, better he got. I remember there was a tournament called Vaibhav Sharma Memorial and I had got a club for Dhruv but since he was young, they were playing him lower down the order.

“I went to the owner of the team and requested to give him one chance to bat up the order and he kept my word. Jurel made 86 off 38 balls to win the final for his club.”
He has performed at all levels from U19 state to national team, followed by Ranji Trophy, IPL, India A, and now the senior team.

The transition has been gradual and the coach is confident of his success at the highest level.

“I had messaged him early in the morning that, ‘Is din ko yaadgar banana’ (make this day memorable), and he said, ‘Main apna best dunga, sir’ (I will give my best, sir).”

Jurel misses out on a well-deserved fifty. Struck 3 sixes in his inning of 46. Good start for him.

Dhruv scored the third-highest score by a wicket-keeper on debut for India.

--------------------

Highest score in maiden Test innings as wicketkeeper (India)
101 KL Rahul vs SA Centurion 2023
59 Dilawar Hussain vs Eng Kolkata 1934
46 Dhruv Jurel vs Eng Rajkot 2024
44 Nayan Mongia vs SL Lucknow 1994

Dhruv Jurel has now struck his maiden test 50 against England in the 4th Test match of the series. looking good so far now. Built a solid partnership with Kuldep for 8th wicket to do some saving stuff for his team.

Good defensive technique and in ipl he has shown he can score pretty fast too.

Not sure how his career goes if and when pant comes back.

Good knock by Jurel under crisis. His keeping has also been good and he is obviously a far better batsman than Bharat.

What a knock this has been! He is almost single-handedly bringing India back into this match... he'll now have a maiden Test ton firmly on his mind as well as continuing to eat into this England lead.

Rahul Dravid is such a useless piece of work. Wasting time with Bharat when he had this gem right under his watch.

Zero sense of appraising talent.

We should ask who is behind the tactics of selecting bharath, patidar etc after watching their repeated failures. Whoever is the culprit has to go asap. They don't know even to recognise the talent

Dravid loves players who have toiled in domestic cricket. He does prefer newbie ipl dashers.

Hopefully we have seen ks bharat last time .Jurel will.be back up once pant is back.Ishan also can forget about test matches now.

This guy deserves all the praise for what he did in the 4th Test match till now but comparing him to Dhoni already? Not sure about it

"Next MS Dhoni In Making": Sunil Gavaskar's Sensational Praise For Dhruv Jurel

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar reserved massive praise for wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel after the youngster scored a gritty 90 in the first innings of the 4th Test against England in Ranchi. Resuming from his overnight score of 30, Jurel added another 60 in the first session on day 3, and was only a couple of big hits away from scoring his maiden Test century. However, Tom Hartley clean bowled Jurel to deny him a century in just his second Test.

Gavaskar hailed Jurel for his "presence of mind", likening the youngster to legendary India captain and wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.

"Watching the presence of mind of Dhruv Jurel makes me think he's the next MS Dhoni in the making," Gavaskar said on Sports 18 during commentary.

Gavaskar suggested that if Jurel continues to bat like he did in Ranchi, he'll score plenty of centuries going forward.

"Today he missed out on a century but make no mistake this young man will go on to score many centuries because of his presence of mind," Gavaskar said during the Lunch break.

At the stroke of lunch break, Jurel was cleaned up by Tom Hartley (3/68) after a splendid 90 off 149 balls studded with six fours and four sixes to wrap up India's first innings in 103.2 overs.

Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav (28) kept England at bay for the large part of the first session on the third day after doing so on the final session of the second day evening.

For the eighth wicket, Jurel and Kuldeep put on 76 vital runs while consuming 202 deliveries to settle the Indian nerves, after the hosts had lost a chunk of their batting line-up without any significant contributions on day 2.

Kuldeep perished when England took the second new ball and James Anderson had the batter walking back after an inside edge which rolled onto the stumps.

Once again playing a crucial knock, Kuldeep scored 28 from 131 balls with two fours.

For England, Shoaib Bashir completed his maiden five-wicket haul.

Both Pant and Jurel mentally tough and temperamentally sound men. If and Pant comes back to full fitness, both should share the keeping duties.

I think even if pant is back, team should promote jurel for 5th spot along with kl,sarfaraz .it will be the best thing for Indian cricket team as it may finally able flush out timid players like kl and incompetent players like iyer.only a mentally tough guy with grit should be there at 5.

Jhurel - what a mentally tough player. Very Aussie like in terms mental toughness. He was the difference maker in both the innings. Gill was going nowhere till Jhurel brought some impetus to the chase.

Oh common.. Gill scoring runs is due to others now.. 🙏🏻
Have u observed, when ever jaiswal plays Gill is very determined to contribute. Even manjrekar was pointing out, that getting outshined by a younger player is almost horrible pill to stomach for ego and no young star player will accept it

You can have loads of talent, but you also need grit, determination and good mentality. This guy showed all of that in both inns.

Who would have thought playing proper cricket would win you a test match hey

Once again, imagine if we had Super Commando Dhruv instead of KS Bharat batting in hyderabad.

Not going to blame Bharat. It's the useless coach Dravid with zero eye for talent.
Dravid is too conservative as a coach - just the way he was as a player. Extremely anti-McCullum in his tactics. He and Rohit are both lacking the sense to pick up aggressive players. There is no justification why they kept picking up the useless Iyer over Sarfaraz & now Bharath over Jurel.

It's not just lacking the eye for talent.

It's also fabricating fanciful tales like Bharat's keeping being several notches above the rest. Patently a lie.

If anything, Jurel looks far more athletic and aware as a pure keeper.

Happens with film stars and models. Not cricketers. Yashasvi came from a really poor background. Jurel also is from a poor background.
I will give you another clue that could be a tad controversial. However, most Indians speak good English. When you see a player not able to speak the language, it mostly means he has not been exposed to that kind of education and background.

Agreed. The run out done by Jhurel in the third test showed a winner’s mentality. Like Gavaskar said, very MSD like. Dravid should be kicked out. He has made the team a nice gentleman losers.

Man of the match in only his 2nd test
He has enough grit in the tough chases like msd.Should be considered for 5th spot even pant is back.It will be interesting how he will perform in Sena.He seems to have nice rotation strike ability and can be tried out at 5 in odis too.I don't think Kl will be in any team after 1 year with pant and Jurel as was.

High quality batsman
Should be touring Australia as it will take time for pant to fully recover and also find his form again

Future superstar in the making. Nerves of steel young man.

From UP as well, we still have Upendra Yadav and Aryan Juyal who are both miles better than KS Bharath. What a sham of a selection that was

Yeah, picking Rahul will take us nowhere in any form of the game. Sooner we get rid of him better it is.

Let's be honest, dravid is a terrible who is going to ruin Indian cricket.

Jurel is such a breath of fresh air, so different to your typical Indian superstar

I think we need a foreign coach with out any bias to build a transitional team and to get the new captian.I think pant will be the test captain and hardik will be the white ball captian.I don't think pandya can captian in all the matches in both formats.

3 innings. All 3 are matured knocks. Very bright future. It is the character that is as important as technique. He got both.

NO. Current set up is fine.

Whoever selected Mukesh, Bharat and Rajat should be fired, thats all :afridi

Now a days I see too much politics and franchise friendships(prime examples are ishan and pandya, rohit preferring sky ,dravid preference for kl etc). Andy flower type of coach is required to clean the issue.

Such a coach cannot exist in India.

If you remember the not-so-recent Kohli Vs Kumble fiasco.

The England captain responding to a question about Dhruv Jurel after India's victory over England in the 4th Test during the post-match press conference:

"I think both innings he has played very well. His keeping was also something to watch over there. I think Ben Foakes has a little crush on him there (smiles). There has been some talents in this series and Jurel is one of them. His score brought India closer to our score (in the first innings)."

"We found it tough to get anything out of the wicket at that time (during Kuldeep-Jurel stand). That was sort of the theme of the game. It was little bit easier in the morning and tougher in the evening. Even Kuldeep did a great job as well. If we could have got a lead of over 70-100, who knows the game might have been different. We might have defended it or they might have still chased 240 given how that partnership was going (Gill-Jurel's unbroken stand). We did everything we could."

Nasir Hussain in sky sports interview said an interesting story about jurel. As jurel's father was not interested to put his son in pursuit of cricket career, often jurel has to deny his name whenever it gets printed in the papers as the top scorer.i think being in constant vigilance about his father finding him out from unexpected corner brought the situation awareness and street smartness to him.

Yeah. Dhruv should learn from that shot he played. unnecessary it was. But still, he has done much better than that Sarat Bharat guy.

-----------------------------

Sunil Gavaskar speaking about Dhruv Jurel’s dismissal:

“Jurel will be very disappointed at that shot. Yes, that's what happened. To get it at the bottom of the bat. You've just come out to bat. You've batted only 24 deliveries. You can see that there is Ravindra Jadeja batting at the other end. There's a fielder there at deep. You did not have to play that shot. No wonder Jurel is looking at his bat very, very upset with himself. And he should be,”

“Always be mindful of what happened in Hyderabad. He can look as much as he wants to. Yes. The learning curve. Never take anything for granted. Not in Test cricket. It does not make any sense,”

As per reports,Dravid and Rohit were not confident about jurel's ability at international level.Agarkar have forced them to pick him. What a cringe.who can do worse than bharath. Dravid and Rohit combo is so hard to believe. Same goes for padikkal too.so patidar was never injured.

too early to judge his abilities... let him play few more games then see whether he can adjust into the playing 11 or not.

In a sense they are happy to throw the team with 2 non performers against
bazball but doesn't have courage to test a new bee who is surely a better prospect than the failed player. If that is the mindset,we never develop. I am not sure how dravid succeeded at u19 level .It must be the players credit I guess.

It's because of the the players 2022 ICC Under-19 Indian team is goat level and dravid was not the coach

Without dravid or with dravid India under 19 team always done well
Yeah but all the hoopla was that he was so good for Indian juniors and had an excellent eye for talent. Now everything is out in open and his so called judgement in shatters.I just hope.dravid will leave after t20wc and rohit after aus tour

I think KS bharat being some kind of a superman WKeeper who has no competition apart from injured Pant has been one of the dirtiest propaganda ran by Rahul Dravid in Indian cricket in a LONG while.

Sunil Gavaskar said on air as Jurel's efforts helped India counter the first-innings deficit before claiming a five-wicket win to clinch the series with a match in hand:

"Of course he has batted well, but his keeping, his work behind the stumps has been equally brilliant. Just by looking at his game awareness, I want to say that he is another MS Dhoni in the making. I know there can never be another MSD but you know the presence of mind that he has, MSD also when he started, it was that. And Jurel has that game awareness. Street-smart cricketer."

Reacting to the comparison on Friday at the local channel Conclave, Jurel thanked Gavaskar for the compliment before paying the ultimate tribute to Dhoni:

“Thank you so much Gavaskar sir for comparing me with Dhoni sir. But I want to say personally that no one can replicate what Dhoni sir has done. There is only one Dhoni. Always was and always will be. For me, I just want to be Dhruv Jurel. Whatever I do, I want to do as Dhruv Jurel, but Dhoni sir is a legend and he will always remain like that."

Dhruv Jurel recently recalled the incident when he was sledged by star England batter Joe Root during an interview on a YouTube channel:

“I couldn’t sleep that night. I was not out on 30. I was making plans for the next day, thinking whether I should try to get the half-century with the old ball, because a few overs were still left, or against the new ball. But eventually, I managed to get around 36 before they took the new ball, and Anderson returned.”

“He was all aggressive by then and was continuously sledging. Given the British accent, I didn’t understand half of those words. Even Bairstow and Joe Root joined. I was shocked because Root used to play with me in IPL, and I asked him, ‘Why are you sledging me?’ He replied, ‘We are all playing for our country now.’”

Former Australia captain tips India youngster to shine Down Under

The India Under 19 star and back-up keeper can prosper playing as a specialist batter in the upcoming Test series, according to a former Australia captain.

Former Australia skipper Tim Paine believes inexperienced wicket-keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel can make a big impact for India during the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series.

While Jurel has only played three matches and was mainly included in India's touring party for the five-match Test series in Australia as a back-up for regular keeper Rishabh Pant, the 23-year-old impressed during a recent match for India A against Australia A in Melbourne.

Jurel caught the eye of Paine when he looked composed contributing scores of 80 and 68 batting at No.6 in the low-scoring MCG contest and the former Australia captain - who coached Australia A in the match - thinks the right-hander will play as a specialist batter in the opening Test of the summer in Perth.

“I don't know if you saw much of the highlights, but after seeing him bat (against Australia A) – even though he’s a wicket-keeper, from what I’ve seen on this tour and from India’s batting in the last couple of months, I'd be staggered if he doesn't play," Paine told Australian radio station SEN on Tuesday.

“He scored one of the more polished 80s I've seen, and we were all sitting around as staff of Cricket Australia and thought, ‘Wow, this guy can seriously play’.”

Jurel made his Test debut against England in Rajkot earlier this year, claiming a catch and a stumping when deputising for Pant while also contributing 46 runs with the bat after coming in at No.8 during the comprehensive India victory.

A composed innings of 90 followed in the ensuing Test in Ranchi, with Jurel averaging an impressive 63.33 from three Test appearances against England earlier this year.

Paine knows that Jurel will face a step up in class if selected to play the crucial ICC World Test Championship clash against Australia, but thinks he is up to the challenge and will be suited by the fast conditions expected in Perth.

“He's 23 and he’s played three Test matches, but he looked a class above all of his teammates, to be fair, and handled the pace and bounce really well, which can be unusual for an Indian player,” Paine said of Jurel.

“Keep an eye out for him this summer. I think he's going to impress a lot of Australian fans.

“Even though it’s going to be another step up against the big three (Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood), he looks like he has the game to play Test cricket.”
