What's new

India's road to ICC T20 World Cup final....

At 25/4, if I have Bevan and Maxwell still to come, I will always send Bevan ahead because he is far more reliable to not get out than Maxwell.

But if I send Maxwell ahead of Bevan, I am basically flipping their roles. I am asking Maxwell to build the inning at 25/4 and keeping Bevan for hitting in final overs when required rate is already 11-12.

We needed these kinda batsmen at the 2019 CWC.

We did not deserve to win the 2019 WC. The team was such a flawed one months going into the WC and you could see how they were alw going to fail. You don't win a world cup with the likes of Kedar Jadhav, Vijay Shankar, a finished Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik in your team.

Lol, what nonsense. 2011 WC India won with basically 2.5 bowlers. 1992 WC had Malik and Ijaz who contributed nothing with bat.

Most WC teams (winning and losing) are flawed by carrying 1-2 non performing/out of form players but that isn't reason for failure. India just had a bad top order batting day and ran into an inspired new ball spell. That knocked them out of WC. Accept it instead of doing silly post hoc rationalizations.

Also, Shankar, Jadhav and DK did not cost anyone a world cup, to be fair they all did alright in the few opportunities they got and contributed well.

Shankar played 3 matches and got 58 runs. This included
15*(10) at #6 vs Pak finishing,
29 (41) at #4 vs Afg where he built a good partnership with Kohli before being out on umpires call lbw verdict
14(19) vs West Indies at #4

His much derided bowling also low-key bailed India out against Pak with good spell of 2/22 in 5 overs after Bhuvi went off injured.

Jadhav played 5 inns
0*(0) not out vs Aus
9*(8) not out vs Pak
52(63) vs Afg - topscored in a game India could have lost without his effort.
7(10) vs WI - failure
12(13) vs Eng when he came in with 71 needed off 29. Failed but did we expect any other #7 level player to succeed in such scenario? Team dropped him after this inns for

DK just played 2 inns
8(9) vs Bangla coming in at #7 got out while trying to hit big.
6(25) vs NZ. Soaked up a chunk of good new ball spell but unfortunately got dismissed.

Agreed. Even when we were beating Australia in Australia and thrashing NZ in NZ in ODIs prior to the World Cup, many of us called a semifinal exit or at best, an exit on the final .

The difference here is that unlike Champions Trophy 2017, the target here was 240, not 300+. Had Dhoni come to the crease at 25/4, he could take all his time to get his eyes in and score a 75 ball 50 and the reqd. rate would still be in control.

Or he could've gotten out early and we would've been 30/5. Not that unlikely to think that Dhoni wouldn't have survived that early spell.

Kohli is done. He is now more like a bombay actor on twitter instagram than a cricketer interested in the game.

He is out of form. Not getting runs, yet he misses practice matches.

Kohli already practicing playing under Rohit as captain. Ab Fan JattMaula

Looking at India matches so far in warm up games it seems to me Rohit is going to assume captaincy unofficially. Which can only be good for India.

At 25/4, the ball had gotten softer by then. Although on a given day, anything can happen but the chances of Dhoni surviving is higher here because an inferior batsman like Pandya was able to survive at that position and face 60 balls. This ship rescuing thing is something which Dhoni has done many times and is a master of it. Pandya hasn't done this much in his career and his reputation is of a big hitter in final overs not of an anchor.

Dhoni was perfectly suited to come at that position. 25/4 after 10 overs and he could just come in, bat as selfishly as he wants, also ease off the pressure from a relatively raw Pant with his presence and could take the score to 160/6 by 40 overs post which hitters like Pandya and Jadeja can come and just go all guns blazing.

But what happened is that Dhoni came to bat when Required Rate was already 7+ and then he scored his infamous 50 runs of 72 balls which pretty much sealed the game for New Zealand inspite of a Jadeja masterclass.

2 wickets in 2 overs for 8 runs for Ashwin

Even though its just a practice game it's been a while since Ashwin and Jadeja played together in a LoI for us.

It is a joke going on. For some overs it was Kohli, for some overs it is Rohit.
Might as well keep Dhoni on the ropes and he can shout on everyone from there.

Preparation done by Indians. Batting looks rock solid, 6th bowling option might be a concern but having 5 quality bowlers is good for Virat but most important thing is the flexibility in batting unit. Waiting for 24th. Bring it on.

Dhoni was perfectly suited to come at that position.
No he wasn't IMO. Don't think Dhoni would've survived very long and if he was gone early like in the Champions Trophy final, you didn't have anyone with experience in the later overs.

In fact, Pandya and Pant played very well at that situation. They had a partnership and set a platform for India. The idea being that if they got set, they could go on the offensive later on and not leave too much for the likes of Dhoni and Jadeja.

Virat working on his all-round skills!

You expect Virat to be seen instructing players since he is official captain but you dont expect another player openly passing on instruction unless he has been told to do so by the management.

To be fair we have seen that so many time in the past as well. Virat has been mostly a dummy captain in LOIs not so in tests where we Rohit mostly stay quite.

Imagine being considered one of the greatest cricketers and being the captain of a team like India and still failing to win a major ICC trophy as captain.

It’s his last WT20 as captain of India, and 2023 will probably be his last WC as captain of India.

He has 2 chances left. Failed in 16’,17’ and 19’.

He is captain for first time in a t20 world cup and also his last. Dhoni lost too many world cups to be honest. Eventually it's failure of all senior players not just captain.
But again the failures we are talking about is semis and finals. For most teams that's a luxury lol

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said that Team India will be a strong contender to win the ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

India will be opening their campaign against Pakistan in Dubai on October 24 before taking on New Zealand (Oct. 31), Afghanistan (November 3), Scotland (Nov. 5) and a qualifier in the Super 12s.

The Men in Blue will be fighting to win their second T20 World Cup title after 2007, which they had clinched under MS Dhoni, who is mentoring Virat Kohli's team in this edition.

"India has got so much talent so we will always be a contender. We have as much a chance of winning this World Cup as we had in the first.

"In the 2019 World Cup we lost in the semis so we have to win the big matches to win the World Cup. We are hopeful but you can't say anything, especially in T20 cricket.

There is so little time in a match but yes, India will be a contender," Sourav Ganguly said on Salaam Cricket 2021.

India are heading into the T20 World Cup as one of the favourites to win the title, which they had first clinched under MS Dhoni, who is mentoring Kohli's side in this edition.

India star Cheteshwar Pujara has backed Virat Kohli-led India to win the ongoing T20 World Cup in UAE, saying that India have a got a very balanced side and all players are ready for the ICC tournament,

Pujara said that Indian players have worked really hard to prepare for the T20 World Cup after the defeat in the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand earlier this year.

"Unfortunately we lost the ICC World Test Championship but after that, the players have worked hard and prepared for the T20 World Cup. I am very confident that all players are ready for the T20 World Cup," Cheteshwar Pujara said at Salaam Cricket 2021.

Pujara added that the slow pitches and warm weather of UAE will be favourable for the Indian side because of the presence of players like star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the side.

"The conditions in UAE are favourable for us because we have all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja. Overall we have a balanced side and we have got a very good chance to win the World Cup," Pujara added.

MS Dhoni-led India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup tournament which was held in 2007 and since then India is waiting to win their second trophy.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has announced that he will be stepping down from the T20I captaincy after the upcoming World Cup. So he will be eying on finally winning his maiden senior ICC Trophy as a captain.

With Virat Kohli deciding to relinquish T20I captaincy after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and coach Ravi Shastri’s term set to end, India are searching for that elusive trophy with which to bid farewell to an era.

Ranked No.2 on the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, only behind England, and with plenty of experience playing in UAE conditions, India are one of the favourites to claim the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 title.

They’ve dominated world cricket in all formats in the past few years, built formidable depth, and excelled at home and overseas. Yet, they haven’t won a global tournament since the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, falling in knockout games at every event.

Ahead of their first match on 24 October, we preview their tournament and look at their key players.

==

“What we've been able to create in the last five-six years is beyond titles and tournaments,” Kohli said at a pre-tournament captains’ interaction organised by the ICC.

“We've been able to create a culture which is going to last a long time, where people want to be the best they can be when they enter the Indian cricket team, the fittest they can be. That culture we've driven with utmost passion and utmost honesty, which we hope will continue to be the case in years to come.”

Few people will argue with this assessment of Kohli about the legacy built by him and coach Shastri and the team over the past few years. India, led by their charismatic captain, with more than a few once-in-a-generation players in their line-up, are a high-quality machine, driving excellence and entertaining their legion of fans. The talent coming through the ranks remains the envy of several nations.

Yet, a recently bare trophy cabinet remains their bane. While Kohli can take solace in all he’s accomplished, a trophy in his hands before he steps down from T20I captaincy next month will be especially sweet – and a strong response to critics of his time at the helm.

Aiding him and Shastri in this endeavour is an Indian leader with plenty of experience holding up trophies: MS Dhoni, the only captain to win the three major ICC trophies in his time, has been roped in as team mentor. Widely hailed as one of the sharpest minds in the game, Dhoni comes into the tournament having masterminded his team to the Indian Premier League title in October.

Kohli has been vocal in his delight at having Dhoni around. “He’s always been a mentor for all for us,” he said. Dhoni would bring “practical inputs, such intricate details about where the game is going and how we can improve by that 1 or 2% which can always make a difference”, he added.

These inputs will be valuable to a team in transition.

The batting is a mix of youth and experience, of aggressors and anchors. India’s challenge will be to identify the right mix and ensure there are those in the side who can clear the ropes from ball one.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are expected to open the batting, with Rahul given the mandate to play more expansive cricket than he tends to do at the IPL. The explosive Ishan Kishan is in the squad as back-up opener, but could also be given a role down the order. He also adds value as a back-up keeper and offers a left-hand option.

Kohli, meanwhile, has indicated he will bat at 3. On grounds where the Powerplay has been key, the role of the top three will be significant.

In line for the middle-order slots are Suryakumar Yadav, Kishan, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur.

Pandya hasn’t been bowling, so the team will have to decide whether to use him purely as a batter for his finishing abilities. Thakur, a late call-up to the squad, could play in that seam-bowling all-rounder role.

The team’s spin attack looks formidable. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returns to the side for the first time since 2017, offering variations and an ability to bowl in the Powerplay.

Veteran Jadeja, with his left-arm spin, is the team’s premier spin-bowling all-rounder, while Varun Chakravarthy is the mystery spinner.

The form of Rahul Chahar, the leg-spinner, has been of some concern. He was chosen over the in-form and more experienced Yuzvendra Chahal since he’s quicker through the air, which will be useful as the pitches get more tired.

While the excellent Jasprit Bumrah is the leader of the pace attack, there is less certainty about who will support him in the XI, with India having a plethora of talent to choose from.

There were concerns about Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s form and fitness, but the seam bowler got a vote of confidence from the captain. "His economy rates still continue to be top notch, something that he's always been known for, and his experience comes to the fore under pressure,” said Kohli at a pre-tournament interaction, pointing to Bhuvneshwar’s efforts to keep AB de Villiers quiet at the death during a recent IPL fixture.

Mohammed Shami, meanwhile, has proven himself to be a canny operator, able to move the ball both ways and be miserly in the death.

Since the 2016 T20 World Cup, no other team has played as many T20Is as India. Among the teams in the tournament, only Afghanistan, Namibia and Pakistan have a better win-loss ratio than them.

Having played all of IPL 2020 and half of IPL 2021 in the UAE, as recently as a few weeks ago, India are familiar with the conditions and will have a good idea of what conditions to expect as the tournament goes on.

The team warmed up with emphatic wins against Australia and England. Now it’s about executing their plans on the day.

Tournament history

Best finish: Winners, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007

India won the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Johannesburg in 2007, igniting a frenzy for the format back home. Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, a young team defended 157/5 for a five-run win in a thrilling final. The unusual call of bowling with Joginder Sharma – who never played for India again – paid off as Misbah Ul Haq was was caught at fine-leg on the penultimate ball.

In 2009, 2010 and 2012, they couldn’t make it past the Super 8s. In 2014, they were runners-up to Sri Lanka. In the previous edition in 2016, which was a home World Cup, they were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual champions West Indies.

Look out for
Ravichandran Ashwin: The off-spinner hasn’t featured in white-ball cricket for India since July 2017. But a bagful of variations and what his skipper described as the “courage” to bowl at difficult points in the game, including in the Powerplay and the death, sees Ashwin back in contention. The grounds in the UAE, where pitches take spin and boundary sizes are large – or larger on one side – could make the inclusion of an off-spinner a tactical call. He can be especially effective against left-handers.

“His variations now, and the control over pace, is something which [gives us] a lot of experience,” said Kohli. “A guy who has played so much international cricket and now when's at his confident best, these guys can go in there and change the game.”

Key player

Jasprit Bumrah: He has pace, but he can as easily take it off. He can get movement with the new ball, send down bouncers in the middle or hit pinpoint yorkers at the death to get wickets at any point in the innings. On the rare occasions that batters choose to attack him, he can adjust his plans to outthink them. Jasprit Bumrah, he of the unique action, is a captain’s dream in T20 cricket, and a batter’s nightmare. An automatic selection in the XI, India will build their pace attack around him.

Big match

v Pakistan – Matches between traditional rivals India and Pakistan are emotional affairs, their reach and consequences extending beyond the playing field. The players, however, insist they approach it as just another game. India have a 100% record against Pakistan in World Cups, but lost the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy to them. However, in this format, the No.3 ranked T20I team are a bit of an unknown for India. Mini-battles, such as between Rohit and Shaheen Shah Afridi and Bumrah and Babar Azam will be keenly watched.

Another loss vs the kiwis (which usually happens in ICC tournaments) and it's sayonara for India.

Pakistan is bound to drop one against the lesser 3. As in NZ. This group stage was tailor made for India to advance regardless of the outcome of todays game.

If bangladesh hadn't lost to scotland, they would be in this group and would most likely beat out NZ, ensuring Ind/Pak move on to semis for ICC to further milk that sweet sweet broadcast money.

It could also backfire.
The players get tired and exhausted (physically and mentally) which leads to loss of appetite, and spark.

I may very well be wrong, but I have a feeling that India will lose at least one, if not two, from their first three games.

Still sticking to my guns.
And definitely no spark seen in the India team today, no appetite for victory either.

Thanks that our players weren't playing IPL this close to the tournament.

The heat in UAE drains you out quickly.

There was a return of pro active Kohli the batter today after a year or so in my opinion. He was moving quicker than he has in some time. Although I do think he took a bit easy in the last 5 overs and was probably content with just getting 150. The lack of a helping hand in batting was quite notable today and the punt of sending Jadeja ahead of Pandya didn't come off. For India, they pretty much need one of their openers to bat long.

Bold prediction - India will win this T20 world cup

Our backs are in the wall and its the nature of this team to fight back when we are cornered. Winning in Australia after 36 all out, winning in England after test championship final etc. are few examples.

I understand the sadness and doom n gloom among Indian fans here as this defeat hurts. But a 10 wicket defeat against Pakistan is the lowest of the low. Good thing is its just the tournament opener. This defeat will only rejuvinate the team and they would come back strongly.

I just hope and pray we somehow meet Pakistan in the finals again. Winning the trophy by beating them would be even sweeter.

So yes here is my bold prediction India will go on to win the T20 world cup 2021.

Bold statement? India are still the bookies favorite. What will be your next bold statement? PSG to win Ligue 1?

I absolutely think they can still win.

They are still one of the best 3 sides of the tournament.

India can win, I agree. Game against NZL will be the important one. I can't see Afghanistan, Scotland or Namibia beating India. Afghans can push though.

So its basically beat NZL and there is a realistic chance. If India lose to NZL then it's Game Over.

What a rubbish schedule by the way, why do we have to wait for 1 week before the next game? Rubbish

Well usually India play very well in the group stages and choke come the knockout.

A hammering in the very first group game can only mean one thing - either India gets knocked out within the group stages or gets inspired to win the tournament. The NZ game will get us close to the answer.

Of course they can and I still expect them in the final.

One loss is not the end. On paper they are still the team with the best chance.

No chance. India won’t make it to the SF.

The fact you guys are still picking Bhuvi for a WT20 in 2021 says it all. I can’t lie, when I saw Kohli practice his bowling during the innings break, I was more worried about him than the likes of Bhuvi and Shami.

India were essentially playing with 2 bowlers and a part timer.

Kohli is finished, his innings yesterday at the back end of the innings wasn’t good. Knowing you’ve still got Pandya to come in he could’ve taken a lot more risks.

Bowling Bhuvi with the new ball and not Bumrah…lol?

Playing 2 spinners in UAE.

Playing Pandya as a batsman only.

Dropping Ishan Kishan.

I’ve never seen so many mistakes being made in one game.

Kohli cannot take his team into the SF.

In UAE, it’s the bowlers that win you games, not the batsmen. And, India’s bowling attack is on par with Zimbabwe’s.

A part from Bumrah, not one bowler in the Indian WT20 squad gets into the Pakistan xi

India can and most likely will go on to win. That makes yesterdays win even more special. India is the best team in the tournament.

You predicted it correctly before the Ind-Pak game. Well done..

However, Kohli didn't mention anything about fatigue in the post-game press. He said it was about pacing the innnings properly.

It looks like it will be India's road to Mumbai airport unless Afghanistan can beat NZ.

Despite a huge total of 210, India only won by 66 runs due to their minnow level bowling attack. This means Afg net run rate is still leaps and bounds ahead of India. So even if Afg by some fluke beat NZ, they might still be ahead of India in the net run rate.

india will wave an IPL contract at Scots and Namibia

So it means all what India needs is Afghanistan's victory over New Zealand.

It will be interesting to see what type of picth is prepared for that match.

Everything which can be premeditated / controlled will go in India's favor. Pitches, DRS, marginal decisions...

Unfortunately, money is a very powerful motivator...

You will see Afghans jumping around and playing as if their lives depend on it...

I mean a lot of money is on the line!

India is still hanging in by the slimmest, but the last few days have been mighty entertaining. The panic in some people is :)))

Was watching a post-match Pakistani show after the Ind-Scotland game, because.... that's what you do :afridi

So Rashid Latif was on and he said, he's been bombarded with messages with people scared :) (ghabrahat was what he used) , but he was like - there's no way, NZ is losing to Afg.

Wish some of the people who've been on fire, had the same confidence as him.

India stayed alive at the T20 World Cup with a quickfire eight-wicket rout of Scotland on Friday as star spinner Ravindra Jadeja claimed: "If we play like this, nobody can beat us."

KL Rahul smashed 50 off 19 balls as India raced to a target of 86 in 6.3 overs to drastically improve their run-rate in the Super 12 contest in Dubai and keep their semi-final push on track.

Jadeja and Mohammed Shami took three wickets each to set up the crushing win after they bundled out Scotland for 85 in 17.4 overs following the team's decision to bowl first.

"If we play like this, nobody can beat us. In T20s we have to play like this," Jadeja said after being named man of the match for his figures of 3-15 from four overs.

"We just look to play a good brand of cricket. We were just looking to play our best game."

Virat Kohli's India have bounced back from their opening two losses to Pakistan and New Zealand to hammer Afghanistan and Scotland.

However, they still need to win their last group game against Namibia on Monday and depend on the result of Sunday's New Zealand-Afghanistan match to have a chance of making the semi-finals.

"We can't judge ourselves on the basis of two bad matches," said Jadeja.

"We will now try to play the same brand of cricket that you saw in the last game and this one. There was no panic in the dressing room."

- Dew factor -

India's pace bowlers including Jasprit Bumrah and Shami removed the Scotland openers and Jadeja soon combined to rattle the opposition batting.

The Indian bowling looked different from the one that allowed Pakistan to win by 10 wickets and New Zealand by eight wickets and Jadeja had an explanation.

"The ball stops and grips the surface in the first innings. In the second innings the dew comes in and the wicket becomes flat and becomes easy for the batsman," said Jadeja.

"We don't get a start when we bat first. And middle overs also get tough because wickets keep falling in T20 cricket. That's why winning the toss and putting the opposition in becomes important."

On the consequences of New Zealand beating Afghanistan on Sunday, a smiling Jadeja was quick to say we will "pack our backs and go home".

New Zealand stayed on course for the semi-finals with a 52-run win over Namibia earlier in the day.

Group 2 leaders Pakistan have already made sure of a semi-final place with four wins in four games.

New Zealand's Jimmy Neesham, who made a brisk 35 on Friday as he and Glenn Phillips plundered 67 runs off the last four overs against Namibia, brushed aside talk of India's focus on their final group match.

"We are pretty good as a unit at sort of keeping what's necessary to concentrate on in the front of our minds," said Neesham after being named man of the match for his allround show in Sharjah.

"There's been a few occasions I know the last couple of months where there's been a lot of people talking a lot about us off the field so it doesn't bother us too much."

When your in form and have self believe, you dont need to worry about a team who is depending on other teams winning to go even through.

Pak just need to focus on the next game and not look too far ahead.

Pakistan team looks focused and humble. Its only some narrow minded people who have a lot of time on their hands. Looking for forward to our semifinal vs Aus/SF.

England vs Pakistan final will be gold. If somehow india qualifies and reaches final, it will be one hell of a final. Exciting times ahead!!
