India's road to the final of the 2023 World Cup

India's pathetic last minute rotation in 2019 world cup made sure Indian MO was severely undercooked. MO weakness was the only reason India lost a lot of winnable games. After Yuvraj/Dhoni/Raina combo India lost that match winning middle order for a long period. They could bail India out even after collapses up the order. This is where India will miss Pant. Big game guy. Pant/jadeja/Iyer/Pandya would have formed a crunch game MO unit. Now we will have KL Rahul mother of all mental midgets in the MO which once again puts India at a disadvantage.

Following their win over the Kiwis, former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman (PCB) Ramiz Raja has made a major claim about India's bowling attack.

Ramiz suggested that India have designed their bowling line-up after referring to the blueprint followed by the Pakistan team. To back his claim, he pointed out the similarities between the pace attacks of both countries.

"I often feel India took a look at Pakistan and designed their bowling attack the same way. Umran Malik has pace just like Haris Rauf. Similarly, Arshdeep brings the left-arm angle like Shaheen Afridi. Wasim Jr. chips in during the middle-overs and so does Hardik Pandya, both have the same pace as well. Shivam Mavi also plays the role of a supporting bowler," Ramiz said on his YouTube channel.

Ramiz added that beating India in their own backyard is a "big challenge".

"India's spin department is a bit better than Pakistan. I always look at what Pakistan need to improve whenever I see both sides playing. But, I think India's bowling is looking ordinary. New Zealand just panicked. Beating India in India is a big challenge," he added.

Dunno if it’s a formula . Teams try to have variety. Bumrah is leader of the pack and siraj is now the leader . Pakistan has no bowler matching these two . Shaheen is the only bowler who is superb . But india also has kuldeep and Washington sundar - one is ripping the ball, other is bowling from big height and genuine all rounder . Add pandya who is a complete bowker besides Shami and it’s a v v good lineup

India does not have a good legspin allrounder like shadab . But to say india is copying pakistan is unclear in what manner

Head coach Rahul Dravid discussed India’s plans for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, while also detailing Suryakumar Yadav’s ODI game, and how India would look to overcome Mitchell Starc.

The current ODI series against Australia is tied at 1-1, with the final ODI all set to be played at Chennai. India won the first game in Mumbai by five wickets, while they were beaten soundly in the second game at Vishakhapatnam by 10 wickets.

This series will be India’s last engagement at home over the next few months. The side will not get many other opportunities to play home ODIs before the World Cup, also to be played in India.

Dravid discussed how the team was looking to keep in shape for the global event in October-November 2023 with the ICC World Test Championship final, Asia Cup and other matches ahead of it.

He added that India’s had the opportunity to build the side they wanted over the last few months.

"Probably, we’ll not get many more games in our conditions. But we’ve had the opportunity over the last few months to play in these conditions, which is great. I think to a large extent we are pretty clear as to the squad, and the players we want.

"We’ve narrowed it down to 17-18 players, we have a few guys who are recovering from injuries and might come into the mix, depending on the time frame of their recoveries and how long it takes for them to come back.

"All in all, I think we are pretty much in a good space. We’re pretty clear about the kind of team we want to play in. And, hopefully we can give these guys who we’ve zeroed in on, as many playing opportunities as we can. If it’s in India, it's great, but even if it's not in India, we just want to give as many opportunities as we can to build our side.

"Within our team of 16 players, there will be a couple of different combinations to try and see, because it’s a big tournament, it’s a long tournament in India. We’re playing in nine different cities, nine different conditions, so you just want to have flexibility in your squad as well, to be able to play sometimes four fast bowlers, sometimes play three spinners.

"Within the squad, we’d want to look at different options. So as to ensure that we’ve covered all bases for all conditions.”

Discussing Suryakumar Yadav’s poor run in the ongoing series, the India coach believed that the Mumbai batter needed to be given a run so as to build his ODI game.

"Not really concerned about Surya in a couple of games. He got two first-ballers, which were two pretty good balls ,” Dravid went on to discuss how the batter was still new to the 50-over game.

"I think we need to be a little bit more understanding as well. One of the things about Surya is that he’s also learning the 50-over game a little bit.

"T20 is slightly different. Even though he hadn’t played for India for a really long time (since his T20 debut), he had played almost 10 years in the IPL. A lot of IPL cricket, which is a tournament almost like international cricket. He played a lot of high-pressure T20 games.

"In ODIs, there’s no equivalent tournament in domestic cricket. You have to play the Vijay Hazare and all that. So, even though he’s played a lot of T20 cricket, his one day cricket, he hasn’t played a lot of it (internationally). So we just need to give some time and be patient with him.

"We certainly see the upside of him doing well, which can be really good for the side.”

India’s top-order has struggled in the first two ODIs, with Australia’s left-arm seamer Starc troubling them with the new ball on both occasions. Starc finished with 3/49 and 5/53 in the two games.

Dravid backed India's top-order while discussing their recent issues against Starc, and emphasized on playing out a good spell from the fast bowler in order to succeed in the game.

"I think we’ve actually done really well as a batting unit over the last year or so, especially in white-ball cricket, even in the six-seven games before that, we put up some really big scores in one-day cricket.

"So not too much of a concern, I think at odd times, these things can happen. I think Mitchell Starc has bowled really well, so credit to him as well for the way he’s bowled with the new ball. (For India) You just need to find a way through that spell and bat, don’t lose too many wickets upfront. I think we should be fine."

Former captain Sourav Ganguly called for India to play "aggressively" if they are to break their 10-year drought in winning international titles.

India haven't won international silverware since the 2013 Champions Trophy, crashing out of the last two Twenty20 World Cups.

But later this year they will be a strong favourite to win the 50-over World Cup on home soil. They will also face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final at the Oval in June.

"India have to play aggressively, especially in T20s. They have the team to do that," Ganguly told the Times of India newspaper in an interview published Tuesday.

"Indian cricket will always have talent and a big pool. It's the ones who are more hungry go to the next level. It's about how you prepare for the big tournaments," he said.

Ganguly, however, declined to criticise India's all-format captain Rohit Sharma or coach Rahul Dravid, saying they are "very balanced people and will do what's best for Indian cricket".

But the former Indian cricket board chief hinted that he believed Hardik Pandya could be a future permanent India captain.

The all-rounder led Gujarat Titans to victory in the Indian Premier League in their debut season last year.

He has also been stand-in India captain several times in the absence of Rohit.

"IPL is a good breeding ground. We have seen how well Hardik Pandya has captained in the IPL. That's one of the reasons why he has been captaining India in the shorter formats also," he said.

"You can't ignore wins and losses in the IPL because it's a very tough tournament."

Ganguly, who is widely regarded as one of the sport's greatest captains, urged Pandya to return to Test cricket, calling him an "asset" in the five-day game as well.

Pandya, a pace bowler and an attacking batsman, last played a Test in 2018 before a back injury forced him out. He returned to white-ball cricket last year.

Expect us to win 8 off the 9 games and finish on top. If Australia and England perform to their levels , they'll finish 2 and 3 in no order and then India can have a good chance of beating whoever turns up at the Wankhede.

But if Aus/Eng slip up somewhere and finish 4th, then it's game over for us.

If we play this team, we will be run away champions:

Jaiswal
Rohit (c)
Gill
Kohli
KL (wk)
Pandya (vc)
Jadeja
Chahal
Shami
Bumrah
Siraj

Shreyas Iyer should be there somewhere in that middle order. ODIs in subcontinent is where his abilities could be of the highest use for us.

And I'd have Kuldeep over Chahal anyday of the week.

Don’t see india winning they will be under pressure and rohit has failed as captain under such pressure

The home crowd will be on their side - makes a huge difference.

Tough start with Australia and Pakistan amongst their first 3 games.

Pressure as hosts also - I don't think this will be easy for India.

Australia are still outright favourites for me. Pakistan are 2nd favourites assuming they select Usama Mir and Ihsanullah and someone like Saim Ayub in the batting perhaps.

England are not favourites this time around but Buttler would have assembled a solid if not exceptional team and they will be # 3 . It's between India and NZ for the fourth spot for now. Best case scenario for India - they can beat England and NZ (both are historically weak in Indian conditions in ODI's) and meet either OZ or PAK in the final which we will lose. Worst case scenario - OZ,NZ, PAK, ENG qualify for semis with India losing to all of them.

Agree. This could end like 2007 WC for India.

Agree. Chahal is a nothing cricketer, a total failure in all aspects of the game.

We'll overachieve to make the Semis. Kane and Bracewell being out is massive.

Makes it a lock the SFs will be Aus, England, India and Pakistan.

I expect the first XI to be something like this. It's a decent side but that bowling attack in particular does not inspire confidence on flat Indian wickets and especially the lack of quality spin is very obvious. But then again, NZ usually surprise everyone. Their batting actually is a lot better than I initially thought.

Bracewell was the x-factor player who could have gotten us a game or two. Without him and Kane I don't have high hopes.

Its such a shame that Bracewell is out of WC. Was looking forward to see him on Indian soil; especially after THAT knock he played against us.

On paper you'd expect it to be an India v Australia final.

England and Pakistan if they get it together could challenge too.

New Zealand look strong, but in India their bowlers might not be as effective.

Every technology can be used (DRS can be changed) to make sure Hosts wins 2023 world cup. ........
Syed Ajmal to Tendulkar ,big shout for Lbw and given. ...Tendulkar takes review, but it looks clear out, could be a wastage of review. (Commentators discussing. ....Yes surely it is going to be out...)
Ooohh would u believe it the ball is missing the stumps and Sachin survives. ........

It's been 12 years and Pakistanis are still moaning about an overturned DRS lol.

According to reports on Friday, sources reveal that India is scheduled to participate in a three-match series against Australia just before the ICC Cricket World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considers this bilateral series as a crucial part of their World Cup preparations. Although the specific dates and venues have not been announced yet, the matches are expected to take place between September 20 and 27.

The first One Day International (ODI) is likely to be held on September 20, followed by matches on September 23 and September 26. It's worth noting that these matches will be played at venues that are not hosting World Cup matches.

I think England is the only team that can stop India from winning the World Cup.

England has batting firepower, experience, good leadership, a varied bowling line-up.

Manipulation of DRS is a decade old technology. This Indian team now has more technology with Google and Microsoft CEOs being Indian. I heard there's something called Cloud computer technology. With that they can use computers and get clouds during Indian bowling and make the conditions overcast. Add to that BCCIs clout to just pay opposition players cash upfront and even during gameplay with something called UPI. Apparently it's instant cash. And not to forget the biggy - IPL contracts. They can also what they did in that ind vs Pak game. Just run oil on Pak's players hands and get them all slippery during catching

Low pressure encounters those were. India have been mental midgets battingwise in ICC tournaments for a decade now and despite the Asia Cup win, I don't expect that to change. Gill is the only shining light in this lineup.

Wasim Akram speaking on TV:

“There are different venues and traveling in India… it takes a day (between every match). You need to preserve energy before the World Cup. I don't know why they are playing three ODIs. It is probably done a long time ago, but it was a bit unnecessary. You don't want to be tired before a mega-tournament where you are favourites at home. If you want some more players in the squad, you can play those in the three ODIs against Australia,” Akram said on Star Sports following India's win in the Asia Cup final.

Cloud computing for dummies ..who think drs can be manipulated in a split second

Vaughan didn't say anything wrong. Time to swallow pride and learn something from England. They don't have the richest cricket league in the world still they are winning trophies.

England revamped their LOI teams competely. They pick players who are suitable for a particular format. They don't try to force a player in the format. On the other hand non performers like Pant are still in the team. The only player who can match these English players in T20s is Sky. Rest of them are duds. :inti
If having richest league in world means trophies are guranteed... how come England which as EPL failed to win soccer world cup since 1960s. According to your logic England should win soccer world cup more frequently....naaaaah?

Congrats India! Can we play the 2027 world cup now with 14 teams and WI in it instead please!

2011 won by the host
2015 won by the host
2019 won by the host
2023 will be won by the host

Never mind if we lost this time. We will win next time.
It didn't happen once before the 2011 and now it has happened 3 consecutive times. It won't be a surprise if we see this happening for the 4th time as India do have a great squad and they have just won the Asia Cup convincingly. They must be super confidence going into this World Cup but this is a big tournament so whatever team is going to win this World Cup, it has to perform on consistent basis.

Time to refill that prescription bro.

One thing is for sure that India will make it to the final of this world cup because of their exceptional batting strength, their bench players are also performing so well which will boost the confidence of the skipper.

Well india tends to underperform in knockout matches and it has been consistently happened that when they are labeled as favorites they often end up losing.

Let's see how far they will go this time!

India will be in the semis for sure. They have a really strong team and should easily qualify.. They are faves for all league games except Eng or Aus which are 50-50. They should easily beat Pak as I think they have all bases covered but hope it's a close exciting game. But knockouts are a different ball game. Not sure on the knock out games as SENA teams raise their game whereas India becomes defensive. Will be a good WC for sure

One of the reason team like Australia also pulled off magical moments in crisis is their fielding. In the semi final MSD put down a simple chance of Taylor. He was barely 10 or something. His knock eventually gave them a defendable total. Indian fielding is borderline embarrassing. I can't even count how many bad fielders are there in this side. Worse than 2011 squad. Atleast guys like Yuvraj, Sehwag, Tendulkar, Gambhir were relatively safe.

Dhoni was the biggest culprit in the 2019 WC loss to NZ - missed Kane's runout on 26 ( eventually 67), dropped Taylor on 2 ( eventually 74), tuk tuked till no tomorrow which led to Jadejas dismissal. He should have been dropped after 2015 because SC cricketers never want to retire. Even the 2015 WC semi - he just gave up and tuk tuked - gave Misbah's 2007 WC semi vibes..

I hope this is sarcastic and you dont really mean it ! Cloud seeding to get clouds sci fi stuff - dont know what to even say LOL. Also regarding 2007 Tendulkar's LBW of Ajmal - dont know if you know that Pak dropped 5-6 catches of him! Yes 5-6 dropped catches - a few before the DRS and a few after the DRS as well before Afridi finally took a catch of him. Javed Miandad was not given a plumb LBW in the 92 final when he was 20 or so by Steve Bucknor and later Botham was not given out off Akram when he didnt nick it. But Eng missed a catch of Miandad not too later after that LBE appeal. So they cant complain and blame it all on Bucknor when they had the chamce to dismiss Miandad a bit later by taking the catch

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya believes the pressure of playing on home soil can prove a positive and the strong cheering and vocal support of a loyal Indian crowd can lift his side to glory during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

Pandya was heard speaking alongside respected commentator Harsha Bhogle and host Brian Murgatroyd on the latest episode of The ICC Review podcast and the India star discussed the expectations his side will face during the World Cup.

India are currently ranked No.1 on the MRF Tyres Men's ODI Team Rankings and will have more than one billion fans cheering for them during the home World Cup.

Pandya wants his team to use that parochial home support to their advantage and help it inspire them to a third World Cup title.

"It is exciting with a lot of expectations, but at the same time we are going to get a lot of love and support and cheers which is going to get the best out of us," Pandya noted.

"We have got some world class batters and world class bowlers. We just need to come together, play fearless, take the pressure and expectation to our advantage and continue what we have done.

"We have been No.1 (ranked side) for quite some time in recent years and it means definitely we have done really well and we just need to turn that moment into World Cups and we are confident this year we will be able to."

Pandya was part of the India team that was bundled out of the 2019 World Cup in the semi-final stage by New Zealand in the early stages of his ODI career and the 29-year-old now feels more experienced and better placed to lead his side to glory.

"I have always wanted to do a lot of good things in my life, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would reach here," Pandya noted.

"It has been a blessing and a lot of good deeds done by my parents to get what I have and credit to them to see that and make sure I played the sport but at the same time I supported.

"It was a dream to play for the country and I am living the dream."

Jadeja sees no weakness in strong India World Cup team

India spinner Ravindra Jadeja believes his side has no apparent weakness and are well placed to go on and win the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Jadeja played a starring role in India's first-up victory over Australia in Chennai on Sunday, with the left-armer collecting the prized scalp of Steve Smith to finish up with impressive figures of 3/28 from 10 overs.

It was a superb all-round performance from India and Jadeja feels his side is well placed for a strong tilt at winning a third World Cup title.

"It is very special because this is my first World Cup in India," Jadeja said on latest episode of The ICC Review podcast alongside Dinesh Karthik and host Brian Murgatroyd.

"The fans are very excited because our team is balanced in all areas.

"There is nothing that we are weak in any particular area."

More than 30,000 fans turned out at MA Chidarmbaram Stadium for India's World Cup opener and crowds are expected to be even bigger when the hosts continue their campaign across the nation for the remainder of the tournament.

Jadeja gave special praise to the loyal Indian fans and believes they have a major role to play in India's World Cup tilt.

"The energy of Indian fans, their confidence, and their unwavering faith in us are incredibly high," Jadeja noted.

"Whenever we play in India, for any series, they turn out in such large numbers that the entire stadium remains packed.

"I find it very exciting to play in the World Cup in front of the Indian crowd.

"Hopefully, we'll perform well, reach the finals, and win the World Cup."

I think England is the only team that can stop India from winning the World Cup.

England has batting firepower, experience, good leadership, a varied bowling line-up.

In Bharat, we don’t feel intimidated by England team.

South Africa can absolutely be our toughest challenge.

If having richest league in world means trophies are guranteed... how come England which as EPL failed to win soccer world cup since 1960s. According to your logic England should win soccer world cup more frequently....naaaaah?
This question is so boring and I have already replied to it dozen times here. Use the search functionality and for a start just answer this simple question. How many countries play football? How many football leagues are there? What's the probability of a team winning a cup in football? Next time think before you reply to my post. :inti

So far, it has been a wonderful journey for team India in this World Cup. 3 wins in 3 matches and they have an excellent net run-rate. They will surely be a hard team to beat in this tournament.

India winning this World Cup at a canter no stopping them at home befitting end to the greatest batsmen ever Kohli and the goat bumrah who will lead them there

We have to peak at the right time.

I hope we make the semis by losing a game maybe. It should serve as a reality check

Indian road to Semis is pretty straight forward now. Win all games against minnows. With our Good NRR we should be in semis as long as we don't lose big against NZ/SA/ENG

Ponting lauds laid-back Rohit as leader of 'team to beat'

Rohit Sharma is the ideal captain for India as they chase the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 trophy on home soil, according to three-time winner Ricky Ponting.

India have made a bright start to their Cricket World Cup campaign with emphatic triumphs over Australia, Afghanistan and arch-rivals Pakistan.

The three victories have propelled India to the top of the standings and brushed aside concerns over how the hosts would deal with the extra pressure that comes with playing in front of fervent fans.

Two-time World Cup winning captain Ricky Ponting has pointed to skipper Rohit Sharma as the key to India rising to the occasion even while surrounded by passionate home support.

"He's very laid back, Rohit. Very laid back with everything he does,” Ponting told the ICC while sharing his smart perspectives powered by DP World.

"You can even see that by the way that he plays. He's a pretty laconic sort of batsman as well, and that's the way he is both on and off the field.

"We can't sit back and say that the pressure won't get to them at some stage, or it won't affect them, because it will, just with the enormity of the tournament.

"But he'll take it and cope with it as well as probably anyone.”

Rohit has captained India in ODIs since taking the reins from Virat Kohli in both white-ball formats since December 2021.

Ponting believes the current skipper is the ideal leader as India plays the showpiece event on home soil, while allowing Kohli to focus on his starring role with the bat.

"Someone like Virat, who is a bit more heart-on-the-sleeve, and probably listens to the fans and plays up with the fans a little bit more, someone with his personality would probably find it a bit harder,” Ponting said.

"But I think Rohit will be fine with it. He's a terrific bloke and has been a great player for a long time, and he's done a great job as leader of India.”

India last won the Cricket World Cup when the tournament was held across three countries including their own in 2011.

While India were able to turn to their home support to win that final against fellow hosts Sri Lanka when it was held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, they are still searching for a third Cricket World Cup title.

Former Australia great Ponting thinks the trophy is all but there for India's taking this time around.

"I said from the start that I think they're going to be the team to beat. They've got a very talented team,” Ponting said.

"They've got all bases covered with their fast bowling, their spin and their top-order, middle-order batting.

"They're going to be extremely hard to beat. But we'll see how they hold up under extreme pressure as well.”

However same thing was the case in the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2022 tournaments and we can clearly see the results.
