Genghis Khan

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6325494573730581068&hl=en

Brutal tyrant or man of vision? Always strike first and always take revenge. Genghis Khan learnt these lessons the hard way during a violent childhood. Son of a murdered father, Genghis grew up in the unforgiving environment of the Mongolian Steppe. But how did an outcast, raised in poverty, come to be the great Khan? Combining live-action footage shot in Mongolia with CGI software used in Lord of the Rings, the recreation of battle scenes is taken to a new level in presenting the story of how Genghis conquered an empire greater than the Roman Empire at its peak

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (First President of the Republic of Turkey: 1923-1938)

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6199483909852762253&hl=en

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is one of the most important statesmen of the twentieth century. He was an outstanding military officer of the Ottoman Empire, he became the leader of a national war of independence and then the builder of a war-torn country into a new, modern state. He drew a path for national independence for nations under foreign encroachment. He aimed at his country's attaining the standards of contemporary civilization, which he idealized as a true progress for humanity. His conviction in this secular ideal for human progress guided his deeds and his doings in the making of the modern Turkish nation. His biography is thus written and read along with the history of the emergence of the Republic of Turkey.

Must See Documentaries

I would HIGHLY recommend the following two documentaries especially the first one.

1. India: Final Solution

This documentary is a very detailed account of the events that took place in Gujarat, India leading the the massacre of thousands of innocent Muslims. This documentary shows BJP leaders inciting their followers by telling them to abandon the philosophies of Gandhi so that Muslims can be removed from Bharat. It is a disturbing depiction of the politics of hate. It is very balanced by the way as it interview several Hindus who sheltered Muslims escaping the rioters.

http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=3829364588351777769#

2. No End In Sight

No End in Sight is a documentary film that focuses on the two year period following the American invasion of Iraq in March 2003. The film asserts that serious mistakes made by the administration of President George W. Bush during that time were the cause of ensuing problems in Iraq, such as the rise of the insurgency, a lack of security and basic utilities for many Iraqis, sectarian violence and, at one point, the risk of complete civil war.

http://www.movies-links.tv/movies/no_end_in_sight/

These are two of my favorite documentaries and are real eye openers for all of us here. It gives substance to many of the arguments we make.

I want to watch the first one but I'm afraid it will be too disturbing. I don't normally have a weak stomach but the Gujarat massacre was so horrible that even reading about it makes me really upset.

i am just amazed to see that the bjp supporters (hinduvta followers) love muslims and pakistan so much that they can not think about any thing other than muslims and pakistan and how to destory them.

only if they would have used their energies else where they could have done something productive for india.

The Final Solution was brilliantly made. I watched it a couple of years ago. It's very difficult to watch though. You might shed a tear or two.

I'm going to check out No End In Sight soon. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for posting this. I always get to see one side of things though I try to get more than one view point on these things..I will def. check this out..
Modi is a strict disciplinarian and supposedly has the best run govt in India...but this might reveal his evil side...

He does have a good government. I do appreciate the fact that he turned a stagnant Gujarat economy into one that grew faster than any other state by the end of his tenure at 10%. And he's provided a good role model for development.

But the BJP in general has marginalized the Muslim population. You can hear it from the mouths of the average resident in Gujarat that if the BJP wins, the Hindus win and if Congress wins, the Muslims win.

In a country promoting secularism, religious divide shouldn't exist in this form.

Two other documentaries I have recently watched are:

1. Food Inc.

2. Capitalism: A Love Story

They are both very good and are eye openers. Worth watching for sure.

Watching that has made my blood boil !!
What's worse is, the report into the Godhra fire speculated that it may have been started accidently from within the train carriage.
I'm surprised that the Gujerat muslims haven't taken up arms and avenged what has happened to them.
If Hindus had killed any of my family, I'd make sure they got the same back, with interest.
Modi should be Hanged !!!

it further highlights the fact the creation of Pakistan is a veiled apartheid. Muslims in Gujurat weren't protected at all, we had the Babri Masjid demolition, and more recently the Kashmir situation is worsening and Pakistan is doing what Egypt did with Gaza.

absolutely disgusting, disgusting stuff. This only shows what a religion/theology/hatred can bring from inside.

No End in Sight was pretty good, but all common knowledge.

I just watched 'A Crude Awakening - the Oil Crash'. It's really well made. We know that oil is going to run out soon. But it puts things into perspective. And funnily enough, I didn't know that my professor is in the documentary. I found that amusing.

I'm going to check out Capitalism: A Love Story next.

Is 'the Arrivals' yet another freemason conspiracy yada yada?

You do realize that it was the spirit of revenge that drove those Hindu extremists to commit such despicable, inhumane acts, right? Those fools decided that killing innocent Muslims was the appropriate response to the deaths of those 59 Hindu women and children killed in the train fire. Justice has to be served to those responsible for inciting and abetting the riots, but seeking revenge isn't going to solve anything. We've got to find a way to get out of this cycle of violence.

Agreed.

But when you have ruling politicians in Gujarat preaching to the masses to reject Gandhi and make sure that Hindus are protected, its very hard for the minority Muslim community to defend itself.

They cant take up arms because that would be wrong apparently, nor can they defend themselves economically or politically because they are in small numbers and hence not in the government.

So how do you expect Muslims in Gujarat to fight for their rights? The only solution they have is to leave and go to another state, maybe Maharashtra?

Yeah but when Indian Muslims openly proclaim their love for India and say that they would never want to be Pakistani, then there isnt much we can do is there?

If you have met your fair share of Indian Muslims, you will see that a large majority of them would rather be Indian than Pakistani if given the choice, so why should we have sympathy on those who dont want to be with us?

Is that UMER SHARIF in disguise in the firs documentary after 1:50:00 ?

So was Adolf Hitler - "a strict disciplinarian and supposedly had the best run govt around". He was also a mass-murdering personification of evil.

Same goes for Narendra Modi, albeit on a far smaller scale. Still, he has time on his hands, and I am sure aspirations to achieve a lot more on the "Muslim-massacre" front.

Its shocking that sensible and decent people would choose to defend the evil that is Modi and the BJP with mealy-mouthed platitudes like "But oh, look at all the trains running on time now!".

A bit like defending Hitler or Pol Pot or Mao. Shocking and sick.

A strong justice system is required to stop this cycle of violence. What do you mean by " you'd make sure they got the same"?? Punishing the people who committed the crime OR punishing every or any hindu?? Some hindus committed a crime and they should pay. It is so easy to say that gujarati muslims should take up arms and take revenge. Take revenge on whom? innocent hindus?? Then the innocent hindu who lost a family member will do the same. and so on and so on.

Take some time and think about it Braveheart.

When an islamic militant kills people, he should be punished, and people who supported him should be punished, not the whole muslim community. Why not follow the same standards for people from other religions??

Well said. :14:

Those who committed the crime and those who supported it, including that dog Modi and his fascist BJP acolytes, should be severely punished.

But NOT through vigilante violence or through mob rule - but through due process and the law.

And definitely no cause for saying all Hindus etc should be punished!

I just watched 'Partition - The Day India Burned' by the BBC. It's a really powerful documentary. Highly recommended! It really moved me.

then there is documentary about. e=mc 2 thats good too

An eye-opening documentary into the 2008 global economic crisis, what happened, why it happened and who's responsible. Quite chilling to be honest considering the fact that the very system that allowed such a meltdown to happen in today still in place and building up steam again.

Inside Job (2010) is a documentary film about the late-2000s financial crisis directed by Charles H. Ferguson. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2010 and won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Ferguson has described the film as being about "the systemic corruption of the United States by the financial services industry and the consequences of that systemic corruption."[3] In five parts, the film explores how changes in the policy environment and banking practices helped create the financial crisis. Inside Job was well received by film critics who praised its pacing, research, and exposition of complex material.

Nice thread.
I would recommend the following, although it's an old one:

Waco: The Rules of Engagement
This controversial documentary about the stand-off between an unorthodox Christian group - the Branch Davidians, under the leadership of the young, charismatic David Koresh - and the FBI and ATF in Waco, Texas, from February to April 1993 presents a different spin on the events from that of the United States government, which held that the Branch Davidians set the fire that destroyed their compound, and killed the vast majority of them, on April 19, 1993. Using footage from the 51 day siege, from the congressional hearings afterwards, from people involved in all aspects of the siege, and from experts technical, psychological, and religious, the movie suggests that the Branch Davidians were not a cult, but a valid religious group practicing under First Amendment freedoms who fell victim to first the ineptitude of an ATF raid designed to garner the agency positive attention and later the cruel, methodical work of the FBI, who over-saw the murder of the Davidians and then quickly covered it up.

^ In keeping wit that theme this Eng Subtitled documentary about the Argentinian Economic Collapse.

All Pakistanis should watch this for sure as you should look out for the IMf in the coming years as they further indebt Pakistan and punish the masses whilst sucking up the profitable industries for their Investor mates.

Here's another good one:

Cities of Light : The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain

Over a thousand years ago, the sun-washed lands of Southern Spain were home to Muslims, Christians, and Jews living together and flourishing. Their culture and beliefs intertwined and the knowledge of the ancients was gathered and reborn. Here were the very seeds of the Renaissance. But this world too quickly vanished. Greed, fear, and intolerance swept it away. Puritanical judgments and absolutism snuffed out the light of learning. Within a few centuries, the fragile union of these people dissipated like smoke. Brought to life by powerful, feature-film style re-creations, Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain explores the causes that destroyed the one civilization of pluralism and interfaith cooperation that for a few centuries lit the Dark Ages in Medieval Europe.

British India from the view point of John Sergeant (BBC). A must watch documentary for all Indians

John Sergeant embarks on a unique 3,000 mile journey through the history of the greatest legacy the British left to India - its rail network. The biggest in Asia, it runs on 40,000 miles of track and reaches every corner of the subcontinent. Proposed in 1853 by Governor General Lord Dalhousie, it would become the biggest engineering project of its time and instrumental in every chapter of India's history.

Starting in Kolkata, Sergeant traverses India from east to west, travels through turbulent Bihar state, visits the Victorian railway town of Jamalpur, and discovers why the construction of the Dufferin Bridge at Varanasi resulted in Victorian technology and ingenuity clashing with ancient religion, before ending his journey at the border with Pakistan.

Even though Mahatma Gandhi denounced the railways as evil, Sergeant reveals how it became a civil engineering triumph that united the country and played a crucial role when India became independent in 1947.

I don't think they show the areas in much detail. From what I remember, they showed some Pakistani city once to talk about Vedic times, and once again visits Lahore briefly during the Mughal era.

I've watched this one too. Poignant to say the least.

Seen a few really good documentaries recently...

I mentioned the Redemption of General Butt Naked doc in another thread...

In a similar vein I got to see 'Enemies of the People' which is about the Khmer Rouge...it really is an incredible documentary because similar to the General Butt Naked movie the documentary was about the perpetrators of the crimes...in this case the interviewer managed to speak to Nuon Chea who was 2nd in command after Pol Pot and also villagers who were part of death squads...

Whats incredible is that the interviewers own family...his father, mother and brother were murdered by the Khmer Rouge...and yet he is so committed to creating an understanding of why what happened happened...there are some incredible scenes in the film and films where criminals look back at their actions and assess them make for fascinating television....

<iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KiO-kcYlgLs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I mentioned in another thread Stealing a Nation which was infuriating to watch...one of Pilger's best in terms of what I have seen...its about how the British cleansed a whole native population for profit...and this is recent history...the parts where the American states it is an insignificant issue and the man from Blairs government stated they couldnt justify returning these people to their homes because it would be expensive and essentially is not worthy was sickening...a whole community forcibly removed from their native land is a crime against humanity but unfortunately their lives matter not in the real world...

<iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1oCqqn_uOiY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Also got to see American Radical which is about Norman Finkelstein who wrote the Holocaust Industry which is focused on Zionists who use the Holocaust for their own means...he certainly is a courageous man and one has to admire his commitment to what he deems the truth considering the fact that he is Jewish...the doc covers him from his beginnings and his mothers influence to him sadly losing his tenureship and job because of the views he carries and his disagreement with Dershawitz...this is probably the best scene...

<iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ivz06LZSWjY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

You can't beat a bit of old Louis Theroux, any of his documentaries are worth the watch. I paticularly liked the one about Israel. But even his less serious work is very enjoyable.

Why is this in the cricket section?

Best documentary... The Cove was pretty good. A documentary type of movie.

Hoop dreams is amazing.

Louis is a national treasure. The two about the American nightmare family have gone worldwide, the paedophilia/prison episodes are incredible, and his various investigations into the porn, sex and Thai bride industries are as compelling as they are bizarre.

Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain is another good one.
