In this thread you can add facts related to cricket i will start with a few:

* In a World Cup Match in 1975, Gavaskar batted throughout the 60 overs & scored only 36 runs in 174 balls. India lost to England by a huge margin of 203 runs.

* The Longest Match in the history is between South Africa and England of 14 days in 1939.

* Sri-Lanka lost their last six wickets for 8 runs in the game vs. Australia at Melbourne in January 1990. They were 121/4 and thn 129 all out.

* A match between Barbados and British Guyana in 1946 saw an over with 14 balls in which there were no wides or no balls ! The 8 ball over was in force and the extra six deliveries were due to umpiring miscounting

* Sachin Tendulkar is the first batsman to be dismissed (run out) by using the television replays by the third umpire, Jonty Rhodes was the fielder. Next day, in the same test match, Jonty Rhodes was given run out by the umpire. This time the fielder was none other than Sachin Tendulkar.

* Cricket has appeared in the Olympics only twice. The first time was in 1896 in Athens, however, when it came down to it there were not enough teams to compete so the competition did not occur. Then, in 1900 at the Paris Olympics, only two teams were able to compete: Great Britain and France. The winner, Great Britain, received the gold medal.

* Geoff.Boycott was the one who faced the first ball in One-Day cricket. Graham Mc-Kenzie was the bowler.

:))) Thats terrible.

Another fact which is not new for indians is that current indian players have played 25%-35% ODI matches against Sri Lanka.

* Rohit played 31 out of 96 against Lanka

* Kohli played 32 out of 106 against Lanka.

* Raina played 49 out of 167 against Lanka.

* Dhoni played 56 out of 225 against Lanka.

* Sir Jaddu played 22 out of 73 against Lanka.

A few more...

* Because of extremely hot weather, drinks intervals were allowed every two overs in the Australia vs. New Zealand match at Melbourne in January 1988.

* Mike gatting had his nose broken by a ball from Malcolm Marshall while batting v West Indies at Kingston in 1986. The ball unfortunately dropped from his nose on to the wicket.

* The game between Australia and Pakistan at Sydney arranged for December 8, 1981 had to be postponed due to a power workers strike.

* Geoff Boycott confused both scorers and umpires when he took strike at the wrong end, following a drinks interval, England vs. Australia at Sydney December 1979.

* Larry Gomes suffered a broken nose and the loss of two teeth while batting for West Indies vs. Sri Lanka at Melbourne in February 1985.

* England's John Jameson, who was born in India, made his highest Test score (82) against India.

* There were no less than six ducks- plus one not out batsman, in the Pakistani innings v West Indies, at Cape Town in 1993.

* Ramiz Raja was dropped three times in his 90’s on the way to scoring 116* for Pakistan vs. Sri Lanka in February 1990.

* England lost their last seven wickets for 10 runs against India at Gwalior on March 4, 1993.

Here comes a few more...

* 6 players have hit centuries in their 100th test, only Ponting has scored a 100 in both innings though, against SA in 2006.

* Garfield Sobers' maiden test 100 (at a time when he was averaging ~28-30 with the bat) was his world record 365* against pakistan in 1958.

* Mohammad Yousuf hit 9 centuries in 2006, with an avg of 99.33 - 9 centuries in 19 innings. Next for most centuries in a calendar year is Ponting, 7 in 18. Bradman's best yearly performances were 5 centuries in 9 and 13 innings.

* Lara & Tendulkar were the quickest to reach 10k runs, both taking 195 innings. Ponting needed 196 - the others took 206 (Dravid), 212 (Gavaskar), 217 (kallis), 235 (Border), 244 (Waugh). Interestingly, it took Tendulkar 103 innings to reach 5k runs, Lara took 104. Bradman took 56.

* Wasim Akram took two hattricks in the same series against SL in 1998. He is also one of only 3 players to take 4 wickets in 5 balls, against west indies in 1990-1. He has also taken 3 wickets in 4balls twice. He is also the only player to have taken 2 test hattricks and 2 ODI hattricks.

Mudassar Nazar scored the slowest Test century of all time when he batted for 591 minutes and made an excruciating 114 off 449 balls at the remarkable strike-rate of 25.38! Arguably even more painful, in the same Test match (Lahore Test of 1977/78) Geoffrey Boycott scored 63 from 267 balls at the strike-rate of 23.59.

The first International Game in any sports was Cricket. It was played between USA and Canada in 1844. It was played in front of a Audience of 10,000 People. Sadly it is not regarded as an official match.

India have never lost a match when jadeja scored a century.

Very strange . I think the tests between PK & Australia in UAE were played in temperatures in excess of 45c & in India too i am told few tests have been played when the temps were over 42c .
Bro, any clue what were the temps when those 2 over drink intervals were permitted ?

Wisden report that temp exceeded 40ºC so it will be around 42 i guess no official confirmation available...

In a big bash match 20 runs were scored off 1 ball the equation was 6nb, 6nb, 6

286 runs
The first ball of an 1893/94 match
between Western Australia and Victoria
was hit into the branches of a jarrah
tree just inside the field of play. The
ball was out of reach and so the home
side appealed for "lost ball". The umpires
however disagreed seeing as the ball
wasn't lost because everybody could see
exactly where it was.
The batsmen carried on running while
the home side tried to find an axe to
cut down the tree. They couldn't find an
axe but instead brought out a shotgun
and tried to blast the ball from the tree.
After several misses, the ball was finally
dislodged and fell onto the outfield.
Nobody thought to catch it. Therefore
the batsmen claimed the 286 runs they
had accumulated. The home side then
declared their one-ball innings and went
on to win the match

hahaha...Let's have at least one or 2 trees near boundary in every ground and hide all Axes...

Is this real?? if yes, thats hilarious :)) the runners had incredible stamina! 286 runs, all run... wow... thanks for the share bro.

Herschelle Gibbs invited prostitutes in his hotel room and threw a party a night before a match.

He was subsequently dropped and checked into rehab
(he made 90 odd in a T20 vs the Windies the following day, who needs a goodnight sleep?)

While playing against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Lord's in 1936, Jahangir Khan (Father of Majid Khan & Uncle of Imran Khan) bowled a ball to Tom Pearce that hit a sparrow on the way. The sparrow fell dead against the stumps and is preserved in the MCC museum at Lord's.

Maximum runs scored in a first class match off ONE BALL is ELEVEN !!!! Preety funny how it happened. Two English side were playing. One of the player from the visiting team had shot off his mouth the night before. As it happened, he was fielding on the boundry line. The locals were getting on his case every chance they got. Anyways, a ball was bowled and the batsman hits it long and high, straight at this fielder. The guy makes a circus catch and then turns to the gallery and is having fun with them. Meanwhile, back at the pitch, the Umpire had called a NO BALL !!!!! Now the batsmen were running between wickets like crazy ..... ELEVEN in all before one of the player from the fielding side ran to the boundry and threw the ball back.

Bet no one knew about this one.

Is it true that Dickie Bird was once attacked by a bird?

Apparently it is. Dickie Bird was once attacked by a cockatoo - not on the field after a disputed lbw decision, but at an exhibition in Birmingham in 1994. It scratched his face and gave him a nosebleed.

Talking of birds here's another

Who has made the longest duck in Test cricket?

This esoteric record is held by Geoff Allott, the New Zealand tailender. He survived for 101 minutes - 77 balls - against South Africa at Auckland in 1998-99. Allott helped Chris Harris (68 not out) put on 32, in a vain attempt to avert the follow-on, before he was dismissed by Shaun Pollock for 0. Allott called it "the best duck I'll ever make".

There was fact but I don't fully remember the teams or batsmen. I think the bowling team required to get the wicket of last man to claim the victory, but both batsmen at the crease batted for the next three days and the game was drawn.

I don't know if it is true on facts, but just observation on memory :

In the decade of 1990-99, India did not lose a Test series at home and did not win a Test away (except one odd win in SL, if you call it away),

Darrel Harper wore a nappy during a match due to stomach ache(Hahah)

Billy Bowden was locked in bathroom in India and match was delayed for 10 mins.Door was broken to get Billy out

In a move unprecedented in Test cricket's 122-year history, the umpires brought the players off the field. As the sole arbiters of what happens on the field, the decision was theirs, though it had the backing of both captains as well as a those of England's battered batsmen..The pitch on Kingston was one of the dangerous pitches with visible puddles of water and so uneven bounce that medic was now like a permanent part of fielding side

That's why many doubt whether a possible Timeless Test as the final of the 2017 Test Championship is tangible or a sensible idea - because of doubts over much money can be generated (as less people would want to watch a match which would go on forever) and also because of time limitations.

Anyway, adding to your fact, England were close to winning that game, having accumulated 654 runs (with only 5 wickets down) out of the 696 run target.

They said the championship will be played between Top 4 Ranked Teams right? England is now #3 suppose by the end of 2016 they are #5 and 2017 championship is in England so how much interest people will have?

Same can be said about 2021 championship which is in india what if india is not in top 4 at the end of 2020?

This will not happen for sure.. what is BCCI for if they can't even fix the silly rankings. Trust them.

I think it was back in early 2000 when India beat Australia. It was only the second time in history when a team won after getting a follow-on in the first innings.

* Bangladesh v IndiaTest Series 2007, In First Test match Wasim Jaffer scored 2 consecutive ducks as opener in both innings and thn scored a 138* in 2nd Test before getting retired ill...

* A match between Barbados and British Guyana in 1946 saw an over with 14 balls in which there were no wides or no balls ! The 8 ball over was in force and the extra six deliveries were due to umpiring miscounting

I have had that happen in gully cricket. But here the umpire was "not on the ground" for sure.

How much time did it take to fetch the ball? If 30 minutes, you could just walk 286 no need to run.

Interesting Facts About Cricket!

Lasith Malinga is the only bowler to have ever taken four consecutive wickets.

In 1996, a Test match in Pakistan vs Newzeland was delayed by 20 minutes as PCB forgot to supply balls. Match was then started using a ball bought from local sports shop.

It was the same match, in which fats bowler Muhammad Zahid got 11 wickets on debut.

I've seen some bad shots in my time, but the one played by Middlesex's Simon Cook (right) against Northants' Johann Louw in 2004 takes some beating as it led to three separate appeals at once.

Cook had the ball rap onto his pad, cue appeal; then cannon onto the bat and spoon up into the air for Graeme Swann to snaffle, cue another appeal; Swann then threw down the stumps with Cook out of his ground, cue yet another appeal.

The umpires conferred, and probably using some variation on scissor-paper-stone, decided that he was caught.

5 Differences Between Cricket and Baseball
1. Cricketers run in straight lines, not in circles
2. No baseball fielder would be stupid enough to stand at silly mid off
3. Baseball games will never stop for afternoon tea
4. Cricketers pants aren't skin tight
5. Cricketers sometimes will wear baseball caps, but baseball players never wear cricket caps :p

Two beasts of the game! :don :wasim

If he was dropped, then how he played the match on following day?

he was checked into rehab after his heroic innings CSA and management kept quiet about it to protect him. In general we never do our laundry in public :)

I know that's called a diamond bro but in general language we call it running in circle not talking about baseball language...

In baseball, a home run is scored when the ball is hit in such a way that the batter is able to circle all the bases ending at home plate, scoring himself and each runner who was already on base, with no errors by the defensive team on the play.

Sure, but their hatred will not stop him from playing anyway. That's enough to add salt to their wounds. Every time, he takes the field, his haters receive a jolt.

Thanks for the appreciation guys...

Let me share another Fact with you guys related to Cricket and PP never talk about anything related to Afridi here or at least not in his favor otherwise you will be under heavy attack here...

Pleasure.

* The first recorded game was played in 1646, and later fines were handed out for those who missed the church to play.

Two cricket facts that I remember:

  • In a Test match between Pakistan and New Zealand in 1969 at the National Stadium (Karachi) the three Mohammad brothers of Mushtaq, Hanif and Sadiq all played.
  • Unerringly, both Erapalli Prasanna's and Saqlain Mushtaq's careers ended when they were destroyed by the opposition's batsmen (Zaheer Abbas for Prasanna and Sehwag for Saqlain) in their forty-ninth Tests.

* West Indian fast bowler Courtney Walsh was nicknamed Duracell for his ability to bowl extremely long spells.

* After scoring 277 runs at the SCG in 1993 vs. Australia Brian Lara named his own daughter Sydney!

Some more cricket facts from me:

  • As far as I'm aware, Javed Miandad remains the only batsman to carry his team home whenever he remained not out in a completed ODI innings. What a legend the guy was!
  • Javed Miandad's record of 9 consecutive ODI fifties still stands.
  • A small amount of years before the legend story - which would be revealed in later years - of Donald Bradman practicing with a golf ball and a stump against the water tank in his family, Jack Hobbs was growing up playing with a stump and a tennis ball in the fives courts (similar to squash courts) in Jesus College, Cambridge.
  • On his debut, Fred Trueman managed to coerce the touring India side into collapsing to 0-4 in the 4th innings of the 1st Test of 1952, the worst start in a Test innings EVER.
  • In a match at the Oval, WG Grace was bowled a by a delivery which clipped at his bails but after realising this, all he did - at the astonishment of the bowler - was replace the bails and tell the bowler, "These people have paid to watch me bat, not you bowl, so please carry on bowling young man".

If I'm not mistaken, Steve Bucknor remains the only cricket umpire to have also been an official footballing referee, when he stood as a FIFA referee during the 1998 World Cup qualifier game between El Salvador and Netherlands Antilles.

At the conclusion of his First-Class career, Bishan Bedi ended up with remarkable best bowling figures (in an innings) of 7 wickets for 5 runs!

5 runs for 7 wickets!

It would have been the most epic sportsmanship moment of all time if Chris Lewis kept purposely bowling no-balls until the target was at 6 runs off 1 ball.

Pakistan vs SA at the MCG would have been a different story

WG Grace. what a Legend.

In a test match in Faisalabad in 1997-98 ,Mushtaq Ahmed was bowling to Pat Symcox. Symcox missed the ball, which went on to knock the middle stump. However, the heat had fused together the bails and they did not fall.Symcox went on to make 81,his second highest test score.

Only four test series have ended 0-0 with all five matches being drawn. India was involved in three of them, including two in a row against Pakistan.

Pak-Ind were in war and they were afraid of losing to each other and thn to public reaction so they tried to draw every match during that period and it's a record 13 consecutive draw test matches between 2 teams...

I think that happened twice in that match, if I recall correctly after reading his autobiography. I am probably wrong though.

Some more facts:

  • During a match between Pakistan and South Africa in 1994, batsman Dave Richardson decided to take a quick single. Although the 3rd umpire Atio Khan knew he had made his ground after seeing the replay footage, he pressed the red button to signal out. Turns out he was colour blind!
  • In 1991, David Gower and John Morris decided to fly a Tiger Moth bi-plane back-and-forth over the ground where England where playing a warm-up match. Ultiamtely, they were reprimanded by the English managment for their actions.
  • During a match between Wellington and Canterbury in 1990 with a draw looking inevitable, Ervin McSweeney (Welligton's captain) order a bowler in his team, Robert Vance, to attempt to bowl badly to encourage Canterbury to go for the win. Vance ended up deliberately bowling no-balls amied anywhere but at the stumps, managing to concede 77 runs from his 22-ball over!
  • During a long-haul flight from Sydney to England in 1989 (the Aussies were travelling to England for the Ashes tournament), David Boon managed to down 52 cans of beer during the flight. Amazingly, when the plane had landed, he "kinda managed to walk" and averaged over 70 in the series!
  • Before a law was introduced in 1875 that stated that three stumps had to be erected out of the ground, a straight-bat-maker named John Small was bowled three times between the 2 stumps which used to be present before the law was created, but remained not out because the ball had not struck the stumps.
  • Before the straight bat was introduced in the 1760s, players used curved bats that looked rather more like hockey sticks.
  • In a match in 1771, defence-minded Reigate player Thomas "Shock" White shocked the cricket world by using a bat as wide as the stumps!
  • MCC batsman "Silver Bill" Beldham had an innovative way of batting. In the 1790's "length" bowling was all the rage so this particular batsmen decided to jump two-footed to the pitch of the ball, like a kangaroo with human feet, playing cricket.
